Its all about logistics. That logistical capability is the strongest asset that the US has at its disposal on the world stage.
The strongest asset the US has at it’s disposal is the patriotic spirit of it’s citizens! The power of loving your country can defeat any thermonuclear bomb!
Now if only we could get (ahem) “certain” citizens to stop hating America, we’d be in a better place.
Yeah I like that saying that the US can set up a military base with a burger king anywhere in the world in 24hours
losers talk strategy, winners do logistics
If you are ever in Southern California, you have to go to the Reagan Library. It is not that political but there is an entire wing created just for Presidential Transport including a full size Air Force one when they used the 707. You can walk through it and take a picture getting off like you were the President. They also have Marine One, Limo one and other various means of moving a President. The cool thing is that the museum is run by retired members of the Secret Service, some who traveled with Presidents and have some cool stories to tell.
That's a great tip. I had no idea about the transport wing. Thanks.
There's also a 33-foot section of the Berlin Wall.
And if you are ever in the Dayton, Ohio area, you can also visit Wright Patterson Air Force Base and the National Museum of the US Air Force where they have the William E. Boeing Presidential Gallery to view a historic collection of presidential aircraft, and walk through four of them, including aircraft used by Presidents Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower as well as the Boeing 707 known as SAM (Special Air Mission) 26000, which was used by eight presidents from Kennedy through Clinton -- best known as the plane that transported President Kennedy's body from Dallas back to Washington. The entire museum is Free and great for folks who love aviation history.
The actually brought in AF1 and then built the building around it.
Dude that sounds so fucking cool its unreal. As someone living in KY I doubt I'll ever make it that far but would love to go there before I die lol
Finally someone got it right! Air Force One is a call sign not an aircraft!
Almost right. 1:37 The helicopter is usually referred to as Marine One, not Army One. Army One would be a tank. 😂I think Simon was trolling us.
@@philscott7949 Correction. He did say if the president was to fly on an ARMY black hawk it would be Army one.
@@kieronmarshall2658 Still, if the President were to travel in an Abrams for whatever reason, would that be Army One as well?
@@moshonn9318 If the vehicle is under the army's control then yes like air force one is une the control of the air force and marine one is under the control of the marines etc etc.
Indeed. Which is why Airforce Two also exists, and is the call sign of the backup plane. But in case those are destroyed, the call signs can be assigned to any plane they have available.

Growing up in Virginia and living very close to the air port here. I’ve had the honor of watching Air Force 1 pilots doing training exercises and touch and goes. It is beyond impressive seeing what those guys maneuver those massive planes the way they do.
It really is astonishing what the 747 is capable of doing, especially in the hands of a capable pilot
@JimAllen-PersonaAnd the pilots have a "maneuverability buff" when piloting Air Force 1.
Air force one gives me the goose bumps so beautiful.
@JimAllen-Persona Still doesn't diminish how amazing it is to see such a massive airframe pull those maneuvers off, especially when you consider that the 747 is the size of a large building
All Airforce 1 pilots are military fighter pilots who have 10’s of thousands of hours of flight time. They can basically fly AF1 like a fighter jet if needed to a point of course.
Incredible how complex and meticulous the planning and mechanisms for presidential travel are. It really emphasises the importance of the safety of the leader of the Free World.
How long did Slick Willie keep LAX shut down while he was sitting on the runway in AF1 getting a haircut?
@@johnstreet797Zero minutes. LAX was never shut down, and records from the time show that no flights were halted or significantly delayed by the presence of Air Force One. Only one flight was delayed at all, an unscheduled air taxi that took off two minutes later than expected on its flight plan. Snopes has a lengthy article about it.
While here in the UK on day-to-day business our head of state often goes in a car with a single police car escort to cause minimum disturbance to local people.

