Airplane! Is a shot-for-shot remake/spoof of the 1957 film, “Zero Hour!”. Right down to the “would you like a cup of coffee” scene (with slightly different dialogue!) It is uncanny that they took a serious movie and turned it into a hilarious shot-for-shot remake. Classic.
When the Doctor is giving Ted the pep talk about George Zipp -- this is a direct reference to the 1940s movie "Knute Rockne, All American" in which Ronald Reagan played a Notre Dame football player named George Gipp who in one scene is dying in a hospital bed. He tells his coach to tell the rest of the team to "win one for the Gipper," and the Doctor's speech is pretty much word-for-word from that scene. Also, the music playing when Striker gets up and says "I've got a plane to land" is the Notre Dame fight song.
"This movie is so theater of the absurd! Play on words, sight gags, and commercial and mo ie references!! Put Ham on 5 and hold the Mayo"...the doc was calling from the Mayo Clunic.
To be fair I don't think the common person will know the difference.... I mean we'll probably tell the difference in a crop duster in comparison to a jumbo plane that's it. I've never flown never stepped foot inside an airport and I just made 30 the closest I've come to a plane is Grand Theft Auto LOL. I've seen this film countless times and I never knew that.
They even miss that "Ted" is a WWII fighter pilot with PTSD which is not possible given his age. But when you realize that it's basically a shot for shot comedic remake of "Zero Hour", then it all makes sense.
“And stop calling me Shirley” OMFG! The best line to my taste. It’s so stupid that’s funny. I’m going through a terrible time that I really need you to keep your promise and take care of me. My mom died, my Guinea Pig died. Thank you for making me laugh. Love, Lu
Rex Kramer was breaking bad there without any reason. There is another Rex Kramer who was introduced by the Zucker brothers in "Kenntucky Fried movie". He had a hilarious one liner in the movie, which all the Karens in the world would hate to see and hear

The movie came out in August or September of 1980. In October of 1983 we finally got cable in the Saint Louis area. My friend got his installed before we got ours and I went over to his house to watch movies while our parents were at bingo together. "AIRPLANE" was one we watched. This was at the height of the TYLENOL tampering scare. When Johnny described the plane as "white with red stripes, it look's like a great big TYLENOL!!!" my friend and I turned to look at each other, we both paused for a few beats, then we ROARED with laughter. No one could have imagined when the movie was made that in three years a single joke would take on extra meaning.
Robert Stack owned one of my paintings he even sent me Polaroids of it in his house with notes written in the margins. Finally got to meet him at a celebrity event in Nashville TN he was a great guy to hang out with.
The guy who commits Seppuku is James Hong , who is in a TON of stuff - including being Lo Pan in "Big Trouble In Little China". And Po's dad in "Kung Fu Panda" for younger folks.
The problem with parodies is that they are really hard to do right. With a parody you don't deliver the joke the way you would in a normal movie. Parody has to be deadpan and serious in the delivery. That's why this movie is so great. Instead of using comedians that would have delivered the jokes the way a comedian would, they used serious dramatic actors who delivered their lines they way a serious actor does. That's why this works so well.
@@RichardX1 This whole movie is full of little "ha ha" gags, but there are a few places that are laugh out loud hilarious. That was one of them for me. “I just want to tell you both good luck. We’re all counting on you.” What I love is, each time he says it, it kind of has an alternate meaning. At first it’s just saying everyone is counting on Ted to land the plane, but later it can also be wishing them good luck as a couple.

@@togroglog2457 you might be right. Unfortunately mine always made it obvious. I vividly remember having to go “under the blanket” during movie nights when certain scenes came on lol. 4:01 -- those were two of the writers and directors of the movie. 10:58 -- you never drink during THAT joke. I've seen this movie at least ten times, and I still don't drink during that joke. 15:33 -- Kareem had a game that night, so he thought it would be funny if he appeared in his gear, and the directors dug the idea.
I love how it’s a Jet plane but you can hear the hum of Propellers. Most people miss the final joke after the end credits. Airplaine! 2 is funny as well.
Also the train engine sound in the beginning when the plane takes of when they're parodying the clichè scene of the woman seeing her lover going away with the train.
After this masterpeice David and Jerry Zucker made "The Naked Gun" triology with Leslie Nielsen. Best movies ever. Ironically they are also responsible for Scary Movie 3 and 4 🤣. The last most recent comedy I enjoyed was actually 'Vacation'. It was funny.
I knew that the "black, like my men" line was coming, and I also knew at the same moment that Chris had a mouth full of liquid, so I completely anticipated Chris's choking.
The actors originally wanted to play it for laughs but the director insisted they play it totally straight which is really the genius behind the whole thing.

