segmented wood turned Wedding bowl

- I have been asked by my in-laws to create a segmented bowl that they can give as a wedding gift. I have been looking at Hawaiian tapa cloth patterns and like one that is a chevron and a checkerboard pattern mixed together. I made the bowl so there is maple around the top and walnut around the bottom and the two woods mix in the pattern running around the bowl. I thought this was a nice metaphor of two people joining together.
I really enjoy your style of presentation -- honest, informative, and inspiring. Thank you!
This is the last place I thought I would see you
Oliver Herrmann Ha, same here. UA-cam can be so small...
Nice to see you here Ben. Similar people with similar minds find many of the same things interesting.
your editing makes the video 100 times better to watch
Hi Frank. That was a great presentation. I love how you captured the parts getting together on the saw, like claymation almost. Very cool. And your narrative is dry and humorous... great stuff. Inspiring! Thanks so much. I learned a lot watching, and your shop is very cool.
You make me strive to be a better woodworker. U da man. Keep it up.
Awesome!
Haha its so cool to see the people I watch conversing with each other. Both of you are great, keep doing what you love
I think the newly-weds were exceedingly fortunate to receive this artwork as a gift!
These videos are therapeutic, it's like he's the Bob Ross of Woodworking
I love your videos.
I don’t know enough about the profession to initially make sense of your descriptions, but once I see what you’re actually doing, it all makes sense.
Your voice puts me to sleep and I mean that in the nicest way.
Dear Frank Howarth, I don't know what it's better: your craft, your talent, your shop or your editing. Congratulations!! Your awesome. Thank you for the video! :-)
Frank,
You don't know how bad I wish you were my next door neighbor. I would just sit quietly in the corner of your shop and absorb. Don't worry, I'm not moving to the Portland area, ever. Too much rain. Once again you have produced not only an outstanding work of art from wood but your video rivals anything I have ever seen. Thank you, I hope you continue for many, many years.
Another outstanding project! The editing is great, the woodworking is absolutely first class and the segmented design is always interesting without being pushy. Thanks for taking the time to share your work with us. I'm already looking forward to your next project.
Butcher block oil is mineral oil which isn't a drying oil and will eventually seep out of the wood. Ironically, it is also a medium for bacterial growth.
I bow to you sir. To a mere hobbyist turner such as myself, this was akin to watching a god create. Thank you for sharing this amazing piece.
Love love love these segmented turnings! A lot of work and it shows in the end! Stunning!
Chris
Frank. I love the bowl, the creativity, and the video quality. You are an inspiration to us all. Keep up the great work.
I love how you explained everything, really fun to watch
I felt stress form my job then i found your video and i realize i can enjoy someone's work. Your job is amazing.
Frank, I always enjoy watching your videos, not just your woodworking abilities, but the art of the video itself is amazing.
I must say I have been watching your videos for over a year and you have some incredible talent in woodworking and video editing. Thanks for inspiring and sharing your work. If I ever achieve a fraction of your woodworking talent I will feel accomplished.
Finally!! Thany you youtube recomendations for some really quality videos! Great work! Awesome work!
Wonderful. Love it all. Liked the top down shot on the lathe. Appreciated you explaining the setup of the individual pieces and the the angles used and the jigs.
Wow so beautiful. You never get tired of looking at you and your works
Brilliant video in all aspects. Your presentation is clear and crisp; you don't spend a bunch of time on endless exposition, and there's no annoying music blaring through the whole thing. It's just a fantastic piece of work. The animation really seals it for me. Brilliant.
The bowl is stunning. Well done.
That shop is glorious. I love those big old tools! That disc sander!!! You've clearly put a lot of love into that place. It shows in both the shop and the work.
Great job on this video... best segmented turning video I have seen on youtube.
Great job. My father has always loved lathes. Myself, I've always been intimidated. When you flipped the bowl to profile the outside and mentioned you hoped you remembered the interior profile, you pretty much captured my neurosis. Thanks for posting.
Beautiful bowl Frank. As some of the previous guys commented, I liked the way you explained the process. Thank you 👏👏👏
Another bad ass bowl! 👍
Love your videos Frank. Thanks man. Be well.
Frank, I love this bowl. Great choice of wood combination ans the pattern is beautiful. This was a great demonstration of how this piece was done and I'll be using this for reference. Thanks for sharing, Fred
Great job! After listening to the podcast Brainpick that you were on I have even more respect for you and your skills as a woodworker and you video production.
I'm not sure which is more impressive... your bowl, or the editing involved in making this video! You have it all, time-lapse, stop-motion.. Amazing! P.S. Love the bowl!
I actually get anxious when I go too long without one of your videos, but you, yet again, delivered magnificently! I am a true fan, thank you so much for these great videos, I look forward to my first attempt at segmented turning some day! you inspire me!
I just love watching these woodworks
same lol
Frank, the easy answer to larger hose clamps is in itself easy. Just get two of the largest size you can find and unscrew them. Then thread them together to make one large hose clamp. Hope this helps. Thanks for all the great wood working.
Wonderful craftsmanship Frank. Always enjoy watching the vids you produce.
Another very cool project Mr. Howarth :) always look forward to your new videos!
Excellent work! What a great idea for a wedding gift. I appreciate the symbolism of the two different types of wood coming together. Favorite shot = camera in the bottom of the bow.
The stop-motion clips are just terrific. Great job video both the piece and the video!
simply amazing!!! watched without a blink must say....hats off..
Awesome as always. Thank you for the time and effort you put into each and every video.
Beautiful bowl, Frank. The design fits the bowl. Love the bowl and video.
Spectacular woodworking made even more enjoyable by the video presentation. Super fun to watch

