I am more an album guy than a band/genre guy, but here's my journey:
Age 4-6: My father had AC/DC, Accept and Deep Purple CDs. My mother had a Depeche Mode and ABBA best of and listened to modern pop music as well as some mainstream EDM.
Age 7-12: More or less the Dark Ages. Didn't care much about music, only liked a few German Rock bands. Played racing games like Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Burnout Paradise. The latter introduced my to Alice In Chains and Guns N Roses.
Age 13-16: Was hugely into Alternative Metal/Grunge: Tool, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, SOAD, RATM and also a little bit of German Rap. Later on I didn't care much for that latter.
Age 17-19: Was into Progressive Metal and Rock: Gojira, Meshuggah, Dream Theater (a band I don't like that much nowadays), King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, Camel and Rush. Then I got into Opeth and they opened up Extreme Metal for me.
Age 20 - today: Hugely into Death, Black and Doom Metal (especially 90s stuff). My favorites are: Brutality, Gorement, Demilich, Death, Bolt Thrower, Autopsy, Sacramentum, Burzum, Verdunkeln, Celtic Frost, Blut aus Nord, early Katatonia, Warning, Hooded Menance, disEMBOWELMENT and Runemagick. I also like Trip Hop like (Massive Attack, Portishead) Gothic Rock (Bauhaus, The Cure, Fields of the Nephilim) and Folk (Nick Drake, Comus).

my musical journey kinda went backwards lmao, was listening to a bit of nu metal at first but for some reason immediately jumped to black metal after that when i was about 12 years old because i guess i found it so evil and edgy and cool lol. years later i started actually going backwards and discovering stuff like progressive and other genres of metal until my mid to late teens in which other genres aside from metal took a hold on me, especially electronic and pop but i pretty much wanted to know as much as possible about as many genres as i could. now, at 24 years old, i'm back in a big black metal phase, obviously in a more thought out way as opposed to 12 years ago, but i still love to check out new stuff from every genre. i'm sure i left out a lot of stuff but those were the main points in my musical evolution

I was introduced to Depeche Mode very young as well and I remember really enjoying it, but then there was an at least 15 year gap where I didn't listen to them at all. When discovering them again, it was the biggest nostalgia blast and I have the hugest appreciation for them, even as someone that listens primarily to metal

My music journey starts with Eminem because my mom listened to him, so i discovered other rap artists like 2pac or nwa, then i was introduced to rock by the cod community because they made montages with rock or metalcore songs, from there i was interested of what was metal and i discovered metallica, pantera, and in years i continued to search for more underground bands

I did the same thing where I almost exclusively listened to one band at a time for a few months before moving onto the next band when I was younger too, basically going through phases. But once you get older and the amount of different bands and sounds you have already heard has increased it takes a really special band these days to get me fully hooked to them like I used to get hooked on bands

My musical journey was strange. I grew up in a very religious house and music was not pushed on me in any way The only music I really knew was my dad's songs he play on the classical guitar, which I love. I still love classical guitar. And up till about third grade The only songs I ever really knew like the only ones that got stuck in my head unfortunately were church songs and songs from commercials. And then one time I had to sit in the truck for a while with my dad's friend's son and he popped in Metallica and I heard One, And I didn't know who it was or what it was I just heard it and it blew my mind and then I was sent back into my normal life. And it was so strange loving a song that you can't even remember how it goes or who does it or anything it wouldn't be until several years later I'd find out who it was. And that was from my friend Mike who's very versed in all kinds of music and he got me on the metal train hard. I think I was in 6th grade when he lent me the head bangers ball volume 1 CD to go on a church trip no less and my mind was opened up to children of bodom, Slayer, Lamb of God, cradle of Filth, And I vibed with that one song mannequin from cradle of Filth for months afterwards much like Wyatt. Since then my journey has been all over the place absorbing as much music as I can except for reggae cuz I really don't like it, with the exception of bitty bong bong from Eek-A-Mouse, I can't even really describe it but I can describe the beginning. No one's probably going to read this so I don't know why I did it but there you go

Great video as always Wyatt, my journey with music started back when I was like five years old, it was back when I got my first pc for my birthday, I remember downloading DOOM on my old pc and the soundtrack kicked in, damn man I was blown away, I've played DOOM numerous times, I also remember Quake 2 Soundtrack, pretty damn good too, then when I turned 10, I started listening to geek rap, I remember listening to Tauz and 7 minutos, then by the age of 15 I was listening to the same stuff that my friends were listening to back then, like Pop and Electronic music, then I got bored of those genres and started looking for something new, then I've came across metal, I've started listening to Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Savatage, Running Wild, Judas Priest, then finally I've discovered your channel, and honestly I can't thank you enough, 90% of the stuff that I listen to now, I've discovered on your channel lol, thanks a lot dude, cheers

I didn't really listen to much music until I was about 13 ( Ithink?) when a classmate showed me Sabaton and I was blown away... I didn't really dig deeper for more metal for whatever reason, until I was staying at a friend's house for a sleepover and we were playing guitar hero and that is where I discovered DragonForce and my obsession with metal snowballed from there. I discovered other bands such as Iron Maiden, Metallica and Slipknot on my own, and Amon Amarth later on, who were my first extreme metal band. So I owe a huge thanks to cheesy european power metal for introducing me into this lovely and fun genre of music. My life would be very different (and likely much worse) without extreme metal.
Edit: I forgot to mention I got into many of my current favorite bands like Dyscarnate, Deathspell Omega or Arghoslent through your youtube channel so I am very thankful for that.

Oh and also discovering your channel got me into experimental metal, thx its not a regret to know em!

It's always interesting to hear how people have discovered music. The most important thing is to never stand still or at least be open to new things (at least some of the time).
My musical journey started with Eurodance. That was a very popular genre (in Germany) in the mainstream and on the radio at that time (for example Eifel 65 Blue (Da Ba Dee)). I was about 8/9 years old at that time and loved that stuff. But then there was an important event: There was a rival channel in Germany to MTV, called VIVA. At that time, music videos were also shown there. And in 2005, Rammstein videos were also shown frequently. Links 2 3 4 was one of them, and the song really grabbed me. The brute sound, the hard guitars, the pounding rhythm and the music video anyway. Since my father was also a Rammstein fan, he made me a cassette with Rammstein songs back then (of course there were already CDs back then, but my parents were from the DDR and a lot of old stuff was still used there).
Then I began to take an active interest in music. I also got a lot from my mother: A Queen CD (Best of I), a Led Zeppelin CD (Mothership), Die Ärzte (a German pop-punk band). Then from my father I got some self-burned CDs (various AC DC songs, Alice Cooper, Guano Apes (German cross-over band), Black Sabbath).
At first I found this retro rock lame and only got into it bit by bit. Before that I listened to Bullet For My Valentine and Papa Roach. Then came the phase where I only listened to 70/80 bands and was such a sucky smartass (music used to be better). A boomer in the body of a 16 year old. If I would have started a band back then, something like Greta Van Fleet would have come out.
At some point I discovered the 90 (grunge, crossover, groove metal, Britpop etc.). After that came the more extreme stuff like Death Metal, Black Metal. Today, I just listen to what I like, whether it's new or old. The important thing is that I discover something new, that I enjoy and that moves me.
Right now this is Primus for me. So far I only knew Too Many Puppies and My Name is Mud. But my goodness, now that I've listened to it intensely, I have to say, this band sucks!!!!
    Greeting from Germany :)

