Martin's official new update regarding the release date for the Winds of Winter. He said, "When WINDS OF WINTER is done, the word will not trickle out, there WILL be a big announcement… where and when I cannot say."
He wanted to address all of the recent rumors surrounding its release. Unfortunately, Winds of Winter still isn't done...

Ironic. The subversion and destruction of hope, of anything having meaning or making sense or being anything other than flailing human vanity, is a huge theme in ASOIAF.
Perhaps what George is doing here is an extended piece of performance art to criticize the entire idea that a “heckin’ true artiste” must cater to the wishes of the masses who yearn to consumerishly devour the artiste’s material

As an author, respect goes both ways. He really doesn’t appreciate his fans if he makes them wait over a decade for the next book in his series. It's not like he's been sick or in a coma. He's been doing everything else except releasing the book his fans have been waiting patiently for. His professional priorities are messed up, and he's being a d!ck to his fans that have supported his work.
100%. I'm so disappointed in him and I've pretty much lost all the respect and reverence I once had for the man. This callous disregard for the fans who were his bread and butter long before HBO cam calling is utterly inexcusable. Shame on him.
He has hella characters about, different POVs to write from, and multiple families and plots to write about and keep straight. You try to do it yourself.

It's not a choice. He's old and fat. I don't say that to be mean. It's just the truth. It's not like he's doing nothing tho. He's working on tv shows and appearances. I think the ending of GoT killed his motivation. That was his intended ending. They just didn't execute it properly. Everyone hated it. I don't think he's being a dick. I just think he doesn't have it anymore.
I think he should hire a team of ghost writers. He would oversee everything of course. But I don't think his ego will let him do that. I think he's also fearful that the book is a disappointment. If it's not a masterpiece, fans will destroy him for it.

Agree, so many chapters were complete in 2012/13. I've never written a book but I assume it should not take 13 years to write. He just doesn't seem interested in finishing since the show has already done it. Maybe he just lost the passion

George had nothing to do with it this time, and trust me I remember how he lied to the Fandom about WoW release date before, page completion testimonies not adding up, ect. So I don't believe anything the man says anymore, but he's not at fault for this, this was the coping fans fault and everyone should have sufficient proof well before now not to get hyped at anything that not an official announcement.
I heard loads of people claiming the a dragon cake he’d supposedly bought was to celebrate the release of TWOW. To me, it sounded like if he was celebrating anything, it was HOTD S2. It’s absolutely ludicrous to presume that a mere cake, dragon or not, signals the publication of TWOW. It’s just a cake.

5 years ago i was convinced this book would have been released with in a year or two after GoT ended............
After GOT ended I was convinced that we would never see another book.
George and his fans are the epitome of a love hate relationship, he had enthralled us all into this world we care so much about, I personally have read the books well over 10 times a piece and have watched the show over 20 times(except s8) and I’ve loved every second of it, but waiting for these book and getting my hopes up for it is brutal, and part of me would prefer to have never gotten involved with it at all, rather than going so and him never finishing it, it’s unrealistic at this point, but I still hold out hope, just finish the god damn books George
Doesn't really matter, he's very old and the books will be finished by a designated writer after he passes, with help of his notes. Tons of precedents for this.

@@gts2550Curiously enough, destroying the unpublished writings of authors after their death isn’t frequently done. Their writing is usually considered too valuable and will often be preserved and/or published. This is often going directly against the author’s explicit directive to have their writing either destroyed or kept from the public eye.
Not saying that will (or won’t) be the case for GRRM. It ultimately depends on who has access to his unpublished works after he passes. Unless he decides to destroy (or seal away) it all while he’s alive, we (including GRRM himself) cannot be certain what will become of his yet-published writing.
You need to let go and live your life. ASoIaF will never be finished, at least not by George. And who knows if it'll be finished by someone else, in what conditions and when.
I want to read the books, but I’m afraid that I won’t get to read the last two books. Because even if he does somehow managed to release wins of winter, what about a dream of spring?
That's my issue too. I really want to know the real story. The ending for the TV Show was hot garbage, not satisfying.