I saw this as a kid in the theater and then I didn't see it for years, and I just assumed it probably hadn't aged that well, and was probably really silly. Boy, was I wrong! And every reaction video for this proves it, and your guys' reactions were as great as any to watch! Congratulations on being "initiated"! :D
And the nun (who doesn't sing but gives her the guitar) is played by Maureen McGovern, who sang "The Morning After" from THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. So that scene is full of inside jokes.
Since this movie came out, I have probably watched it over 100 times, and I still laugh so hard every single time. There needs to be more movies like this, that are just for some good, mindless fun.
These jokes are so left field, I love this movie! Fun little airplane fact, they actually have a rule on airlines (not sure when it was implemented) that the cabin crew can't have the same meal in case of this exact scenario.
If you haven't seen any of the Naked Gun movies you should watch them, they're made by the same Zucker Brothers who made Airplane and starred Leslie Nielson (The Doctor in this)
Police Squad was a great series, a satire on 1960s cop shows. The general audience didn't get it though. So they went back to movies, putting out "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad".
@@Lensmaster1 yes, and thus they prominently said "in color" in the title screen. it ended up as a 6x30 minute mini series which i see as a followup to Airplane! and "Naked Gun" is its spinoff trilogy i liked the mini series a lot, but when some reactors watched them in a single run instead of as separate episodes, it became a bit annoyingly boring to see the repetitive jokes of 3 or 6 espisodes in a single sitting, while i couldn't wait to see the next episode when broadcast only once per week. That's probably also why they only did 6 episodes.
One of my favorite subtle jokes in the movie that most people miss is when we first see Rex Kramer and the dog is mauling the guy from the airport. He is checking his tie in the mirror and they cut away, when they come back, the mirror is gone and he is in the next room. He steps thru where the mirror used to be to leave. Brilliant set and camera work!
This movie is deep in the topical knowledge of the time. It is even funnier when you have the experience of having lived at the time. There's so much going on that many of us went to see it multiple times to catch all of the references. If you haven't done it yet, go straight to the 'Naked Gun' trilogy.
I'm glad you can still enjoy 90% of this film. There were some cultural references that enhanced the movie to many viewers when it came out in 1980. First the taxi passenger was a cameo by Howard Jarvis, a wealthy California leading proponent of Proposition 13, which had set a hard limit on property taxes. So there he was, known for his stinginess, sitting with the taxi meter running. And many adults would recognize the plane's captain, Peter Graves, as the friendly adult figure on two Saturday morning live action series, _Fury_ (horses) and _Sky King_ (small plane pilot). So to see this wholesome man asking the boy about seeing a grown man naked, or whether he likes gladiator movies, added a lot to the humor. Of course today, they could never get away with jokes like that on even a PG-13 movie. The last I'll mention is Barbara Billingsley, the white wholesome mother on _Leave It to Beaver_ is the lady who talked jive with the black guys.
You have to watch this movie several times. Every time you'll see something new. And I just want to tell you both, good luck. We're all counting on ya.
Oh, totally true for me too. I was a kid when this movie was out so a lot jokes went over my head. But seeing it again and again, something new always pops up. This and blazing saddles. Lol!
i had it seen as a movie at least a dozen times, and now again a few dozen times in reactions on youtube, but sometimes i still find something new, like the name of the disco radio station (when the plane hits its antenna) : WZAZ and just now i saw the people going through the door at 2:56 ... are they from the original series of Battlestar Galactica ?
My favorite scene in that Movie is with the two black men! In the Englisch Original they speak jive and in the german version they speak bavarian! I got that Movie on Blu Ray in my Collection!
funniest movie ever made, more jokes per minute than any other film. TWO jokes missed by most people, 1 all the places Striker says in his stories are names of alcoholic drinks and the exterior plane shots have a prop engine sound
One visual joke that escaped me at first was the sh*t hitting the fan - because English is not my native language. Surely many of the puns got lost in translation. (And don't call me Shirley...)
having seen this movie like a 100 times, seeing you drink before the "like my man" line, i thought we would get an actual spit take, but a choke take is just as good
I've seen this movie at least 50 times and just caught a joke that never registered before. When they're all lining up to beat the hysterical woman someone says "you're wanted on the phone." LOL . . . this was long before cell phones. As if you could get to a landline on an airplane.
It's actually really nice no one reacting to this movie gets that Johnny is a gay parody; we've come far enough that the stereotypes don't even read for audiences anymore, he's just weird.
Almost forgot to mention there is a world renowned hospital in my home state of Minnesota called the Mayo Clinic, so the joke works on several levels, as does just about every joke in this movie. As for the guy in the taxi, there is an end credit scene where he looks at his watch and says , "I'll give him 20 more minutes, but that's it"
Do "Top Secret!" and "Hot Shots." They're both really similar to this movie as far as the humor goes. The first one is a parody of WWII/Spy movies and the second a parody of "Top Gun." I think the more recent movies that tried to do this kind of humor ended up fucking up the writing because many of the jokes stopped being jokes and became references to something else and that was it. Instead of some clever wordplay or setup, it's just "Oh, look at Jack Sparrow pop up for no reason because when this movie was made his movies were really popular" and crap like that. The genius of "Airplane!" is not only the writing, but the fact that they deliberately mostly hired actors who weren't comedians and told them to play the movie completely straight, which only added to the absurdity. I remember being a kid and watching this for the first time and being really surprised at the pilot who does the Ham On Rye Hold The Mayo joke and the inappropriate creepy questions to the kid during the flight, because previous to this I knew him as the hero for the original "Mission: Impossible" TV show.