I see you Defeated Sanity "Passages Into Deformity" Vinyl 😁🤘
I grew up with my Mom listening to AC/DC, '80's Hair bands, and my Dad rocking Rush, Black Sabbath, Buddy Holly, Eric Johnson, stuff like that. Got introduced to Slayer in '91 or '92 as a kid, and heard Cannibal Corpse with the first Ace Ventura Pet Detective movie, there was no looking back after that lol.
Old Comcast Digital Cable's Music station channels (like 1999/2000/2001 way back in the day) had a banger Metal channel too, played everything from Nile to Dark Funeral and in between, that and MTV's Headbanger's Ball and VH-1 and Uranium/ Fuse, it was glorious.
I was a fiend for the brick and mortar CD/ Record Stores too, Sam Goody, Exclusive Company, local spots (Earwax Records, RIP) were such a good avenue to expand the discovery and indulgence of Metal-- then Napster and Utorrent came along, then "poof", we're at today with all the digital streaming and marketplace stores and promotion channels on YT and otherwise.

i started off with just listening to standard pop music that was on the radio. then i discovered rap and then i just kept getting deeper and deeper in the rap scene. i eventually got to very distorted beats with very distorted vocals and just flat out the most violent lyrics ever. i listened to all that for about four years then i discovered metal. i was just sick at home one day and a video on my recommended popped up. it was actually the death metal iceberg. i watched that video and was so intrigued by this style of music. after the video ended i went back and checked out a lot of the bands and i found myself actually enjoying them. i usually ALWAYS used to just despise metal because i was one of those people that thought it was all the same lol. after i found death metal, i got into black metal but i was first introduced to the more brutal black metal, like war metal and i absolutely loved it. chaotic music always has a place in my heart. after i was listening to that for a month or two, i felt like exploring new genres. i discovered grindcore and i just loved how aggressive and loud and hectic all of the bands i heard were. now, i pretty much just listen to bdm, osdm, noisegrind, deathgrind, sbdm, war metal, lots of fucking deathcore and more. well, still listening to the distorted asf rap as well

My music journey (I.E. when you really start to care about what you are listening to) started with classical music: my father works in this field as an entrepeneur in Milan (I'm Italian btw) and my town, Brescia, and he started to bring me to concerts quite early in my life. Classical music remains, still to these days, an inspiration to go on and find new meaningful sounds and art expressions. My interest in popular music started fairly late, in the latter years of high school: I was interested in expanding my horizons through the history of rock, pop, hip hop, jazz etc., so I found out what is still one of my basis for discovering new music, that is the Italian webzine Ondarock. Ondarock has the great quality of talking about many different genres in quite a deep and encyclopedical way, with reviews (of course), monographs, essays. My first important listenings were mainly classic rock (especially The Beatles, which became an all time fav) and, then, progressive rock, as I felt it was a natural prosecution of my "oldie" background (shout out to Henry Cow, a band that literally blew my away and became a personal constant inspiration, as you can see from my account image). Then my main discovery was post punk through the illuminating reading of "Rip it up" by Simon Reynolds: this book has literally changed my life, because it challenged me to reconsider the motivations of music as an art form. Now, of course, let's talk about metal. Believe it or not, my initial interest was merely academic: "this is an important brand of popular music, and I feel the urge to understand it". I started to skim through my channels of information and their essays about the genre, and got to know about the big names in the genres, their artistic merits (you know, everything from Metallica to Korn to Meshuggah), but the "thing" really clicked with me only when I read the beautiful essay about Today Is The Day written by Francesco Nunziata, one of the chief editors of Ondarock: mr Nunziata is really a good writer and has a deep knowledge of the matter, and his description of Sadness Will Prevail made me want to know more about this manic and challenging sound. So I bought the CD and made a blind run, and everything wasn't the same anymore. This opus is so erratic, heavy, dark and disturbing that I knew I had just started to scratch the surface of an amazing world of sounds. And so now I like br00tal things because they make me happy.

my music journey was very similar to yours from Korn era to deathcore. I heard the song Face:Face by Norma Jean on some christian station I liked to watch when I was young. Blew my mind completely. Never heard an entire song of screaming before that. I believe the dissonance and chaos of that song really shaped my taste in metal later in life. I also binge albums/genres for extended periods, much longer than 3 months lol.

My mother liked all the well known acts like Kiss, Sabbath, Priest, Van Halen, etc as well as southern rock and the top 40 hits type of stuff. MTV was new and she’d leave it on all day also. But, I had an older cousin that was very important for my musical journey as well. He introduced me to Slayer,Testament, Overkill and some other well known thrash bands. I would watch Headbangers Ball to discover bands like Nuclear Assault and DRI. I’m pretty certain it was 1990 that I saw the video for Suffer the Children by Napalm Death and was blown away by the vocals and blast beats. Discovered Sepultura Arise through HBB too. I bought Incantation Onward in 93 and wrote Relapse for a catalog and that opened a whole new world for me. Tons of bands from all over the world, zines, and demos, plus all the imports. Relapse was the shit back in the day.

I hear a lot about this "need for the extreme", to find what's more intense or whatever, and I've always found it puzzling until I just now realized I was raised on Slipknot as a baby and was listening to some Death and Black Metal as young as 9 or 10 after not caring about music at all until well into age 8. Thanks UA-cam! But as a kid I only didn't go down a death metal rabbit hole because I just wasn't that interested. I liked some of it, but I gravitated more and more to older metal, until I had a hardcore punk and thrash metal phase at age 12 and then immediately went down a journey through all of 80s metal, mostly the traditional stuff like NWOBHM for the next four or five years, with intermittent dives into other forms of metal, and on rare occasion other genres of music. It just takes me a long time to finally dive into stuff, but by now I've gone through some goth rock, post-hardcore, metalcore, 70s classic rock, and will continue on at random, outside of tierlists which I find very nice because it gives a lot of new stuff and I can easily keep track of what I feel about it. I have no regrets listening to one genre for my entire teenage years. I enjoyed it. Other genres have lots of cool stuff but it's all mixed bags, really. Not that I regret branching out either, but I never feel like I "missed out". I don't follow trends though, never cared to listen to what's new or current just because, so there's no reason for me to feel I "missed out."

