Woodturning a Large Sapele & Walnut Bowl

  • This project turned out nicely, but it didn't turn out as expected. I got a little careless on the sapele blank and almost went through the bottom with only 1/8" to spare. So, I decided to part-off. I attached the sapele ring to some leftover rings that I had laying around from previous projects. I used walnut to finish out the bottom two rings and a flame birch base, which matches the top rim. All in all, there is sapele, walnut, birch, bubinga, and birdseye maple used in the construction.
    As always, thank you for watching. And, if you haven't yet, please subscribe. Thank you. I hope you enjoy. --Dan

    Liking the shape of the bowl with it’s extra curves. Nice touch and good use of oopsies and left overs.

    I can say I felt your pain when I first saw that piece of Sapele cut off. Then I read the decription and laughed a little when you said you parted it off. Like I have never made a mistake in my 30+ years as a carpenter. LOL. Awesome recovery, the bowl turned out beautifully.

    Wow, I got to watch it first! I have a pile of "lost rings" too. I also used an old car battery as a press before I made one with an old car jack.

    Thanks Dan. Being new to this, I've yet to find 2 turners who use the same finish. It can be a bit mind boggling, but I really like what I'm seeing on your work

      Thanks James. Yeah, there's a lot of methods, but I really love Myland's. Prior to that I was mixing my own OB shine juice and it too worked well. But, the Myland's friction polish is effortless to apply and you can build a very nice shine very quickly.

    Hi Dan. Just found your channel. You’ve turned some beautiful bowls!
    I see you’re using a Nova DVR 1824. How do you like it. I have been offered a Nova 2024 DVR. Do you like the belt less drive?

      Hi Carson, thank you for watching. Yes, I love my Nova 1624. Just the right size for my small shop. I added the DVR after I bought it. It makes all the difference.

      Hi Patrick, I design my plans using the WoodturnerPro software. It's easy to use and it's helpful to see close to what it will look like before you begin. I highly recommend the software. www.woodturnerpro.com

    Dan, how do you prevent the rings from moving during the gluing process, that when you place the weight? I built a jig, it helps, but you seem not to need one. Thanks for the great videos.

    • @LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft
      @LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft  5 років тому

      TiteBond II Premium has a very good initial tack and it helps to keep things where I want them.
      But, what you're not seeing on the videos is that I let each ring stay under the weight for a few minutes before I continue to the next. Also, I take several measurements with a metric ruler when positioning the rings. My aim is not to be off more than a millimeter or so. That's why, when I hand spin to start, the bowl is concentric and centered. I hope that helps you. Thank you for watching my videos.
