For anyone that is wondering. 任何 rènhé is the proper way to say "any". And as I mentioned in the video 多少 meaning "any" is actually incorrect towards the beginning of the video. In other words, 我没有多少朋友 would actually be "I don't have many friends" or "I have few friends." So 多少 would mean "how much, how many, many, or much". Adding 没有 just before it would be "not much or not many". However, when adding 根本，基本上，or 几乎 before the statement then the meaning would turn into "I principally/fundamental don't have many friends" or "I basically don't have many friends". That said, I don't anyone personally that speaks that way, at least not in the USA. So the closest translation that I can come up with is "I pretty much don't have any friends" which would mean the same thing as "I basically don't have many friends." Hopefully this helps everyone understand what 根本，基本上, etc does to the sentence. For easier lessons, watch anyone of my other videos, thank you. 😊🙏❤❤❤

Question do you have Chinese friends or a group/organization that speaks Chinese regularly? If not, this is one of the quickest ways. Also a study partner, native or not, that is willing to speak with you only in Mandarin. You’ll get there so much faster, even if you don’t live in China. Of course, living in China is the best way, but that can’t happen right away for all of us. Anyway, let me know if this helps 🙏🤞🏻😊

Pretty cool. I'd like a version of this video without the pinyin. when there is pinyin, the brain tends to watch the pinyin and disregard the Chinese characters. With no pinyin a bit harder at the beginning, but brain goes on autopilot fairly quickly and learns those characters and connects them to the sounds. keep it up!
I agree. I’ve struggled with whether I should put pinyin or leave it out. Maybe in the future I can make two versions of each video and put them in the “with pinyin” and “w/o pinyin” playlists. But I agree. Even though I read Chinese fairly well, if pinyin is there, I have to force myself not to look 👀🤦♂️ lol 😂
Consider putting it in for a few seconds, dropping it, and then occasionally re showing it. Tks! I subscribed. To do a high performance show and hide, cover the alphabetic part (letters) by overlaying the same letters in the background color, and leave the tonal accents showing.
Very interesting way to teach using language chunks you can plug in to different slots. I'm sure it would help with fluency for people who tend to try to build sentences from scratch word by word.
I hope people can memorize the overall flow of each sentence structure and know which words to swap in and out. It definitely helps for speaking fluently. In other words, it takes out all the translating in the head and the guesswork. Thank you for your comment. 😊🙏

I grew up in The Bay Area with a lot of Cantonese speakers but now live in Boston where most people outside Chinatown speak Mandarin Chinese. Just by seeing this spreadsheet I can tell this video is going to be better than most. The tones can be an issue but with practice and learning from native speakers, I know I'll get much more proficiency as I use it. Great video! BuKahjie..

I am studying Mandarin at a major university but find what you offer much more helpful! You are unlocking my understanding of the confusion I have felt when trying to speak correctly. For instance, 打狗看主人. Dǎ gǒu kàn zhǔrén. Mind whose dog it is before you strike seemed something I would never think to say. And speaking of staying on the horse odder still. But I have to remind myself it is NOT English. And strive to learn how it is understood in Chinese culture, which I love. You are helping me with that. Thank you. I sing and record in Chinese, even successfully competing in Chinese college works events and it is good, but that is a script and I am just mimicking what I read in pinyin and hear the pronunciation, and I am a good mimic. Very badly I want to be able to converse and not always use a written translator, which is often wrong because I use the wrong English words to translate. I feel taking your information, writing it out, practicing and studying it repeatedly will be my map out of this maze....so I begin......谢谢 我的中文名字是罗云熙. It was given to me in by my professor, turns out it is a famous male Chinese actor.....hahahhahaha
I have a Chinese roommate but he speaks Fuzhou dialect and is taking Mandarin in college. RATS! I listen to various Chinese videos, which are dubbed in Mandarin, and over time have come to recognize when a subtitle is not saying what the actor is saying but I am a long way from the proficiency you offer. I am able to type pinyin with tones so it converts to characters so I am slowly recognizing more characters. I am taking your lessons, creating my own documents with columns of your words in pinyin and characters (without the background color) putting in the English meanings (the various ones you present to further drill meanings into my mind) on the chart than making a recording of your voice to listen to as I work on creating sentences on my computer and pronouncing the Chinese words properly. And then writing out different sentence combinations from your lessons with translations to practice and own. WHEW! I really love doing this although it is intense. You are fortunate to have a Chinese wife to speak with, thank you again for your hard work, it is very generous of you.😌@@learnpromandarin
I feel like whatever method you use, you’ll pick up on Mandarin relatively quickly, just based your commitment. That’s probably 80% of it right there. Which includes the willingness and bravery to go up to a Chinese native and speak to them or attend social gatherings or clubs that are predominantly conducted in Mandarin. Honestly, there's a couple channels that I recommend for pronunciation, but ultimately it'll depend on who you have as a friend or mentor that speaks Chinese with you or who you decide to imitate. Also as for basic grammar. All my lessons, although are stand alone (supplemental lessons), they assume you know nothing and quickly build to intermediate level of fluency in each video. You really can get fluent between these videos combined with a structured curriculum in the shortest time possible. Now, as for those kinds of lessons, I highly recommend picking up this series of books, if you haven't done so already. amzn.to/47X6p54 It really does help. And gives you the appropriate practice with the most common style sentence structures. My videos take a lot of these lessons and enhances them to an intermediate level quickly. By the time you finish level 3 or 4, provided that you've practiced with someone (native or not) that speaks fluent Chinese, you will become fluent yourself. I can promise that. Most of what is taught in those books, you'll hear from day-to-day. My lessons, teach that plus alternative methods of saying the same phrase, that you might also hear a native speaker say. Hopefully that helps. 😉👍

