You are not the only one. I think in 2021 this particular sentence is so relatable. As we become more and more connected in truth we are becoming more and more disconnected. I really miss a deep connection sometimes.
I noticed as time goes on, it’s harder to connect with people. So many have become so closed off and disinterested to even keeping a conversation. i miss sharing something with someone else

Something that really gets to me is the "I'm desperate to connect" line. You can find so many people to be with in the world, but it's remarkable how hard it is to find someone you can connect with.

I really wish some of Gotye's other stuff had been played on the radio along with (or instead of) "Somebody I Used to Know". Because that one had never really struck me, I hadn't bothered to look him up until a few days ago, when I heard "Eyes Wide Open". Now that I've checked him out, I feel that he's terribly underrated.
I don't know if underrated is the right word. I think it's a combination of things such as poor promotion considering how big he got, also combined with the fact that he doesn't appear to enjoy getting too much publicity and dipped out of the public eye for a more behind the scenes role in the music industry.
3:54 that part always got me. It's like that final plea, that burst of emotion and energy to try to make it work, when you already know it's over, and you're empty and exhausted, but have to give it that one last push to say you did all you can
I accidentally clicked on this video and was like WTF. Never heard of this guy or the song. Long story short, that mis-click just changed my life. Holy shit. What a revelation. I'm absolutely obsessed.....replayed like five times!!! Amazing. A true artist. I just love him.
Gotye is my favorite singer of all times😁 im mechanic i can fix his car for free for ex i can do the timming as a discount only if he can sing a song for me live😂
I clicked this in 2020 after thinking I hadn't heard any other Gotye songs other than Somebody I Used to Know, but I got this really weird feeling, and i know I've seen this before. Freaked me out, but I'm glad I found this masterpiece again.
@@binkiebunnie Nah, mate. I've seen this video before somewhere. When my mom and I lived in Mexico, we'd go to a pizzeria for a treat sometimes and they played MTV on their TV a lot. You know, when that channel used to play music videos? And I think that might've been where. Gnarly tho.

I love the song, but let's talk about the video: Gotye starts out resting on what is very clearly Earth's moon. Then he drops down onto what looks like a devastated Earth. Its skies are darkened to night. The only things we see on the surface of the planet are a few destroyed buildings. He is followed by a mechanical spider weaving a dark shadow. As he walks, he holds a megaphone up to his lips, calling out a message. He walks through a formation of soldiers forcibly marching a creature with a tank of water on its back, a tear in its eye and moving on trembling crutches. The last of the clean water. It leaves the soldiers to join Gotye. As the trio approach a collapsed home, three little spirits precede it and jump into the beak of a seemingly dead crane that is laden down with a broken fishing shack, a fishing line, and a stork's baby bundle. It has a Radioactive sign on its side, and its eyes have been bound shut. When the little spirits jump into its beak, it rises and joins the group. They continue to traverse the wasteland, the spider walking backwards as it watches the ever-growing shadow that it weaves, cover the land. They pass through the burned remains of a forest, where the eyes of what used to live there watch them. A logger with an axe in its hand and laden down with a cargo of felled trees, joins them. "You just threw away the key." Ahead, the only seemingly living things are the still-polluting factories and an oil refinery, still belching out their poisons long after life has left the planet; in the foreground a crane with a wrecking ball mindlessly demolishes what's left of the apartment buildings; it's made for destruction and is driven to destroy until everything is gone. As the group passes it, it looks up from its mission, sees them, looks over the buildings it has been wrecking, and leaves its work to join them. As they leave that area, the dirty glare of the factory lights and the oil refinery's gas flare gleam sickenly in the distance. Above, to the left, the light of a tiny craft shoots up and out to escape through a thinner patch of sky where sunlight struggles to shine through weakly. It is not night after all; the sun has been blotted out by the thick cloud of pollution. They stop by the sea's edge. A lonely sea monster with the head of a fish rows in on the last remaining piece of sea ice, which is rapidly melting. The sea monster joins the exodus as the spider gently pulls a blanket of shadow across the planet - it is almost completely covered now. They pass through a cemetery where the Big Five (Exxon, Chevron, Shell, BP and TotalEnergies) finally grieve and wring their hands while surrounded by the gravestones of the protesters that were killed for raising the alarm. A tortured spirit rises from the ground, his mouth bound and silenced. He has a flower on his head and twisted around his body is the spirit of the thing he died trying to protect: life. With a backward glance back at the tycoons, he too joins the parade. They reach the place Gotye first landed when he jumped down from the moon, and the spider finishes pulling the funeral shroud over the Earth. The members of the little parade climb each other up past the reach of gravity, and float into space. Farewell to the home we destroyed and lost. Is it a kind of suicide? The song is sad but the _video_ is so full of grief.
I could be wrong but this is my theory. The themes represent man, war, homeless, deforestation, polution, global warming and death. I thought the spider meant the end of the earth. Mankind is leading the charge. He has those no noise ear muffs because his hearts a mess and can't admit to it, he doesn't want to hear it. In the end you can't live like this. Literally... Look at the water at 3:51 the earth becomes barron, and there's nothing left.
I'm seeing this for the first time (and hearing) I can see all these references, like obviously The Police and Pink Floyd, .... Brilliant!!! In lock down again Auckland, trying out new true wireless earbuds but still not enuff BASS.!

