Same here, the beats suppose to make me happy as I remember playing this old PS2 game called Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc but the lyrics make me sad and cry.
When my heart was truly broken, I found this song, and felt like it was one of the few that had the right frequency to reach deep down when grief happens
I feel like this song is an internal dialogue between me and myself. One part of me is telling myself that I can't live like this and the other wants to shut everyone and everything out to stay safe. The latter one always wins
That's a perfect way to describe it. I too can feel this way. But I've gotten better at winning over the anxious half of me. I will take the risk. Cautiously, yes, but it's better for me than not trying at all.
That final belting out of “connect,” actually kind of hurt me. It was so poignant and expressed such bitter frustration, to the point of feeling hopelessly melancholy rather than angry.
Yeah the song just sounds cold and dark. Like you are in a forest at night, not knowing where you are, a crescent moon, and the moons light being the only thing guiding you.
Pick apart The pieces of your heart And let me peer inside Let me in Where only your thoughts have been Let me occupy your mind As you do mine You have lost Too much love To fear, doubt and distrust Its not enough You just threw away the key To your heart You don't get burned 'Cause nothing gets through It makes it easier Easier on you But that much more difficult for me To make you see Love ain't fair So there you are My love Your heart's a mess You won't admit to it It makes no sense But I'm desperate to connect And you, you can't live like this Your heart's a mess You won't admit to it It makes no sense But I'm desperate to connect And you, you can't live like this Your heart's a mess You won't admit to it It makes no sense But I'm desperate to connect And you can't live like this Love ain't safe You won't get hurt if you stay chaste So you can wait But I don't wanna waste my love
This in my opinion is the best Gotye song. The soundscape is so cool, the distortions, the flutes, the shimmer, the whole percussiveness.... it's so different. I love this And then the climax around the middle of the song. The drums sound kind of like a marching band but not as harsh.... amazing work
This is like 1000x better than the music video version, which is already a pretty damn good song. Hearing it how it was intended to be written makes it so damn powerful. Easily one of Gotye's masterpieces.
Took a job in another country and was leaving my partner when this song was still recent. Played the album on loop as I packed my bags crying by myself. Never been that way before or after, it still resonates all these years after.
After having been a "Somebody that I used to know" fan boy all along, to discover this masterpiece which came out like 6 yrs from the former!! From 2006 and timeless!
I'v hears thousands songs, I liked the greatest hits.. pink floyd jimi hendix deep purple gun n roses mono x-japan sigur ros dire straits prince and all outstanding singers in the world... but, i never heard a song with this limit of perfection in my life.. you reach a moment when you relize that the best thing ever happened to you in ur life was a song named Heart A Mess! by Gotye! language can't describe nothing.
a masterpiece, one of its kind. powerful, emotional and never getting old. I listened to this song almost 20 years ago and from time to time I have been craving it. I put my headphones on and forget the world for six minutes. Vocal, instrumentation, production everything is brilliant and one of the songs that comes to my mind when I think about what is the best song ever written.
This is a masterpiece of art, music, melody and lyrics. It transponds me to another place in such a cozy and intense way even after a decade has passed.
This is not "hit material" unlike Somebody that i used to know. But this is still more listened than most of Gotye's songs (thanks to the movie this was in)
Who else was led here by The Great Gatsby ,don't even usually watch the whole credits, but thanks to the everyday distractions of Facebook, I heard this songs faint sweet melody in the background ^-^
Me too! I heard this song about seven years ago but then it fell completely of the radar to me, yesterday I saw Gatsby and now I can't stop from listening.
I really like his songs where he putted in some emotional like this song & Eyes wide open. In Eyes wide open he found sounds to put into the song. And he went to a place where he felt happy and lucky. Don't know how it is with Hearts a mess but it sounds kinda emotinal to me and that's what I like about those two songs :) And he's got a great voice ofc ;) So more of this songs would actually be perfect! Keep on making music! :D X from the Netherlands :)
Yeees I remember being like 17 or 18, I'm 34 now. I was driving in moms car to drop off a package at ups. I remember I was listening to this song and the playlist I had. I remember the way the sky was gray with rain. I remember the green trees and the wet highway. And the red car lights ahead of me... I was at peace just listening to this song, just in the moment. A happy teenager.. yes I had my mental health and past life memories plaqued me but right then I was happy smelling the rain, vibing to this and driving.. :) and now years later with so many more experiences and met people and made memories.. and becoming Hindu,, I sit here smoking Ganja and found this song again. And I am brought back to that time :) A lot of things brought me here.. a lot of it I did not think I would make it through.. But I am at peace now :) 😊 and now I will vibe to this song High as an adult, when I used to vibe to it sober as a teen lol and just drift into the other reality I see.. The video tripped me out as teen so I'ma go watch it now on smokes lol XD😂😂🎉
I feel like I'm swaying in the breeze, enjoying a mojito on a deserted beach with palm trees and gentle waves lapping back and forth on the golden sand. Peaceful, gentle and bubbly vibes I'm getting of this. Hence why it fits with Hannibal NBC TV series.
I heard it on Spotify suffle and I'm so glad i did. It would have been a biggest loss for me if I have found it later. So i can listen this more, while I'm on earth.
My heart was broken too! When I listened to this, I would just leave it on repeat. It's my favourite song but its such a bummer its linked to something so traumatic. What a bummer
This is driving me crazy. This song REALLY reminds me of something, especially that throbbing noise in the background, but I have no idea what it is. Aargh.
When you love a girl who is your best friend so much, but she's still mourning her old, long gone relationship. You've expressed your love to her, always by her side, cheered her up all the time, but nothing has changed. Time passed, now you can't wait for her response anymore, you have to move on and this song is the final note for her. I lived in this before...
Unpopular opinion: this is Gotye’s best song
Gotye has some amazing music which has gone undiscovered for the most part.
this is definitely my fav
This is his best song
*state of the art*
I agree
I need a hug
+Calvin *hug* there ya go
Same here, the beats suppose to make me happy as I remember playing this old PS2 game called Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc but the lyrics make me sad and cry.
you got a free hug
*Hugs*

