    #DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

      The only battle royale I actually enjoyed was in cod Cold War, and specifically hardpoint battle royale. My main issue is that nothing happens in these games. You spend so long running around looking for people, and if ya dead ya dead. I can spend 5 minutes running around just to get sniped by someone hundreds of yards away from me, that ain’t fun. Hardpoint centralized the focus into 3 small areas on the map and gave infinite lives. Unfortunately, they added a few other battle royale modes, and I think at some point took it away, so now I don’t play it.

    Something I rarely see people acknowledge when talking about social games failing is the nature of sunk cost and social limitations.
    Players who play these types of games are already heavily invested in other games in the same genre that have been around for years. Unique features do not sell a game like this anymore.
    As for retaining players; everyone will give it a go. But much like you’ll buy Xbox if your friends play Xbox, or PlayStation if your friends are on PlayStation, if your friends aren’t prepared to leave their other game to join you, eventually you’ll go back and rejoin them in your other game. And if your time playing games is restricted then you’re going to play with friends if you’re a social gamer.
    And if they aren’t in the new game, then you’re going to go back to the old game.
    New players leave because no one they know is playing.

      This is kind of a huge problem with "we want X audience" trend-chasing attitude in general. DotA players don't want to play games like DotA, they want to play DotA, good luck convincing them to switch even to another popular MOBA like LoL, let alone a complete newcomer. Every time some new bandwagon pops up, it's the same story - market quickly gets split between two or three titles that were early to the party and become household names, and everyone else barely gets any scraps.

    • @36inc

      I think long time viability in games like this is two things- first is it has to be fun to move in the game. I still load apex because it feels good to exist in the game.
      second is conciseness. more modes make sense for other games but brs need to be wholly focused on one thing/ kinda feels counter intuitive but really you just need a ranked and nonranked mode. everything else should be focused on making the customization as deep and inexpensive as possible- worthwhile cosmetics should feel attainably difficult not a grind to punish you. My metric is getting an item on just play should take you less than 10 hours of game play. it should also be genuinely cool. no one likes unlocking a flat color. I prefer unlocking shiny stuff. I get that its a carrot on the stick thing but if you never let the dog catch the ball eventually theyll get bored.

    It's funny, when I was working on SW:Battlefront (the Pandemic one), we went from mostly testing on the console, where we'd get dozens of kills in a map, to PC, where we'd get hundreds without even trying. Even with some aim assist on the consoles that we turned off for the PC, it just reinforced how trying to have PC and console play against each other was not going to work at all, and honestly never could because the input systems were just too different.

    It seems to me that the big problem was lack of clearly set priorities. They made a PC shooter but when they realized console players console players may have felt slighted by the network test they overcompensated instead of just letting the console side be a side thing. Or if they wanted console and PC players they should have designed the game from the ground up with that design in mind.
    Additionally they clearly wanted a hardcore competitive shooter, maybe even had e-sports in mind, but also clearly wanted a slice of the large casual audience that BRs appeal to. What resulted was a game too complex for casual audiences, but lacking that tight refinement that competitive audiences crave, and as such they all went back to the games they were already playing.
    To top it all off Ubisoft went trend chasing, and anyone with even sub-standard business sense should know that's a risky game to play. Trends can last years or they can last weeks, and trying to squeeze into an already crowded market has marked the death of good and shit games for years now.
    Basically HyperScape was the BattleBorn of Battle Royales.

    I think a few issues that were not touched on or touched on more generally involved the gameplay itself.
    - Even though there were a lot of different environments, every building feels totally the same, in part because of their scale. It doesn't really matter what shape an object is if mobility is so high. The shapes and scale needed to be larger to make an impact, specifically interiors. The game just feels like you're jumping on all the same roofs and looting all the same buildings.
    - The hitscan gunplay. Because the gunplay was almost entirely hitscan, it made the game easier for people with mechanical skill to dominate people without it. Projectile weapons force players to try to compensate their aim and gives the enemy a chance to hit them when they miss. Allowing anybody to instantly shoot anyone with a sniper or the pistol makes counterplay completely impossible, which again increases the barrier to entry.
    - The voice acting is mostly repulsive and annoying, and turns you off the game.
    - The Twitch audience flash events felt super gimmicky and were often unfun and annoying. Because they could happen so often, it made the gameplay feel super casual despite having far more competitive gameplay.

