James Burton is a genius guitarist, and traveled with Elvis on all his concert tours in the 70s. He started with Rick Nelson, while playing with many great musicians. Elvis only had the best of the best. His musicians were amazing, and they knew how to read Elvis! I was fortunate to attend 2 Elvis concerts, there was nothing better!
I would have loved to hear Albert Lee playing guitar with TCB⚡️ if you notice Albert going for more of the strat sound as in later years James Burton signature tele has a strat pickup configuration too. I mean im not knocking on James or his sound, I just would have to saw Albert on the gig.😎
I'm feeling guilty for not giving him my full attention... I knew he and the band were all extraordinary, but it's so hard to not focus on Elvis. Crazy magnetic.
I read a story one time where the guy that operated the museum at graceland after elvis died, and into the 80s and 90s, told about how new young rock and pop singers and rappers would stop by to take the tour, and they would be full of themselves for having a hit song on the charts, and would be goofing on elvis and making fun of him as they walked around, and then they would walk into the award room, where the walls are plastered with gold and platinum albums and they would suddenly fall silent, all the joking and goofing around would stop as they realized just how big elvis was in the music business and how many albums he had sold and that they had no chance of ever getting any where near as many awards.
How have I missed this?? I've never seen a guitar solo during an Elvis performance. He had such good musicians around him. Thanks for the kickass music, guys!
I got to meet & hang out w/ James Burton at Elvis Festival in Bad Nauheim Germany. As a kid I was amazed by his guitar solo on Steamroller Blues live Elvis Aloha from Hawaii. How wonderful to personally be able to tell him how his playing influenced my own music!
James Burton said that to this day, people ask him about the solo he did in Ricky Nelson's "Hello Mary Lou". When people are still inquiring about a 19 second solo you recorded 57 years ago, it's safe to say you're a legend.
Elvis of course is the greatest entertainer/performer of all time, with the most powerful and versatile voice. With his looks, the way he could move, charisma no one can ever touch The King. He also worked with 3 of the greatest guitarists of all time: Scotty Moore, Hank Garland and "Play it, James Burton"
I was at that concert and met James Burton... and did ask how he managed not to miss a beat... he answered with a smile ... "It's just what I do..." humble and talented
The TCB band is one of the greatest bands ever assembled. And I'm so glad they all got together and did that tour for the 25th anniversary of Elvis's death. So many of those people are no longer with us it's great to have the footage of seeing them all together again. I wish I would have been able to make it to one of those shows but I wasn't able to. Also how that for the power of Elvis, who else could sell out arena's only being there on a big screen. Just another reason why hes The King!!!
Thank you for finally featuring James Burton, most people don't realize that he was one of the greatest stylists to pick up a guitar. He wasn't a virtuoso but he was the key to the sound of many great artists and incredible guitar licks. He's not called the Master of the Telecaster for nothing. He's also in the Rock n Roll hall of fame BTW, inducted March 19, 2001.
@@tonysmith3475 Wow! I am impressed. And that you were in an Elvis the Concert. Those were awesome, touring the world since 1997. I've seen it about 10 times around this country. In Memphis in 20,000 seat venues. Next best thing to seeing him live.
James Burton was Ricky Nelson’s first and only lead guitarist. He made his bones with Ricky, and all those iconic solos are his. “Traveling Man” is probably the most well known and it’s so good you can sing it. To me, though, his best was in Ricky’s cover of “Fools Rush In.” It’s jazzy and country and chicken pickin’, all at the same time.
There’s only one James Burton. He was a natural talent just like Elvis. Don’t think there’s ever been a better band than the one James Burton brought together at Elvis request ..

