"Black Cow" is a song by the American rock band Steely Dan, released on their 1977 album "Aja." The song was written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, the core members of Steely Dan. "Black Cow" is renowned for its smooth jazz-rock fusion sound and intricate musical arrangements, characteristic of Steely Dan's style.
The lyrics of "Black Cow" tell a story of heartbreak and longing, with themes of betrayal and disillusionment. The titular "black cow" refers to a mixed drink made with Kahlua and milk, which serves as a metaphor for seeking solace in alcohol after a failed relationship.
Musically, "Black Cow" features a sophisticated blend of jazz, rock, and R&B elements, including intricate guitar work, smooth saxophone solos, and intricate harmonies. The song's production is meticulous, with attention to detail in both the instrumentation and the mixing process.
Overall, "Black Cow" is a standout track in Steely Dan's discography, showcasing their unique blend of musical craftsmanship and lyrical storytelling. It remains a fan favorite and a classic example of the band's iconic sound. In recent history, Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz turned the beat into a hip hop anthem!
Aja is one of the greatest albums ever created. DO more guys.
I second this emotion
The Royal Scam and Gaucho also remarkable albums.
I bought this on its release and it stayed on my turntable forever! It is easily one of the most influential in my life and one of the few that still has a feel to that never gets old.
1978 ALBUM OF THE YEAR... for a reason.
Over rated
Steely Dan is their own genre!
utterly unique.
Yes, I wouldn't call it rock.
So true
I was going to leave this precise comment. Thanks for helping me to seed the light.
Yes, as were Supertramp and Sparks. Letter S is Special!
I love watching REAL music lovers discover Steely Dan. It's always a magical moment.
Somebody said that Steel Dan was your favorite bands favorite band. Damn right.
Steely :)
Ya'll gonna recognize a bunch of Steely Dan, their beats been sampled so many times, It's a deep, deep rabbit hole.
Wait till they find out Steel Dan is the name of a woman's pleasure device from a 1960's Novel. Kinda gives you a hint about the Type of Music they write about. Very Cryptic and very seedy...
Lol....the chrome one.....I've been listening to them for many years. Good to see others discover this music. 🥒 😆 🤣 😂
Peg, Deacon blues,FM no static,Hey nineteen, Aja ,and HOME AT LAST I HIGHLY RECOMMEND !
Kid Charlemagne NEXT
Which has also been sampled.
This is my vote for next!
Live with Fagen, McDonald and Scaggs- the Dukes of September!!!
Many lifelong fans will say that Steely Dan is their own unique music genre. Their songs touch rock, R&B, funk, and Jazz.
This song not only sounds great, but it just FEELS great.
a Black Cow was a type of milkshake in the 50's and 60's
It's also an alcoholic drink with root beer, evaporated milk, and bourbon.
@@michlkwitzpretty sure this is referring to the alcoholic drink, and not the milkshake.
It was also a chewy chocolate and caramel candy bar. Not relevant here but just to cover all bases. 🤣
It''s also a popular mammal. There's a large group of people that dedicate their whole lifestyle to this animal calling themselves "The Cowboys" no joke.
@@RabbiSteve Ya, this ain't no "malt shop" they're talking about here!
Steely Dan is the probably the best bands of all time. They meshed and spanned Jazz/Soul/Rock Fusion with some of the greatest players of the day in the studio. There is barely a song that you will skip on any of their albums. They are timeless, and got regular play on the radio when they came out and for decades and are still covered by Big Bands, funk bands, jazz bands, rock and acoustic players.
Ingredients For an orginal Black Cow
2 Tbsp chocolate syrup
1 cup coca-cola
1 Tbsp cream
1 scoop chocolate ice cream
Masters of the TIGHT groove. Every piece on time and on point.
Consistently. Song after song. Album after album.
Well said!