He finds someone to love so he takes a dive into her heart and finds her and everything negative, lonely, depression, useless, fear, unhappy, and sad, he wants to make them seem small and her bigger than she really is, he tries as hard as he can but no matter how hard he tries she just gets smaller and smaller and everything negative surrounds her, he eventually gives up in the end and finds a way out of her heart and leaves because he doesn't want to waste his love on someone who won't let him in and makes him depressed that he cant do anything to make her happy like she once was.

It feels like this song sums up the human condition of losing a piece of your heart over lost love until you can lose no more… thanks Gotye for this timeless masterpiece!!
Idk why but there’s something so nostalgic about how dark and unusual this song is, yet something so oddly familiar, it’s as if we’ve experienced something similar to this in a dream, or at least I have, i mean, probably
The melody of the chorus was borrowed by Craig Armstrong for The Great Gatsby, when Daisy is talking about how she wishes that her daughter grows up a fool. Perhaps it reminds you of that, or perhaps it's just a really nostalgia-inducing song and that's why Armstrong picked it.
And CrippledArms I never saw Mirror Mask but I have heard about it and saw a few scenes like that scene where the girl is in her bedroom and she thinks she’s finally back safe at home but then she opens the door and the troll things are all outside and she finds out it’s all just an illusion. 👁👄👁
It pisses me off to know that a song I love so much has existed for 7 years without my knowing. Just makes me wonder what else I would love is out there that I haven't discovered yet
You're just in time. Listen to all of his albums in their entirety. I feel bad for those who only know *Somebody That I Used To Know* Don't get me wrong. It's still a great song. But all of his songs are just as great, if not greater. Heart's A Mess, Easy Way Out, and Bronte are three of my favorite Gotye songs. I just hope he makes another album.
This song lives in my head rent free. It makes my heart ache and my brain light up with so many emotions and thoughts. When gotye said he's an ARTist, he was NOT joking. Forever in love with this whole record. Thanks Gotye, for inspiring a generation of artists. love u. rant over. bye.
People who have a different taste in music disliked this, I have no idea why they couldn't have just chosen a song they liked instead of having to feel like they have to make their selves known.
I was listening to "Somebody I Used To Know" because it was one of those few songs that I automatically liked from the first listen and I've loved it for years. Figured I'd give some of Gotye's other stuff a chance. Don't regret it one bit.
Kaehyon I mean I get why it frustrates him I think every or almost every one hit wonder is frustrated when it comes to music. Only being known for one song must suck.
This song could be used as an allegory for modern times. With everyone so connected we've never been farther apart. Some of us just want some company to ride out the chaos with.
People think this is weird and strange, they say it like it's a bad thing. This song feels so good, so painfully good like if you were to have a piece of glass stuck in your heart, but then this song cuts up a part removing the glass from your body.
This isn't kind. He said, this chick is a monster . But he's desperate even if it means he gets abused. And she wont stop lying and it makes no sense. That's sad. Who could live like that, or around that? He's right. Why waste his love.
My art teacher showed this to my class four years ago as an example of a creative music video...this is my first time finding this since then, I completely forgot about it!
@@hhhhhhhjj4226 theres a lot of meanings to it but sometimes I like to think of it as something to do with the Earth and its people. Gas Mask is war, Pelican is homeless, Lumberjack is deforestation, Wrecking Ball is unnecessary destruction, Lizard is ice caps melting and the Skeleton is death. And Gotye with the headphones in is the Humans obliviousness to the things happening
This is probably one of my all time favourite songs lyrically. The lyrics are all very easy to understand, no pretentious overused metaphors, and still they come across very poetic. The lyrics seem so congruent, it could easily have been a (quite long i'll admit) monologue from one person to another. I love the song as a whole, ofc, but the lyrics get to me every time i come by to listen. I'm glad there's music like this out there!