I live near RAF Mildenhall and when Biden came over here for COP26 I counted no less than 11 aircraft used to get him and his entourage to Glasgow for a speech. Pretty ironic that his carbon footprint to attend a climate change conference for a few hours was probably higher than the average persons in a decade, if not more.
Part of the problem of today is that there are people who consider "carbon footprint" a part of your personal metric, whether it's good or bad. Height? Weight? Age? Carbon Footprint? - Here's a hint: It's all a scam. A vehicle to push an agenda or narrative, one way or the other. This is why presidents often delay or avoid visiting sites of natural disasters . It just adds a major logistical hurdle for an already struggling area, the state’s governor is the person to quickly show up on site.
Being there in the first place gives you a significant head start so you can show up and throw shade on your political rival or cover for your ally.
@Hebdomad7 sure but it's a calculation. Is the risk high enough that the political advantage it gives your rivals worth it? If the logistics are more difficult then that also means it's more dangerous, any time you do something out of the normal routine means there is increased risk of the potential for gaps and oversights that could result in something unfortunate happening, it doesn't even have to be dangerous to be a problem, if something happens and the plane can't take off from the disaster area until an hour later than originally planned maybe that sets of a cascade that leads to the president being late to a meeting with a foreign leader which while quite likely being fine from the perspective of both leaders could be used as an attack in various ways by the president's political opponents or citizens of the other country opposed to some type of agreement with the US being considered framing it as a deliberate slight increasing the political pressure on their leader possibly tanking the deal thus resulting in a policy failure and bad press for the US president once again causing more harm than good. Sure its not garunteed that any of these things would happen especially so if considering the nessesary chain of events that would be required to cause real harm, but the fact is that they remain possibilities and it's reasonable to conclude the risks don't outweigh the benefits especially when alternative paths might work instead, executive orders to help the victims, making the resources of the Whitehouse available to those aiding the region and obviously expressing publicly your determination to help those affected.
Also why Bush just flew over new orleans during Katrina in air force one. It was high enough to not affect the helicopter flights below.
Abraham Lincoln's cross country journey From Springfield Illinois to DC was something else.
I recommend "The Eloquent President" and "Lincoln's Spys" if you are curious to read up on that journey.
That America's passenger & freight rails aren't as robustly kept up to date as they coukd be creates gaps in logistical redundancies.
When I was serving in the USAF as a fire fighter in the mid 1980’s through the mid 1990’s, President H.W. Bush came to California, and Air Force One was parked on our tarmac.
The Secret Service used our vehicle stalls to park The Beast and the other vehicles in the Motorcade.

You forgot something else the Secret Service does with the retired Beasts: they use them for driver training to practice evasive maneuvers and motorcade formations. They won't actually destroy them until they're no longer needed in this role. The unspoken reason why they chose to repurpose a commercial 747 instead of one newly built: one that's newly built could have hidden bugging or sabotage that's nearly impossible to detect once assembled, but taking one from commercial service means there is never any opportunity for that. Also, a proven low-mileage aircraft is less likely to run into problems than a brand new one. Those older Sea Kings they use honestly look the best of all the presidential helicopters. They're just so photogenic, which is probably the primary reason why they keep them around.
The 747's were brand new - not "re-purposed". Highly modded after that. We installed stuff on it and our techs flew on it (well all 6 - both VC-25A's and 4 E4's).
@@WardenWolf nobody forgot that about the beast we just don't like people talking about it. ;)
@@WardenWolf and Alan is right. Anyone who thinks they customized abused aircraft forgets that the 89th is a USAF organization, with authority to purchase new. It would be insane to use a pre owned aircraft. That's POTUS.

Used to work on Andrews AFB where the 747s are kept. It somehow feels even bigger than a regular 747 when you watch it go by on the taxiway. That, and its hardened bunker/hangar its kept in is pretty impressive in its own right.

I still remember seeing President Harry Truman give a speech from the back of his railroad car during his whistle stop tour in 1948.
That was a big day. They let us out of school so we could go to the train station.
We had a motorcade visit. Despite the fact that we were already a secured federal facility, the advance team inspected every manhole along the route and welded down every cover.
They should have called the bus Greyhound One.
The bus was made in Québec.
This caused quite a stir when this info came out in the news. When the bus was first shown, some journalist googled the builder name on it and (GASP!) learned it was not built in the USA.
Note : about 95% of artists' tour buses in the US are built by Prévost.

As I recall, from an interview with one of the presidents pilots. The reason for keeping the older helicopter, is that newer bigger ones, would destroy the garden when landing on the lawn.
For the same reason, they have small landing pads -- one for each wheel -- in the lawn.