It's a tough language for sure. But a friend of mine told me once, "Hey you know how stupid we were in highschool?" (Me) "Uh huh" (Him) "Yeah, well, we can speak Chinese fluently now." (Me) "Yeah" (Him) "So that's means just about anybody can do it, I mean, if they put their mind to it." 🧐 It's true, to took a lot of effort and a lot of tears, but we got through it. 😂 If you don't already have a partner that is willing to speak Mandarin with you all the time, whether or not they are native, find one. 😊👍

Beware of that compliment. I've heard it many times over a long life, whenever I pronounce a few sentences in one language. That compliment is to be answered by "Where?" In Chinese. You can make a video 2min long to explain it. It's basically as if in one particular culture it was deemed forbidden to acknowledge one's skill (superiority, competency, etc) so you ask Where? Where That Other Person is, who is being pointed at. If the same notion existed in the Bible it'd be "Thou Shalt Not feel better than your others and Thou Shalt also Not Show any feeling better than others either" When you hear that compliment, your spider sense should tingle because it's a test of your egocentered-ness, a simple litmus test coming from the outside world. They'd respond ”你的中文说得太好了“ or ”你的中文怎么那么好！" 😆The culture is just extremely polite to foreigners who are barely starting to learn Chinese. Which is encouraging at the beginning. ❤ But once they get to really know you, or your Chinese passes a certain level. They might be surprised at first, but then they'll treat you just like anyone else. The compliments aren't as grandiose

This is the first video of yours I'm watching, and you're doing an amazing job! (I'm almost at 10 minutes point) it reminds me of the method used in 'English Grammar in Use' (A self-study reference and practice book for learners of English, by Raymond Murphy) I learned English using that book on my own (well obviously I kept reading and reading and used dictionaries) I wish there was a book like that for other languages. Outlining the [grammatical] structure of a language, after that it just filling in the details which is basically more reading. I hope you have videos like this one for Chinese grammar. The English book I mentioned started simple (but with a roadmap in mind and very good break down of the whole thing) things like present simple, present continuous, past, past continuous, future, etc. ... obviously now that I'm thinking of it "if" comes to mind, "passive" (was done/were done) comes to mind and so on ... if you haven't yet, hope you go to that direction of teaching, it's very effective.

He does an excellent job, so I decided to give it a try and I learned Spanish faster that way than I ever did in high school or college. I was born in an Armenian family, in Tehran, Iran. So we spoke Armenian at home. Also the neighborhood has a lot of Armenians living, so I spoke the language with them too. Persian ('lingua franca' and also the official language of Iran), obviously I learned it first on the streets as a kid, then the school and university material were in Persian. I also lived in Armenia for more than 10 years. So I speak both of the languages quite fluently (like a native's first language) but I would consider my 'mother tongue' to be Armenian, cause I remember as I kid I noticed I had to learn 'a new tonality' for sentences in Persian to make questions, express surprise, etc (on top of new vocabulary and grammar, but changing the tonality [accent] from the 'default (Armenian)' one was tricky 😋😅.) About the book, most welcome, don't mention it cause I guess it's one of the most famous books (if not the most famous.) That's the only book I read for English grammar and after that I just kept reading things in English (I was a computer science major, the good stuff was in English) The book does a very good job of outlining the grammar structure of English language, also it is written for being self studied.@@learnpromandarin

