This brings back memories. I grew up around Dick VanGrunsen when I was young and he had a small spot in North Plains Oregon. My dad knew Dick well. For a highschool project, Dick let me use a RV6 fuel cell to demonstrate different tank sloshes. My dad built several RVs had an RV4 growing up and until recently My dad's best friend was one of Dicks CFII pilots who got builders up to snuff flying their new machines. Just awesome videos guys
I remember my dad and I seeing Van work on his RV-4 prototype at Hillsboro. I was at his North Plains site from time to time as well. I had a good friend named Bob Walker who made fiberglass parts for Van for awhile.
Congratulations! I built an RV-12 between 2012/2015. An excellent kit and extremely well made. Especially now with some improvements over the last few years. Lots of quality information about the model available too. Simply a classic!
In 1978, I went to work, flying for Hughes Airwest. I was first officer on the F-27. On some of my trips I flew with a captain that was Van’s brother. I was with him on a trip that laid over in Portland for about 4 days. He rented a car and took me with him to visit his brother and I got a tour of Van’s early factory which was a long narrow structure. What a difference. I saw the first engine (volks wagon) used in the prototype of his first airplane. This early “factory” was next to his house.
Great to see this type of biz actually exists. What an inspiration and confirmation; that as long as there are people this passionate with what they produce, this country will be a-ok 👍👍
Hey, you guys seen those flat pack "cardboard" drones being sold to Ukraine? They look like they're actually foam board and they look super similar to your designs.
great to see you out here in the Pacific Northwest. i was just at Edgewater this last July. had a great visit. thanks for the time you took to show me around.
Great tour of Vans! Great to see American manufacturing doing well. Ive loved Vans planes since the 80's. RV3 was/is beautiful. They are all lovely planes. All metal! Huyah!
Josh this Old Man from Washington NC can see the excitement all over your face 🤣. The kid is getting a new toy😅. The only difference between Men and Boys. THE PRICE OF THEIR TOYS 🛩️. Love You Guys ✈️🧔💝💝💝💝💝💝💝
Shoot, you were right in my backyard, I used to work at the aurora airport and right next to vans for a couple of years. Looked at them for a job a couple of times but they never seemed to need my skill set.
Dear Flitetest crew, I have a challenge for you guys, I want you to build a air worthy Quad x2 full size racer out of foam... I have watched your fancy hot knife to slice big blocks, and using carbon rods could it be done? ond then therre's wrapping?,// only you get to decide.. Rich in the UK
If a plane needs x amount of lift from a pair of wings,… can 2 wings of shorter length accomplish the same lift? Ie… can a biplane have shorter wings than a mono plane? Could a jumbo jet be a biplane with shorter wings?
It must just be vastly superior to make the fuselage as one composite part, both superior shape, stronger, lighter and much easier to make. With double curved surfaces that good aerodynamics naturally has then just a carbon fiber shell with no frames or stringers will be inherently stiff. Hard to beat for weight. And also naturally well suited for pressurization. It's just vastly superior so quite a crime so many still hang on to titanic era construction. Composite isn't subject to metal fatigue either. If you wanted to make your own I'd recommend a glider style body shape and maybe two canard style steerable wings as the control surfaces. That way the control path is very short, you could basically hold them directly in your hands and the rest of the plane has zero mechanics. Except for motor.

Should hook up with Cleetus McFarland and Mike Patey, that would be one fantastic video!
Great factory tour! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the video.
I’ve been in this same building and took a full tour
This guy giving the tour gives me major "Red Green's more competent cousin" vibes.😂
What type of laser do you cut your foam kits with?
When are you going to make another video about the hovercraft
Wow! Ya’ll should do a giant long easy
So cool I’m building an rv12is

My brother has built two RV airedale, now sold both. When I saw the title of this video, i was thinking Revell? Monogram? Who's the largest?
amazing ! I'm losing consciousness about this machinery, because i know how much development work behind it has to be done !