Thanks for the video. This channel reminds me of what I used to watch The discovery channel for.
I flew home on emergency leave from Japan on Navy military standby, ie, if there was an empty seat on the aircraft I got it. I was instructed to check into the tower at every connection to schedule another flight. When I got to Hawaii I headed to the tower and, voila! AF1, in full livery, was on the tarmac next to the tower. I didn't recognize it at first but immediately knew my mistake when I enter the tower and was confronted by a half dozen secret service agents who politely directed me to where I needed to be. And I found out it was actually AF2 as VP Bush was using the aircraft. The CPO who helped me get my next flight was rather PO'd at my encounter, as the secret service had called him about my transgression. Didn't get in trouble, but the Chief was pissed! Cheers....
They went with Boeing... Hope the got the upgrade package with the doors that don't fall off.
Don't forget the upgrade package that makes sure the bolts on the wings are tight. And the upgrade package to make sure the landing gear is firmly attached.
Relax, guys. These planes were made when Boing still had the manufacturing quality that made it famous.😅
Edit: I wonder if I just stumbled on why the USAF hasn't updated to anything newer. Like they saw the quality slipping and said "Um, nah. This works fine."

The cool part about the fact that AF1 can do aerial refuelling is that they can decide to intentionally take off at a lower level of fuel, than is necessary to reach its destination, to ensure its weight is lower and therefore it can takeoff in shorter distances, as well as reach cruise altitude in less time. I wonder how often they do this.
Iirc the new presidential aircraft that’s replacing the current 747-400s is removing that capability since it’s never been used aside from keeping the pilots current, and as such save the money on installation, maintenance, and training.

Yeah. I thought it was going to be about Biden on Amtrack?
One major difference between the VC-25A and B is the latter lacks the air refueling. It was deemed "unnecessary" since it would cost a lot to make the change. The B-models aren't specific build, they are normal airframes that just get converted to as close to the current A-model as possible.
You are correct about the mid-air refueling, but your description of the airframes is off. Both A and B models are extensively modified to meet the role. That was the HUGE mistake made when it was decided to use already built airframes to make the B models. They had to be stripped to the basic airframe and totally rebuilt. It would have taken less money and time to build them from scratch.

I remember about a couple of years, maybe even a decade back, the US was looking to replace Marine One with custom built Merlin's. Having seen the large interior of a HC3, I can easily imagine a luxurious interior and just in case, an emergency rear ramp for a presidential casevac.

IMHO, the biggest defense that that train in Ukraine had was the fear that an attack harming the POTUS might be the spark to set off WW-III.
It makes sense, I mean technically speaking the US President can go almost anywhere with impunity because any nation seeking to harm them would have to deal with the wrath of the US
The Russians were told of the trip a few hours prior. Given the care with which Russian forces operate their weapons, I imagine that anyone who could have so much as thrown popcorn in Biden's direction had someone standing behind him with a pistol aimed at the back of his head for the duration of the visit.
Just in case.
The trip was done in secrecy. As far as what has been reported, Russia was informed of the visit. But I would imagine it was not informed of the mode of transport, precise time and date of the visit. Its doubtful that Russia (or separatist elements) had enough information to plan and execute an attack even if they wanted to.
@dmac7128 I think it's more likely that whatever else Putin is, he wants to stay in power, and he wants to be alive. From him on down, there wasn't a Russian in the military chain of command that didn't know exactly what would happen if they either allowed someone to attack, or worse, do so themselves, that train. If I recall correctly, the airspace above and in the vicinity of the train, rail lines, and Kyiv, was suspiciously empty of most things for the duration. No country truly wants to find out what would happen if they made a direct attack on the US President.

At 5:32 even tho its still based on a 747-200b the picture shows an E-4B not VC-25A the E-4B has the extra hump on the 747 hump while the VC-25 doesn’t
Don't want another Archduke Ferdinand moment.
Or a JFK moment in particular .
@richardshiggins704 comparing the consequences of the spark, the Great War, now known as WW-I, had a greater effect.
Gotta love the way that Simon Whistler can make the most obvious of error sound like gospel!
I'm guessing, but steam trains might be good because they are probably not susceptible to EMP. ;)
Fun fact..... According to the USSS, the first president to use a armored vehicle was Franklin Roosevelt. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Secret Service increased protect around the president. In December 1941 they added the first armored vehicle to the fleet, a armored 1928 Cadillac series 341-A town sedan. This vehicle actually belonged to the infamous gangster Al Capone, but it was seized by the US Treasury Department in 1932 for tax evasion.
One of the best videos on this channel, I loved it!