I grew up hearing my parents' music taste. Tons of classic 70's rock. The Beatles, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd. That combined with radio music in the mid 90's. I remember as a kid being completely captivated by the Marilyn Manson video for Sweet Dreams. Soon after the older kids in my neighborhood began shaping my tastes in music, a lot of Manson, Korn, Prodigy, Rob Zombie, in addition to 2pac and Biggie. Mostly I just enjoyed the harder rock that was landing on MTV.
My own music tastes started forming when I heard 2 specific bands around middle school. Slipknot, and (shockingly, a massive find on college radio) X Japan. My ear began developing in earnest for extreme metal from there, as I also became interested in horror/goth punk via AFI. Shout out as well to Adult Swim exposing me to Daft Punk and Gorillaz, prominently featuring their animated music videos on Adult Swim in the early 00's.
A few years later, after ample listening to visual kei bands like Dir en Grey, Malice Mizer and Moi dix Mois a girlfriend introduced me to Black Dahlia Murder and Cannibal Corpse right around the time a friend let me borrow the "Lords of Chaos" book. That about sealed my fate opening my ear to Death, Black, and the burgeoning Metalcore scene.

in middle school i was introduced to marilyn manson, nine inch nails, korn and all the nu metal bands (it was the late 90s after all). then slipknot, fear factory, and system of a down in high school. i used to watch a lot of mtv2 (back when they just played music videos 24/7) and one night i saw the video for "new noise" by refused and was like "wtf is this?!"
so late high school until mid 20s i was really into hardcore and the screamy emo stuff like orchid, converge, pg99 etc. then a housemate in my late 20s showed me stoner/doom metal like sleep and electric wizard, which led me to discover sludge (eyehategod, burning witch, iron monkey). i got sidetracked along the way by italodisco, then coldwave, then krautrock, then shoegaze, then sorta 80s goth/postpunk/industrial...
then fast forward to 2019 and i was really into this heavy synthwave band called perturbator and going to a bunch of their shows. i ended up following them to a metal festival in las vegas where i got to see carcass, deafheaven, full of hell, electric wizard, goatwhore, etc. then during the pandemic i was trying to buy some full of hell merch online and stumbled across blood incantation, frozen soul, sanguisugabogg and the body. i ended up seeing frozen soul tour with sanguisugabogg and watching a lot of their interviews and videos online. in the comments section i kept hearing about some band called bolt thrower so i decided to check them out.
now im positively obsessed with old school 80s and 90s death metal! theres so much to get into and all of the bands sound so unique and different from each other. some of my favorites atm are obituary, death, morbid angel (their 1st album is insane!), autopsy and just now getting into incantation and suffocation.
i agree with you that you shouldnt get too stuck in one thing and that music appreciation is more of a journey than a destination. im always searching for new stuff (new to me, not necessarily modern) and pushing my boundaries in different directions.

Let me start by sending some love from Portugal (had no idea you had some Portuguese blood in you, not sure if you ever mentioned it) :)
My journey started with the usual TV stuff, like RHCP, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. but none of that stuck with me. I've only discovered my true taste a bit late in life, around 05/06. The first heavy stuff I listened to was Cradle of Filth ("From the Cradle..." I believe) and Nightwish. At the same time, I also discovered Punk Rock, which captivated me in an whole other level. I knew The Clash and The Ramones, but I had no idea that was just the tip of the iceberg. From that moment on, I dove deep into Punk, Oi, Hardcore, Metalcore, Emo, Post-Hardcore and all the derivatives and that's 70% of what I still listen to today. A bit later also fell in love with some noisy stuff, like grindcore and power-violence, besides Thrash and Crossover, but that's not something I listen to regularly. In conclusion, Punk saved my musical taste and in consequence, changed my life (Hardcore taught me lots of lessons). Nowadays, I still listen to some Black/Death, but not that much. PUNK'S NOT DEAD!
Keep in mind that Portugal is a very Metal oriented country, but as far as concert goes, the offer is very minimal. Black Flag, for instance, is making its debut in Portugal next week :D
Love your videos man, keep up with the great work!

I think the first ever album I listened to was Breaking Benjamin- Phobia. Around the time (2007) it'd been a year since it released, and people were uploading AMV's with really trendy music behind them, and I managed to find 'Until The End- A Clone Trooper Montage', with footage from the original Clone Wars series behind it. I watched that, instantly fell in love with BB, and eventually found Disturbed thanks to Need For Speed: Most Wanted. That game gave me a direction to head in, and I vividly remember listening to Bullet For My Valentine- Hand of Blood and Disturbed- Decadence while roaming the streets between missions. I slowly got into Disturbed, listened to David's other band 'Device', and things kinda stopped until I got into middle school.
I got into bands like Miss May I and Asking Alexandria thanks to a friend of mine in tech class, he was the stereotypical 'scene boy' who changed his wallpaper to AA- Stand Up And Scream or MMI- Apologies Are For The Weak. I got curious, listened to both, and said "Holy shit, this is insane", put them on my Ipod Nano, along with Avenged Sevenfold thanks to Call of Duty, and things progressed from there. Got into AA's later stuff, picked up Three Days Grace- Transit of Venus, went back to One-X, picked up Lamb of God after hearing a vocal cover of 512, and stuck with that for a while. I did hear early bits of the 'Prog Deathcore' scene, like Born of Osiris, but it didn't interest me too much until later.
Somewhere in 2016, I picked up Slipknot thanks to All Hope is Gone, heard psychosocial and became mesmerized, and eventually dug into their S/T and Iowa. Man, that was some intense shit. S/T will always be my go-to, but dear god that was an experience. I went back to hear MFKR and Crowz, and somehow crept my way into Suicide Silence- You Can't Stop Me. Not even Mitch era, Eddie era. I listened to 1 SS song, then got recommended Alex Terrible's cover of 'Reign of Darkness' from Thy Art is Murder, then heard my first full "deathcore album", Shadow of Intent's 'Reclaimer'. Loved that, dived into the genre and listened to pretty much everything except some of the more obscure 'Reddit deathcore' bands, and now I'm trickling my way into black metal and death.
I know people don't enjoy the atmospheric black metal as much as normal, but bands like None and Numenorean really hit that itch, and make black metal much more accessible for new listeners. I heard them, slowly got into stuff like Frowning, Autumn Nostalgie, Grima, Exiled From Light, ColdWorld, Well of Night, Escapade To Serenity, and I more recently found Panzerfaust- Holy shit, what a fucking gem. Promethean Fire by them can be on repeat all day and I wouldn't get tired of it. That, I heard Sadness, MGLA, White Ward, Akhlys, and bigger groups like Gaerea and Harakiri For The Sky.
I do see myself getting deeper into doom, I just listened to Dead Congregation and that was a beautiful experience. I have quite a ways to go, but all in due time. I made a Rate Your Music profile and managed to organize most of the albums I've listened to, at about 1300 releases so far. As long as I don't get burnt out too hard, I very much look forward to hearing new stuff, as long as I can remember to go back and listen to the bangers I find along the way.

