Make sure to use your black tank flush if equipped every time you empty the tank. Debris gets stuck on the sensor in the tank and will give you an inaccurate reading.

My advise as a cheap option to fix your DC issue. Add a second smaller (low cost battery) just for the Generator starting and not connected to the rest of the system. Let the generator charge just that batter with its charging system. They tend to be pretty low output charging and it will be fine for just the starter battery. Ad 12AC charger to charge the main battery when the generator is running. The amount you run the Genny you should be able to keep the main batter pretty full and you will always be able to start the Genny if you drain the main battery.

Tucker, you had a solar set up on the old van-mobile that you seemed pretty happy with. Did you get rid of that when you sold the van? If so, I think an investment in solar, especially where it's pre-wired, would be very worthwhile! Looks really good though. Good luck with it!

Tucker: I watch your stuff all the time. It's awesome. With regard to your toy-mobile-travel trailer's power; Get yourself a matching battery to what you have now. Mount it next to the other if you can match boxes and have room. Get yourself a roof mounted solar panel or two. All the while I was watching your vid, it was nice and sunny and the battery was just sitting there... :( You'll need a small "charge controller" of about 30 amps - $50-100 bucks and you will never run out of power. ALSO: Get yourself a galvanized two-piece pole 2-3 inch dia, X 6 to 8 feet each -- so that you can put them together to make about a 12-16 or 20' pole total that has a square/rectangular plate welded to one end of one of the pipes. Place a small wind generator (with a cool small propeller) on top of one of the poles (the top one without the square/rectangular plate). Park a vehicle tire on the plate. Wire that also into the charge controller and viola, you now have solar AND wind....you will never run out of electricity then again. Just my $.02 Cheers bud and fly safe. Stay strong and stay healthy. Looking for more vids!!

I'm a sailor that lives on a sail boat, so allow me to give you a little battery 101 class:
That battery is probably not a deep cycle battery. Be aware, many of these batteries will be marketed as a deep cycle, but will not have the giant lead anodes that a true deep cycle battery has.
You probably know that when you discharge a battery past a certain point, you damage it so that I will no longer be able to charge up as high and it will drastically diminish the amount of charge/discharge cycles that it can do. In a car starter battery this is about 10% depth of discharge. On a an intermediate battery like the one that's probably on that toy hauler, it's about 25% depth of discharge. On a true deep cycle battery you can fairly safely discharge to 50% of capacity and still maintain 1000-2000 cycles before the battery shows signs of wear. Discharging a lead acid battery down to 0% charge state will kill a battery very, very fast.
Another thing to consider is that deep cycle batteries do not have as many cranking amps as a traditional starting battery or an intermediate battery. So, when buying a replacement, pay attention to the cranking amps, and know the cranking amps that genset requires.
There's a new technology for lead acid that many are not aware of. It's called carbon foam. There's only one manufacturer (Firefly) of these batteries, but this tech provides some distinct advantages over any of the more traditional lead acid types. It charges much faster, it has more cranking amps, it lasts much longer and can be discharged deeper than a deep cycle AGM. It's only disadvantage is that it's more than twice the price of a true deep cycle AGM. I have not tried these batteries yet, but will when my current bank is replaced in the next year or so.
My recommendation to you is that you purchase two traditional, deep cycle, AGM, Group 31, 100ah batteries, or other combinations that equal 200AH+ at 12 volts. This should cost you about $400, and as long as you keep them on a trickle charge when you aren't using the toy hauler, aren't using them everyday, and aren't draining them past 50% depth of discharge, they could last for a decade. These two batteries will provide you with 100AH of overnight power, and enough cranking amps to start the genset in the morning. They will take twice as long to charge up as your current setup.
For $500, you could buy a single carbon foam, group31, 100AH battery that will give you 60-70 usable amp hours, will start the genset, but will charge much, much faster than your current setup or the setup I recommended above, provided that your charge controller has a faster charging mode. The manufacturer claims that these batteries last much longer than traditional AGM deep cycle batteries, but these are so new that I haven't seen any reliable, non manufacturer data to back that claim up. The manufacturer, Firefly, does sell high quality Lithium batteries, so I would be surprised if they fibbed on their claims to the point of harming their reputation. Two would get you to the point of having enough power to run the heater over night and should still charge much faster than the single AGM you have now.
$1,000 will get you one lithium (LiFePo4), rv/boat, group 31, 100AH battery that you can discharge 95% without harming the battery. These charge extremely fast, but you'll need a special charge controller to take advantage of the increased charging rate, which will add on to the cost. As you eluded to in the video, lithium doesn't have as many cranking amps as the setup you currently have, so pay attention to that. Two of these will almost assuredly provide enough cranking amps to start the genset, provide twice the usable power of the $400 option I listed above, and still charge much faster than your current setup, but that's pricey.
I would stay away from a single deep cycle Group 31 since you have seen your current battery discharge fully just from running the blower on the heater. It should be clear that 50 usable AH is not nearly enough for that setup. Remember, you might need a better charge controller if you upgrade to the carbon foam, and you will most definitely need a new charge controller for the lithium.

