My grandpa once got the scam where the scammer calls and pretends to be a family member that got into an accident, got locked up, and needed money for bail. The funny thing is that the scammer chose the ONE grandchild that does not have a car and does not have a driver's license, and that very grandchild was sitting across the table from him LOL.

For well over a decade now, every few months I get this "handwritten" note on what looks like yellow legal paper. It's from this self-described little old lady who is renting a place in a nearby town who wants me to donate my property to her because she's at the very end of her life and just wants "a place of my own to spend my last days on." She urges me to do the "moral" and "Christian" thing and let her have my land... for free. It's all fake tho -- the letter is printed on a web press, the handwriting is a font, and the woman's name doesn't exist -- but the return address does. It's a Realtor. 🙄

@@ss5447-p2q It's something a lot of churches do here in the South. They play on the salvation angle and ask their members to tithe their land to the church when they pass, so the church can sell it and rake in some easy money. It makes zero sense to me, but some folks seem to be pretty gung ho for it -- prolly why this realtor is doing it too.

@@xger21 Oh I have, this one and several others... gave up on that route almost a decade ago tho. It's a low income neighborhood that no one cares about, especially the cops. I will tell you the secret to not getting hooked into a scam. Keep your feelings in check. Yep. Scammers are trolling, EVERYWHERE. And all someone has to do is respond. You know you shouldn't respond. But when you do, for whatever reason, maybe you're tired, maybe you had a fight with your girl, maybe you got a flat tire, whatever, it's got you a little off. You need to cap your feelings, and take them home, and let them out there. And never take care of any kind of business if you are feeling. Just don't do it. Business and feelings do not mix. I call the act of indulging in feelings "emotional compromise". Do not be emotionally compromised. You may as well add that to your life's doctrine, just adopt the saying like you own it. "Do not be emotionally compromised." As long as you are a slave to your feelings, as long as your feelings control you, you are a mark just waiting to happen. Don't be a mark. Your feelings are your own anyway, you shouldn't be sharing them with others, you should be guarding them jealously, and you should be severely punishing those who intrude, or try to.

Thankfully, my program had an excellent co-op program where I was able to effectively pay for school while going to school part time, so that and a going to community college the first 2 years on scholarship saved me from the god awful terms on student loans (I did look into these and the terms were so awful, I never looked again, immediate non-starter)

One of the latest scams that have been getting really bad is scam job postings on sites like indeed. I have had to learn to really look at the details of the company that posted the job because they are really sneaky. They will copy and paste an actual job post change the name of their "company" to match the one that actually posted it, loosen the hiring conditions a bit or advertise a job as remote that was never intended to be remote and then post it on the job board.

No, you can't get a 72 oz steak in just about any restaurant. The standard is anywhere from 8 to 12 oz, with 14 being around the high end of what you can typically expect to find. (That's 225g, 340g, and 400g respectively, with the kind of rounding you're supposed to use in situations like this.) 16 oz (1 lb or 455g) is considered very large. Black Angus, a large steakhouse chain, offers steaks as small as 6 oz (170g) and as large as 18 oz (510g) and slices of prime rib as large as 24 oz (680g) and it's really, really rare to find anything larger than that.
Honestly, even your typical American would find it impossible to finish a 72 oz steak.

I had scammers coincidentally start spoofing my phone number on their calls (they use VOIP and can add whatever information they want to appear as "Caller ID"). It sucked. I was getting bombarded with calls from people saying they had a missed call from my number. I didn't know what was going on, and neither did the tech support at my phone company. I only turned my phone on to make calls, otherwise it never stopped. The only reason the cause was discovered was one of the people who called me back had actually spoken to the callers, and he told me they sounded like foreign scammers. I told my phone company, and their response was to suggest I get a new number. When I said I didn't want that they reluctantly offered to "put in an anti-spoofing request", which apparently is a thing. It seems to have worked, which makes me think it should be applied by default to all locally issued numbers.

1:32 One of our biggest mail-order companies has that problem though. I regularly order clothes from them, in fact I think almost all my clothes are from them. But while I do my orders online instead of over the phone or mail, I am choosing the items from a physical old-fashioned catalogue, because their online store is just the absolute worst to navigate through and barely functional most of the time. And it's been that way for the past, I don't know, 20 years or however long it was ago that they decided to also create an online store.

I'm no expert on cell phones, but why would you need to switch to a new SIM card when you get a new phone? I just got a new phone last week and I swapped the SIM card from the old phone into the new phone, which is the whole point of having a SIM card. Obviously if you lose your phone or it gets crushed by a bulldozer or something, you'll need a new card, but to upgrade phones?
Also, will they not let you go into one of their stores and identify yourself to switch cards? I like the idea of them requiring a bit more than just a phone call to help prevent scams, but I wouldn't be happy if I had to go several days without a phone instead of driving to the nearest store.

They discussed possible alternatives and how much they would save me. Fine. Then they asked me to verify my account information. I was severely sleep deprived that day, and had actually looked it up to give to them before realizing what I was doing. I then refused flatly to do so, which confused the heck out of the guy on the phone. He didn't sound disappointed, just confused. So I'm guessing he didn't know that he was working for a scammer.

That didn't count towards my forgiveness period because those private companies were not eligible employers. The only qualifying places of employment are governments and non-profits. I did the same exact work for the same exact "clients" in government labs with people who had occupied those very limited positions for 15-40 years. There are only three positions total. Four if you count the supervisor. It's extremely difficult to get a government job.

The blockchain stuff was legitimately interesting, involving even programming languages in some cases, and has resulted in cases like Cash App's ability to offer purchasing of micro-stocks without needing to buy whole numbers of stocks. Banks have also been using it in their backends, though not sure how far that had gone. The NFT craze, though, was where anyone who understood tech understood how could just copy/paste the images or how the link to an image could be redirected away from it. The problem was the finance bros smelling money to be made, not those interested in it as a technology.
