- I Took my wife on her first proper Wild Camp in Dartmoor National park in terrible weather conditions.
We struggled to hike on high ground so we stayed low, but even so the Wind and Rain made it tough going.
My wife stayed positive throughout and we had a great time together even dealing with a mini flash flood that made us have to move the location of our OEX Husky III tent didn't dampen our spirits.
we ate British Army rations and enjoyed the beautiful scenery Dartmoor has to offer.
We can't wait to return.

There was something really enjoyable about this video, not that the others are not - most likely that you were both exploring, learning, enjoying some time out in nature together and as you say building memories. Good to see you in a different environment to the usual - I wonder if a new angle to your outdoor life is opening up. Cheers folks.
Thanks for that awesome comment, we had such a great time, I think the weather helped in that regard, as it was Carly's first real wild camp. i thought she coped with it all wonderfully.

I seem to remember the weather was similar the one and only time you've been out on the moor with me 'Dorset Piper'.....can't imagine why you haven't been back ;)

Brilliant. You two together are natural for the camera, you never got flustered or self conscious, and you made the whole thing fun to watch. Even though you did pitch "a la riverside" then had to move, you still laughed about it. Well done Carly, and you too Dan. Yeah, I love it when she comes along. It doesn’t happen too often what with child care and stuff but when it does it’s so much fun.

Thank you both for the video! I think the adventure was very well accomplished, including the impromptu tent move. A stark but pretty place indeed. I've never had the opportunity to travel to England but thanks to lots of video material one at least gets a taste of the beauty and variety. I've always loved rain on a tent or tarp and as long as you can manage to keep warm it's a lot of fun.Looks as though you have good gear. I gather your beautiful dog had the good sense to stay at home...lol. I've watched a number of your videos but somehow missed this one. Thanks again!
Thanks Frank, yes, this was an adventure.. it was my wife first trip with me and I promised her a good time, she's a good sport though and we had a blast.
I was always conscience of the dangers but it was a good laugh in the end and a very happy memory for us both.
and yes, Tink was spoiled rotten by my mother in law while we were away.

Great to see a couple out on the moor in bad weather and keeping positive. And the wife did especially well for a first wild camp a real baptism of fire...well rain.
Often, with a few exceptions, best to camp on a tor. The grass is generally short, flat spots plentiful and the tor can provide shelter from the wind.
If you're ever in the area again I'd be more than happy to come out with you, maybe even drag Dorset Piper along too :)

I had decided to stay down in the valley because of the wind, but once we got up on the tor in the morning I did regret not camping up there. lessons being learned every day : )
Your not the only one caught out by the flood planes of Dartmoor. I have watched someone who goes on every month give up due to encroaching water.
Heck I have woken to having a moat around my tent on a Welsh campsite. All good fun if you stay dry and safe inside the tent.
yeah, this was good fun, but I was aware that it could get serious very quickly.
there was a cut off point in my head for bugging out before dark, but as we moved to high ground successfully and kept our dry clothes and bedding dry it stayed good fun.
Dang... anyone can stay in a 4 star Hotel... this separates the "men from the boys" for sure. Thanks for taking us along.

Just came across your video, watched it and loved every minute of it, the reason why? Because two people made the best of really poor weather conditions, moved a tent in pouring rain, and still laughed. Well done both of you, many would have bailed and ran for their cars or started to stress at each other. You make a good couple. Atb Bill. (oh forgot to add the gas spluttering was probably due to the cold, just stick it in your pocket or sleeping bag for about half an hour and it will be fine).

this was my wifes first wild camp and after this I'm pretty sure she can handle anything!

What a fabulous video you two. A great team and very entertaining. It made us smile throughout. Just loved the suspense with the water rising and the silent morning chorus in your sleeping bag Dan had me in stitches. And Carley's delayed reaction was classic. So so funny. My hubby Richard has been watching with me for the last 3 weeks and is now a fan and has even agreed to do a wild camp with me. Although I think we will wait for better weather hehe. but yes, getting wet in the night would have been nasty, it was amazing how quick it appeared, and the vanished again.
that was my first visit to Dartmoor, but certainly not my last. I loved it.

it was so much fun, I think the weather made it what it was.. positive attitude in survival situations and all that.

I camped at oke tor very nearly at the spot u suggested, in high winds and rain., had planned on camping further down the valley than you did but river had burst banks.
Think I've said before great to see the real challenges of wild camping.

How amazing to take your wife for a camping trip in those conditions and she was so game, never complaining (even though she didn't even have walking boots!). Your marriage will survive anything! Neither of you were put off by the dreadful weather and made the most of it. Can't understand you nutters though walking around bare foot!
unfortunately because of child care and dog sitting we get what we get with weather as it takes time to arrange for us both to get out... we had been really looking forward to this one and were not willing to cancel, Carly was probably more keen than me!

We did have fun, it was great to be out just the 2 of us.. the weather was a bit shocking but it just added to the adventure.
I'm hoping Carly will come out again before the year is over, although she is not a fan of the cold : )
the dogs had a little holiday, stayed with my parents who have dogs too, so they had fun as well.

I like the idea of camping but to be honest I've been cold wet and miserable more times than I care to remember. The thing that really gets me down about it is I don't sleep well at night ever. Lying in a tent at night wide awake is the most boring thing known to man or woman.
Great video camping on Dartmoor with you and your wife, I'm going camping on Dartmoor in 2 weeks can you recommend any were my first time on Dartmoor going for 4 days, enjoyed your amazing video I'm taking my mate's.
we parked at Belstone, its a safe place to leave the car and a good starting point.

Where did you get the gas canister. at 48.40.You said it was empty earlier. btw your wife has a great outlook. most would be really Peed off in that weather. Here a tip for you, if you want waterproof stuff to wear, buy motorcycle waterproofs.
It wasn’t empty, it was just cold I think.
Yeah she is a lot of fun.. we’d had it arranged for ages, babysitters and dog etc so we were determined not to miss out.

Her carry weight , that ground and a pair of trainers Is a disaster waiting to happen. Also keep away from water in wet weather .Think about how water runs . And pitch away from it