I served as a recon in the DMZ in South Korea. I was in the DMZ at night. This song came from a loudspeaker heading to North Korea. This memory lingers strongly.
This was a huge part of my childhood, I have ADHD and my father sat with me and watched this very video with me to calm me down... Thanks Gotye for the memories
i hate myself for only discovering this gem 14 years later; gotye is a fabulous musician. This hasn't aged one bit which is very telling of this man's talent
I believe this music video shows us all of the worlds problems. The one with the crutches and gas mask represents war and nuclear destruction. The seagull with shelter on its back represents homelessness and homeless shelters. The one with the axe represents all of the trees getting cut down to serve our own purposes. The wrecking ball one represents the destruction of buildings or businesses. The dragon-like being in the middle of the water represents global warming because of that little chunk of ice it is sitting on. The skeleton represents death. Gotye represents the people ignoring these problems hence the headphones canceling it all out. The spider dragging the darkness over the world represents the starting of another day. Everything that floats up into the sky represents the people putting all of the worlds problems aside or ignoring them. I know it sounds stupid, but that's how I think...
Itz K3N The lyrics really connect with this meaning, or at least I think so. For example, hearts a mess is him trying to tell them that the world is dying, and you wont admit to it is the peope who ignore the problems. It makes no sense is him talking about the politicians who make no sense when denying the issues. You cant live like this is referring to how if we continue our current ways the earth will die.
What's sad about this is the fact that this video was created 10 years ago, and we still sit around and continue to do nothing 10 years later. Huh your comment made me think about the earth I live on.
To add on " The one with the crutches and gas mask " also represents short water as the is a water supply which could mean it is needed so that may be why he / she / it has it and it / she / he may have it for the homeless but well he doesn't look like he has a good travel / trip.
Here’s my interpretation: I think the whole song is about the deterioration of the Earth because of the things humans are doing. The thing on stilts represents the side effects of war. The pelican represents poverty. The monster with the logs represents deforestation. The wrecking ball represents the large cities and the pollution they cause. The lizard on the ice represents the suffering of animals. The skeleton represents death. The spider represents the darkness and eventual death of everything that follows. And the guy at the front represents the people that ignore all these problems and continue with their lives.
We’ll, for me this was my dating song....we were both going through divorces. 10yrs later we have two kids one survived a surgery 3 days into her life with a death sentence for a congenial diagnoses. She’s a happy 6 year old. Praise the Lord. And we are still going strong.

Many of his songs were played on Australian radio stations, just didn't have as much luck outside of the country until a certain song
im from australia, hearts a mess was 1st song I heard
One day he'll come back to us
he is a band called the basics, check their yt channel

He doesn't need to come back because his music will always be here.
3:54 that part always got me. It's like that final plea, that burst of emotion and energy to try to make it work, when you already know it's over, and you're empty and exhausted, but have to give it that one last push to say you did all you can
Too accurate 😕
This is exactly how I've felt about that part as well...that feeling behind the last push... this whole song is just perfection

No you see, he was just trying to connect to a tech support guy on the phone. He goes into detail in Thanks For Your Time.
I clicked this in 2020 after thinking I hadn't heard any other Gotye songs other than Somebody I Used to Know, but I got this really weird feeling, and i know I've seen this before. Freaked me out, but I'm glad I found this masterpiece again.
This song is on the Great Gatsby Soundtrack album . Perhaps you heard it there?
@@binkiebunnie Nah, mate. I've seen this video before somewhere. When my mom and I lived in Mexico, we'd go to a pizzeria for a treat sometimes and they played MTV on their TV a lot. You know, when that channel used to play music videos? And I think that might've been where. Gnarly tho.
Pun Queen I think I saw this when I was like 8