Virtual hug from the future ❤️also a warm cup of tea☕
This song refuses to lose it's power to this day. So hypnotic, so sensual, and the lyrics so tragic. A masterwork.
absolutely!
Absolutely amazing song.. such a Vibe
to this day✨
It’s sad that Heart’s a Mess isn’t popular as Somebody That I Used to Know
When my heart was truly broken, I found this song, and felt like it was one of the few that had the right frequency to reach deep down when grief happens
you never grieved
I think of it as the singer is talking about the listener.
You and me both.
Nearly 20 years later and this song still hits like a damn freight train. Goosebumps all over. Pure magic.
I feel like this song is an internal dialogue between me and myself. One part of me is telling myself that I can't live like this and the other wants to shut everyone and everything out to stay safe. The latter one always wins
For me, this is the most relatable comment regarding this song. It's a dialogue between the two halves of me...
That's a perfect way to describe it. I too can feel this way. But I've gotten better at winning over the anxious half of me. I will take the risk. Cautiously, yes, but it's better for me than not trying at all.
Sounds like Pink Floyd “The Wall”
Gotye is such an underrated artist and singer...his voice is haunting and beautiful
That final belting out of “connect,” actually kind of hurt me. It was so poignant and expressed such bitter frustration, to the point of feeling hopelessly melancholy rather than angry.
Roman Ruiz man excellent description
His use of range to tell the story is fantastic.
A lost art
Absolutely, I love it🙌
desperate
to connect
it sounds like there's so much pain in his voice when he sings "but i'm desperate to *connect"* 3:10 and it makes me shiver
spook I know, that’s the part that made me absolutely fall in love with this song the first time I heard it.
And in continuation when he sings ooooooh, ooooooh is great, very good song!
@J damn that sucks
@@richtofen4888 Me too!!
@@kristinakrstanovic6797 It really builds the emotion doesn't it!!
This is less a song and more an aural book/film. There is so much density in the sound and lyrics, I feel like I'm walking through a thick forest.
I agree! It made me feel like I was in an old city, right on the edge of woods and in the twilight.
Absolutely!!
Yeah the song just sounds cold and dark. Like you are in a forest at night, not knowing where you are, a crescent moon, and the moons light being the only thing guiding you.
@@lamasu8060 So true. That's beautiful ✨
@@katiem4935 thank you! :)
Pick apart
The pieces of your heart
And let me peer inside
Let me in
Where only your thoughts have been
Let me occupy your mind
As you do mine
You have lost
Too much love
To fear, doubt and distrust
Its not enough
You just threw away the key
To your heart
You don't get burned
'Cause nothing gets through
It makes it easier
Easier on you
But that much more difficult for me
To make you see
Love ain't fair
So there you are
My love
Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this
Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this
Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you can't live like this
Love ain't safe
You won't get hurt if you stay chaste
So you can wait
But I don't wanna waste my love
Bot
Also ty OP, you’re a lifesaver
Thank you
Anyone here in 2024? This song is still so good!
me
Me!
This at least could make it to spotify, it’s the most famous song besides somebody.
This in my opinion is the best Gotye song.
The soundscape is so cool, the distortions, the flutes, the shimmer, the whole percussiveness.... it's so different.
I love this
And then the climax around the middle of the song.
The drums sound kind of like a marching band but not as harsh.... amazing work
"Love ain't fair, so there you are, my love". God. This song. Hits right in the center.
This song is a masterpiece.
Benny Baumann so true
"Your hearts a mess!" is my favorite line
This should be as popular as Somebody that I used to know. Very powerful lyrics and message.
I wish this song was as long as my life
why?
Oof, that must be a short life
I wish my life was as long as this song
it is
Hope you live a long life
0:00-6:06. *Best part.*
Pepsi Cola Truer words have never been said, my friend.
Damn thanks!
I agree
wise words
I'm still super pissed that some people call Gotye a "one hit wonder" when this masterpiece exists
"Bronte" is also a beautiful Song.
And also like all of his other music lmao
Song really makes you feel like you're floating
Mad Monty
Floating? Desperately struggling to reach out n not sink you mean?!
Exactly
Why am I only now discovering this song? It's so good. I heard it play at the end credits of the great gatsby. Kept looping back just to hear it again
finally a comment that mentions The Great Gatsby
Exactly the same, only yesterday for me
It’s also part of the movie score played in some powerful scenes by an orchestra.
This is like 1000x better than the music video version, which is already a pretty damn good song. Hearing it how it was intended to be written makes it so damn powerful. Easily one of Gotye's masterpieces.
what makes this song even better is that the drum is actually a sample of the banana boat song, the dude flipped the sample to change the vibe damn
It was on this day May 13, 2014, that gotyemusic forgot their password.
Bruhhhhh
my birthday too 😔✌️
😂😭😂
this man really dropped an album with a hit song and disappeared not even trying to get back.
Now he’s just somebody that we used to know.
Drum solo. Amazing.
This song is as close to perfection as you can get!!!!
Honestly...just breathtaking.