      Another small factor is the devs sabotaged themselves on the first patch. At launch, the long TTK and movement made it feels kinda like arena shooter, making the fight last longer and doesn't fall into who gets the drop first wins.
      Quite some people didn't get that and didn't want to adjust, so the devs listened to their feedback and lower the TTK noticeably. It's not that much but it made the fights much faster with less time to react to your situation, which... feels just like another BR shooter in the market again. The movement mechanics don't justify it when you can't really fully utilise it to outplay others.
      I'm one of those who are turned away by that change (I was actually interested in it) and haven't touched the game since. Have they changed it back? No idea, don't care to know either 'cause I've already lost interest. I'm sure many others feel the same.

    Short answer : Fast FPS is a dead genre
    * Hyper Scape
    * Quake Champions
    * Dirty Bomb
    * Titanfall
    * Lawbreakers
    * Splitgate (it's still alive but agonizing)
    * Many others...
    That's my favorite kind of games, as I have pretty much 500h of Hyper Scape and Dirty bomb... The story repeats itself every single time.
    The only anomaly here is to have Team Fortress 2 still alive after all those years. It's in between casual and fast FPS, but this could also explains why competitive team fortress never took off (it's still alive but never was a professional esport even though this is one of the most popular games out there.)
    And great video btw, you summed up every issue it had. But trust me, as a fast FPS enjoyer, this game was porn. It was so much fun and I'm still happy for the moments it gave me.

    I think there is something to say on the fact that it launched a bit late during the BR craze. This left it in the horrible well of people already setting up into other games, finding their sweet spot and not wanting to abandon it. The game already launched with the idea that it had to compete heavily, and when you are all into effort, one mistake is all that takes.
    The high floor was the killing blow, and then instead of fixing the problem and trying to settle into a niche workable position to then expand with due time and test, they decided to go all out on “ we must get the console gold “ which brought in what we can only call legal aim-bots.
    Now imagine a game you play that has an high skill requirement being flooded with an army of aim-bots SPONSORED by the developer. It killed long time players interest and surely didn’t gain much of a console audience. That was finishing off the job, and once you are marked in an high competitive market, you are out.

  • @seto007
    @seto007 2 роки тому +3

    I think one of the lesser talked about issues with the game was how it's powered-up style design conflicts incredibly heavily with the content stream model that most BR games have. In Hyperscape, you got more powerful weapons and power-ups by picking up a copy of the weapon or power-up. While this is a great idea initially, the ability to actually power up your gear gets less and less likely with each new weapon and power up addition, since adding additional stuff to the pool just dilutes the already existing spawns, and this means that the ability to become an ultra-powerful god build by the end becomes less and less likely with each update, thus disincentivizing the desire to continue playing. What's worse is that the only real solution to this is to keep the game in a perpetual limbo, which comes with its own downside of having the game get stale rather quickly compared to competitors.
    It's an incredibly serious design flaw that I'm really surprised wasn't picked up on during development.

    One big point in the game dying hard could be to the various technical issues where sound would randomly die and not come back until you restart the game. This bug plagued the first big twitch rivals event in this game aswell and as it was out for everyone on twitch to see. People got the bug at least once every 5 games. For many serious people trying to actually qualify for twitch rivals there was also alot of rule breaking and admins incorrectly following their own rules which led to a lot of lost faith from people actually wanting to play the game seriously.

    Hyperscape has been the most enjoyable BR for me out of the variety, the more focus on verticality instread of almost 90% horizontal aim on all other BRs, the movement options always does it for me as i see speed and movement to be the best way to improve as a side to just aimcontrol. if only aim is what you got you where not able to keep up in this game, though it helps allot. the biggest pain in a battleground game is always the 3rd partying, and the hecks gave allot of option to dissengage and to engage in a chase making it so no 2 engagements are just hanging around a single building but moves throught the streets and to other building blocks even. But you would always have to move back for downed team-mates. These factors made the game just fun, nad without more than 2 min of downtime per match. Atleast this is how i remember the game, it has been quite a while and i dont play many shooters but always made time if my friends wanted to play.

    I tried to play the game not too long after it had released, from the trailers I stumbled upon I thought it looked alright and was polished enough for me to give it a try, plus, it was free, what did I have to lose? High floor + BR = brutal new player experience. Getting destroyed repeatedly in a respawn mode is one thing, but investing like 10 mins in looting then dying super fast makes it really tough to get better

    I'm a console player and I can say that pulled me away from the game are a bit diferent: it was like an Arena Hero Shooter, but without any pre-selected specals and spread around a too wider Open Area with lots of verticality.
    Here's a more in-depth video if you wanna know more: ua-cam.com/video/nTlvuHZcxw0/v-deo.html
    Also, you forgot to mention Ubisoft now as a TONNE of new projects lined up, so keeping this (dying) game was unviable.

