The recipe I learned was 1/3 each: beeswax, solid butter, and liquid oil - easy for me to remember 😉 and scale up or down. I usually use grapeseed or safflower oil to minimize the greasy feel. (Coconut oil dries me out). I have a friend who gives me beeswax from their hives, though I usually process it one more time to get all of the sediment out, especially for gifts. I like the giant chapstick holders, 2.5-3oz., TSA compliant; I've done body butter sticks, and for moms-to-be, belly butter sticks 🤰🏽🫃🏻- easy, quick, gift. 😊 PS: cornstarch can be used, but be careful if giving or selling because of allergies.
These bars are LOVELY 💗 I made 2 test bars with varying amounts of arrowroot powder. I ended up loving the ratio of 1TBS Arrowroot Powder to 1LB of oils. It was amazing, thank you for sharing. formula.
I made a batch of these lotion bars and I am planning to give them out to my friends. Cannot thank you enough for the very detailed explanation and the accurate measurements. Thank you for sharing your gifts
I have used corn starch and it feels great and leaves this non greasy touch on the skin. Thank you, Ellen, for sharing this, and so many other recipes, we learn so much from you. My lotion bar molds are just the same as those, I love them ❤❤❤
I made 2 batches of this for Christmas gifts. One in a ylang ylang essential oil and the other with orange essential oil. My daughters-in-love really liked them and my husband likes the orange one. Thank you for sharing your recipe!
Those bars are very cute, Im sure they are divine on the skin. I make a lotion bar that my coworkers love, We have to wash our hands a lot at work and gets very drying. My recipe is 1 part unrefined beeswax, add 1 part oils (coconut/avocado), and one part butters (cocoa and shea ) Its a solid bar in winter but I keep mine in the refrigerator in summer. I might try adding a little more beeswax for my summer bars. Sometimes I add a few drops of lavender or jasmine essential oil to individual bars as they are starting to solidify to retain maximum fragrance. I got some purple clay for soap making I think Ill try adding some to the lotion bars in place of arrowroot. I never thought of that until you mentioned it! Thanks for sharing! Ive been needing to make more bars and this is the inspiration I needed to get it done, thanks!
I love them Ellen, I call them body butter bars over here. So travel friendly and all purposes. If I need to choose only one product to carry around for sure will be the lotion bars.
Haven't made anything in a while. Been peeping my calendula infusing in grape seed oil since August. May be time to make some bars :) . Thank you so much for your videos. I LOVE watching you, you are a great teacher! Coffee filter!!
I’ve made a simpler version and added sugar to it to use it at the end of showering for a bit of a scrub. Rinse off & pat dry. Feels so good after washing my hands too, keeping one by the sink. Will try your recipe too!
Love these lotion bars ,have made them quite a few times and have given them to family and they love them .I like the coffee filter best to pack into the tins, they are a bit more sturdy wrapped like that 😊xx
Thank you for your instructions! I made tiny bars last night and I am in LOVE!! This is just perfect for me. Not oily at all, and yet so moisturizing. My hands feel so soft! Thank you so much.
I love this! Thank you! I'm glad you mentioned allergies, I had found out recently that some people that I know has coconut allergies and you discussed this really helps to learn! ❤ I read people's comments and It's awesome! Merry Christmas everyone!
I LOVE lotion bars. Here in the Pacific Northwest, they are fantastic during winter when the heater is running so much, and when it is snowing. Thanks for the video, GREAT JOB!
Wonderful creamy bars. You wouldn't think so by the word but, Ellen you have a fabulous lotion bar! Use them on arms and legs. Like watching you make your lotion bars. 👍🎄
❤ Thank you very much I have just made my Christmas presents. I must say I have made these before on another video that you did. It worked but man it was messy. First time using beeswax and in the microwave 😂😂 this time I did it exactly like you did and it was so much better. TIP, put the handle over the edge of the pot to stop it getting too hot and it also stops it moveing around, also put all your dishes in the boiling water at the end to clean up. 😊 thank you again and have a lovely Christmas 🎄
Thank you, thank you for this wonderful recipe which is great for dry winter skin. Also, I appreciate that you included what needs to be on the labels for selling the bars! It can be quite confusing 😐. Happy holidays to you!