I love hearing about experiences and love for language learning. I wish I had learned more languages. But learning Mandarin as well as a little bit of Spanish. Each language is unique and helps open your understanding to new ideas and ways of thinking, both in the language and the culture of the speakers. Oh this actually goes beyond just 'language learning community' ... I would categorize them as 'really cool people' who like/enjoy sharing their knowledge, teach and help others, generally they are 'learners' too, meaning they enjoy learning new stuff. And it's not limited to 'language learning community,' computer science, physics, mathematics, languages [obviously] it happens in all fields.{Actually I guess computer programmers (geeks) started it, having said that, I also must say, not because of any special merit, but because the technology wasn't there for other things (internet was difficult to use, bandwidth was not there, sound quality was not there, reach was not there (computers were expensive, computers were text only, and on and on) ... so about you wishing you had learned more languages, I guess I have good news for you, now it's the best time to learn languages. When I was 19, 20 who could imagine having a Russian language class with a native Russian teacher, and immediately after that another class with a native Chinese speaker, and another class with a native Italian (all on italki) {it was during the pandemic, so I thought let me try making the quarantine a little bit more interesting and except for the Russian teacher I told the rest I'm just bored and I'm not a student, but I would like to know more about your languages} so you're right on time actually, the ship that went threw a lot of storms shipped and you missed it, the weather is right for a smooth sail now {enjoyable, efficient, never seen before learning experience ... by the way talking Chinese 17, 18 years [ib and off] 😲 ... I was surprised to read that! ... I'm not a language learner, I approach Chinese like I approach Sudoku, I play around with when I'm bored and I want to take my mind off other things. I learned to speak French by throwing myself and my broken French at French people in France for 3 months. Nice thing is the French correct me and they do not speak English well. Now, I can speak French more fluidly than people who actually took years of school French classes. So NOW, I learn the grammar and it's less painful.
I agree. Same here with Chinese. I don’t like teaching grammar rules, because it makes it harder to speak the language. I have often thought that doing something like this would make a fanatic language app. Load with various parts of speech and then have it generate sentences to quiz you with. Does anyone know if anything like this exists?

@@brownnup9782 And can be used with 没有 to become "pretty much doesn't". Whereas it isn't used with 不 in this video. But if I said 他几乎不来， I’m saying “he pretty much doesn’t ever come” or “he hardly ever comes “ something like that. However, when paired up with a verb (like 做) and then 完了 it becomes "almost"😉 I try not to explain too many rules in the videos, because sometimes you can get bogged down by too much grammar and it becomes hard to get a sentence out. Hopefully that helps 😊👍
😂 yep, It’s tough for sure. I stopped using/studying for a long time myself. I picked it back up again, because I have a reason to use it now. That’s the driving factor.
Good question. 为了 means in order to at the beginning of a sentence. 来 has more meaning than just “to” or “in order to”, but in this sentence that’s the closest translation you’re going to get. You will find in the Pleco app that there are at least 36 different usages for the character 来 and how they can be used in English. So if I said “in order to study Chinese, I use a dictionary.” 为了学中文，我用一个词典。Therefore I use 为了 at the beginning of the sentence. But if I say “I use a dictionary in order to study Chinese.” Or “I use a dictionary to study Chinese” which means the same thing, I can use 来 in this case 我用词典来学中文。 And I place it in the middle of the sentence before the verb. Idk if you’ve studied other European languages like Spanish, they use “para” as in “in order to” before a verb in the middle of a sentence for the same reason. Hopefully this helps. After about 4000 hours(wild guess, it’s been 15 years) of learning Mandarin Chinese I’ve seen it all. I’m still not conversational but actually what you show is a fun way to do busy work in Starbucks and be creative with sentences. You can do it with any sentence. I’ve filled one or the other 40 page notebook with splitting up sentences like this. Just make sure it’s a legit sentence from a real conversation or a real book, and not the artificial 💩 you get from school books. If you download Chinese Text Analyser you will see for yourself that 30-60% of real life Mandarin Chinese (like a conversation about buying stuff in the supermarket) is NOT covered by HSK1-6. So basically HSK is a waste of time (or a great business, depends on your viewpoint) but studying and playing with real sentences like shown in this video will help you more. I guess.
That is really well put. Same with those learning English. How many textbooks in the US, or California anyway, say “imunna get su’m tuh eat”. None, they’ll say “I’m going to (or gonna) get something to eat.” And that’ll work for most people. But then most people over here don’t say it textbook style with perfect pronunciation and grammar, and somehow everyone still understands each other 🤔 Welp, that’s my observation of Chinese. I do learn some things from HSK textbooks every now and then, but mostly it’s an explanation of words I already learned from just speaking with Chinese, and then they proceed to break all the rules 🤣 Thank you for your comment 🙏 I hope to provide value to all those learning Mandarin. @zeebest1004 I’ve heard of this theory. There’s a lot of debate as to which way is best 🤔 Well, I’d say all of them lol. Just put in the work and you’ll become fluent 😉 Now, I do agree with you. In fact, I highly recommend at least two other channels to watch with which I have no affiliation, but think everyone would benefit. Tons of amazing listening comprehension. LiaoDan is an amazing teacher and her pronunciation is the closest thing to perfect. Not all natives have a perfectly clear and standard “Mandarin “ pronunciation. Chinese natives even discuss this issue all the time (their own pronunciation). I pinned the links in my comment at the top. The other is a channel with 3 Chinese natives that discuss a variety of topics. Both excellent channels. Now, couple that with the ability to construct your own sentences that mimic the native, as well as a short period of time (I’d say 6 months to a year) and voila! You’re fluent. When I say fluent, I don’t mean perfect. But you’ll be able to and have the confidence to speak on a variety of topics fluently. Good luck! 加油！😊👍🏻❤️
You've been learning Chinese for 15 years and you're not fluent? I guess you have to have talent to not be conversational after 15 years with so many learning tools these days
If you can't even hold a conversation after 15 years, then you are doing something wrong. I know people who are conversational in under 6 months. You desperately need real immersion and not grammar drills in notebooks