For me I don't have much recollection of being into music awful much when I was really young. But as I got more access to the internet AKA youtube I discovered the early jazz bands of the 20s and 30s (and surrounding decades). I also got into metal because of my dad and as I went down some YT rabbit holes started to like death metal and other extreme metal forms. Every now and again I dwell in classical but not as much as metal and old jazz. And yes I am one of those misfits that listens to music on YT feel free to make fun but especially for the old stuff youtube just has the highest quantity with some channels having many many thousands of old records vids.

I’ll try to be brief but we’ll see how it goes: my first memories of music were also in my parents’ cars. My mom listened to country and my dad listened to classic rock. So 90s country like Alan Jackson, Brooks and Dunn, etc were some of my first favorite artists. Then I got more into my dad’s taste as I got a little older, and the Eagles were my first real favorite band. This makes sense, looking back, since they had a lot of country influence. Then in the eighth grade I bought a video game, Guitar Hero III, and that really exposed me to a lot of new sounds. The song My Curse by Killswitch Engage really grabbed me, and so I got into that band and started learning about metal. KSE became my new favorite band and I would spend my summer watching recorded episodes of Headbanger’s Ball and learning about the history of metal by watching Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey on VH1. Then I saw the music video for Opeth - Porcelain Heart on Headbanger’s Ball and that blew my mind. I watched it again on UA-cam then dove into their discography. They became my favorite band, and have stayed my favorite band. I then kind of stayed stagnant for a while through college because I just didn’t have any free time. Once I got out of school I got way more into the underground and started following UA-cam channels and reading blogs, etc. Now I’m into bands that I never would’ve listened to a while back, but those were the main points of progression to today.

I got into metal thanks to Guitar Hero III, the soundtracks to the NHL and Madden NFL games, and a family friend of mine who was really into early Bring Me The Horizon, Slipknot, Children of Bodom and early 5 Finger Death Punch. My first favourite metal band was Dragonforce. Then later, I got into Killswitch Engage, Asking Alexandria, Bullet For My Valentine and other bands within metalcore. I had a huge nu-metal phase when I was around 14 when I was obsessed with Korn's 1994 debut (excluding Daddy--I've only ever listened to the full thing once), Static-X, System of a Down and Linkin Park (the last of which my twin brother was a huge fan of around that time as well).
What got me into my current obsession with black metal is a long story. I had first heard of Mayhem, Burzum, etc. not through their music, but through reading about their arson crimes they'd committed as teenagers back in the 90's. So for the longest time, I was so scared to check out black metal because I thought I would end up like one of those members. Then came a little band called Deafheaven and their album Sunbather. Sunbather put me on the path to discover blackgaze and then later atmospheric black metal like Mare Cognitum. But I still didn't check out the classic second-wave bands aside from Immortal and a couple Darkthrone songs because their ideologies and Satanism in general scared me back then.
When I was in high school, I had this awesome resource teacher who was big into metal, and Slayer more specifically. I was previously scared of Slayer and their album covers, but for some reason seeing a very nice person being into Slayer made me go check them out and I became obsessed with them. So Slayer was the first "Satanic" band I was into (well, not really, but fifteen year old me wouldn't know the difference!).
For a long time, it was basically just Deafheaven, Immortal and Misthyrming for black metal-adjacent stuff, as well as the song It Took The Night To Believe by Sunn 0))) which had Wrest from Leviathan on vocals. I didn't get really into raw black metal until 2020, when I started watching Myke C-Town and he was hyping up this band called Lamp of Murmuur. From then on, it was off to the races with raw black metal: I got into Trhä, Paysage D'Hiver and even Darkthrone (who are now one of my favourite bands).
And it was YOU, Wyatt, who helped me to separate art and message from artist and check out more politically incorrect and controversial bands like Nokturnal Mortum, Arghoslent and Peste Noire, all of them fairly recently. I strongly, S-T-R-O-N-G-L-Y disagree and even loathe all three's lyrics, themes and song titles, but I cannot deny their creativity and talent instrumentally, especially Nokturnal Mortum. So... thank you for that, dude!

as a kid I listened to some mainstream stuff, mostly finnish rock and pop, bands like The Rasmus and HIM.
When I was like 10 my friends introduced me to Children of Bodom and Slipknot, I instantly loved their music and pretty much that's all I listened to for a couple years.
When I was 12 I got Guitar Hero 2 and found new metal bands from that game including Lamb of God and All That Remains.
When I was 13 I started playing drums and some of my friends also showed me lots of other metal stuff, including classic Finnish death metal. I got obsessed with At the Gates and new school thrash metal, along with indulging myself with the classics. I felt like I had to hear every classic album ever to educate myself, so I pretty much did nothing but play drums, play rhythm games and download new albums from the internet for a few years. I also got into The Berzerker....which certainly made a very big impact on myself as a teenager just like it did for you.
When I was 15 I got more heavily into progressive rock and metal thanks to bands like Rush, Opeth and Dream Theater.
At 17-18 I was really into grindcore and crust punk, mostly because of playing drums in a grindcore band.
Later from that point I just kept expanding on stuff to listen to, was a really big fan of metalcore from 16 onwards (still am) but nowadays I listen to pretty much everything from gabber to dance pop to funeral doom metal, of course some genres have more stuff I like than others. Rock Band was a big part of getting used to different genres and finding songs I really like.
I'll still always consider myself primarily a metalhead - lately I've been going through a lot of black metal stuff, heavily influenced by your channel. My favorite artist is Carly Rae Jepsen though ☺

For me, I started with mostly metalcore and deathcore as well as some nu-metal. I was pretty sheltered and grew up in a hard-core Christian environment. I got into bands like Underoath, As I Lay Dying, and the Devil Wears Prada. Then one day, a kid from church I was friends with got a mixed cd that had Job For A Cowboy and Suicide Silence on it. I loved them both immediately and it blew my mind how insanely heavy and brutal they were to me at the time.
After being introduced to deathcore by those two bands, I was hungry to hear more bands like that and I really thought it couldn't get any heavier. Until one day my next door neighbor introduced me to his cousin who was really into extreme metal. I asked him what he was listening to and it was Slayer.
We got talking about music and the one song we both knew and loved was Job For A Cowboy- Entombment Of A Machine. He showed me three more songs that blew my mind, Slayer- Disciple, Deicide- Bible Basher, and Gorgoroth- Procreating Satan. It was shocking and a lot to take in at first but I knew deep down I loved it, even though I felt kind if bad listening to it. But eventually I grew to love extreme metal and was always hungry to find the next most extreme bands I could find. Thankfully I got brought down the right path and never turned back!

