#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

@@dannywol5170 Dude, I am not talking about re-inventing the wheels. I have no problem that it is a MOBA or it has 3rd person view or whatever. Nobody is saying that generate new ideas on a daily basis, That is practically impossible. Everybody copies from each other and that is a fact. But tell me, does Smite actually have a story or any kind of lore?? because it's competitors certainly have. DOTA has it's huge lore and LOL has too, Hell even a dead MOBA like HON has ridiculous amount of lore.
When you have story elements and lore you can create something out of nothing. Look how Dota and LOL constantly pump up new characters after new characters, yes obviously they are not perfect but at least they have their own character background and backstories. And also they do not have to rely on some other franchise to bring characters into their own universe. Smite does it to attract new players, which I have no problem with but when you have to bring characters from a tv show to your own hand-created universe you have already lost creativity.
That is why most of HI-REZ projects fails miserably because they chase trends. The only reason SMITE and PALADINS are still alive because they are old games and have an ardent fanbase which is quite nice.

You could do an entire series based on Hi-Rez's failed games chasing trends. Aside from Smite remaining a viable & unique alternative to MOBA's, they have a tendency to be a bit late to a party, offer a unique spin on a trend, then try to quickly monetize it & drive it into the ground.
Hell, they found success again this year with another game, but it's been so long since I've heard anything about it that I can't remember the name, and just assume it flamed out already.

Hi-Rez has to be one of the more frustrating studios out there... At least in terms of whenever their games tank due to their own actions...
-When FFXIV had it's original disasterous launch, the devs came on stage apologizing, bowing to their audience and had legit tears in their eyes for failing their fans, then would go on to turn things around.
-When Anthem was tanking HARD, Bioware at the very least acknowdledged that they blew it big time and made an honest effort to see if they could salvage the game, it may have been too little too late, but at the very least the devs showed that they knew they messed up...
Hi-Rez? Just pretend nothing ever happened... Just... Dead silence... They are seriously lucky to have success in Smite and Paladins...

Another one that comes to mind is the cursed OB64 update for Paladins, which I still believe hampered that game's growth. Don't even get me started on the Mixer and Facebook streaming fiasco, absolutely horrible decision that poisoned the growth of the Smite (and Paladins to a lesser extent) esports scene.

They had the perfect spin on the BR genre to make it way more fun than how every other BR is "run around like a jackass for 45 minutes before dying to a dot 30 miles in the distant". The battles for controls of furnaces (upgrading your abilities and guns at furnaces was 100% vital for having any chance to win the game, and there were only a few scattered around that would eventually get destroyed, so you HAD to go head-first into action at the furnace battles) were what really made the game fun for me.

I played the closed beta for Realm a LOT and hirez did two things that frustrated the testers to no end. 1: They never took our feedback seriously. The players that were hardcore post paladins battlegrounds and pre open beta on steam were EXTREMELY dedicated to the game and very few in numbers. I'm talking we all recognized each other, knew which squad everyone rolled with, knew what tactics and classes people preferred, and after each game we'd all hop into the other teams discords to smack talk and joke around. Late at night was when I was most able to play and the queue times would easily be around 30-45 minutes. Most people I play games with today can be traced back to that glorious closed beta period. But no matter what response we gave, no matter how much we tweeted or posted in the discord or streamed the game we rarely got the impression that our feedback was being taken seriously or even acknowledged. Hirez did what they wanted and were always shocked when the thing we knew would happen eventually happened.
2: Hirez is and was reliably bad at putting an idea on paper and coming to the conclusion that it was a good or bad idea. They would simply add it to the game and see what sticks. This was made only worse by their tendency to put the changes into a test server and only keep the test patch live for days or even sometimes hours. Again our feedback on the test servers yielded little in the way of changes. Despite our warnings and sometimes straight begging them to undo the addition of new content, balance changes, or even removal of content (RIP engineer class) we were always met with silence. The testing patch period served only as a way to see if there was something game breaking as in if the patch ran on the testers side then it was good to go.
The most frustrating part of all of this is that it did and still has so much potential. There are a lot of people still playing it. It's not pulling CS:GO or DOTA2 numbers but it's still peaking at over 1000 players not counting the xbox, ps4, and switch players. With no future in sight and no updates for the past 18 months that's honestly impressive. There still is a dedicated playerbase and the game has been abandoned without ever leaving beta. Take Natural Selection 2 from Unknown Worlds Entertainment. That game is PC only, peaks out around 400 player, and is 9 years old. The Devs are still updating and holding tournaments for it and it's a niche FPS/RTS hybrid game that is very unwelcoming for new players. If Realm Royale were just a bad game I wouldn't be so upset about how hirez handled it, I'd just not care and move on. But the fact that they haven't updated the game, haven't fixed many bugs or issues (some years old), created an entire studio to support the game then quietly liquidated it to work on other hirez IPs, have gone radio silent on the realm discord and twitter, and won't even lift a finger with just a few devs to breathe some life into the game is beyond frustrating. It's still a fun game, it still has these unique elements that you can't find in any other BR and yet hirez just completely and silently gave up on the thousands of people still playing it. Still happy to sell their cosmetics, running the game on the cheapest servers amazon sells, with no intention to release the source code to the fans who will happily finish the game that they refuse to, just hoping everyone forgets about it and stops playing it so they can finally shut it down forever.

This is the only Battle Royale that caught my attention and it was freaking fun. First patch out of nowhere they removed the most important aspect of the game. It’s unbelievable that they never reverted those poor decisions. Shocking that people were being paid to make those decisions.

I put over 800 hours into this game in 2018-2019. It was fantastic, but turned to bots and long queues quickly. There was a solid "tournament" discord that helped, but the lack of custom matches sucked.