The first time I saw the TCB band with the large-screen(s) Elvis The Concert show was in 1997 in Portland, Or. Then sometime in the early 2000s (2002 I think), I went on vacation with my partner, first stopping in Memphis on our way to Florida. There for a couple of days, we toured Graceland, with our Memphis stopover culminating in seeing the large multi-screen Elvis show with the TCB band. My memory is foggy, but I believe this was at the Mid-South Coliseum, where Elvis's 1974 concert was recorded for a live album. Our room was at the Heartbreak Hotel, and we had dinner at the theme restaurant "Elvis Presley's Memphis." I had a deep-fried peanut butter and banana sandwich. And for the first time, I tried breaded deep-fried dill pickle chips (those are a thing in the south in case you didn't know.) They were great! I hope to one day get to see the large-screen(s) Elvis show with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. I hope they are going to continue doing that show. I also hope one day for technology to improve enough to allow for a 3-D holographic Elvis concert. EPE has said they won't do it yet because the Elvis hologram can't move or "walk" around the stage. It would stay front and center the whole time. I can understand their point on that. I'm hoping for a breakthrough!
Mr. Fil, I'm so sorry for misspelling your name for years, but thank God you carry the torch for articulate appreciation of the great music of all time. Keep on keeping on. I am so respectful for the great work James Burton has done for over sixty years.
Years ago i worked with an older man that actually saw Elvis live sometime in the late 60's or early 70's. Really surprised me to hear. I asked him, "how was seeing Elvis live?" He said, "Listen, if you got the priviledge to see Elvis live, you understood why they called him The King."

Oh, thank you so much for remembering us old people. Really enjoyed this. These were the innovators. (And Ronnie T. was a hard working drummer and never missed a beat and gave Elvis’ performances the energy. Just giving him cred too). Elvis admitted in an interview one time that he wasn’t a great guitar player. Mainly just chords to accompany himself and played piano, too.
Used to love when Elvis would say “pick it James..” because you knew he was about to melt your face with some extraordinary chicken pickin’! Truly a Master of the Telecaster. 🤙🏻🎸
This is a cool performance by all involved! James Burton, was so much in demand in His heydays. Elvis singing a Chuck Berry song how cool is that? another great analysis here Fil.
Thanks Fil, yes James Burton was the perfect guitarist for Elvis. Elvis picked his own rhythm players, no one else. Elvis always gave his band members credit and would introduce them to the audience. I have to say, the comments section is very accurate on there information.
Elvis sold over a billion records n people are still buying everything Elvis. There will never be another Elvis in our time. Fantastic musicians on stage all of them and with an anchor like Ron tutt in the drum seat you arnt gonna go far wrong. The king was is always will be!!
Got to give it up to the drummer, Ronnie Tutt. Not many people can say they were a member of Elvis's band and the Jerry Garcia Band............at the same time (JGB 1974-1977, Elvis's TCB Band 1969-1977).
I am so impressed with your knowledge. My pal and Wrecking Crew member Don Peake told my about James Burton's use of strings. When he showed up with the Wrecking Crew no body there had ever seen any thing like it. I met him at a birthday party for Albert Lee. He couldn't be more nice and humble. All the real ones seem to be that way.
I got to stay at James' house in Toluca Lake for about a month back in '77. It was amazing to get hear about his time with Elvis and to see some of the things that Elvis had given him. What a great guitar player. My mother's best friend had grown up with James in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Any of these musicians I've ever seen who play with Elvis Presley are the cream of the crop nothing but Pros!! I actually have a copy of this on DVD the entire concert which is fantastic!!! Very impressed by your knowledge of James Burton and the boys!!
Also Jerry Sheff was a big part of Elvis's sound in the seventies ....great bass player ...even played standup bass on Roy Orbison's Black and White Night
Thank you Fil. You're making your older viewers very happy by reviewing the truly great artists we grew up loving. It's obvious you respect their talent and understand they performed when technology was very basic making things much more difficult.
I know this is an old video but Elvis played drums, bass and the PIANO as well. From what I understand, Elvis was a very accomplished pianist. My favorite of all time, The Legend Elvis Presley. Never Ever be another like Elvis.
