I'd love to see this with an electric motor as a fun microlight for slow flying
The idea was a one-time flight. It wasn't built for anything more practical.
Peter Sripol on YT.
Crazy to see how FliteTest has grown from the times of making videos with two guys named Josh! Keep up the good work! Keep inspiring the world!
And the amazing Peter stripol😂
@@cartmanrlsusall dont forget david vintersomething !
I recently seen a B-25 perform extremely well at a similar event.
They had a flat wing with a wide chord and an undercamber. Their smartest feature was an elevated dolly to maximize takeoff height.
It was already discussed in the build videos. At this event they were not allowed launch towers or as you say high dollies. Same with the different ideas about rope assisted pulley systems which had been used in earlier competitions to achieve higher launch speed.
The dolly with a tower, as used by the record setting B-25, not only gives more vertical distance but the rotation of the dolly/tower at the launch point gives a speed boost to the plane so it actually develops lift and effective control surfaces before hitting the water. Everything else just doesnt get out of a stall. And you do need a stronger push crew. Nice looking plane though.
Why not just paraglide off a catapult on top a tower
THIS! I mentioned this last video too. That dolly cradle set up is exactly why it was successful!
The chicken whisperers set the record in long Beach ca. At 246ft
you need Cool Runnings push crew
The max height for a launch platform is now 4 feet 🫤
I’d love to see that fly in good conditions. When you tested the scale model it felt like it was going to fly if you sneezed at it.
Good work Flite Test.
Thank you!
The model did not have a scale pilot weight. The pilot weighs 60% to 75% of the ultralight weight.
the problem with tailwind out of a slope or ramp is that not only the wind is moving in the wrong direction and stealing your lift.. when it reaches the edge it goes down and creates even more downdraft wich sucks you down even harder .. and you go faster as the wind is "helping" you speed but not to fly ..
I wonder why they don't make the launching area movable, so it can be turned to face directly into the wind, on competition day....
while that is good for flights that defeats the purpose of the contest. The "test" is to do the best you can in the conditions presented.
When every one nose dives, it's hard to agree with that premise.@@muskokamike127
Because 45 minute flights would get boring.
@kydrythm some of have an attention span.
Flying well is not an important prerequisite for flugtag craft. Tailwind probably adds a safety element for the contraptions that have the aerodynamics of a cardboard box.
I second the calls for a couple of football players not afraid to run off the deck as a launch team. Would love to see the ultralight version soaring one day!
running backs or receivers....you need speed not might. You need cheetahs not rhinos lol......
@@muskokamike127but you need power too
Call for some bobsled competitors....they're really good at accelerating while pushing things.
@@recoilrob324 my thoughts exactly.....I was actually going to use that analogy in my post!!!
@@SoloRenegade not really, if 2 guys can carry the plane then 4 can certainly push it easily.
Wow that glider is very well made, it survive that hard landing perfectly 👍
Yes, a very well, made aircraft !
I want to see it fly again with a headwind for the launch. I think you could go a long ways then!! Beautiful build and design. Congratulations!!
Flite Test crew are my heroes! Wish I lived closer.
Why doesn't this have way more views? This is fantastic!
I’m so glad you all were last to go, I got there late and was so worried! AMAZING JOB! You guys were phenomenal!
Congratulations on the win!
Another Great Fun Project guys!!! Thanks so much for sharing with us!!!!!!
You are very welcome thank you for following along!
AWESOME! Congratulations!
Here's a shout out to the late „Didi“ Mateschitz! What a brilliant, daring, inventive mind he was. What a dreamer. So inspiring! RIP!
Congrats you guys!
Great design! Fabricating is so hard! Congratulations on the win!
Im glad I randomly found this video! Congrats on the win! - Guy from the Giant Skateboard team :)
Y’all put on a great show! Sure the Double Trouble would make a cool model. Can’t wait for the plans 👍👍
You guys are amazing! 🤩🤩
Do it again with a headwind! Great job guys!
