Todd originally recorded this song with his band, Nazz. He rerecorded it on his Something/Anything album in the early 70's. The album was a two record set, the first three sides he wrote, produced, sang, engineered and played all the instruments. For the fourth side, he gathered a group of superb studio musicians and recorded these tracks live in the studio. This version is from that fourth side. Rundgren is an amazing artist. Check out his songs I Saw the Light, Long Flowing Robe, Just One Victory, We've Got to Get You a Woman, Boat on the Charles, Wolfman Jack... I can go on and on!
To this day, the most incredible thing about this beautiful song to my ears is how *_perfectly_* the music matches the lyrics throughout the whole song...
It came out in 1968 when he was with The Nazz. A slower version good for slow dancing. Todd went solo in the 70's and made the version of "Hello it's Me" that you just reacted to. That one is the classic everyone loves, me included. Todd was a production genius and still is a great musician. Next up try reacting to "I Saw the Light".
"Hello It's Me" was a top-five hit for Todd Rundgren in the US in late 1973. He recorded the song twice, the second time as a solo artist. Iconic early seventies -- the bridge -- "'Cause I never want to make you change for me" -- floats the melody around before finding the resolve. The bridge really stood out in the song back when I was five or six and hearing it on the radio in my dad's work truck when he picked me up from after school daycare on his way home from work. The little girl shown with him in a couple of the photos in the montage is Liv Tyler. As an adult she played Arwen Undómiel in the Lord of the Rings movies among her many film roles. Rundgren is her step father. Rundgren also engineered and produced albums for other artists, including Badfinger, Grand Funk Railroad, the New York Dolls, XTC, and Meat Loaf.
Some really good hits tonight! Enjoying it. The jazzy sound on this one is great. BTW, Todd is playing all of the instruments and supplying his own background vocals.
Written by Todd while he was in high school about his then girlfriend. Her father made her break up with Todd because of his long hair and she obeyed her fathers wish.
If you liked this song, I think you may also enjoy listening to Joni Mitchell's 'Help Me' (similar melancholic vibe that you picked up on) and 'Free Man in Paris'
This is one of the Best Songs Ever.
I'm so glad you reacted to Todd Rundgren. He has a lot of great songs! "I Saw the Light", "Love is the Answer", "Bang the Drum All Day"...
Love Todd…love this song ❤
Pure 70s gold

There's also a great little tune from 1971 called "We've Gotta Get You A Woman" by Runt. Runt *IS* Todd Rundgren.
Such a smooth soft rock song! Young man, once again you've brought a smile to this older man's face!