Took a job in another country and was leaving my partner when this song was still recent. Played the album on loop as I packed my bags crying by myself. Never been that way before or after, it still resonates all these years after.
Did you reunite with your partner and listen to this song with joy now?
After having been a "Somebody that I used to know" fan boy all along, to discover this masterpiece which came out like 6 yrs from the former!! From 2006 and timeless!
Man just went in his studio one day and created a timeless gem
my heart's a mess and that's why i'm crying while listening to this
how are you right now?
The anthem of broken people falling in love just to find out they are already too damaged to live happily ever after.
This song is as close to perfection as you can get!!!!
Mono is not a k-pop, read about them
I feel the same way about Gotye. The drums are great, very Bonham, very jazzy and tight.
Gotye's music is the only work to hit me like a brick. I can't look into songs by him too close together. Best musician on the internet.
From time to time I come here to cry like a baby over my sad soul that it's reflected perfectly by Gotye vocals.
Your music makes me feel like my brain still works, and that excites me!
a masterpiece, one of its kind. powerful, emotional and never getting old. I listened to this song almost 20 years ago and from time to time I have been craving it. What is this witchcraft?

it’s called good music ;)
Oh my god, I feel like I could hear this song background for hours....
Criminally underrated as an artist... wow
“ You heart a mess , and you won’t admit to it “ I listen to this song since 2008
Gotte we need this in spotify
But I'm desperate to connect

July 2019

I love this song as well as somebody that I used to know.
I listened to these way younger and still love them now.
This is a masterpiece of art, music, melody and lyrics. It transponds me to another place in such a cozy and intense way even after a decade has passed.
This song is much better than "Somebody That I Used To Know", I don't understand why it just has 972,670 views.
Dominique Ríos Well now it has 1,145,795 and that's a lot more than some other artists I listen to :)
Savanah Mick Yeah I see :)
official video of it has 18,5 million
Because of GenZ kids who want a peppy tune for everything with minimally deep meaning.
This is not "hit material" unlike Somebody that i used to know. But this is still more listened than most of Gotye's songs (thanks to the movie this was in)

Love the drums
I think I just had an out of body experience listening to this........I think this is a sign I should listen to gotye
someone dear to me recommended this song and now i am listening to it on repeat.
0:46 my friends and I hit a stick on a soccer goal and it made almost that exact sound and we started playing the actual song.
Gotye is a genius.
Does anyone else think that the cover art looks like South America?
That's what I thought it was at first pfft. A map of South America.
I thought it was a liver.
It does in a way. Also to me looks sort of like Australia from a side view
It looked like a blood stain to me..🅱️