I think that anyone that played in a band for Elvis has to be considered one of the greatest musicians ever. Elvis is timeless and he brought them along. And Burton....the Master of the Telecaster

Thanks, Fil! You always do your homework, and then some! And always spot-on presentations. Your enthusiasm is contagious and thank goodness there's no immunity to it! 👌👍😊💕
About 30 years ago a local radio station did as part of a series a show on James. Some of the stories were great. After he became a session man he didn't want to tour again he liked the steady hours and being home at night. One day might be Frank Sinatra to some rocker. When the colonel rang him to ask him to play for Elvis he declined. Elvis himself rang and finally convinced him to join at Las Vagas. Later he toured with Emmylou Harris. On the opening night in London he went on stage and there in the front row were all the top British guitarists who had come to see him. He basically freaked then said to himself, I've got a job to do. and did it. A true legend in the but not in the limelight.
Awe, thanks so much, scotty moore, joudaneers sweet inspirations, so much 💖 & talent on that stage. Incredible musicians & these productions will be treasured.
Wow! I just found this and it absolutely blew me away. I heard this for the first time. What a story. I`m not a musician, and so many things you explain are totally new to me. To us, non-musicians, who love music and can`t live without it, so many things are hidden and we just don`t understand why certain pieces sound so good. Your knowledge and info are just dynamite. I hope, when the time is ripe, you will have a lot of children, at least 12. 🤣. Most of the time, very talented people have very few children, and the mediocre ones have more than 1 child, while it should be the other way around. But, the reasons for that are quite obvious... This was wonderful! Thank you so very much, Fil! Many friendly greetings from Slovenia 😊
No matter how much music you hear today, it will never top Elvis voice and his showmanship. Back then they didn't have all the voice enhancements they use now. I remember crying all day and night when I heard about his death. He died way to young, I pray he made things right with God before he died, so he can sing with the angels.
My Urban Garden Mary....I hate hearing people say things like this about Elvis. Let me assure you that if you, or I, or many, many people, were even close to being the sweet, kind humanitarian that Elvis Presley was, this would be a far better world. This world is so much better for Elvis having been in it.
Burton is amazing!! Saw this in concert years ago & it blew me away... A little too young to had gotten to see Elvis for real, but the show was stunning.. Thanks Fil!
Let us not forget Ron Tutt on drums who later played many more years with Neil Diamond, actually right up until the time that ND retired last year. This is not to mention that James Burton played many years with Ricky Nelson and provided some great guitar on the early RN songs. Just listen to the guitar solo on Rick's Believe What You Say played high on the neck of the guitar!
I had the privilege to see James Burton in these Elvis concerts and he is amazing one skilled guitarist and he was the first guitar choice when Elvis returned to live performances in 1969... James and Elvis so intune together... James also used to play Johnny B Goide with the guitar behind his head on stage with Elvis...he also played with Roy Orbison and Bruce Springsteen.. Awesome reaction and appreciation of a true guitar master
Awesome footage...I was blessed to see them perform with Elvis on the big screen...back in 2010...amazing how these guys played sadly Ronnie Tud 😢 passed away...
Great information on how Burton adapted his guitar. I have heard many top players refer to James as being as good as anyone. And the TCB Band and Elvis, what can you say other than that they are also as good as anyone.
Wow, this is incredible playing! I was just a baby when my Mom gave me my 1st 45 record! Lol I remember, putting it on my record player, at about 2 or 3 yo. It was Elvis' Hound Dog, I loved it, and just sang and danced! This is a cool video. Again, Fil you are a great teacher and your review was spot on! I wish you a wonderful, happy New Year, filled with great music! You are a very talented artist as well! 🎉🎶🎸🎹🎤🥁
I was lucky enough to see one of these shows. All the original musicians and back up singers. Even though Elvis wasn't physically with us his performance was amazing, exciting, electrifying! The whole show was simply fantastic. The best.