I will put up a video showing how to type in Chinese on the phone and on the computer soon 😊 Characters or pinyin (with or without tones) are all acceptable 😉 Below are the answers in characters 1- 我根本不想去 2- 你根本不想做作业 3- 他们做完了吗？ 4- 他们几乎做完了， 他们差不多做完了，or 他们马上做完了。 Any one of those would be correct. In an earlier comment, a Chinese viewer mentioned that you could also say 他们快做完了。 All of these would be correct, and I’m sure there’s even more ways than that. 😉 At first it might seem daunting, but after a while, it is fun to learn all these ways. It seems like just an application of all the vocabulary and grammar you've learnt to think of new sentences. But in order to do that, you need to learn those grammars and vocabs individually first anyway. This probably isn't beginner friendly, probably for those who already know quite a few things already.
That’s quite true for this video. Other videos start off with simpler vocabulary and grammar. That said, it saves sooo much time for others that haven’t come across similar vocabulary or sentence structures. I learned Spanish this way and was sooo much faster than my college Spanish class. I was able to construct my own sentences without having to think about grammar rules. This method is so powerful, if you’re learning any language. Thanks for the comment

Good question. Interestingly enough, a lot of verbs can become nouns, and adverbs can become adjectives and vice versa. The Chinese language is very 灵活 (flexible) when it comes to this. So in this case when you say 做作业 it means to do homework/assignment. I looked up what possible verbs it could be, the examples actually all sound like nouns as well, ie field “operations”, or field “work” as in 野外作业. Or underwater operation as in 水下作业. But personally, I’ve never heard of these nouns before anyway. Or it’s just not as common in day to day conversation. It does look like it can mean to “operate”, but not in the medical sense, that would be 手术. Maybe more like operate machinery or something like that. If you know of any or could give me any examples of when it is used as a verb, I’d be interested. Thanks. 🙏

11:10 the le is not redundant since it is the old word liao "finish" grammaticalized to an aspect marker that indicates a final state. without it what u say could also be interpreted as a very (c)rude imperative sentence instead of describing the actual state of affairs right now
Yes. It is used for 东西 and for 事情. They just don’t use it nearly as much as we do in English. For example, 是昨天买的。 “Was yesterday bought.” Makes no sense in English, but it does in Chinese. If you put “it” at the beginning of the sentence, then it would make more “It was bought yesterday.” Of course there’s the difference in word order. But in this case, “it” or any noun that is known to the speaker and listener can be omitted. For us we have to say “it”
Yep as well as “you” in imperative sentences or when giving suggestions. You could use it, but they hardly ever do. I was talking to my mother-in-law about 它 I said you guys hardly ever use it. She responded, no we always use it 😂😂😂 That’s why I’m teaching Chinese, because foreigners to the language, like you and I, notice more what they do and don’t do more than they notice. When I was young, my parents always had foreign exchange students living with us. They always noticed more about how we said things in English than me or my brothers. We don’t think about how we say stuff in our native language, we just say it. After I gave my mother-in-law a couple examples, she realized that they hardly use 它 😉😂