I had no idea your team had the UDF plane until I saw the video! Minions rock! Double Trouble was beautiful. Hope you enjoyed our city and it's ever-changing weather
Good job! Looking forward to that Ultralight
I love the cup plane. It kinda looks like the old U.S.S. Enterprise layout from the 1960's.
loved it. Keep doing flugtag! You guys are amazing, love what you do!
Great job guys. Hope to see a drawing to build the RC version of Double Trouble soon!😊
Ya really pushing the limits boys! LOVE IT
Definitely do it again!
Right on congrats you guys
Bloody top effort legends
Concratulations Guys! What a phantastic Project. You had fun. We had fun following. Outstanding performance. Many greetings from Germany.❤😂
Agree with the ultra light idea! That thing smacked the water and was robust enough it looks like all it did was flex and with stand it. Put 4/6/8 monster motors on it and at least see if you can get it into ground effect flight and go from there...
I would love to see what the completed version can do with a headwind!!!
Was your original salvaged? Or at least enough to recreate the flight but with a headwind? Perhaps using a platform o. The side of hill or something. I know in that situation there would be more “ground effect” present, but man I’d love to see that plane on ideal conditions.
Just a few degrees downslope on the runway would go a long way in getting the little bit of extra speed needed...you could tell a few of these planes were right on the cusp of gliding out.
good idea, especially if the pushers aren't allowed to jump off the deck, they have to stop pushing before the end of it. if it were downhill even just for the end portion that would at least keep the aircraft from decelerating.
CONGRATULATIONS, greetings from Mexico.
I'd LOVE to see this smaller and RC! That would be so amazing!
Congrats🎉
Congratulations 🎉 🎉🎉
Yes revisit please, this design could do so much in better conditions.
This is cool. Haven't seen it but I know it will be good.
Congrats on the win.
Thank you!
I'd love a revisit of this plane.
this needs to be made into an ultralight
I agree it was a beautiful bird. Strong light and I believe it would fly great at low seep maybe we will revisit it in the future 😉
Congrats on the win, but we wanna see it fly to its potential!
Jeez, been following you guys since the beginning. Love it. I’m a CFI in both glider and airplane, can’t wait to see you move into GA.
Yes!
MAKE IT RC!
Its been years since I watched their flying battleship testing video, now I comeback and a lot changed, I'm so happy that your channel had grew up, keep up the good work dudes, and goodluck ✌
I will support you here from Philippines
PLEEEESSE fly it again !!! ❤❤❤ well done
Yeah, you guys should revisit the design and flying possibilities with double trouble! Good idea.
3:30-4:36
Thx Josh 4 explaining. ( i needed that)
I grew up in NE Ohio and built model aircraft from the time I was seven years old. I often thought that my miniature aircraft, if scaled up, could be used as piloted aircraft. You, gentlemen, are living my dream! Yes! I want to see you build “Double? No Trouble!” as an ultralite. The tailwind sank you, but your design looked good for at least 112 ft!
Yes, good design. Stabilizer did kind of an oscillation, but seemed to do all it could, for the tailwind conditions. Thanks for the follow through, good work.
They need an oversize tail plane because the speed is too low for it to have any authority.
Congratulations 🎉👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Love it.
Yes Please and make it a model for us to fly ! TO AWESOME !
Ultralight for sure!!!!
What an awesome ultralight that would make love to have one !!!! WoW!!!
Hey guys, do it again, I can't get enough!!
Great job
Under right conditions it would fly. Love to see it
Double Trouble would make a great model to fly at home. I need one in my hangar yesterday! 😁
You should fly it again, somewhere, that the wind is favorable to see what Double Trouble can do!
For sure find a launch hill with proper wind direction and yaw control worth seeing it fly.
That bad weather was... "Dispicable"...