Ohhh Man, I laughed my ass off watching you trying to drink, right when one of the best lines in the movie is coming; "Cream?" "No thank you, I take it black; like my men." Aww wow saw it coming the whole time, going; NOOOOOO don't drink NOW!!! This movie has so many gags, that you can watch it a 100 times and still catch jokes you missed before. You didn't have the scene in your reaction, but the old lady who translates the jive talk for the stewardess is Barbara Billingsly, who is most famous for playing June Cleaver on the classic tv show Leave it to Beaver. She was the gold standard for suburban mom's back in the day. So her knowing how to speak jive with the brothers, is like the Dave Chappelle show sketch with Wayne Brady. Which if you haven't seen that and or don't know who Wayne Brady is I highly recommend checking out the sketch after you know who he is!!! A few more parodies to add to the list, Airplane 2, which while not as good as the first is still hilarious. The Top Gun parody, Hot Shots and it's sequel Hot Shots Part Deux which parodies Rambo's 2&3. Balls of Fury is a parody of Bruce Lee's iconic Enter the Dragon. Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer and Kung Pow: Enter the Fist are hilarious Kung Fu parodies I know you'll love. Also while not a true parody, Army of Darkness is so much different from the other Evil Dead movies it might as well be a parody! And Lastly Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are amazing.
I loved this movie! I was in high school when it came out. It is filled with a lot of parodies on popular tv commercials that were big back then and movies that made it even more hilarious! 😂😂😂😂😂
Yes the lady with the sick husband was from the 70s Yuban coffee Commercial wondering why her husband doesn't drink a second cup at home but outside he is eager to have a second one.
Airplane is a parody of a 1950s movie called Zero Hour and the 1970s series of airplane disaster movies. The first of that series was Airport. The 70s was full disaster movies: Earthquake, the Towering Inferno and Airport. Each had a plethora of major stars. Airplane does too: Lloyd Bridges (dramatic actor), Robert Stack (dramatic actor, hosted Unsolved Mysteries), Leslie Nielsen (comedic actor, later played in Naked Gun), Peter Graves (dramatic actor, was in the original Mission Impossible TV show) and Kareem Abdul Jabar (basketball legend).
Just for context, there really is a healthcare facility called The Mayo Clinic... We even have one in the UK You should check out the likes of Airplane 2, the Naked Gun Trilogy, and Top Secret... all brilliant films with the same kind of humour found here.
Robert Hays (the one who piloted the plane to safety in the end, kind of) was so ridiculously funny in this. He had me laughing so hard. He also sort of made fun of his character in this film in "Sharknado 2" in the intro. The last really funny movie I saw was "Ted"" which was released in 2012. That movie is so freaking hilarious.
Easily the best thing I've ever seen during a reaction. That spit take happening after the anticipation of the, "I take it black .. like my men" line was priceless.
This movie is such a classic - so glad to see someone react to it. There are so many things in it that, if someone tried to make the same movie today, everyone involved with the production would be canceled - careers over. And it's hysterically funny, because people didn't take themselves so seriously back then. Sometimes, life is just so stupid you have to make fun of it. You guys would like I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.
Ah yes, the hilariously subtle irony of a guy dying during the song "Staying Alive". :D I didn't even get that till just now and I've seen this movie dozens of times.
The guy in the taxi is still there after the credits. In real life, he was tax resister Howard Jarvis who helped Proposition 13 pass in California. He was the author of the book "I'm Mad as Hell" from 1979. The Zucker Brothers probably hired him to do this cameo because they sympathized with his politics.
I grew up with this movie and still crack jokes in homage to AIRPLANE. When my friends and I were just in our teens We did Super 8 skits in homage to this movie...one time we had set up a pool side cafe where two people are having a conversation as kids were playing basketball behind them and overthrew their shots. The guys at the table gave their drink order (one asked for coffee and one said he'll 'just have tea') and carried on their conversation when a basketball came into frame, bounced hard on their table and off between them---without flinching or stopping their talk, then their order came...coffee and a styrofoam letter'T'. That was in 1981...I still have that foam T. :)
Omg I love this movie!!! What made this even more legendary is that most of the actors weren’t comedians. They were all dramatic actors up to this point. I’ll still say that to my buddies: “Hey I was wondering, “you ever seen a grown man naked?” Lmao 😂
Speaking of sequels, you should watch this film's appropriately-titled sequel, "Airplane II: The Sequel". Written and directed by someone totally different, it's still a fine parody flick with returning stars.
It was a spoof of an old 1950's movie called "Zero Hour" where the pilots all eat the bad meal. The co-pilot was played by a famous football player, which set up the Kareem bit. These were famous drama and action actors, suddenly in a comedy. LLoyd Bridges did lots of action shows, especially the Sea Hunt series where he was always getting in underwater scuba fights. Really.
And Peter Graves was famous in the two tv series "Mission Impossible" (one at the end of 60s to start of 70s, the revival at the end of the 80s) where he played the main character Jim Phelps. btw: when looking this up, i just found out that he also had a famous brother, James Arness (Marshall Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke). Real surname of both was Aurness.