Here's my book worth of text on my music journey:
I have a few similarities to you. I didn't pay much attention to music in elementary school. My dad played mostly spanish guitar music at home which I didn't care about. However one album played at home that really stood out to me which he referred to as "gypsy music" though I'm not sure if that's even really a genre, was Justin Steczkowska's Aklimja album (really like the song Austeria) and ABBA's greatest hits. Around that time I did ask my parents when in the car to turn on the "spanish music station" (which played reggaeton). It wasn't until 5th grade that I decided to listen to music on my own. Papa roach's last resort caused something in me and I realized I like rock. I loved Disturbed "Down with the sickness" and Mudvayne's "Dig". Listened to the rock station a lot. I too loved three days grace (got to see them live in middle school twice). My first concert was 6th grade with my friend, who introduced me to skillet. Loved that band at that time. I'm so embarrassed to say this but I listened to Hollywood Undead's "swan songs" album on repeat for months on end in 6th grade. Was my favorite band for a while. Avenged Sevenfold was my next favorite band for me in 7th grade. 7th grade that same friend showed me BMTH and I thought it was shit upon first listen, but mesmerized me and I kept going back to it until I eventually liked it. Went to visit my cousins that summer in Europe and my older cousins listened to Metallica/Slayer/Children of Bodom. I really liked this Children of Bodom guitar portions but didn't like the vocals. 8th grade I found Suicide Silence and thought they were the shit and listened to them a lot and sleeping with sirens for some reason. First 2 years of high school I still listened to the same music from 5th grade/middle school. Sophomore year my first introduction to black metal was also gorgoroth (unchain my heart) that I found by chance on youtube. Liked it, checked out the rest of album and thought was boring. Checked out some metal core as well like August burns red, Parkway drive, make them suffer. Then second half of high school I decided to branch out on this deathcore music and listened to bleed from within, impending doom, chelsea grin, drown in sulphur, lorna shore. I was depressed at that time and this was my comfort music. Freshman year of college I gave children of bodom another go and loved i as well as a few other melodeath like bloodshot dawnt. I found more deathcore bands like Analepsy, shades of black, black book of earth, I declare war. I discovered the history of black metal as was very drawn to it(the satanism part, but didn't like some of the well, more controversial aspects). But thought burzum/mayhem/darkthrone were shit. Who likes this noise? I did like some dark funeral though. Listened to more deathcore carnifex, as blood runs black, despised icon, rings of saturn, suffokate. End of college (pandemic) I discovered Slaughter of the soul album. Once I started grad school for some reason deathcore started to sound like shit to me. I would play a song and not even halfway through I was bored. I realized wow maybe I'm over this genre. Normally I can't study with music but one day I wanted to just try it cause I felt like I wasn't being productive anyway. I was like well maybe I'll try something new since I'm bored of all my music and remembered that one black album I kinda liked "the mantle" by Agalloch, and was like maybe I should give black metal another go. For over a year now I've been listening to black metal. At first I kinda of just started with dimmu burgir and Dissection. I thought since I didn't like the norwegian bands maybe I should check out the Polish black metal scene since I heard it was big. I found Horn's Śmierć nie jest granicą and liked it. Listened to other Polish black metal bands like Sznur, Kres, Abesque Cor, Czort, Furia, Zmarłym. After some time I actually came across your video, I think you posted half a year ago, called defending symphonic black metal which I liked some of the recs. Started just finding other black metal bands in my recommended and listen to more new bands than anything repeating. As a kid when I listened to rock/nu metal, I would basically know the whole bands discography, name all albums and songs on albums. Now I just listen to an album all the way through without even checking song titles and next day find new ones because there is just so much out there. Well, I do come back to some albums, Nocturnal Mortum's Voice of Steel is one I play a good amount, but I still like to mostly discover. Recently I gave darkthrone another shot and realized they are good. I only occasionally do death metal. Back then was the same were I like the guitar and vocals put me off. I didn't like Obituary 3 years ago for that reason, but dig them now.

Ah, the simplicity of dad's truck
My music journey started with ACDC's TNT playing in my dad's truck. I still absolutely love ACDC. My dad showed me all of the good stuff, especially Nirvana, my favorite band to this day. My dad also showed me some awful bands. Like my least favorite band ever, FFDP.
I don't know how I got to the filth I listen to now. It started with Cannibal in 7th grade. I heard Hammer Smashed Face first. Then I listened to Immortal years later.
Now here I am now, a shite DSBM artist that hates 85% of all music 😊

I didn't start listening to music on my own until I was in like 6th grade when I got one of the NBA 2K games. I would literally listen to the soundtrack more than play the actual game lol. 6th through 9th grade I listened to nothing other than rap and r&b. Then in my sophomore year, I started branching out into other genres (classic rock, punk, etc.) but once I heard "Purity" by Slipknot, I was hooked on metal. Then a couple weeks later, I heard "Hammer Smashed Face" by Cannibal Corpse and at first I was like "wtf is this?" I had never heard any type of guttural vocals but I was intrigued, so I saved it to a playlist. Cannibal Corpse grew on me and that was kind of my introduction to death metal. Once I realized the vast amount of subgenres of metal there actually are, I started to research all of them. Rap and metal (specifically old school death metal and brutal death metal) are still my favorite genres but I now listen to many other types of music like jazz, ambient, pop, shoegaze, emo, nu-metal, doom, thrash, slam, and so much more. If you read all of this your a goat lol.

