When the Doctor is giving Ted the pep talk about George Zipp -- this is a direct reference to the 1940s movie "Knute Rockne, All American" in which Ronald Reagan played a Notre Dame football player named George Gipp who in one scene is dying in a hospital bed. He tells his coach to tell the rest of the team to "win one for the Gipper," and the Doctor's speech is pretty much word-for-word from that scene. Also, the music playing when Striker gets up and says "I've got a plane to land" is the Notre Dame fight song.

The problem with parodies is that they are really hard to do right. With a parody you don't deliver the joke the way you would in a normal movie. Parody has to be deadpan and serious in the delivery. That's why this movie is so great. Instead of using comedians that would have delivered the jokes the way a comedian would, they used serious dramatic actors who delivered their lines they way a serious actor does. That's why this works so well.

The guy in the taxi is still there after the credits. In real life, he was tax resister Howard Jarvis who helped Proposition 13 pass in California. • @r0kus
    @r0kus 2 роки тому +5

I'm glad you can still enjoy 90% of this film. There were some cultural references that enhanced the movie to many viewers when it came out in 1980. First the taxi passenger was a cameo by Howard Jarvis, a wealthy California leading proponent of Proposition 13, which had set a hard limit on property taxes. So there he was, known for his stinginess, sitting with the taxi meter running. And many adults would recognize the plane's captain, Peter Graves, as the friendly adult figure on two Saturday morning live action series, _Fury_ (horses) and _Sky King_ (small plane pilot). So to see this wholesome man asking the boy about seeing a grown man naked, or whether he likes gladiator movies, added a lot to the humor. Of course today, they could never get away with jokes like that on even a PG-13 movie. The last I'll mention is Barbara Billingsley, the white wholesome mother on _Leave It to Beaver_ is the lady who talked jive with the black guys.

This movie is deep in the topical knowledge of the time. It is even funnier when you have the experience of having lived at the time. There's so much going on that many of us went to see it multiple times to catch all of the references.
If you haven't done it yet, go straight to the 'Naked Gun' trilogy.

I loved this movie! I was in high school when it came out. It is filled with a lot of parodies on popular tv commercials that were big back then and movies that made it even more hilarious! 😂😂😂😂😂

Ohhh Man, I laughed my ass off watching you trying to drink, right when one of the best lines in the movie is coming; "Cream?" "No thank you, I take it black; like my men." Aww wow saw it coming the whole time, going; NOOOOOO don't drink NOW!!! This movie has so many gags, that you can watch it a 100 times and still catch jokes you missed before. You didn't have the scene in your reaction, but the old lady who translates the jive talk for the stewardess is Barbara Billingsly, who is most famous for playing June Cleaver on the classic tv show Leave it to Beaver. She was the gold standard for suburban mom's back in the day. So her knowing how to speak jive with the brothers, is like the Dave Chappelle show sketch with Wayne Brady. Which if you haven't seen that and or don't know who Wayne Brady is I highly recommend checking out the sketch after you know who he is!!!
A few more parodies to add to the list, Airplane 2, which while not as good as the first is still hilarious. The Top Gun parody, Hot Shots and it's sequel Hot Shots Part Deux which parodies Rambo's 2&3. Balls of Fury is a parody of Bruce Lee's iconic Enter the Dragon. Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer and Kung Pow: Enter the Fist are hilarious Kung Fu parodies I know you'll love. Also while not a true parody, Army of Darkness is so much different from the other Evil Dead movies it might as well be a parody! And Lastly Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are amazing.

I grew up with this movie and still crack jokes in homage to AIRPLANE. When my friends and I were just in our teens We did Super 8 skits in homage to this movie...one time we had set up a pool side cafe where two people are having a conversation as kids were playing basketball behind them and overthrew their shots. The guys at the table gave their drink order (one asked for coffee and one said he'll 'just have tea') and carried on their conversation when a basketball came into frame, bounced hard on their table and off between them---without flinching or stopping their talk, then their order came...coffee and a styrofoam letter'T'. That was in 1981...I still have that foam T. :)

Omg I love this movie!!! What made this even more legendary is that most of the actors weren’t comedians. They were all dramatic actors up to this point. I’ll still say that to my buddies: “Hey I was wondering, “you ever seen a grown man naked?” Lmao 😂

I'm 65 and remember seeing this with my Mother at the Gold Coast in Australia. We both nearly wet our pants. It was so good to see some young ones enjoy this. I had a good time watching your reactions. People of my generation still use those catch phrases, especially 'surely you must be joking" "I'm not, and don't call me Shirley" 🤣The number of BIG name stars in this also added to the humour plus you can see it many times over and still find something you never spotted before. Thanks for an entertaining night boys😄

That Shirley line is probably one of my favorites ever in any comedy I have seen, the way Leslie Nielsen
delivers it is absolutely perfect; it's something if I ever get the chance to say I will lol.

Alllegedly some dude and his wife listened to news of Leslie Nielsen's passing while in the car. Radio newsman went quiet for a bit. Dude blurted out "Surely you can't be serious?" His wife looked at him funny. Newsman broke the silence with "I am serious. And don't call me Shirley!"

I haven't seen this movie in like, 40 yrs! Lol. In its time, I remember laughing all the way through it. My fav parts were really the guys in the control tower. Lloyd Bridges and the totally weird gay guy just killed me. And dozens of simple site gags, and plays on words. Was pure genius. Glad you guys liked it.

You wouldn't be able to write a script like the '70s and '80s used to have, because today's scripts are written meticulously for the purpose of _not_ offending people.

Robert Hays (the one who piloted the plane to safety in the end, kind of) was so ridiculously funny in this. He had me laughing so hard. He also sort of made fun of his character in this film in "Sharknado 2" in the intro. The last really funny movie I saw was "Ted"" which was released in 2012. That movie is so freaking hilarious.

It was a spoof of an old 1950's movie called "Zero Hour" where the pilots all eat the bad meal. The co-pilot was played by a famous football player, which set up the Kareem bit. These were famous drama and action actors, suddenly in a comedy. LLoyd Bridges did lots of action shows, especially the Sea Hunt series where he was always getting in underwater scuba fights. Really.

And Peter Graves was famous in the two tv series "Mission Impossible" (one at the end of 60s to start of 70s, the revival at the end of the 80s) where he played the main character Jim Phelps. btw: when looking this up, i just found out that he also had a famous brother, James Arness (Marshall Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke). Real surname of both was Aurness.