Game of Thrones killed ASOIAF. I think the show overtaking the books killed his enthusiasm, and the absolute disaster of S8 killed his confidence. D&D did take *some* guidance from Martin and while his ideas would no doubt be executed better (for example I think Danaerys burning King's Landing is already foreshadowed), but the fan backlash is making him second guess himself.

Yep, knowing that the audience hates Daenerys turning evil, Bran becoming king, Sansa becoming queen in the north, Jon getting exiled again, Jon’s lineage didn’t matter, Jaime didn’t kill Cersei,…would have put Martin in one hell of a rewrite.

It appears to me that he just likes to eat and travel. And secretly likes to see any of his writings get adapted into a TV show because he was neglected earlier in his life. For that, he is ready to write new material.
But why has he left the people hanging? He should just admit that he won't be able finish WoW and put people out of their misery so that they can make peace and move on.

We might get Winds of Winter but I long ago accepted we will never get Dream of Spring, at least not written by George. I imagine he will have some kind of deal worked out were someone will finish the story after his death, someone who he probably will leave a rough out line on his vision for the ending of A Song of Ice and Fire!

So...the announcement about "The Winds of Winter" is...there is no announcement. He talked a lot about....nothing.
The fact that it took him a month to respond to all the fan theories going around means he's either messing with us and going to announce something at WorldCon or he's going to take Winds of Winter with him to the grave. I'll wait until after the Convention to feel angry.
This story will never be finished. The show finishing the story took the passion from him. He can’t write anything like what the show did or he’ll be accused of laziness and following the shows vision. He’d have to go in a completely different direction than the show to feel as if it’s his story and his alone. The problem is some of the shows vision likely came from talks with him.
Sometimes I think he already finished Winds of Winter and is finishing A Dream of Spring and he will release them both at the same time. 😊
He created all these fantastical lores and stories and I’m very convinced he’s unable to create a sensible coherent ending. He just got caught up in writing that he can’t finish. Occam’s razor.

Tbh this should have been obvious. I can’t remember where I heard but apparently the Dunk and Egg novellas are the ones he is most passionate about and his personal favourite. In fact, based on that, I’d say he likes Dunk and egg more than the the ASOIF.
If that’s true his full focus will be on that show for years. Even in this video, from the moves he is pulling in the beginning, it’s obvious he is going to be way more involved in the Dunk and Egg show. Pulling out the writers room for HOTD season 3 so he can roll (literally) into the Dunk and Egg writers room.
And yet, he also hasn't finished Dunk and Egg LOL. The last one was 7 years ago.
He says he'll write more Dunc and Egg once he finishes Winds of Winter.

My boyfriend got me listening to the audiobook. And I got him watching HOTD (I don’t have the heart to show him GOT with season 8 being the way it is)
@@sillygo0oser Steven Pacey does the audiobooks and he’s the best narrator I’ve listened to. His voices are so distinct you know which character is talking the second they speak.

He never wanted to be an Author forever. He wanted to be a TV writer. He achieved his goal is all
This could very well be delusion, but...
I read his post not so much as silencing our hope that TWOW is releasing, but moreso to silence the specific assumption on the nature of anytime he meets with his publishers. Making it clear that it's not always to discuss book publishing plans.
On top of that he states "when WINDS OF WINTER is done, the word will not trickle out, there WILL be a big announcement… where and when I cannot say."
I also read this as him not specifically saying "I cannot say/don't have a clear answer when TWOW is coming out." He's moreso stating that he isn't entirely sure WHERE and when TWOW will be ANNOUNCED. The "where" is important in this - as he leads with the where. It's also important to note that in the very same blog post, he talks about his tireless efforts to be a panelist at this year's WorldCon. Since that has proven fruitless for him, perhaps his intended plans to announce TWOW at WorldCon has been squashed and now he is searching/pondering for an alternative place and time to do so. A place and time that is not yet clear to him, in which he "cannot say."
Thing still is... in his most recent blog post, he shows off new cover arts for the first five books, as well as a collection set for them five to release in october.
Why would anybody buy a collection set that is not including The Winds of Winter, if The Winds of Winter had to release ?