What I love about you and your channel is how genuine you are and how you are more of a music fan than simply a metalhead. You respect and appreciate how all of these artists shaped your taste and led you down the rabbit hole. You're not walking around calling people pussies for listening to anything thats not on metal archives. Those types of people are the true posers. Unless you were raised by extreme metalhead parents surely no one was introduced to music listening to Anal Vomit at 6 years old. You got me into a lot of bands that I love now too like Dragged Into Sunlight. I love doomy sounding shit and anything that remotely resembles the guitar tone and song structure of Celtic Frost so they are right up my alley.

For a long time, I had a super basic radio pop music taste, like Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry etc.
With the addition of AC/DC, classical and Lord of the rings music.
Then around the age of 11, I had a major Hip Hop/Rap phase and was even a Rap elitist and started rapping myself (and in front of my friends at school).
Then when I started playing LoL, I listened to the songs under the LoL name like "legends never die". This is not going where you would think, I became obsessed with K/DA "Popstars", so after some time I realized, that I should venture into KPOP and started of with very "normal" artists like Blackpink and Twice.
Being completely captivated by the industry I got to know more and more unusual and experimental songs like: wings - pixy, Simon says - NCT, f(x) red light etc.
Which made me way more open to new genres.
Being a huge ARMY, I then found BTS's cover of come back home, which originally is a song by SeoTaiji&Boys, discovering Seotaiji's entire discography, I also fell in love with his nu-metal album ultramania, and that's what got me into metal lmao.
From that point I got into A TON of different metal sub-genres, basically any you could think of. I started with lesser heavy and a lot of classic metal like iron maiden, Megadeth and so on, quite quickly finding amazing extreme metal bands afterwards.
Now I mainly listen to Kpop and extreme metal(core), like: noisecore, deathcore, slam, death metal, power electronics and of course TRVE KVLT black metal.
I found this channel through the gnaw their tongues reviews, absolutely love all the dread and eschatological scatology!👍

I've never liked to search for heavy or evil stuff. Always been some kind of "nice guy", since I was a kid (actualy, I'm just 18 right now lol). Besides that, I took too long to have any deph on any kind of music. Until i was ~8 years old, I just heard what my family heard - popular brazilian music, with some international pop over here, rap with my older brother, eletro music as well, not many things. And I didn't really liked it or not, it just was there.
And then, my cousin introduced me to something he was into when he was younger (he's just a bit older than my brother), that being power metal. Specificaly, the italian symphonic power metal band Rhapsody of Fire. There were some acoustic Blind Guardian songs, Holy Diver by Dio and some DragonForce, but I was really in love with Rhapsody. I still am, it's such a majestic music. I didn't really understand it, it was just "happy and light _rock"_ to me.
In parallel, I played Guitar Flash (free browser copy of Guitar Hero hah) and watched some dinosaur/Godzilla edited music videos with alt metal (like Jurassic Park with Bodies playing). None of that was really heavy for me, surprisinly. I really likd stuff from Guitar Flash, like Mindflow, Hazy Hamlet, Rexor, Helish Metal (all brazilian, as far as I know), but I didn't had the idea to search for more. Usually, I listened only to Rhapsody and Dragonforce.
With 11, 12 years old, I was into, well, anime rap. There is this brazilian youtuber called Tauz, one of the most famous of his niche in Brazil. Along with that, with 12 years I discovered Dark Souls through a DS3 gameplay series by DMenor11. Since I was more close to that cousin, and he liked power metal and fantasy (he introduced me to Lord of The Rings, power metal and mangá/anime, including Studio Ghibli, so he's the most influential person on my life), I loved Dark Souls just for the fantastic medieval thematic. But I came to find something really great about it: soundtrack. Yeah, Dark Souls made me love lore and start to write some tales of my own, but the soundtrack of From Software games revealed something magical for me. So, I started listening to it on its own. I liked Shadow of The Collossus music, too.
Only when I was 13 and a half years old I really started to _search music._ Once I only had my cousin as "model", and he didn't took me too far in music, I had to perceive that I didn't knew shit about anything; was another gamer youtuber, FunkyBlackCat, who made me see it: he frequently references music and movies, so I started wanting to have that kind of culture knowledge. So I went way back to Beatles, Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chili Peppers (Funky's favorite), Led Zeppelin... With not much advice or lists, just for the names that came across as "important" or "classic".
Funny fact: I tried to listen to Blind Guardian's album Tales From The Twilight World (kinda the last speed metal era album from them), and... It was too heavy for me hahah I stopped right on Traveller In Time, the 1st track. As I said on the beggining: I didn't wanted the haviest of faster, and that was too much of these too aspects for me.
My "first" researched metal band was, what a surprise, Black Sabbath. I was quickly in awe. Not because it was a step above where I was, but just because it is too damn good. Now, I'm not really sure where I went that time, if it was actually the time where I listened better to Blind Guardian, or went to grunge. But I already had listened to some hard rock and some progressive rock, but only a few (Mountain, Rush, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Yes, Jethro Tull).
It took long to me to listen to Metallica and thrash in general (it was just for one girl I liked that said she prefered thrash to power metal), and much longer to get into Iron Maiden; I was 15, already. For thrash, I started to take every well know name that I could get from Wikipedia (my main source at the time hah), starting with Kill' Em All, proceding to Megadeth, then german thrash, and the last of that bunch was Slayer; I was already enjoy, but it was, indeed, a step foward for me, specialy with Sodom, Kreator and Destruction. For Iron Maiden... I don't know, I just acknowledged that I didn't listened for it yet. I was into (REALLY into) Dream Theater way before I ever listened to those above.
Only when I was 16 I came across more extreme music: Opeth. I... Didn't liked it, except when it wasn't extreme metal. But I knew there was great musicality there, in between the growling and beating. Later, I discovered this new band called Crypta (some ex Nervosa members, but I didn't knew Nervosa at the time). Ok, now maybe I can get it, death metal _can_ be cool. It was for a friend I met with 15 yo that I dived more into 1) grunge (his favorite band was Alice In Chains); 2) death metal. But... Only when he was gone, I gave a listen to Death's discography. What a change. I knew that they were good, so I just went through enjoying it more than ever. That opened my mind for extreme metal, something that I really hated back in time, but know I was more curious.
With 16, still, I started dating a girl, and she had a heavier taste than I; and, for a unique time of my life, I was encouraged to "compete" with her. So I started to listen to a bunch of classic death metal (the well known of everyone, like Deicide and Blasphemy, and Xenomorph, for something a bit more underground), as well as black metal in general (not much, I never really liked the style because of its noisy overall sense).
Eventually, I went through heavier and heavier stuff... But always trying to get into other genres, even outside metal; only at the beggining of listening to _rock_ I throught it was cool to only listen to that, but from months ago I've being more into brazilian's classic music (bossa nova, samba, MPB, even a bit of our country music), and I always liked gothic music, specially post-punk (another inheritance from my cousin), and for a while I was into Desireless... My favorite styles still being progressive and power metal, with lots of thrash and death listenings, a lot of love for post-punk, and a great interest on my country's old music, as well as a constant liking for classical music. I also like jazz, but I don't know much about it, except for one band: Casiopea, japanese jazz fusion (quite different from Guthrie Govan, tho); I reeally love them, listened a lot for the last months. Obviously, I went through John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, but only 1 album of them. In resume, my journey have been quite linear in heavyness, and now I'm expading more. I'm constantly listening to new things of any genre, even though I've been repeting more albums and bands. Sorry for the boring narrative, I like to tell my story even being uninteresting lol