.Steely Dan has the best studio musicians in the business period! They integrate jazz, blues rock better than anyone else.😊
You cannot not dig this song…it’s a vibe
Frank Zappa said, "Jazz isn’t dead, it just smells funny." For those folks that can’t get a grip on jazz, The Dan delivers the goods with an admixture replete with R&B, Afro Cuban rhythms, Rock&Roll, etc that seduces the listeners to succumb to the gravity of jazz, like tides obey the moon. One becomes a lover of jazz without knowing it. Like those that don’t care for classical music, but have been moved to tears by it when watching those movies that employ the classical as soundtracks.
It’s amazing how many hip hop tracks use samples from Steely Dan songs.
The smile on your faces tells you all you need to know. Great reaction.
I’ve never seen a person (not one!) NOT LOVE this song after they hear it.
Y'all should definitely invest more time exploring Steely Dan's catalogue; they are hands-down one of the greatest songwriting duos/bands ever. Steely Dan totally fucking rock!
Smooth groove kick back awesomeness!!! Always loved these guys !!! Always love the Saxophone!!
So jazzy, funky, and outrageously good!!!!!
"Rock" as a genre covers a lot of ground. Steely Dan played rock, and funk, and a bit of soul, all while heavily jazz influenced. One of my favorite bands.
You could probably randomly pick any Steely Dan song and enjoy it. Fenom ain't lying, y'all are in for a treat if you keep up the Steely Dan ride.
Can't go wrong with Steely Dan
THE DAN IS THEIR OWN GENRE....
PLAY THE ENTIRE ALBUM AND YOU'LL BE HOOKED.
ALL THEIR OTHER ALBUMS ARE ALSO GREAT.
Steely Dan is their own genre
Everyone smiling, gotta love music that puts a smile on your face
So right that 80’’s and 90’s don’t hold a candle to ‘70s
It's my opinion that the 70's was the greatest decade of music in human history.
I second that!
👍👍 It's the damn truth.
lol try some Soundgarden
@lmkeniston216 Not saying that there wasn't any good music in the 80's and 90's. Just doesn't even compare to the depth and breadth of music in the 70's in so many genres.
This album is named as one of the best mastered albums ever by mastering engineers, and one of the top references for mixes.
Pretty much their own sound - both the music and the lyrics. Genre? It's a mash-up of rock/jazz/funk/soul, often with a touch of sarcasm and cynicism - both music and lyrics..
It's also one of favorites. :-)
Thanks for the reaction and discussion!
Apex of musicianship.
One of the best songs of all time .
I consider "Peg" from this album the best pop song ever recorded.
I will stipulate to that...infectious
Steely Dan is one of the most underrated legendary fusionist two person band ever Donald Fagen amazing
Steely Dan is a group that did things outside of the rock mainstream, and they enjoyed great success.
One of my favorite Steely songs from the 70’s good times. A black cow is also an alcoholic beverage. Thank you guys
Rock is so diverse. As a teenager my friends and I would listen to AC/DC Aerosmith Van Halen etc.. during the party, Pink Floyd at the end of the night with the lights off. Steely Dan when we wanted to groove, Almond brothers, Eagles, when we were in more of a country mood- Throw in Tommy Bolin private eye album once in a while - rock is diverse - we all listened to multiple genres of rock- good music was the kry
Blues and jazz are the beginning of Rock and Roll and Steely Dan used all of that!
Y'all gonna love Deacon Blues, Home At Last, Hey Nineteen, Josie, Peg, Do It Again, Dirty Work, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, man there are so many more. Don't sleep on em.
Fagan and Becker brought in the very best “session artists” to help musically attain their vision…..Outstanding duo, and contributing artists.
Lets go gentlemen, Steely Dan for real!!!
You’ll love that whole album. It’s all jazz inspired. The title track is absolutely legendary.
Aja is a sonic masterpiece and is still used to test high end hifi in those expensive equipment shops.
The musicality is utter perfection because they only used the very top session musicians of the time.
A time that involved REAL INSTRUMENTS !!
And REAL MUSICIANS !!!
I know,how radical is that.
The lyrics to this song and the music together are absolute fire!! Love the line - “…just when it seems so clear, that it’s over now - drink your big black cow - and get outta here.” Yaaaaaassss!!!!! Steely Dan is definitely in a stratosphere all by themselves.