Good question. It is used everyday, or at least very frequently. The idea here is to understand how to express yourself like a native. It may not be those exact examples, however I’ve heard natives exaggerate with those exact phrases 😉 他根本没有多少钱。 In each video, which are stand-alone lessons, I stray from beginner in the particular phrases I’m teaching and move to intermediate level sentences. All of which are practical, common ways of speaking. Used quite frequently. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for the question 😊🙏
As a native speaker, it depends on context too. For example, even though 根本means pretty much, if you want to say "I pretty much don't have a lot of friends", 基本上 and 几乎fit a lot better. If you were to use 根本:"我根本没多小朋友", it just sounds off. Not sure how to explain it but it's one of those things that you just have to keep practicing to differentiate.
I understand what you mean. Kinda like saying “grab me one of them tools” but plenty of people say it throughout the United States. I feel more comfortable saying “grab me one of those tools”. Hearing “them” used that way at first sounded weird to me, but then I got used to it. Using 根本 in the way I mentioned it, as a person that lives with natives 😉, I’d say sounds natural to me. I can’t explain it, except I know they use it that way to exaggerate. Do you think it’s possible, that you’re from a different area of China? For anyone that is wondering. 任何 rènhé is the proper way to say "any". And as I mentioned in the video 多少 meaning "any" is actually incorrect towards the beginning of the video. In other words, 我没有多少朋友 would actually be "I don't have many friends" or "I have few friends." So 多少 would mean "how much, how many, many, or much". Adding 没有 just before it would be "not much or not many".
However, when adding 根本，基本上，or 几乎 before the statement then the meaning would turn into "I principally/fundamental don't have many friends" or "I basically don't have many friends". That said, I don't anyone personally that speaks that way, at least not in the USA. So the closest translation that I can come up with is "I pretty much don't have any friends" which would mean the same thing as "I basically don't have many friends." Hopefully this helps everyone understand what 根本，基本上, etc does to the sentence.

Question do you have Chinese friends or a group/organization that speaks Chinese regularly? If not, this is one of the quickest ways. Also a study partner, native or not, that is willing to speak with you only in Mandarin. You’ll get there so much faster, even if you don’t live in China. Of course, living in China is the best way, but that can’t happen right away for all of us.

Pretty cool. I'd like a version of this video without the pinyin. when there is pinyin, the brain tends to watch the pinyin and disregard the Chinese characters. With no pinyin a bit harder at the beginning, but brain goes on autopilot fairly quickly and learns those characters and connects them to the sounds. keep it up!
I agree. I’ve struggled with whether I should put pinyin or leave it out. Maybe in the future I can make two versions of each video and put them in the “with pinyin” and “w/o pinyin” playlists. But I agree. Even though I read Chinese fairly well, if pinyin is there, I have to force myself not to look 👀🤦♂️ lol 😂

Very interesting way to teach using language chunks you can plug in to different slots. I'm sure it would help with fluency for people who tend to try to build sentences from scratch word by word.
I hope people can memorize the overall flow of each sentence structure and know which words to swap in and out. It definitely helps for speaking fluently. In other words, it takes out all the translating in the head and the guesswork. Thank you for your comment. 😊🙏

I grew up in The Bay Area with a lot of Cantonese speakers but now live in Boston where most people outside Chinatown speak Mandarin Chinese. Just by seeing this spreadsheet I can tell this video is going to be better than most.
The tones can be an issue but with practice and learning from native speakers, I know I'll get much more proficiency as I use it.

I am studying Mandarin at a major university but find what you offer much more helpful! You are unlocking my understanding of the confusion I have felt when trying to speak correctly. For instance, 打狗看主人.
Dǎ gǒu kàn zhǔrén. Mind whose dog it is before you strike seemed something I would never think to say. And speaking of staying on the horse odder still. But I have to remind myself it is NOT English. And strive to learn how it is understood in Chinese culture, which I love. You are helping me with that. Thank you. I sing and record in Chinese, even successfully competing in Chinese college works events and it is good, but that is a script and I am just mimicking what I read in pinyin and hear the pronunciation, and I am a good mimic. Very badly I want to be able to converse and not always use a written translator, which is often wrong because I use the wrong English words to translate. I feel taking your information, writing it out, practicing and studying it repeatedly will be my map out of this maze....so I begin......谢谢 我的中文名字是罗云熙. It was given to me in by my professor, turns out it is a famous male Chinese actor.....hahahhahaha

I have a Chinese roommate but he speaks Fuzhou dialect and is taking Mandarin in college. RATS! I listen to various Chinese videos, which are dubbed in Mandarin, and over time have come to recognize when a subtitle is not saying what the actor is saying but I am a long way from the proficiency you offer. I am able to type pinyin with tones so it converts to characters so I am slowly recognizing more characters. I am taking your lessons, creating my own documents with columns of your words in pinyin and characters (without the background color) putting in the English meanings (the various ones you present to further drill meanings into my mind) on the chart than making a recording of your voice to listen to as I work on creating sentences on my computer and pronouncing the Chinese words properly. And then writing out different sentence combinations from your lessons with translations to practice and own. WHEW! I really love doing this although it is intense. You are fortunate to have a Chinese wife to speak with, thank you again for your hard work, it is very generous of you.😌@@learnpromandarin
I feel like whatever method you use, you’ll pick up on Mandarin relatively quickly, just based your commitment. That’s probably 80% of it right there. Which includes the willingness and bravery to go up to a Chinese native and speak to them or attend social gatherings or clubs that are predominantly conducted in Mandarin. The rest is material and method

Honestly, there's a couple channels that I recommend for pronunciation, but ultimately it'll depend on who you have as a friend or mentor that speaks Chinese with you or who you decide to imitate.