Like several others on this list, Guitar Hero was my first exposure to metal when I was a kid. More specifically, Guitar Hero: Metallica introduced me to Metallica. Since I've always been big into gaming, I would always be listening to game soundtracks. One example is that I got into Amon Tobin through Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Highly recommend Amon Tobin if you want some dark and jazzy drum & bass/electronic. However, it would be a long time before I actually dove into metal for real.
When I graduated high school 5 years ago I discovered Bathory and then listened to nothing but Bathory for several months. This is what sent me down the rabbit hole of extreme metal, aka one of the best things to happen to me in forever 🤘. I then got into all the big 2nd wave norwegian bands shortly after, followed by other notable names such as Leviathan for example. I went to a community college in a fairly rural area where the campus was on a steep hill with a view that stretched out very far. Sounds corny as hell I know, but that paired with listening to black metal when driving back home from night classes through the woods and desolate fields was unforgettable (though I don't miss having classes from 5pm to 10pm that semester lol). I've been getting into several other genres recently as well. One genre I've been introduced to by this channel is Neofolk and I love it. Just in general, I've been introduced to so many bands and albums through this channel alone. Thanks Wyatt for getting me into more music whether it be inside or outside metal 🙏

I was first introduced to AC/DC because my dad would play it all the time around the house, I found some other bands like Linkin Park and Three Days Grace, around middle school more or less, I found some emo bands from other people like Escape The Fate or Asking Alexandria, from friends and other people in middle school is also when I found out about Slipknot (All Hope Is Gone album was pretty popular at the time) I first heard it and was completely amazed, at some point during the same year I think one of my friends told me about Cannibal Corpse and then I searched them up online and heard one of their songs and was completely blown away like "wtf is this shit, it's more extreme than anything I've ever heard" and since then up to now it's just been a slow dive into the rabbit hole of extreme music where I've pretty much heard way too many subgenres

Super late to the party, but I'll write this up anyway.
Some of my first experience with heavier music were Rammstein and Linkin Park. I remember seeing the music video for "What I've Done" with Transformers some time in elementary school and feeling quite blown away. I also remember liking Rammstein's Amerika and some other of their songs. However, for some reason this have not evolved much beyond passive listening yet, and I kept listening to other stuff until some point in high school.
Fast forward to that point, which was about 5 or 6 years ago, I somehow discovered Sabaton, which immediately reignated my interest in heavy music, and I went on a rapid binge of their stuff.
Not long after I've discovered Amon Amarth through Sabaton's cover of "Twilight of the Thundergod", which was my first taste of harsh vocals. This lead to me discovering more bands like Arch Enemy, Hypocrisy and Children of Bodom.
Within about the following year or two, until I got out of high school, I've made myself familiar with all the big names in metal, of which Pantera was my favorite. I also got my first taste of thrash through Sodom's M-16, which I saw compared to Sabaton as a better band that also talks about war.
Pantera helped me find groove metal Sepultura, which then led me to death-thrash era Sepultura, which I credit for getting me prepared for non-melodic death metal. Around late 2019 when I was starting college, I discovered one of my all time favorite bands, Bolt Thrower, also through searching for more war themed bands. I listened to some songs from Those Once Loyal and felt completely blown away by how great it was.
Within another year I got into bands like Death, Obituary, Behemoth, Vader or Cannibal Corpse, and so death metal became my favorite genre and continues to be until today. I've dipped into black metal from time to time but it's still largely unexplored territory for me.

I grew up from day 1 almost exclusively on typical Heavy Metal, Glam Metal and plenty of the type of Blues Rock you'd find your dad blasting in an old Chevy, so I was already well cemented within music way before I properly got into Metal and like knew exactly the ins and outs so to speak.
I remember being told how much I loved "The Summer of 69" by Bryan Adams, and if they skipped it I would be whaling like a bitch. So I already fell in love with music way back when I was still really young.
Though the absolute first exposure to heavier music is pretty obvious because my mom likes Iron Maiden so I heard them some growing up, but I guess the first band I heard that was like "different" for me was when I saw Enter Sandman on VH1 wayyy back in the day. I didn't really re-visit it too much after hearing it the first time but I remember specifically the music video struck a chord with me.
After that it was pretty much still 90% Blues Rock or whatever you wanna call it. Up until Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock (this will also be a big part later of how I got into it all) came out and I got it on the Wii at my mom's house. I played through it all and heard all kinds of Music from The Offspring to Arch Enemy to Megadeth and I always remember that the heavier or well "harder" to play songs always had me coming back to play them.
I wasn't yet going out of my way to listen to Metal in my free time however, just felt myself being dragged to it a lot whenever I played Guitar Hero. However after a year or two it was back to Blues Rock again..
Up until late 2015, when Guitar Hero: Live came out. I got it from my mom and instantly fell in love with that game and a decent amount of the music in it. But it wasn't until the first time I played Nightmare by Avenged Sevenfold on that game that I really was like "Wait woah, this feels different I gotta check this out"
It lead to me getting SUPER into that band, along with Trivium, Alter Bridge, Black Veil Brides and more similar stuff but I started also getting into actually like sitting down and just listening to heavier stuff which for me at the time was the more "darker" sounding Metalcore like Beartooth's "I Have A Problem" and Atreyu's "So Others May Live" and I remember those two specifically feeling like they had a certain type of energy to them that for some reason just really made me interested.
So I pretty much went on a Metalcore and Heavy Metal frenzy with all the typical bands and some Deathcore along the way up until like 2017 when I was thrown straight into the gutter with Slam Metal's meme gods "Xavleg- etc etc" and their song "Bone Saw" I believe it's called and it was definitely weird to me at first like I wasn't disgusted or opposed but I was definitely questioning what I was hearing.
Then stuff like Ingested's "Skinned And Fucked" came into my peripheral and I enjoyed it some, but it wasn't until Dehumanizing Itatrain Worship's "Brutal Rush" that I was like "Wow, that's brutal" and it just flung me into this unnecessary need for heavier and heavier music up until the point where the music I was unironically loving sounded like the guitars were chugging 3 chords on a 20$ amp and the vocals were recorded on one of those kids microphones like really just low quality shitpost tier music, but it attracted me.
The appeal I found was because it felt different to me at the time, it felt like someone experimenting beyond what is normally considered "good music" and almost purposely avoiding making "good music", so I loved the goofy nature of it, and I still honestly could listen to it no problem whatsoever to this day.
But then a while of music enjoying passes and as you get older, you tend to "grow up" a bit. So I remember in 2018 I started getting into stuff like Anaal Nathrakh, Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom. Like more "professional" heavy music I guess I could call it.
And from there I kind of just stopped caring for heaviness in terms of wanting heavier and heavier stuff, and instead wanting well written songs. At least well written to my ears, and those bands had that to offer. However that also lead me to get into Black Metal and such with Watain being probably the BIGGEST one for me personally. Because it's dark, but well crafted music.
It would come all together up until about today where my absolute favorite genre would very soon after Watain and Black Metal to instead be Death Metal, but now with bands like: Morbid Angel, Nile, Dying Fetus and so on. Those are probably some of the most important bands to me now. Especially Morbid Angel, they pretty much re-shaped my whole standards for music and gave me a new appreciation for well crafted art especially with Trey's ever so chaotic but controlled solos and is very clever riffs.
So yeah, long ass wall of text but to sum it up it's basically:
"I've always enjoyed having Metal around me, but never listened to it on my own until 2016".