Tucker, I enjoyed the tour of your Toy Hauler/Trailer Mobile very much, I think it is very nice, I think that I would add a second battery to it and I think that would be fine for you with having the generator.
I think since it's pre wired for solar, I think you should definitely invest in doing that since you will most likely be boon docking a lot and then you will not have to use your generator so much.

    @SmittySmithsonite 3 роки тому +2

Great tour, man! That thing is pretty sweet!
Based on my experience with lithium batteries on a dirt bike converted to dual-sport, I'd steer clear of them. Once the voltage falls below a certain level, your very expensive battery becomes a unrecoverable paperweight. This is exactly what tends to happen in a deep cycle application. They might have technology now that prevents that from happening, but that means the lights go out instantly, until you recharge it. They definitely have more capacity, but not sure that trade off is worth it. I personally think you'd be better off with multiple tried-and-true deep cycle lead-acid batteries.
I have to call out the salesman on that generator starting, though - extended and multiple cranking events shouldn't be necessary for a well tuned generator. Fuel must be bleeding back to the tank when it shouldn't be. Sounds like it may have been built that way. If so, shame on that company! I suppose a check valve in the fuel line would work - the key is finding one that won't fail with extended periods of sitting over the winter. That thing should light right off in just a few seconds of cranking. Anyway ... I appreciate the tour, Tucker!

I also have to correct you on the fact that your hot water tank will not operate off your battery. It is 110 v or propane the only thing that uses 12v is the igniter to light the propane and to open the gas valve.

Tucker, May I suggest a BIG BUDDY heater for the bed room / Bath room... no power needed for the fan to drain the battery, then you could place a 270 watt solar panel on the roof, and keep the battery fully charged and still use it to upload video and computer use... since you have compartments for the bed room / bath room and the back you can move the BIG buddy heater to the back as you need... Minimalist I agree is the best way to go....Just one thing... Where does Jaqueline sit???

Even just a pair of golf cart batteries on the tongue would be a huge improvement over what you have now. The factory battery setups on most rv's is extremely limited and rv furnaces use quite a bit of power. A pair of golf carts from costco or sam's plus a few 100 watts of solar would probably cover most of your electrical needs given you can run power hungry devices off the generator and would require minimal modification to the rv and be relatively cheap. If you are willing to cut a vent hole you have the weight capacity on that toy hauler to carry a lot of lead. 2 or 3 sets of golf cattery batteries would give you a good amount of power for running laptops and even heavy but short term loads like your espresso machine or the microwave without having to start the generator. One thing to keep in mind is the limitation of the factory solar prep. If it came with a solar charge controller it will likely be a pwm unit that can handle maybe 30 amps at most which is pretty limiting and not very efficient. You also need to see what gauge of wire was run to your roof and make sure your not overloading it if you go buck wild with solar.
If you go with lithium keep in mind you don't have to start the generator from it. You could set it up with a small dedicated lead acid starting battery.
Edit: another thing to consider is getting an olympian wave catalytic heater. They are popular with rvers because they don't run down your batteries and use less propane. Just keep it mind you will have to crack a window to let in fresh air and vent the moisture and co2 from the propane.