what about the director's themselves ? i read that they are the guys who misdirected the plane to crash through the big window !?
No matter how many times I watch this I laugh. It’s so fun to watch people experience this comic masterpiece for the first time.
I wish I could go back and watch it for the first time again, first time I saw it I was just a kid, so a lot of jokes went over my head...
@@MetalHeadReacts Me too. And I agree. I think I only laughed at some jokes because my parents were laughing. As an adult WOW even funnier.
@Chris McDowell Ronald Reagan also used "Win One For The Gipper" AS his political slogan when he was running for office.
"This movie is so theater of the absurd! Play on words, sight gags, and commercial and mo ie references!! Put Ham on 5 and hold the Mayo"...the doc was calling from the Mayo Clunic.
I kept wondering why they used the Notre Dame fight song, of all things. Thanks for the info!
Thank you for explaining that because I knew none of that
Leave it to beaver's mom serving as translater was one of the funniest parts for me.
There's no mistaking that Barbara Billingsley voice either
Speaking Jive😂😂😂😂 thank you Mrs. Cleaver!!!
Don’t know why they cut that part out of this video.
Everybody misses the propeller noise the plane makes through out the movie, the airplane has jet engines. That's the genius of these movies.
And when the young girl is chasing the plane it sounds like a steam train.
@@markreed392 yes because it was parodying that common trope in old romance movies. The amount of parody layers in this movie is ridiculous lol
Even as a kid I knew
It’s hilarious