The longest flights from years past have either a tall launch dolly, or low drag airfoils. Get rid of the undercambered biplane wings and get the tallest launch platform that the rules allow. If you combine low drag with the tall launch platform you’ll have a chance at breaking the record.
i think a hang glider design once won, which makes sense in terms of wing area inside a height/width limit. also that warbird style one was pretty great. It is disappointing when nobody gets a satisfying glide going. Would love to see the wing span rule and launch deck length increased, or at the very least a launch platform that faces the oncoming wind
You are now limited to a total height of 8’. That’s including the dolly. No more mechanical assistance either. But we will not give up. Such a fun event. :)
@FliteTest After watching the video, given the conditions, I think you would have gotten more distance if the plane was balanced tail heavy. You really didn't have enough airspeed to get the tail flying, so the nose pitched down on launch. With the wing pitched at that negative AOA, the wing never really got a chance to produce any lift. If the CG was more aft, the plane would come off the ramp flat. Not very good for control or recovery but you only need this tail heavy plane to fly once!
I am 100% looking forward to seeing this aircraft turn into an ultra light
You should build your own launch barge that you can place in such a way that you'll be guaranteed a headwind and launched it yourself. Although this might be expensive it would be good UA-cam content and would give you a chance to test your designs. Definitely would watch that content I love all of your videos. Thanks for the great content
Would love to try this someday
Congratulations guys! Now show us how it flies in a headwind!
Darn tailwind, it still looked amazing though!🎉
You guys are always winners in my book ❤️. This Old Man been following since almost day one 👍. Looking forward to seeing your next video. Love You Guys ✈️🧔💝💝💝💝💝💝💝
a need for speen a need to revisit well done guys
You guys have inspired me to build the WINNING design for next year! 😱😁😝🤪🤣👍👍🇺🇲
Does your airspeed become less and so you have less left with a tail wind as well? Regardless of the platform’s turbulent air.
yes
Rv12! Absolutely!
Would the rules allow for a big extension cart the plane rides on the front with the rear far back into the platform, with the pushers standing on it for counter-weight while pushing (like a scooter) to get the plane far enough ahead to go over the downward wind at the end of the platform before the pushers jump off and let the cart drop?
Revisit it and try again! Head wind style 💪🏽
Cincinnati wind always blows east/north east, they could easily flip launch platform around. Something to bring up if they ever do it here again.
Yes, build this as an ultralight!
Absolutely, go for it next time.
this needs to be a kit
I wonder how well it would fly with a prop in the front, or maybe a paramotor motor in the back
Could you add enough R/C motors to make this an ultralight, or would you need something bigger?
Maybe I should have said, the fuselage had oscillations horizontally.
I wasn't there, just a UA-cam observation.
I agree that the test flights showed huge promise. Keep up the good work.
What if you had a very long swingarm on the launching platform with a heavy forward weight. As you run it off the lip it drops and the other end of the arm catapults the glider up and out a bit like a trebuchet.
Josh, "DT" sure stayed together nicely after hitting the water!
I’m very interested in this as an ultra light!!
Flite test is always the first.
You need a triplane or a quad plane to make up for the lift. RCTestflight built an excellent flying model of a 4 wing plane.
depending on the weight you guys should put a small luggage rack some where on it if it becomes an ultra light plane as it it could make for a very efficent desighn and possibly practical for short range transport
All the planning went into the aircraft and none into the launch system. I don't think you had enough wing area regardless. For high lift, low stall speed you need a highly cambered wing with reverse camber on the bottom of the wing. This ultralight already exists btw, the Dingo. ua-cam.com/video/UmKW9ajxQ3k/v-deo.html
Everyone was nose-diving.
I want to see you guys try that plane again, but this time into a good headwind. But I do not know where you could try to test it at.
yes try the ultra light version with battery power with solar
Yes I think the Double Trouble has potential.
It reminds me of the Vimy
Falling, with style.
Time to hire a bob sleigh crew to push that thing! Great job!
Work on how to increase the launch speed. Leverage?