Also as for basic grammar. All my lessons, although are stand alone (supplemental lessons), they assume you know nothing and quickly build to intermediate level of fluency in each video. You really can get fluent between these videos combined with a structured curriculum in the shortest time possible.
Now, as for those kinds of lessons, I highly recommend picking up this series of books, if you haven't done so already. amzn.to/47X6p54
It really does help. And gives you the appropriate practice with the most common style sentence structures. My videos take a lot of these lessons and enhances them to an intermediate level quickly.
By the time you finish level 3 or 4, provided that you've practiced with someone (native or not) that speaks fluent Chinese, you will become fluent yourself.
I can promise that. Most of what is taught in those books, you'll hear from day-to-day. My lessons, teach that plus alternative methods of saying the same phrase, that you might also hear a native speaker say. Hopefully that helps. 😉👍

Beware of that compliment. I've heard it many times over a long life, whenever I pronounce a few sentences in one language. That compliment is to be answered by "Where?" In Chinese. You can make a video 2min long to explain it. It's basically as if in one particular culture it was deemed forbidden to acknowledge one's skill (superiority, competency, etc) so you ask Where? Where That Other Person is, who is being pointed at. If the same notion existed in the Bible it'd be "Thou Shalt Not feel better than your others and Thou Shalt also Not Show any feeling better than others either"
When you hear that compliment, your spider sense should tingle because it's a test of your egocentered-ness, a simple litmus test coming from the outside world. Responding by Talking about your Relative Merit is not the way to pass that test.

They'd respond ”你的中文说得太好了“ or ”你的中文怎么那么好！" 😆The culture is just extremely polite to foreigners who are barely starting to learn Chinese. Which is encouraging at the beginning. ❤
But once they get to really know you, or your Chinese passes a certain level. They might be surprised at first, but then they'll treat you just like anyone else. The compliments aren't as grandiose

This is the first video of yours I'm watching, and you're doing an amazing job! (I'm almost at 10 minutes point) it reminds me of the method used in 'English Grammar in Use' (A self-study reference and practice book for learners of English, by Raymond Murphy) I learned English using that book on my own (well obviously I kept reading and reading and used dictionaries) I wish there was a book like that for other languages. Outlining the [grammatical] structure of a language, after that it just filling in the details which is basically more reading. I hope you have videos like this one for Chinese grammar. The English book I mentioned started simple (but with a roadmap in mind and very good break down of the whole thing) things like present simple, present continuous, past, past continuous, future, etc. ... obviously now that I'm thinking of it "if" comes to mind, "passive" (was done/were done) comes to mind and so on ... if you haven't yet, hope you go to that direction of teaching, it's very effective.

He does an excellent job, so I decided to give it a try and I learned Spanish faster that way than I ever did in high school or college. I stopped studying Spanish, because I decided to focus in this channel, and using the same method. It really works! Btw, what is your mother tongue, if you don’t mind me asking? I was born in an Armenian family, in Tehran, Iran. So we spoke Armenian at home. Also the neighborhood has a lot of Armenians living, so I spoke the language with them too. Persian ('lingua franca' and also the official language of Iran), obviously I learned it first on the streets as a kid, then the school and university material were in Persian. I also lived in Armenia for more than 10 years. So I speak both of the languages quite fluently (like a native's first language) but I would consider my 'mother tongue' to be Armenian, cause I remember as I kid I noticed I had to learn 'a new tonality' for sentences in Persian to make questions, express surprise, etc (on top of new vocabulary and grammar, but changing the tonality [accent] from the 'default (Armenian)' one was tricky 😋😅.) About the book, most welcome, don't mention it cause I guess it's one of the most famous books (if not the most famous.) That's the only book I read for English grammar and after that I just kept reading things in English (I was a computer science major, the good stuff was in English) The book does a very good job of outlining the grammar structure of English language, also it is written for being self studied.@@learnpromandarin

I wish I had learned more languages. But learning Mandarin as well as a little bit of Spanish. I can say that I’m fascinated with each language’s ability to express yourself. Each language is unique and helps open your understanding to new ideas and ways of thinking, both in the language and the culture of the speakers.
Btw, when I started this channel, I thought I was only reaching out to Americans because of my perspective of teaching the language. I was completely surprised to see people from all over the world viewing and subscribing to this channel.