Every British rock guitarist from the 60s had James Burton as one- if not their main influence. His solos with Rick Nelson from 1957 onward (and even before that time) with his diamond edge tone were just so amazing. He has been playing professionally since he was 14- back in 1953 on the Louisiana Hayride where he first saw Elvis. It is worth mentioning that he's also a superb dobro player. The key guys that wrote the rules for rock and roll guitar were Scotty Moore, Cliff Gallup, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and James Burton. One of his best solos is on this track from 1962- ua-cam.com/video/6qFtOj6MtNQ/v-deo.html A number of years back, James Burton toured with Billy Swan and I was lucky enough to meet him and shake his hand. You can see James way back in 1957 with Bob Luman on UA-cam and apart from his superb playing, the one constant factor is that he is always smiling! As has been written "The King James Version" is the original and best version of true Teletone. James is a man of few words if he can help it- he lets his Telecaster do the talking.
James Burton and Fred Carter Junior both played together on the Louisiana Hayride and experimented with banjo strings- this is before Burton joined Dale Hawkins and recorded SuzI Q.It would have been some time later after Burton had established himself in Los Angeles with Rick Nelson that Ernie Ball started to sell these slinky strings in the early 60s- he had been a steel guitarist himself.
James Burton was a big influence for pretty much every rock guitarist of the 60's and 70's. You know, all the ones who influenced us. And was that Jerry Scheff on bass? He was not only Elvis' bass, he's also the guy who played on the last few Doors albums. Elvis really had a great band.
I enjoy your videos, you offer insightful, knowledgeable technical information, as well as behind the scenes info that iIfind very interesting. Thank you for your work.
Great video. Could you react to Elvis when he switches guitars with Scotty on the 68 special. He switched his SJ-200 for the L5 electric and plays with a lot of raw feeling. It's pretty much just him playing and you can hear this when his guitar unplugs and everything stops. It's not technical but plays with great feeling...Also not credited but it's well known he plays the bass track on Baby I don't care. Thanks Again
I remember James was with Ricky Nelson and on the Ozzie and Harriet program every week backing Ricky up. He was good enough to not miss one episode .A very exciting player back then .
Fil, that was great. Very interesting. Amazing what a few great musicians and some video and audio editing and mixing tracks can produce. Really enjoyed that one. Fun!

So many Elvis songs you can hear Elvis say " Play it James." Classic
👍
James Burton can be seen playing his guitar behind his head on Johnny B. Goode during Elvis Presley's last concert tour in 1977.
You can also hear "play it James" from Jerry Lee Lewis on many recordings.
He got the absolute best for every member of his band.
James Burton is one of the absolutely most underrated guitarists on the planet. He belongs in the conversation with Hendrix, Page, Clapton

Got to give it up to the drummer, Ronnie Tutt. Not many people can say they were a member of Elvis's band and the Jerry Garcia Band............at the same time (JGB 1974-1977, Elvis's TCB Band 1969-1977).
Yeah! He was essential to making this work!
Exceptional drummer
Love Elvis. The best forever.
I was at that concert. Was awesome watching James. Even met James Burton and Ronnie Tutt at the hotel we were staying at.
I got to stay at James' house in Toluca Lake for about a month back in '77. It was amazing to get hear about his time with Elvis and to see some of the things that Elvis had given him. What a great guitar player. My mother's best friend had grown up with James in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Cool!
Any of these musicians I've ever seen who play with Elvis Presley are the cream of the crop nothing but Pros!! I actually have a copy of this on DVD the entire concert which is fantastic!!! Very impressed by your knowledge of James Burton and the boys!!
Thanks!
Also Jerry Sheff was a big part of Elvis's sound in the seventies ....great bass player ...even played standup bass on Roy Orbison's Black and White Night
Wonderful love this with all my heart
First saw James as part of Ricky Nelson's band. Legend often overlooked.
👍☺
Thank you Fil. You're making your older viewers very happy by reviewing the truly great artists we grew up loving. It's obvious you respect their talent and understand they performed when technology was very basic making things much more difficult.
👍☺
Fantastic guitarist. Great gear combo and sound. Love Master Burton!
No problem!
