While I understand the yearning for an organ that reused more of the original Aeolian-Skinner pipework and restored more to the original G. Donald Harrison specification, the Dobson organ at St. Thomas Church sounds BEAUTIFUL when played through proper hi-fi headphones as I did. The Taylor & Boody sounds to me like the pipes take a little too long on the attack part of their speech at full organ.

I do not understand why the "flexible" wind (aka under-winded) sound is desirable to anyone. Also, if they wanted that kind of an organ, WHY would they hire Taylor & Boody instead of a firm who understands and builds in that style? I just don't get it.

Too much distortion in the St.Thomas recording for me to render an opinion regarding the Dobson organ - checked with other UA-cam recordings of other organs to see whether the distortion is because of my playback equipment but other recordings are much better quality. Kenneth Leighton is a favorite rather modern composer, have CDs of all of his organ compositions with an especially stunning one of some of his works played on the impressive Walker-plus Wood organ at Blackburn Cathedral. The St. Thomas Filsell's rendering of the Ite missa of Missa de Gloria is rather spectacular and his improv. on the Welsh hymn tune Llanfair is imaginative and certainly evokes the Easter hymn with which it is associated in many hymnals, recalling the glory and victory of Jesus's resurrection.

Reheard this recording with much less distortion. I have a number of CDs with Gerre Hancock and Todd Wilson playing the prior Aeolian - Skinner organ. Somewhat difficult to judge the current Dobson organ on the basis of two pieces of music but preliminarily I would have preferred that the Aeolian - Skinner pipework would have been reused in its entirety in a reconstructed instrument as their tonal qualities and colors were more varied and interesting to hear. Hancock's registrations made full use of that organ's capabilities, as did Wilson's.