    I played this game with a friend, it was a lot of fun. It was incredibly fast like Apex Legends, and made the "spectating/dead" more fun and interactive, where you're not entirely useless after dying, and the ring was also a fun and good way to take away camping.
    For us, the game just felt too much like an arcade. It felt too goofy to take it seriously, and you can clearly see who's better and when they are, you pretty much gave up, not just due to skill, but map, movement and tools knowledge that we didn't know. It was also dwindling player numbers so quickly, it took 5-10 minutes waiting for each game.

    Do you believe the game could come back? If so what changes would need to be made? I want a new BR everything feels old and dry. I love the look of this game and want it to be revived and to succeed

    I remember feeling this urge to play battle royale, but I didn't want neither PUBG or Fortnite since I didn't feel like they were for me, neither Apex because I felt I was just one more following the trend. Enter Hyper Scape, Battle Royale with Arena style mechanics, which I love, even though I didn't play it that much. I was trying to get my friends to get into the game and never fully had them, and playing alone was so hard. Not because of the ceiling, because I don't mind getting better and geting wrecked while doing so, but because the queues were so abysmal. I then gave up on the game because of that and now I actually have a ton of time on Apex. It saddens me that this game never got the audience. I really loved everything about it but, like it is the case with so much games with Ubisoft, it was poorly mishandled and then forgotten. Thank you for this video and for making it even more clear why it never really gained popularity. I am now going on a binge to see other videos like this, since there were so many titles I could recognize.
    Also, if nerdSlayer do read my comment, I wonder if you could investigate Roller Champions, another Ubisoft title. They were communicating, far and between but they were, had a closed beta and after it closed, the community never heard a thing about them. I also loved that game but I fear it suffered a fate far worse than Hyper Scape's: not even getting past beta. They say news are coming soon and they will release it, but I really have no hope. I do believe it would be interesting to see why they gave up on it.

    It’s crazy how much of this video could apply to Vampire the Masquerade Bloodhunt. It’s dealing with the same skill floor, lack of ELO, and matchmaking issues.

    Marketing must have been a large part of the problem, 'cause I'd never even heard of it before this video. Granted, I'm 100% not the target audience for this, but it actually looks pretty neat.

    On the topic of personality, you bring up a great comparison between this and something like For Honor and I've spent a lot of time thinking but WHY that is. The "hip & cool" personality tone lacks cohesion and unity. Something like For Honor, Rainbow Six, and Halo rely on this "brotherhood" mentality that is easy for folks to feel inspired and connected to. Nintendo on the flip side makes their games a celebration that connects folks. In the end it boils down to a reverence for the source material and in presenting a tonet. Games like Riders Republic, Watchdogs etc. Force this "cool" that just isn't relatable. If the multiverse idea really capitalized on all of Ubisofts franchises into a unified reverence to their history, folks might have attached themselves to it more.

      I dont even know where they get this, let's say "urban cool aesthetic" from. The best selling media in recent years dont even look like this. MCU doesnt look like this, GTAV doesnt look like this, popular tv series dont look like this... The only similar aesthetic exist in music videos, but music videos last for 5 mins top.

      Hey, I don’t know if this is the place to put it, but I have a suggestion for your next Death of a Game. The game was called Altus Reactor and it lasted 4 years before its servers went down. It was a great game with plenty charm and lots of strategy, but I can never figure out what went wrong. The only mistakes I know of are maybe a lack of marketing, and that they pushed away players by having their cinematic reveal trailer making the game look like an Overwatch clone when the game played mor like XCOM. Your the one guy on the internet I can think of who can figure out what happened. I hope you take the case.

    this one is simple
    1: ubisoft and br was a thing a lot of people didn't like the sound of
    2: high skill floor means less casual, thus smaller interest from a larger audience
    3: BR's are good for twitch streamers, less so for the average joe coming home after work. too much set up time for a match where you might not stand a chance at all because the equivalent of shroud the human T-1000 is in the lobby, and people finally started to realize this after a long time
    (if you do enjoy br's good for you!)

    And after a month since the video came, Ubisoft OFFICIALLY cancelled the game and the servers will shut down before the start of the summer, shame that it ended tbh, they just needed some ACTUAL characters and a more.... Well non generic map and it could have been better, the weapons too, could have gotten an upgrade..

    I played this constantly and watched the player count drop slowly and lobby times increase more and more over time even tho I was having an amazing time. I never understood why it didn’t take off with so many things going for it and a fun loop