Oh this actually goes beyond just 'language learning community' ... I would categorize them as 'really cool people' who like/enjoy sharing their knowledge, teach and help others, generally they are 'learners' too, meaning they enjoy learning new stuff. And it's not limited to 'language learning community,' computer science, physics, mathematics, languages [obviously] it happens in all fields.{Actually I guess computer programmers (geeks) started it, having said that, I also must say, not because of any special merit, but because the technology wasn't there for other things (internet was difficult to use, bandwidth was not there, sound quality was not there, reach was not there (computers were expensive, computers were text only, and on and on) ... so about you wishing you had learned more languages, I guess I have good news for you, now it's the best time to learn languages. When I was 19, 20 who could imagine having a Russian language class with a native Russian teacher, and immediately after that another class with a native Chinese speaker, and another class with a native Italian (all on italki) {it was during the pandemic, so I thought let me try making the quarantine a little bit more interesting and except for the Russian teacher I told the rest I'm just bored and I'm not a student, but I would like to know more about your languages} so you're right on time actually, the ship that went threw a lot of storms shipped and you missed it, the weather is right for a smooth sail now {enjoyable, efficient, never seen before learning experience ... by the way talking Chinese 17, 18 years [ib and off] 😲 ... I was surprised to read that! ... I'm not a language learner, I approach Chinese like I approach Sudoku, I play around with when I'm bored and I want to take my mind off other things. But certainly I'll keep in touch! I learned to speak French by throwing myself and my broken French at French people in France for 3 months. Nice thing is the French correct me and they do not speak English well. Now, I can speak French more fluidly than people who actually took years of school French classes. So NOW, I learn the grammar and it's less painful.
I agree. Same here with Chinese. I don’t like teaching grammar rules, because it makes it harder to speak the language. I like teaching it this way, because it’s like having a friend just telling you how to say, not why it makes sense or the rules behind it. 😁

I eventually need to go back to working on my Spanish, but sometimes I feel like my Chinese needs a lot of work 😬 No matter how much I learn, I always feel there’s room for improvement.

I have often thought that doing something like this would make a fanatic language app. Load with various parts of speech and then have it generate sentences to quiz you with. Does anyone know if anything like this exists?

没有 to become "pretty much doesn't". Whereas it isn't used with 不 in this video. But if I said 他几乎不来， I’m saying “he pretty much doesn’t ever come” or “he hardly ever comes “ something like that.
However, when paired up with a verb (like 做) and then 完了 it becomes "almost"😉
I try not to explain too many rules in the videos, because sometimes you can get bogged down by too much grammar and it becomes hard to get a sentence out. Hopefully that helps 😊👍

are you sure that Lai as in "in order to" is written with that character? Isn't it supposed to be 为了
Good question. 为了 means in order to at the beginning of a sentence. 来 has more meaning than just “to” or “in order to”, but in this sentence that’s the closest translation you’re going to get. You will find in the Pleco app that there are at least 36 different usages for the character 来 and how they can be used in English.
So if I said “in order to study Chinese, I use a dictionary.” 为了学中文，我用一个词典。Therefore I use 为了 at the beginning of the sentence. But if I say “I use a dictionary in order to study Chinese.” Or “I use a dictionary to study Chinese” which means the same thing, I can use 来 in this case 我用词典来学中文。 And I place it in the middle of the sentence before the verb.
Idk if you’ve studied other European languages like Spanish, they use “para” as in “in order to” before a verb in the middle of a sentence for the same reason.

After about 4000 hours(wild guess, it’s been 15 years) of learning Mandarin Chinese I’ve seen it all. I’m still not conversational but actually what you show is a fun way to do busy work in Starbucks and be creative with sentences. You can do it with any sentence. I’ve filled one or the other 40 page notebook with splitting up sentences like this. Just make sure it’s a legit sentence from a real conversation or a real book, and not the artificial 💩 you get from school books. If you download Chinese Text Analyser you will see for yourself that 30-60% of real life Mandarin Chinese (like a conversation about buying stuff in the supermarket) is NOT covered by HSK1-6. So basically HSK is a waste of time (or a great business, depends on your viewpoint) but studying and playing with real sentences like shown in this video will help you more. I guess.
That is really well put. Same with those learning English. How many textbooks in the US, or California anyway, say “imunna get su’m tuh eat”. None, they’ll say “I’m going to (or gonna) get something to eat.” And that’ll work for most people. But then most people over here don’t say it textbook style with perfect pronunciation and grammar, and somehow everyone still understands each other 🤔
Welp, that’s my observation of Chinese. I do learn some things from HSK textbooks every now and then, but mostly it’s an explanation of words I already learned from just speaking with Chinese, and then they proceed to break all the rules 🤣