Down for this rabbit hole.
Calling them a rock band is really damning them with feint praise , they're so much more than that.
Hey they’re new Dan traversers. We can cut them a break huh? 😂
And that groove in the beginning was 20yrs before the tune from the 90's
This is the album I listen to when I wanna chill. Brilliance.
If you're gonna do black cow I'm there baby
Steely Dan is your favorite band’s favorite band.
Straight banger! Thanks for the share guys! (A black cow is a rum drink)
Steely Dan Yes! I have Sooo many favorite artists. Y'all keep going! There's so much to choose from
Fantastic band always considered them more of a fusion jazz band or a fusion rock band . Great music.
A black cow is a root beer float. Had them all the time growing up back in the sixties. Great song!!!
Yes finally some Dan
Your gonna be surprised
One of my favs! What a jam this is!
You should know…how all the pros play the game…
They know your name.
They change their name
This music has been sampled a lot. At least once or twice. Steely always brings the heat!
Steely Dan is AWESOME !!!! So much for you to dive into !!! Royal Scam, Aja, Dirty Work are a few of my favs but so many more !!! Pure Gold !! One of my fav artists !!!! ❤❤❤❤
Gotta call for more Steely! Try song Peg! Has Michael McDonald in back up vocals. Love your reaction!👊🏻
I purchased the Aja album when it first came out. I played it to death BUT I still have that same album, and it sounds great because some of us treated our records like gold... carefully handling them, keeping the turntable stylus balanced and in pristine shape, cleaning the vinyl with special cloth, etc.. We were crazy about our vinyl collection. I'm proud to say my collection is amazing. That album cover is also so evocative of the title song! It always transported me to another beautiful, exotic place. Greetings from Brooklyn!
The 70's had a very wide range of music that was available. Individual bands and artists would cover one end of the spectrum to the other. You never knew what you were gonna get when a new album came out. It was a great time to be a teenager!
Man, I miss the electric piano. That's an instrument that disappeared in the 80's, but it has a sound all its own.
Steely Dan were a musicians' band. Every band in the 70's admired them. They were a genre of their own, but the closest label would "jazz fusion". Great stuff. The entire _Aja_ album is diamond fine. You'll enjoy the rabbit hole. :)
Rock writers, hiring Jazz players for the studio
Steely Dan is Donald Fagen and Walter Becker ~ if you look at the info on the musicians playing, they'll be different for every song. They recruited only the best musicians to play with them, They are my favorite band of all time. I was very fortunate to see them in 1972 in Chicago, I was 16. They were not the headliner ~ they opened for the band, The Guess Who. There are no bad Steely Dan songs ~ enjoy!
Steely Dan loved to show thier influences. They even mention them in the lyrics like 'Aretha Franklin' in Hey 19 and yep he's singing like Aretha Franklin.
Black Cow was the name of a soft drink back in the day..
Hope you guys get a chance to listen to entire record.
Once you hear; “you’ll know” exactly!
A staple on smooth jazz progressive radio Steely Dan
Back in the 70's we used to listen to a "Progressive Rock" station out of Philly, who played all of Steely Dan's unique music... whereas the other "Rock" stations in the area, only played the songs that were more like "Top 40" hits. That being said, this Progressive Rock Station, always lead me to believe that Steely Dan was in fact, progressive rock. Please play more Steely Dan. They have quite a few great albums! Thanks guys!
This album came out when I was in junior high, and it was one of my favorite albums even at that young age - I've always loved great music! The entire album is absolutely fantastic!
When my wife passed and I moved, I sold about 3,000 of my Albums except for about 20 CD's. This album was one of them. It's great from start to finish.
The jazz legend Tom Scott on sax
Thank you Fenom for this one!
Background singers on this cut ARE THE BEST!!
More Steely Dan, please. Do the entire album Aja. Your minds will be blown.
