I love this format for calling and commissioning an instrument into the service of the Lord. I also like that it is improvised by such a worthy performer. I hope that the congregation also got to sing with this organist too. A large crowd, a new organ, and a borrowed organist can sometimes call forth great singing and praise! How exciting and such an encouragement to me today!

What a spell binding service, and a lovely tradition the French have to awaken the Organ, it seems a bit cramped in the organ loft.

If I was around in 1932 when the building was design - the architect and I would likely have gotten into a fight over a few things. But it is a beautiful church. Come visit: www.olrbrooklyn.org

How lucky you were that Latry himself came to play... I'm trying to have our 18th century organ restaured (here in Louviers, France), it was played by Duruflé and Cavaillé-Coll came to add a few stops in his time, it would be a shame. Thanks for showing me that it's still possible to to such things when you have the passion !

France is different the government owns you pipe organs. That makes it more complicated. But You must persist in a logical, measured, manner and never give up. Everyone laughed at me - they really laughed in my face - some members of the NYC AGO were very mean to me and told me this was impossible and the organ was junk. But some were very encouraging.
Believe Persist Make lots of friends and you can do it. Don't listen to people who are negative - like the NYC AGO was to me.

+pipe-organ it's about money we never have enough in Australia and its up to the church to foot the bill except for the wonderful ones we have in Town Halls across the country. Plus there's this horrible new wave of bands in churches don't think of seen that in the US.

Thank you so so much for posting this video. I was suppose to be at this dedication but due to circumstances beyond my control, I could not make it. Wish I could have another opportunity.

A wonderful performance by M. Latry as usual. He seemed to be looking down at his feet a lot though...I wonder if the pedalboard spacing was something other than that to which he's accustomed or if he was looking for the toe pistons or what....

The toe studs are close together, he was just looking down to make sure he got the right stud. Thank you for your comment. Read more about this pipe organ that was repaired and fully restored. www.olrbrooklyn.org/pipeorgan/

pipe-organ Thank you for your (quick!) reply. An interesting read about the organ and I enjoyed M. Latry's performance of the Allegro Vivace from the Widor V as well. Did he play the Franck Prelude, Fugue, and Variations Op 18? He seems to enjoy playing it and I think the organ would suit it well. Thanks again!

Michael Cloud Yes he did play the Franck. I believe he had a terrific time. I don't know if he knew what was going to happen, a parish church in the middle of Brooklyn? Maybe he thought he would be playing for 10 people :-) I wasn't about to let that happen! I did not stop promoting the recital until we sold out the church. We had people flying in from all over for it. One man even came from the Netherlands specially for that recital!
Look at Olivier Latry's smile as he is about to start playing the encore The Widor Toccata. You can see me turning to comment to Bob Schopp and Mike Quimby if they had returned the same organ that was taken out. This organ used to sound like kazoos in heat.
Enjoy the Widor Toccata on the little pipe organ that could! Organist Olivier Latry plays the Widor Toccata from Symphony No. 5
Come here the organ this fall, we are having some terrific recitals.

The organ is absolutely astounding, but it needs a small scale 32 reed.
    But its realy gorgeous.