Like, won't it hurt the sales of this collection if it does not even include the final book releasing almost at the same time ? If you want your ASOIAF collection, you pretty much want all the released books to be inside of it. But Winds would not be in it. And at the contrary, wouldn't it boost the sales of such a collection if it included the freshly released new book ?
That's why I'm wondering, because if it was actually releasing anytime soon, why wouldn't he instead sell a collection with all 6 books on its release ?

I think he wants to enjoy his life and success instead of going full hermit writing these books. He already gave the end with the tv show.
You never know how much time you have left. New experiences, traveling, fine dinning and spending a little bit of those coins you can't take with you..
And it’s probably because the show’s ending was what he originally intended but since he saw how much backlash it received, he had to rewrite the whole thing and made a new satisfactory conclusion, which is an extremely hard thing to do considering how many plotlines he has now.

I feel like after the show, he is done with his story telling of those particular events. But he doesn't have the guts to admit that to his readers. And I can totally understand why someone won't feel any creativity or be able to write a story that's already been told

I think after the shows conclusion he reflected hard and was dismayed that the audience disliked it so much. He’s said in numerous interviews that he shared his vision with the writers on how it would end. My guess is they for the most part wrote his ending and now Martin has been taking time to adjust plans. It explains the huge amount of time he’s needed. I’m sure what he writes even if it’s the same, will be much more out together than the anti climactic ending of the show
The thing is that I think most fans would accept the current shows ending it it had more time and thought put in to it.
I didn’t hate the mad queen ending, I hated that it was riddled with month long time skips and lacked any real build up before the release.
All he has to do is expand on it and show the events and clues leading up to the change in Dany and it wouldn’t be nearly as bad as the show portrayed it.
The worst of all is knowing that after this (WoW) there will still be another book 😵💫

My only hope is that a lot of the dragged out writing is to ensure that the main and subplots all tie in with the conclusions and wrap ups for each plot and arch that ADOS will focus on. So that once TWOW is finished that the ouline for ADOS is fairly settled on and the writing goes quick like the old books. Just me being optimistic though.
I think that is his biggest problem with writing. He doesn't know how to tie all the plots and subplots together and have it still make sense lol.

@@habitak7989 Why not? The fandom cheered the show on until season 8. Even to this day, most people act as if the series only fell off in the last season and not at the halfway point.

I honestly think the backlash season 8 had is preventing him from finishing it
worst case scenario and we never get the remaining books, I hope we at least get a video, or a first hand/point-form breakdown of how the story is to end, in George's mind.
He gave us the end of game of thrones with the tv show. We are delusional by not accepting it and moving on.
He is clearly not interested anymore by that. He wants to enjoy the time he has left and help bring to tv his previous work. It's his main focus.
There is no way a guy is going to spend the few years he has left in hermitage writing instead of enjoying his late found success.

I still think he won’t release anything until he passes he knows how crazy fans are and even if he pulls off the greatest ending people are still going to manage to btch about something.
That would make him a true scumbag, if he had a book and couldn't be bothered to release it regardless of what his fans, the people who fund his life, and his publishers, have been promised.

Remember when we all thought Covid lockdowns would make him finish the books? Those were the days.
We are convinced he's finished but has been recommended to wait to keep fan interest high for the other 7 projects he's got going on. Even talks of eldenring series coming which will require his input.

I know it's been said many a time before, but I feel HORRIBLE for the people who've been following this series from the beginning and have since passed before knowing how ASOIAF ends ... an eternal cliffhanger.
The series is very large in scope, no sane man could deny that. But thirteen bloody years!?
At this point the only hope for this Series I still hold onto, is for him to announce Winds of Winter will be the last Book after all, not the second to last