This was released when I was in university. Stereo stores used Aja as their stereo speaker test music for customers. Also, Steely Dan was usually your favourite band's favourite band!!
Kid charlemagne Should be your next Pick It is also been referenced
Steely Dan.
I liked them for a while. But in the last 5 years I've really appreciated their music.
Their catalog is so vast.
Yall need to check out Hey Nineteen.
The Dan is its own genre! Perfection!
My all time roadtrip group. My kids grew up on their music. Have seen them in 3 great venues over the years. Please do more! Aja and Royal Scam are my fav albums.
It is not necessary to hear any of you say a word... it is all in the body movement as the song moves along... to see you within 6-8 beats be "into it" ... thanks for sharing your true feelings! If music does not literally move you it isn't music. And isn't interesting to find that music you are comfortable with originated 20 years prior!!! Excellent is just that, excellent. It is in the song that we can all unite.
Uptown baby! We gets down baby!
And for people curious, a Black Cow is a regional soft drink. Like close to a chocolate milkshake type thing.
I had the 8 track. Now the CD. Aja is so good!!❤❤❤❤
The entire album is fantastic. The title track is my favorite and a must listen.
So outrageous!
Janis joplin- song - ‘work me lord’ live Stockholm 1969. - best female vocals in rock, trust me she is an icon - The BEST female vocals prove me wrong after listening, watching her live in 69 in Stockholm
One of the most sampled band in hip hop such a rabbit hole!!! Fmmmmm
The Aja album is an incredible piece of musical genius. It’s music you hear as well as music you feel. Great video. Thanks.
When they came out, many rock n rollers hated them...referred to them as "the wine and cheese" band. I never understood that.
I love em, and I'm a LZ freak. ❤😊
Smooth AND funky, though to mix those.
Great response gentleman.
This is on the short list of albums you take to that private island. Aja IS that good. The horn and vocal arrangements in this song are perfection…
Steely Dan owns 100% of the publishing of "Uptown Baby" since they released it without proper sample clearance.
Glad to see Ollie enjoyed this like he did. This album can be played, drop the needle and there’s not a bad note, riff or song on it.
I always knew a “Black Cow” to be an alcoholic drink along the veins of a “Grasshopper” with different booze. Everyone I knew owned this album in High School. We were so lucky..
What a great reaction to a great song! As others have said, Steely Dan is almost a genre all onto themselves. From their early days in early 70’s as a self contained touring band and their huge AM hits, “Reelin’ In The Years” and “Do It Again”, to when the two main songwriters, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen (who did the lead vocals here and most of them), fired the band and then would keep progressing and go into a studio with the best studio musicians they could, and record albums without touring. Including the album from which “Black Cow is from, AJA. On which every single song is fire. Might be their best album, although that case could be made for pretty much every album, including GAUCHO, the follow-up to AJA, and maybe my personal favorite or at least tied with AJA.
The title track of AJA, features one of the best sax solos ever from the recently departed Wayne Shorter, may his music always bless us, one of my favorite musicians of all time: from his time with Miles, to his epic stint in the band he co-led with keyboard wizard Joe Zawinul, Weather Report (and that’s another band, albeit mostly instrumental, you should consider reacting to. Start with their album HEAVY WEATHER, and maybe the hit song from that album, “Birdland”, which jazz vocal group The Manhattan Transfer covered doing a version with lyrics), to his final almost 20 year run (from 2000 to 2019) with his Wayne Shorter Quartet, which I had the privilege of seeing 5 times.
Check it out!
Thank you for sharing this reaction.
Theyre a great musical unifier!
Fun reaction.
Steely Dan is a top three 'stranded on an island' bands
In addition to the exquisite musicianship, Steely Dan spent a lot of time on the production of the pieces. Pay attention to the mixing of the instrumentation. Many, many layers. You need to listen to more Steely Dan. AJA is a masterful album.
Aja is a tremendous lp.worth checking out.
Where does one begin to describe the artists known as Steely Dan? There are no bad songs- NONE- so you best get on with it! And hats off to you -70s rock is the best.