Dude you will destroy your battery very quickly if you don't charge it to 100% every day. Never let it drop below 50%. You need 200ah minimum for off-grid which gives you 100ah usable power. 400W + of solar on the roof will make a huge difference. You'll only need the genny in bad weather and middle of winter.

Like a lot of other commenters, I would recommend looking into solar for sure. If it works well, that would probably solve a lot of battery issues. Also wonder if there is there a way to have the generator automatically kick on when the battery drains down to a certain level to charge the battery.

Those Battleborns are nice batteries but they are crazy expensive. Check out Will Prowse's channel on how you can build your own custom LiFEPo4 battery bank for about 25% of the cost of the Battleborns. You just need to add the BMS (about 100 bucks) and top balance the cells. If you add an MPPT combo box you get the inverter, charger, AC cutover and solar charge controller in one box. Here is an example: ua-cam.com/video/Dpzc2Qb6JRU/v-deo.html

Hi tucker, just to let you know that gray water is actually more harmful to the surroundings than black water is because gray water has chemicals from the sink and shower whereas black water only has human waste. Black water biodegrades reasonably quickly whereas gray water can seep into the ground and doesn't biodegrade as quick and it may taint a water source. Its also the reason that gray water is so much more difficult to treat than black water. You say it's only a slow drip so I don't think there is a problem but just so you know for future. Great video BTW.

Ya she makes good vids too..they're good folks. So glad they share their inspiration w/us. She might still be back home making the coffee @ the roastery☕😉👍..while Tucker is "working" his gig.. She did a quick vid on her job as a roaster, was cool.. it's an art and a science, I brew beer, so I understand her job is kinda like the process of roasting sprouted barley(malt).. HOW its roasted & blending recipes makes magical flavors and different styles happen!
I just bought a $200 slicer, I swear I'm gonna get some coffee from Black River Roastery(?)who she works for..honestly I'll probably spend all my $$ on the coffee.. want some of Tucker's shirts, but good coffee takes precedent..lol.. stimulus check coming🤔...☕😃

I have many years and many diff. RV and what you have is pretty ideal with a couple up grades. Two things are critical for your lifestyle, enough water and enough battery which you have discovered. You need at least two 6V deep cycle batteries with solar which is a must have. Your 100 gallons of water is great. That has always been a problem for me except in my 40 ft. RV. Your hot water heater and refrigerator are not designed to run off the battery, only when plugged to shore power. Generators are designed to run for long periods. When you start it (and yes, they don’t like cold starts) run it for a minimum 3 hours. Your battery will continually loose power over time if not brought to full charge each day. The solar will solve that problem. A small folding table (5 foot) will help your living situation. I think it could be stored overhead. You can use it outside or in as needed. I really like the forward bedroom and wish I had been able to have that when I had a Toyhauler. I carry a PPC buggy so your setup would have been perfect but I didn’t have the 250 truck to pull it, only an half ton.

#1)you have to be on solar... #2 ) AGM BATTS are great. You can hang the sob upside down. It doesn't matter. Way better than those golf cart trojan.
Well the real #1) get the frickin bike out of there. Why, other than hauling it around do you "ever" keep it inside. Come on,,, your smarter than that!!! It's got wheels, easy out,& in!! Now back to the batteries. Yes "'s".. get another just like it and put one of those, left, right, both, switches like on every frickin boat has. They are great. You want separate meter for each battery too. 2 roll-out or flex panels will work. Note you can't get a to big solar panel!! Tool time special,,, " more power".
You always, heat and cool from the propane tank. All other elc. needs, off the batteries.
I've lived off-grid for years in the northern CA. mountains. We are there, March to Nov. 8 miles to the nearest road... We have NO problem.. AGM are the best for that environment, trust me.

Hey Tucker, usually you can set your refrigerator to the automatic setting that way when the generator turns on its switch to electric and when the generator shutsoff it will switch back to propane. That way the refrigerator will always stay on.