I made these and my family loved them. Have made several versions of your lotion bars and gifted them along with my soaps. Thank you so much for always encouraging. Merry Christmas to you and your family🌲
Hi Ellen! I have become a super fan of yours! You are a wonderful teacher. ❤ I had a quick question, could I pour this into the tins or would it be best to put them into the silicone molds first?
Good evening! I made these lotion bars this afternoon and they turned out fabulous! I was wondering if I could add more of the arrowroot powder? They are still a bit too greasy for me, but I didn’t know if more arrowroot would work or not. This is for my personal use, not for resale. Thank you for your guidance. Holly 💕
Just made this beautiful recipe! Question! It seems a little greasy- can I add more beeswax? Will that help? I used colloidal oats because that’s all I had on hand… thanks!
Thanks for this wonderful formula. I'm currently working on a zero waste line and wonder if you have ideas for not selling in tins. I realize they wouldn't be purse friendly, but on your desk or bed side on a lovely dish work. I think I answered my own question. Your thoughts? Thanks again.
Hello, i was just wondering if i could add dyes or glitter into the bar without messing the bar up? Also, how long would the shelf life be? Thank you so much!
What a great idea! I was thinking about a way to use my bees wax, but filling 20 lipbalm tubes was just too finicky for me. Lotion bars are perfect, and I will for sure also use them on my nose. :) I would use peppermint or eucalyptus essential oils. I understand that every EO has a different usage rate, but could you maybe just give me an estimate of how much EO you would suggest to use for this amount of product? Would you think that 15 drops are strong enough? The last time I tried EO in my soap it was a total fail - no scent at all. Your help is greatly appreciated! Thank you for sharing your fabulous recipes!
Thank you for all the information that you are giving us. 🥰 I would like to try to make this lotion bars, but do you think I can use any other butters, like kokum, avocado, murumuru, cupuacu? I have these butters and I am wondering if I could use them to make a luxurious lotion bar. TIA
I have a question about the weighing part. There is always different weighing ways. Do I weigh ounces in liquid or weight form? I get so confused. I know grams are grams, right? I'm new to this and can't wait to make these. I'm waiting on one more thing to come end. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your recipe. I am also getting creative about the oil and butter. I use candilla wax instead of beewax. How high should I melt the wax? Also up to what temp I shouldn't go over for the oil and butter. I know that shea shouldn't be overheat too much but I wasn't sure the temp. What the reccomend pour temp and when temp should I add the FO? Thanks again.
@@EllenRuthSoap Thank you for your respond. I also have another question. I would love to use this for face as well. But I tend to break out. What can I sub with cocoa butter and coconut oil. I love them for the hand and body but I know I can't use it for face.
@@EllenRuthSoap Thanks! I will def keep that in mind. I was scare because I know that cocoa butter have different consistency from other butter. Ohhh I brought babassu oil based on your reccomendation. I did the research and I am blown by how great this product is for your skin and health. One more thing, sorry. I noticed that my bar wasn't hard enough, it crumble a bit. what should I do to make it more firmer. I uses mango butter, shea butter, cocoa butter, candillia wax and coconut oil. Thanks again. You are super awesome. I plan on retesting again by creating new formula with using babssu oil.
I have a question... today i made lotion bars. I used 4ozs of bees wax, 4ozs of coconut oil, and 4ozs of coco butter. It came out way to oily. What can i do to fix this? If i need more wax, how much? Thanks
That depends on how cool your area is.. You can pop them in the fridge to speed things along, but I would recommend letting them set for at least several hours.
Hi Ellen 👋 where do you purchase the bourbon butterscotch plz? I bought some off of Amazon and Virginia Candle Co. sent me bourbon wood instead and now they're making me pay shipping to return it and I'm quite furious about that. Two completely different fragrances
Do you find yourself wanting to call these something else? I really wish there was a better name for them since it’s not actually a “lotion” and I have been having a hard time with that. Maybe I could call them a body butter bar
That's not how you double boil. Your container your melting in should not touch the bottom. Touching the bottom is almost like there is no water in there and it could scorch. Your melting container should be elevated above the bottom with water all around the container.