My musical journey was shaped largely by TV and video games. Music Choice, Teenick, MTV, etc. And I am not proud of it at all! I am forever ashamed of the fact that I found The All-American Rejects, Good Charlotte, and Green Day through Kidz Bop! Hell, I first heard Blink-182 on a trailer for Clockstoppers (some Nickelodeon movie that came out in '02). A lot of the music I found in video games I didn't really get into until years after.
As for how I got into metal, I saw a lot of people at my high school wearing Asking Alexandria T-shirts. I also remembered Reverse This Curse by Escape the Fate from some game that I'm too embarrassed to say; a withered past and blurry future indeed.
It took me being upset about some stupid shit to really get into heavy music. I'm 24 and am mad that I only recently discovered bands like Nonpoint and got into black metal!
What I wish my musical journey had been:
I was 6 going on 7. I would've had some semblance of awareness of my being as a black autistic kid from the hood. I would've been raised mainly on metal and rap (I'm from the south so I would've listened to a lot of T6M and Lil Wayne) Where would I've found it? Wikipedia, UA-cam, Myspace. Knowing my parents, most but not all of my gateway bands would have to have some religious sounding names. My gateway rock band would've been Genesis. I do say this because I did go through something of a prog phase a couple years ago.
Once I did turn 7, I'd start listening to metal. I'd long thought my gateway would've been either Exodus or Testament, or even modern bands like Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, or Underoath. But my gateway metal band just as easily could've been Black Sabbath
Because my instrument of choice is keyboard/synth, I'm including industrial; Ministry would've been my gateway industrial band, though Godflesh could've been a close second
Around age 9, I'd decided that I want to expand my boundaries and listen to post-punk/indie; The Jesus and Mary Chain without a shadow of a doubt would've been my gateway into that
I don't consider myself a pop-punkhead anymore, but my gateway band if not Green Day or MxPx would've either been Fall Out Boy or Yellowcard

Wow, this is good stuff Wyatt. I just turned 48, maybe same age as your dad? Anyway, grewing up in the 80s I listened to what was on radio. Bruce Spingsteen, INXS, Hall and Oats, Tom Petty and the like. Then around 8th grade I discovered "KROQ Music" - KROQ being a popular radio station in southern California that played New Wave. That's when I discovered Depeche Mode, The Cure, the list goes on. Then 1988 happened, when Metallica's One debuted on MTV. I remember it being a BIG DEAL at the time, Metallica releasing their first music video so MTV hyped the shit out of it. I watched MTV a lot at the time, so I had to check this out. I heard of the name Metallica through classmates so was very curious. I watched at the exact moment the video debuted, the full unedited one. Jesus Fucking Christ. That was my watershed moment. And then I discovered another radio station in southern California - KNAC. That played only metal. I ate it all up. On Mondays they had "Mandatory Metallica", an hour of nothing of Metallica. On another night, late night, an hour dedicated to death metal. Oh man. I discovered Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Sepultura, everyone. I was eating it all up. It was pretty cool to experience the 90s because, that was the best decade of metal IMHO. I remember Pantera blowing up. Grunge, nu-metal, it was all so good to me. I remember when Korn's Blind coming on the radio for the first time and being floored. I would literally go to every metal show I could in Hollywood. I can say I saw Metallica when tickets were $20. Every show was like 20 bucks! Crazy. I met James and Lars when KNAC went off the air for the last time because they sold out to a Mexican station. Shit... I met lots of metal bands and even had a few people at my house. I would discover artists then immediately go discover their back catalog. The one thing I like about metal is going down the rabbit hole and discovering more things. I then developed a like for post metal, bands like ISIS. Then discovered black metal (partially, thanks to you.) Reality I am a metalhead at heart but I just like heavy-adjacent/dark/weird stuff. Hell I had trance/EDM phase in the 2000s and its been fun re-listening that stuff. And I am still discovering new music, recently discovered Music/Actrix, amazing. Another great/werid band is Xiu Xiu. I can go on! My most prized vinyl is a signed copy of Pantera's Far Beyond Driven (the alternate cover, IYKYK). Actually have met Dime and Vinny twice. Fucking nice guys. Thank you for the trip down memory lane, I can keep going but I'll stop now. I'll save my Korn story for another day LOL. For the record - Depeche Mode is my favorite band,

Personally, I started getting into extreme metal around freshman year of high school. Haven't looked back since. But of course I've been very willing to explore all sorts of music, since listening to the same sort of stuff can get a tad monotonous.

Around middle school/jr high I got into emo/screamo/post-hardcore (with a tad of nu-metal and metalcore) stuff like SWS, PTV, MCR - all entry level bands (still love them all) but also into a lot of indie pop stuff that I can't stand anymore
And then I got to highschool and it went all downhill from there...It started with a huge metalcore phase...then I wanted heavier and heavier and...Now I'm super into prog metal, deathcore, death metal etc...mostly deathcore, melodeath, hardcore, phc and prog though with the occasional black metal and power metal bands.
The majority of my music taste is 1990's - 2010's
    Early 2000's is where it's at :)