They even miss that "Ted" is a WWII fighter pilot with PTSD which is not possible given his age. But when you realize that it's basically a shot for shot comedic remake of "Zero Hour", then it all makes sense.
“And stop calling me Shirley” OMFG! The best line to my taste. It’s so stupid that’s funny. I’m going through a terrible time that I really need you to keep your promise and take care of me. My mom died, my Guinea Pig died. Thank you for making me laugh.
Love, Lu
"No. That's just what they'll be expecting us to do" is the greatest line of the whole film. it cracks me up every time
Rex Kramer was breaking bad there without any reason. There is another Rex Kramer who was introduced by the Zucker brothers in "Kenntucky Fried movie". He had a hilarious one liner in the movie, which all the Karens in the world would hate to see and hear

You need to watch "Top Secret!", it's the hidden masterpiece by the same directors/writers. Val Kilmer's first major movie role and he kills it.

Go watch Top Secret! anyway... There's plenty of jokes in it that Anthony De Tie didn't ruin.)

This movie is why we had a joke shortage in the early 80s. They used them all!
“I just want to tell you both good luck. We’re all counting on you.”
What I love is, each time he says it, it kind of has an alternate meaning. At first it’s just saying everyone is counting on Ted to land the plane, but later it can also be wishing them good luck as a couple.
It is not, it's just a repetition joke, it's absurd humour.
When he was flying somewhere, Leslie Nielsen used to go up to the cockpit and do this line sometimes.
They use that same joke in Scary movie 3.
Robert Hays who played Ted Striker is actually a pilot in real life and is qualified to fly multi-engine aircraft..

And they put some jokes in the closing credits...
Also the train engine sound in the beginning when the plane takes of when they're parodying the clichè scene of the woman seeing her lover going away with the train.
Airplane 2 wasn’t as good because none of the original writers had any part and it was mostly rehashing the jokes of this one.

These jokes are so left field, I love this movie! Fun little airplane fact, they actually have a rule on airlines (not sure when it was implemented) that the cabin crew can't have the same meal in case of this exact scenario.
Airplane is a shot for shot remake of the movie Zero Hour - an insignificant old B movie. The rule was brought in because of that movie.
Leslie Nielsen's first comedic role. The world will miss him.
If you haven't seen any of the Naked Gun movies you should watch them, they're made by the same Zucker Brothers who made Airplane and starred Leslie Nielson (The Doctor in this)
Even better is the Police Squad series. They only made 5 or 6 episodes, but the jokes are just as rapid fire in it as this movie had.
Police Squad was a great series, a satire on 1960s cop shows. The general audience didn't get it though. So they went back to movies, putting out "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad".
@@Lensmaster1 yes, and thus they prominently said "in color" in the title screen.
it ended up as a 6x30 minute mini series which i see as a followup to Airplane! and "Naked Gun" is its spinoff trilogy
i liked the mini series a lot, but when some reactors watched them in a single run instead of as separate episodes, it became a bit annoyingly boring to see the repetitive jokes of 3 or 6 espisodes in a single sitting, while i couldn't wait to see the next episode when broadcast only once per week.
But Ethel Merman played Ethel Merman.
You have to watch this movie several times. Every time you'll see something new. And I just want to tell you both, good luck. We're all counting on ya.

Kareem Abdul Jabar is wearing goggles because that is what he used to wear when he played in the NBA.
The "Ham on five, hold the Mayo" joke works because there IS a hospital called the Mayo Clinic.
Top Secret! The spiritual successor to Airplane I and II.
How did you miss Kentucky Fried Movie? A major part of it is the parody of Enter the Dragon.
"He's fired"
Nope, those two were the directors making a cameo.

We even have one in the UK
You should check out the likes of Airplane 2, the Naked Gun Trilogy, and Top Secret... all brilliant films with the same kind of humour found here.
And the Hot Shots Dualology

After the credits, it shows the guy still sat in the taxi :)
The Naked Gun trilogy is the exact same humor, same makers.
In the scene with the pilot asking the boy all those seemingly inappropriate questions, he's referencing all the "cockpits".