3:20 was a really great use of stop motion, every part of your videos inspires, Frank. The editing, the art and of course the woodworking itself! Thanks for sharing :)

Frank you really nailed this beautiful Bowl! Nice job and thank you so much for sharing this inspirational video from a great series of perspectives.
Good job as per usual. Enjoyed and learned a little. Have never thought of putting the rubber grommets inside the bowl when its tapered that way, will try that at my first opportunity. Again, thanks for sharing your skill and expertise.
Very nice. I particularly enjoyed the making of the segments frank, great video 👍
Very nice Frank,I tip my hat to you sir. I love watching your videos and your artistic abilities, keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!
I am so addicted to your videos, you have such a talent and I am sure that workshop hasn’t come easy either but wow how lucky to have it.
What a beautiful gift that makes. Really impressive. I've said it before but it bears repeating. I love your videos.
holy crap. amazing video. The content, the shots, the editing, all top notch
its finals season for me and I have been going through and watching your videos, they are so calming and peaceful to watch, I plan on having an artistic career path but this makes me want to go into carpentry. my grandfather was a carpenter and so being in a wood shop always brought me peace, thank you for your amazing videos
Awesome as usual Frank. Absolutely gorgeous.
I love that you make both woodworking and video editing equally important in your videos.
been watching your videos for a solid 6 hours now. with a couple other turners mixed in here and there. yours are by far the most entertaining though. well done, production wise. this is my favorite piece so far. the pattern lines up perfectly. that seems really hard.
This is fucking amazing... My mind is blown by how much work you put not only into the piece but the animation...bravo dude braavvvooo
Wow! Truly a work of art, both the bowl and the video. I'm in awe.
The walnut base is an especially nice contrast to the chevron. Beautiful as always.
That's about as perfect as you get. Great video, Frank.
I love everything about your videos. I'm really happy to see you cut the strips before planing them. I do things like that all the time.
Frank, you make all this look so easy. It gives me the confidence to try more challenging projects. Mad props, man. I truly admire your work.
Beautiful video, Frank.
The bowl looks very nice.
The people are sure to appreciate very much about it.
In large bowl, it is advantageous if the lathe stands freely (For grinding).
Greetings from Germany.
Great video, your stop motion animations with the sound are really fun to watch . Thank you
Frank it is a fantastic bowl, it is the second time that I watch the video it is wow.
Fantastic video and work - just as usual... :) You are one of my heros!

Superb work Frank, a truly stunning bowl.

You are the first woodturner I've seen using Kant-Twist clamps.... Nice bowl, too.
What a great designed bowl. You can always be relied on to do something unusual.
Been missing you on the tube.
Lee
Great article in Wood magazine. You are a wealth of knowledge!
Thanks, is that on the street? I have not seen it in the magazine yet.
Just received my copy in the mail today. Your article starts on page 18
You sir are Amazing! Everything about this video is Top Flight, this has been such a pleasure to watch a Master execute such precision at his craft, your work is by far Superior to anything that I have ever seen before. Thank you for this experience 👍👌💯👏
Beautiful bowl Frank!!Very creative design!
Ok amazing art and woodworking is one thing but adding in the absolutely flawless stop motion as well? This video was so beautiful and the final product was gorgeous as well!
Your stop motion animations are awesome. It is so much work to realise them. I love them.
OMG!!! This had me spellbound from beginning to end. I'm at a lost for words at how impressed I am with this. Great work!!!
I find that to be your best looking bowl so far! congrats, Frank!
wow, nice work, great shop,it was great to see warts and all aproach to the video cheers malc
One beautiful piece of work Frank!!!! JimE
start to finish, your videos are phenomenal!
Always entertaining watching your videos. I've recently started turning segmented bowls. I'm always looking for new easier ways to do things so I wanted to share a tip I just came up with that will allow you to glue all of your rings at once with out them sliding around. Hot glue a small scrap of wood to the edge of each ring after you line up each ring before you apply glue. Saves me a ton of time and frustration. Keep up the amazing work.
Thanks, that's a good tip, I need to find my hot glue gun.
Beautiful selection of wood. I'm sure they really enjoyed the gift. Thanks for sharing..
so, i know its silly to ask but i so wish you would put out videos more frequently. you are so amazing, my favorite wood worker on here for sure hands down!! i have watched the walnut half segmented half turned bowl video at least a dozen times, it is my absolute favorite piece of yours, im so in love with it!! keep up the beautiful work!! you are amazing!!!!
Amazing piece of woodwork !!!
Great job Frank! I know they will love it.... Thanks for sharing it.
Beautiful, Frank. Every time I watch one of your videos, I feel like I'm getting a little bit smarter.
pleasing result. love watching the process as well.
Craftsman are amazing to watch. The shop looks Great BTW.
Always impressive to watch these come to life. Very nice work Frank!
Great job as always Frank
Its a work of art Frank. Thanks.
Can't go wrong with maple and walnut - Beautiful bowl Frank
Fantastic! Great combination of woodworking & video editing skills!
I really like what you made Frank. And a very entertaining video too.
I always look forward to your videos! Great stuff!
A wonderful creation Frank, well done. The issue you hard with the bowl not being held well in the Longworth Chuck may have been resolved by setting the buttons on the inside then expanding into the bowl. Naturally not applying too much pressure. It would be criminal to split the bowl after all of that work.
I’m sure that you have been told this a thousand times, but that workshop of yours is awesome. Is it some sort of business workshop with many people being in there normally is it .?. Either way it is one hell of a workshop.
I absolutely love the work you do editing the videos and animated them. I’m sure it must take you a very long time to do, but it is definitely worth it. I love your videos, keep them coming
What a wonderful piece of craftsmanship. Very nice!,
+SAMRODIAN Thanks