He's got a band called Basics ~
My interpretation is that it's about a failing relationship. The lyrics seem to suggest this. Each of the creatures that follow him are the negative emotions piling on as he's stuck in a relationship that can't be saved. The creature on crutches is hurt, the one with the bundle on the stick is feeling like you don't belong (don't have a home), the crying creature in the woods is sadness, the wrecking ball is anger, the snake on the ice is isolation, the skeleton is grief, and all of them are followed by the spider that is taking away the light on the planet they inhabit. Also, note that Gotye's creature is wearing headphones and carrying a megaphone. I take this to represent that the people involved are shouting, but not listening to what's being said. In the end, all the emotions pile on, until the only solution is to let go entirely, shown by the scattering into space.
Omg that's actually what I was thinking as well
wow thats a really interesting thought
Now knowing this the song has gotten a lot sadder for me.
Beautiful interpretation
i love your thinking behind it!
I love the song, but let's talk about the video:
Gotye starts out resting on what is very clearly Earth's moon.
"You just threw away the key."
Ahead, the only seemingly living things are the still-polluting factories and an oil refinery, still belching out their poisons long after life has left the planet; in the foreground a crane with a wrecking ball mindlessly demolishes what's left of the apartment buildings; it's made for destruction and is driven to destroy until everything is gone.
The song is sad but the _video_ is so full of grief.
there’s nothing left to be done but to give up. it’s inevitable, just like it appears to be with his unreachable muse

The music video gives super Mirror Mask vibes if you’ve seen that! I get all the nostalgia from that!
JGR I never saw the great gatsby Is it a musical?
And CrippledArms I never saw Mirror Mask but I have heard about it and saw a few scenes like that scene where the girl is in her bedroom and she thinks she’s finally back safe at home but then she opens the door and the troll things are all outside and she finds out it’s all just an illusion. 👁👄👁
Detective Pikachu it also reminds me of the Ruby Gloom intro!

This song could be used as an allegory for modern times. With everyone so connected we've never been farther apart. Some of us just want some company to ride out the chaos with.

I'm glad there's music like this out there!

i hate myself for only discovering this gem 14 years later;
gotye is a fabulous musician. This hasn't aged one bit which is very telling of this man's talent
Man i’m as old as this song, I discovered this when I was 8 or so
I believe this music video shows us all of the worlds problems.
Sounds like you are describing the book of Revelation.
And dose doggos at the start probably are the soldiers. the world is like this though.
Here’s my interpretation:
I think the whole song is about the deterioration of the Earth because of the things humans are doing.
Thats deep man
Deep but true

I remember those days, Imma tell you something, stay with the right people and listen to good music. Do this and you will lead a very full and exciting life
Gotye really hits us hard with his voice when he adds so much emotion to the "But I'm desperate to connect!" part, we can literally feel the pure dread within that lyric.
I agree
Wow, this song just filled a gap I didn’t realize had been there for 16 years!
"Let me occupy your mind as you do Mine..." Deep
Not really bro
@@ManMan-cc2gf you've obviously never been in love
@@maggiwells5430 lol are you 14 ?
;0) Lol
It's a really good line, it's relatable, it's impactful, but it's not "deep". It's more obvious than deep
I love this song! I found it because it's part of The Great Gatsby soundtrack and I had no idea that it was so "old".
***** saw the movie and found it too. Lol such a good movie.
Dray F. Yeah, for sure! :)
***** yea it was in gossip girl lol
Though the movie is good, the book is way better.
ill have to look into it, youre the second person to tell me so.
Come on Gotye, I think is time for you to come back.
Hes in a band named the basics now
this version should be available at music platforms
Pick apart
The pieces of your heart
And let me peer inside
Let me in
Where only your thoughts have been
Let me occupy your mind
As you do mine
Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
You can't live like this
You have lost
(Too much love)
To fear, doubt and distrust
(It's not enough)
You just threw away the key
To your heart
You don't get burned
('Cause nothing gets through)
It makes it easier
(Easier on you)
But that much more difficult for me
To make you see…
Love ain't fair
So there you are
My love
Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this
Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you can't live like this
Love ain't safe
You won't get hurt if you stay chaste
So you can wait
But I don't wanna waste my love
You literally just copied the description lol
anyone else still in love with song!?!?