I am not one of those people that corrects people on youtube...mostly because even when I think I am being polite, people think I am being rude. That being said, I have to ask about your double boiling. To double boil, the thing you are trying to melt should be melted by the hot water instead of being put on the heating element, hence the name. When you set something on the bottom of the pan, it is the same as putting it directly onto the heating element and therefore isn't actually double boiling. To truly double boil, your container shouldn't fit inside of the pan of water, it should rest on the lip of it. Are you aware of that or were you using the term to mean something else? Not trying to be rude, I just am not sure if this is a regional thing or not because katie on royalty soaps made the same mistake (you're both in the southern us is what I mean) when she was trying to double boil and well, you're not going to get the right results if the true objective is not having high direct heat do the melting. If scorching is a concern and reason for the double boiling, you'll burn it if you do it your way. If it is just a case of saving dishes, then it makes sense, but it isn't double boiling as I know it, hence asking if it is a term used different regionally.
That's a very good point you bring up. Now that you mention it, I do realize that a true "double boiler" has the contents suspended over boiling water, so you are correct❣️ I've also seen folks set a washcloth in the bottom of the pan for the beaker to sit on, so it's not on the bottom of the pan, that might be another way to do it... I will say that the sourounding simmering water does melt the hard butters at a nice rate, and I've had good luck with it.
It doesn’t really matter how you melt the oils, some people use the microwave, some people use a double boiler, some people use the method shown here and I just put a pot directly on the stovetop. As long as you don’t overheat, it’s fine but honestly, whatever you do in a video on UA-cam is open to criticism. Sometimes you just can’t win.
I use kaolin clay in my lotion bars, it does the same as the arrow root you use

These are very purse friendly in the tin. I've seen folks offer "refills" for a discounted price, so the tin gets reused.
Have you tried Shrink-Wrap Bags?
Very informative
Hello, i was just wondering if i could add dyes or glitter into the bar without messing the bar up? Also, how long would the shelf life be? Thank you so much!
Suggested shelf life is 1-2 years. And you can add any skin safe colorants or glitters👍
How do you calculate you fragrance/essential in your solid lotion bar.
I use the IFRA recommendations for lotion based on the total volume of the recipe.
I wonder how these would look poured directly into the tin.
Do fragrances with Vanillian in them turn these brown like they do CP soap?
They can beige up a bit, but nothing like the brown in CP soap.
How tall are your bars? The tin measurment is .95 inches tall. So do you make these like .8 inches tall?
I fill the mold to the top, and it's just under 1"
What a great idea! I was thinking about a way to use my bees wax, but filling 20 lipbalm tubes was just too finicky for me. I suggest 1% or so for essential oils..
What is a replacement for shea in soaping? I have someone who is allergic to
In soaping, you'll need to run the numbers thru soap calc. for this, you can replace with any butter you like.
Two questions. What would you say the shelf life is for the lotion bars? Could they be shrink wrapped? Thank you!
I suggest using within a year of making, and I’ve never tried shrink wrapping so I’m not sure..
What category do Lotion Bars fall under IFRA? Thank you.
Cat 5 with the lotions and hand creams.
Thank you for all the information that you are giving us. 🥰 I would like to try to make this lotion bars, but do you think I can use any other butters, like kokum, avocado, murumuru, cupuacu? I have these butters and I am wondering if I could use them to make a luxurious lotion bar. TIA
Yes, definitely. Just keep the ratio of hard oils to liquid oil👍
Thank you very much for your answer! 🥰🤗@@EllenRuthSoap
Can you use fractionated coconut oil? If not what kind of coconut oil do I use?
I use regular (hard) 76 degree coconut oil similar to this : amzn.to/3RvHvDl

I just measure in straight oz or grams👍
@Ellen if applied to wet skin does it need a preservative?
No, the bar is still okay👍

I heat the hard oils and butters just to melting point, you can melt the wax first and add the others later so they don't overheat.