Half of the pleasure with these videos is to watch how much you are enjoying the performance of these amazing musicians 😀
Hi Fil, you really should do a reaction of Elvis’ version of “Oh Danny Boy”. PERFECTION
No problem and thanks!
I saw the show in Sheffield and twice in Memphis. Jerry Scheff, briefly seen on bass, was the bass player on the LA Woman album by The Doors.
Cool!
Thanks Fil!
👍☺
James Burton is one of the best. His studio work with Ricky Nelson was great rockabilly.
👍
ELVIS PRESLEY THE BEST SINGER ALL TIMES ELVIS PRESLEY THE KING OF MUSIC FOREVER ELVIS THE BEST ARTIST ALL TIMES
James is very active on Facebook too and is an amazing human being.
Cool! Thanks!
Awesome footage...I was blessed to see them perform with Elvis on the big screen...back in 2010...amazing how these guys played sadly Ronnie Tud 😢 passed away...
Very interesting. TY
I like the professional analysis on the ability of performers
You explain so well I'm quite ready to buy a guitar 😎🎸🔥😍
Just like Elvis was there with James and the band, fucking brilliant!!!!!!!
Great information on how Burton adapted his guitar. I have heard many top players refer to James as being as good as anyone. And the TCB Band and Elvis, what can you say other than that they are also as good as anyone.
👍
*better than anyone
Wow, this is incredible playing! I was just a baby when my Mom gave me my 1st 45 record! Lol I remember, putting it on my record player, at about 2 or 3 yo. It was Elvis' Hound Dog, I loved it, and just sang and danced! This is a cool video. Again, Fil you are a great teacher and your review was spot on! I wish you a wonderful, happy New Year, filled with great music! You are a very talented artist as well! 🎉🎶🎸🎹🎤🥁
Thanks Pamela, Happy New Year!
I was lucky enough to see one of these shows. All the original musicians and back up singers. Even though Elvis wasn't physically with us his performance was amazing, exciting, electrifying! The whole show was simply fantastic. The best.
I did as well, it was like ‘Elvis was in the building’ it felt electric. Amazing show how it was put together.
I saw it twice in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm , sweden
Wow you know your music. Well done .very interesting to hear you talk about these singers .
another amazing video phil. youre my favorite at what you do because we get to learn so much. thanks once again phil
Thanks!
Eddie cochran who was also an accomplished session player played with an unwound g string in the 1950s
HAPPY 8 O T H BIRTHDAY!!!!
James Burton🎸

James Burton was a big influence for pretty much every rock guitarist of the 60's and 70's. You know, all the ones who influenced us. And was that Jerry Scheff on bass? He was not only Elvis' bass, he's also the guy who played on the last few Doors albums. Elvis really had a great band.
Yeah this was Elvis' band 👍
Check him out on the LA WOMAN album.
It truly was “the sound of a generation”! Really love this channel. Play it James 🎶 ✌️
Thanks!
Thank you Fil 🙏. Happy New Year to you and your family 👍🙋♂️🙋🏻
Happy New Year! ☺
That 'Hello Mary Lou' solo is still great. Loved Ronnie Tutt too!
I learn something every time I hear your analysis...
Thanks David, I'm glad to know this! 😁
Played for Elvis for 9 years, till the day he died. He was fantastic
É contagiante ver o sorriso de Fil quando vê apresentações de Elvis🎉
Great review, Fil! The TCB Band, the world's greatest rock 'n' roll band!
Elvis ALSO played lead guitar on
the original recordings of
"One Night With You", &
"Blue Christmas".🎸
I remember James was with Ricky Nelson and on the Ozzie and Harriet program every week backing Ricky up. He was good enough to not miss one episode .A very exciting player back then .
Cool!
Fil, that was great. Very interesting. Amazing what a few great musicians and some video and audio editing and mixing tracks can produce. Really enjoyed that one. Fun!
Thanks Thomas! 😁
The best part of the video is your smile. You really dig the music. Great
