One of the best covers ever.
Thank you for allowing the song to play all the way through before sharing your thoughts.
Another great cover is Simple Man by Shinedown.

I love this song. This band's cover of this is song raises it from a simple song from ordinary to truly extraordinary. I love watching people reacting to Disturb's cover. It's incredible. This man's voice is so sadly under appreciated. The cover of this song truly brought them to fame in basically a mainstream common audience.
Disturbed and David Draiman are worth incredible praise. Truly such an incredible cover.

    From Google
"Paul Simon, the original writer of "The Sound of Silence", praised Disturbed's cover of the song, saying he "liked it very much". Simon contacted Disturbed's David Draiman after the cover was released to tell him how much he enjoyed it."

I’m a child of the 60s that grew up right next to New York City. This song came from a Gospel/Folk album in 1964. (I still have the original "Wednesday Morning 3AM album).
It's hard for modern generations to understand the Biblical references or even the times for that matter. Remember, THERE WAS NO TECHNOLOGY BACK IN 1964. Just black and white TV with rabbit ear antennae. And rotary dial wall phones. And *unless you are familiar with NYC, you may not see the actual lyrical genius of this song.*
Yes, the words of the prophets actually WERE written on subway walls. And tenement halls. And in alleys and under bridges. Anywhere there was graffiti. This is SSSOOO UNIQUELY NYC!
*The NYC urban imagery is brilliant and so historically true. But the parallel Biblical imagery combined with the modern NYC imagery is beyond brilliant.*
The irony of being utterly alone even in a sea of *"ten thousand people, maybe more"* - In my memories I envision Times Square back in the day when it was booming. Throngs of people, but no one making eye contact; it was an unwritten rule. People not communicating anymore on a deep emotional level. Not able to connect emotionally anymore, love grows cold.
*Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you* …
“Jerusalem, O Jerusalem! How I have longed to gather your children into my arms as a mother hen gathers her chicks! But you would not." And Jesus wept.
*And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made!*
And they worshipped the golden calf. False idols and gods of our own making.
*"The sign flashed out its warning,* in “the words that it *was forming”* … the *“words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls”* …
And just what were the words that supernaturally formed on the wall in the book of Daniel? They told the king that he had been JUDGED and found wanting. His kingdom is taken from him. By the next morning, the king is dead and Babylon has fallen. Just like that.
How often is New York City likened to a modern-day Babylon? How long will we be silent? How long will we ignore the warnings?
Google Wednesday Morning 3AM. Listen to Bleeker Street from that album. It's about the same inability to communicate and connect emotionally. But at the end of Bleeker Street, there is still hope. At the end of Sound of Silence, we're beyond hope. It's JUDGEMENT DAY.
This was written in the 60s when the Bible and starting the day with daily prayer was first banned in public schools.
The Conservative/Christian "Father Knows Best" generations of the 50s and before, colliding with the hippie generation of "Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll!" Psychedelic drugs and "free love," Haight Ashbury and Woodstock and all that.
I still remember starting the day with a prayer in public school. And I also remember the deafening Sound of Silence the day it was taken away. Prayer was replaced for a bit with a "moment of silence" and then nothing.

Forgotten were the days when every single child in America from coast to coast used to start the day exactly the same way. In a common prayer, as one nation, one family, under God and INDIVISIBLE.
My greatest sadness is that my children and grandchildren will NEVER know the America I grew up in. All they'll ever know is the sound of silence.
And Biblical history repeats itself again, and again, and again.

And I read somewhere he was sick when he performed this on Conan !

He was actually sick from the flu when he sang this so he sounded a bit raspy but still great. The official music video is the best though imo, I love the story that the vid beautifully illustrates concerning the lyrics as you watch it.

Please, please, I implore you to look up the meaning behind this song. It hits so much harder, means so much more when you understand what the song writer's were saying and what the song is truly conveying with the lyrics.
For me, after looking up the meaning for this song, it brought tears to my eyes. Every. Single. Time.

This is the version Simon and Garfunkel wanted in the first place, but not doable in 1964

It is a great song. I have read that David asked to be alone when he sang it for video. Afterwards, they found him curled up like a baby on the floor crying. This song meant a lot to him too. Even Simon says this song now belongs to Disturbed and David Draiman. .

@@katherineolmstead8137 well I'll never say that it belongs to Disturbia. I don't like it at all, it's very dark and dreary sounding, depressing. I love the beautiful harmony of Simon and Garfunkel singing it, their instrumental style etc. It stirs up hope, empowering etc. The darkness of Disturbia's feels hopeless. I'm just not a fan, we all have different taste.
But I'm an Ace supporter all the way, so I like every reaction he shares, even if I'm not a fan of the song. He's a great reactor and a fine young man. That's why I'm here. ❤️
