I didn't know he is from Belgium. I'm German and I was in Australia in 2006 for a whole year...I heard Triple J Radio at work in Brisbane...I was always happy when they played Hearts a mess.
Loved the unique sound of this guy. I got the album back then. Gotta dig it out again! Great music. Rare quality if you'd ask me.

Low electronic beeping is from a Depeche Mode song called Blasphemous Rumors. I recognize that from anywhere!

Live from day to the next day
Try to satisfy the cravings before they
    Consume you
    Colours are brighter
    The world can excite you
    When you're under its spell
    You can tell
    All too well
That without it life would be hell
And time is passing you by
It marks no moment of your life
When you submit yourself to be numb
    The fear disappears
    And everything seems clear
When the emptiness is upon you
It fills you up like a balloon
    And you float
High up over the real world
    And think of when
You were a little girl again
    Where would you go, baby?
    What could you do?
    Didn't you hear, baby?
    Nothing is sure but uncertainty
You can feel the hunger inside you
But the longing will no longer guide you onwards
    Sinking into the floorboards
Where the rats eat at your will
    And do it until
    Your belly aches
And your soul will not be still
    Wrench yourself from your demons
For far too long you've believed them
When they told you you were weak
Take a step in the tunnel
With the light 'round the bend
    In the end
You can start to make amends
Who knows where you'll go, baby
    So much you could do!
    Haven't you heard, baby?
    All will be well
    If you want it to

  • @TheIamgodfool

this music is beautiful... his music depicts his own set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, gotye perfectly conveys his complex ideas pent inside his mind as something that we can all understand in our own way. You could ignorantly step away from this music because your fiendish ego haunts you, but you simply would not want to deprive yourself of an experience

I am happy that Somebody that I Used to Know became extremely popular. If it wasn't for that song, I never would've gotten into Gotye. I know that people want to be "hipsters" about it but living in America makes finding good music so difficult that you just tolerate the bad. I hope Gotye and Kimbra become more popular in the U.S so I can finally use my radio again.

    Wally singing with Jess McAvoy

I completely agree with you, If it wasn't for that one song though I would not have known Gotye, but it opened my ears to the rest of his music, I now own all of his albums because I like all of his music. I wish I knew it before Somebody That I Use To Know hit the charts, I love that song so much as well as his others. No shame in that.

Story time! Several months ago, I found Eyes Wide Open on UA-cam and fell in love with it. Then I found Hearts a mess and listened to it. Then I found several of his other songs, and I felt like I'd stumbled upon my new favorite artist, and it was awesome. Then the next day I heard Somebody I used to know on the radio, and kind of liked it too, and then found out it was Gotye. So, I can rightfully say that I knew of him before that one hit everyone knows about. :)

Gotye isn't a band, and Gotye isn't a group. He is a single person (Wally de Backer) and although he sometimes uses other musicians for things he can't person himself, he is a solo artist. Self-produced.

"Not unlike us Aussies to claim him for ourselves"..... let's see, moved here when he was two years old and lived here all his life, studied here, music was born in the Melbourne music scene. I don't think it's fair to imply that he's not really Australian or that we are unjustly claiming him as an Australian artist