Now, I do agree with you. In fact, I highly recommend at least two other channels to watch with which I have no affiliation, but think everyone would benefit. Tons of amazing listening comprehension. LiaoDan is an amazing teacher and her pronunciation is the closest thing to perfect. Not all natives have a perfectly clear and standard “Mandarin “ pronunciation. Chinese natives even discuss this issue all the time (their own pronunciation). I pinned the links in my comment at the top. The other is a channel with 3 Chinese natives that discuss a variety of topics. Both excellent channels.
Now, couple that with the ability to construct your own sentences that mimic the native, as well as a short period of time (I’d say 6 months to a year) and voila! You’re fluent.
When I say fluent, I don’t mean perfect. But you’ll be able to and have the confidence to speak on a variety of topics fluently. Good luck! 加油！😊👍🏻❤️

In an earlier comment, a Chinese viewer mentioned that you could also say 他们快做完了。 All of these would be correct, and I’m sure there’s even more ways than that. 😉
At first it might seem daunting, but after a while, it is fun to learn all these ways. I promise you’ll enjoy it.

It seems like just an application of all the vocabulary and grammar you've learnt to think of new sentences. But in order to do that, you need to learn those grammars and vocabs individually first anyway. This probably isn't beginner friendly, probably for those who already know quite a few things already.
That’s quite true for this video. Other videos start off with simpler vocabulary and grammar. That said, it saves sooo much time for others that haven’t come across similar vocabulary or sentence structures. I learned Spanish this way and was sooo much faster than my college Spanish class. I was able to construct my own sentences without having to think about grammar rules. This method is so powerful, if you’re learning any language. Thanks for the comment

Good question. Interestingly enough, a lot of verbs can become nouns, and adverbs can become adjectives and vice versa. The Chinese language is very 灵活 (flexible) when it comes to this. So in this case when you say 做作业 it means to do homework/assignment. I looked up what possible verbs it could be, the examples actually all sound like nouns as well, ie field “operations”, or field “work” as in 野外作业. Or underwater operation as in 水下作业. But personally, I’ve never heard of these nouns before anyway. Or it’s just not as common in day to day conversation. It does look like it can mean to “operate”, but not in the medical sense, that would be 手术. Maybe more like operate machinery or something like that. If you know of any or could give me any examples of when it is used as a verb, I’d be interested. Thanks. 🙏

Yes. It is used for 东西 and for 事情. They just don’t use it nearly as much as we do in English.
For example, 是昨天买的。 “Was yesterday bought.” Makes no sense in English, but it does in Chinese. If you put “it” at the beginning of the sentence, then it would make more “It was bought yesterday.” Of course there’s the difference in word order. But in this case, “it” or any noun that is known to the speaker and listener can be omitted. For us we have to say “it”

That’s why I’m teaching Chinese, because foreigners to the language, like you and I, notice more what they do and don’t do more than they notice.
When I was young, my parents always had foreign exchange students living with us. They always noticed more about how we said things in English than me or my brothers. We don’t think about how we say stuff in our native language, we just say it.
After I gave my mother-in-law a couple examples, she realized that they hardly use 它 😉😂

Good question. It is used everyday, or at least very frequently. The idea here is to understand how to express yourself like a native. It may not be those exact examples, however I’ve heard natives exaggerate with those exact phrases 😉 他根本没有多少钱。
In each video, which are stand-alone lessons, I stray from beginner in the particular phrases I’m teaching and move to intermediate level sentences. All of which are practical, common ways of speaking. Used quite frequently. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for the question 😊🙏
As a native speaker, it depends on context too. For example, even though 根本means pretty much, if you want to say "I pretty much don't have a lot of friends", 基本上 and 几乎fit a lot better. If you were to use 根本:"我根本没多小朋友", it just sounds off. Not sure how to explain it but it's one of those things that you just have to keep practicing to differentiate.
I understand what you mean. Kinda like saying “grab me one of them tools” but plenty of people say it throughout the United States. I feel more comfortable saying “grab me one of those tools”. Hearing “them” used that way at first sounded weird to me, but then I got used to it.
Using 根本 in the way I mentioned it, as a person that lives with natives 😉, I’d say sounds natural to me. I can’t explain it, except I know they use it that way to exaggerate.
Do you think it’s possible, that you’re from a different area of China? I don’t want to discount your opinion, but since I’ve heard this usage first hand, I don’t want to discount their Mandarin speaking ability. Naw mean? 😉