Cheapest thing you can do is get at least one 100 watt panel. That should get you enough power most of the time. If you can find a 100 watt amorphous panel go with that. It takes up more space than a crystalline panel for the same wattage, but it does better in cloudy conditions. Harbor freight has a kit with a shitty charge controller, but it works out of the box and can be broken down and set up in minutes.
With lithium, you need to pay attention to its chemistry first: LiFePO4 is what you want. Next pay attention to its AH rating and its continuous discharge rate, and lastly it's max pulse rating. 100 AH battery with a 3C discharge means that you can pull 300 amps continuously. If it's pulse rating is 10C you can draw 1000 amps for up to 10 seconds. Both are enough to crank up a generator.
With lithium you need to pay close attention to how much voltage you charge with - specifically if you are trying to charge off your alternator while towing. You might need to look into a lithium specific charger/converter. These are usually chemistry specific since different chems have different max voltages at the cell level. 3.7 vs 4.2 (14.8 or 16.8 for a 12v as an example). Over volting lithium can be dangerous so DO NOT overlook this.
With your AGM battery your usable capacity is half its AH rating. Discharging below 50% will damage its capacity and lower it pretty quickly. LiFePO4 can be discharged 100%, but leaving 20% in the tank is generally recommended to prolong the life of the battery.
Apologies for the wall of text, but I hope it's informative.

From decades of RV and boat experience let me save you some time..
Just get the solar panel (you should only need one high efficiency panel) if its prewired and you intend on boondocking. For batteries, get two (or 4 if you can fit them) 6volt cart batteries from a common car part store. That way you can get a replacement on the road if you need it. They are designed to run down and charge more often than 12v batteries unless you buy a sailboat battery like an 8D. May also have to buy a better battery charger depending on what you have. Cheap chargers will ruin a battery fast, and the best ones will phase down the charge as they fill up and then pulse the plates to keep the battery at peak performance. While you are redoing the battery wiring is the time to decide if you want an inverter to run a few 120v circuits. You could run the entire rv with a decent one and a couple 6v batteries, just not the microwave or AC For those you will need to start the genset. They make inverter chargers together and they typically have a good charger meant for deep cycle batteries. You can also wire in a separate battery for the generator so you should never have to jump it. Some RV's also have a "boost" button that connect house to genset battery when the generator battery is dead.
Get some duct tape (think I told you this before) for the leak or some self sealing pipe wrap. While you are at it buy a replacement gate valve ofr black and grey dump. they will go bad when you are the farthest away from a rv store that you can get..
The genset should run after about 4-10 sec of cranking. if its not then the choke is probably bad or the generator needs a service. Depending on how many hours are on it. Also bad gas (the ethanol in modern gas) left in the carb will gum it up when it dries out in the float bowl. I have had to replace a choke on an onan for the same issue..
Black tank gauges almost never work. Paper gets stuck on the sensor. Best method is to eyeball the level when you flush. Every RV owner learns this eventually.
The fridge should have a gas switch and default back to electric when the power is on?
RV locks suck so that door lock upgrade is probably worth it but remember to change batteries and put a hide a key somewhere.
Also just an FYI if you plan on keeping it more than 4-5 years keep it covered when your not using it. it will save years on the roof. They typically can last 10 years but can leak after 4-5 if they ae left out in the weather.
Toyhaulers usually have a class 3 hitch on the back. Get a harbor freight rack for the hitch to store gas/cooler/paramoters. I think they have an aluminum one that will be easy to remove once you are parked to let the ramp down.
Get a 1/2 cordless impact gun with the correct socket to make lowering your jacks a 1 min operation..
If you plan on campground stays in the winter get a heated fresh water hose. Hot water pipe insulation works to a point but below 20-25f the hose will freeze and burst. Also when your in a campground dont leave the black water valve open, especially in winter. All the liquid will drain out and the solid will clump up and clog the system. Wait till its 1/2 to full then dump it and flush it. Grey you can leave open if the weather is warm. If its cold trickling water will freeze in the sewer hose.
I have had everything wrong that could go wrong to a rv and toyhauler (well probably) including a mouse crawled into my furnace from the vent pipe. When the fan turned on it destroyed the fan. That took 3 weeks to get the part in the middle of winter when my whole family were temporarily living in the toyhauler after a move. If you can manage it, and you cant manage down time, 2 of everything is the way to go..