I travelled on trains for 78 years with Cornpop. - Joe Biden 2024
On September 11th, Airforce One, and two F-15's were the only aircraft flying. They flew over the Chicago area east by southeast.
Great grandpa herbie served as part of FDR's security when he stopped in our town in 30s
True, but it's dependant on which branch is piloting. E.g. the Helicopter at 1:34 is a Sikorsky that is usually piloted by Marines, hence Marine One
The black hawks are designated as Marine One not Army One. Just saying.
He says an ARMY helicopter is Army One, which is correct. If he said Marine helicopter, then it would be Marine One.
Very good video. I note the interior pictures of Air Force One must be quite dated as there are more ashtrays than chairs.
With the current age of the US president, there might be soon a wheelchair one.
Wouldn’t be the first president to be in a wheelchair
Probably, the "Ambulance one",or,better yet - the "Pharmacy one".
LOL. Walking Frame One?
Good thing congress vehicles don't get names. There'd be an entire chair force.
More like Walker One.
At 7:00
757s with minimal paper trail following Air Force One....
I think you're confusing the "Air Force 2" with the little known Learjet 25 with no tail number that always lands at a different airport near where Air Force One lands....
A bit on the train used in the thumbnail, it is an EMD SD70ACe lettered for the 41st POTUS (4141). It's early life consisted of that of any other locomotive operated by the Union Pacific; hauling freight. Later in life it sat dormant. Finally it made it's last run as one of 2 trains pulling George Bushes funeral train leading the train with George Bush proper. The other train was lead by Union Pacific 1941, a military commemorative locomotive p. It's now sitting as a display in Texas, and it's engine, suspected to have been given to another locomotive (The Chicago Northwestern(CNW) Heritage unit) which was having engine troubles at roughly the same time. The CNW unit still being used today. For a gauge on the SD70ACe's age, the oldest of the SD70ACe has been in service since 2005, and the SD70 family can be traced back to the '80s
I’ve visited the White House 8 times. But the more impressive times I’ve seen a president were the few times I was able to see 2 presidential motorcades, 1 liftoff of Marine One from the White House lawn, and the 1 time I saw the president arrive by train. The president was to make a public speech a few miles from where we lived. I thought it might be fun to see. I drove over, fought my way to a residential street to park, and walked over to the entrance of the parking lot where he was to speak. 1 entire business area street was blocked off with security and rows of airport type security crossing the width of the street. It was surprisingly efficient. I was early and made my way to the fence line where the train tracks were. I could see the grand stand with the podium not too far away. The wait was almost an hour and the crowd started cheering as a train approached. The train wasn’t as nice looking as I expected because it wasn’t the president. As it began to slow down, many casually dressed secret service agents began jumping off the train. They made their way to a freight car with open doors, went inside and began exiting it with piles of campaign signs with wooden pickets attached. They started handing them out to the crowd. When that was finished the train began pulling forward. The agents were stationed at the fence line and the small grand stand. About 15 minutes later the presidential train was approaching, its whistle blowing. The crowd was getting fired up. I told the woman next to me not to wave her sign in front of me since I’d be taking pictures. The president climbed off the train, approached the podium, was introduced, spoke about 20 minutes, shook more hands, waved from the rear platform as the train pulled away and it was over. We we ushered to leave the area where we entered. All of the security magnatonomer machines were gone. Then it was another traffic jam to get out of the city. It was interesting, don’t have to do it again.
The Marine One liftoff from the White House lawn was fun. And once it took off, 2 more were in the air, from where they came I don’t know. But they did indeed all scramble when they were above the south lawn, then the 3 flew off to where they were going. I’d love to fly on Air Force One once, or at least see it, but I doubt that will ever happen.
If I were president I think I'd make it a point to take the train or the bus as much as possible. Just to enjoy the journey as much as I can. I'd also commission a destroyer or cruiser to serve as my executive water-borne transport. I guess Navy 1, but I think I like the sound of Boat Force 1 better.
President has bosses to answer to. The corporation overlords want their favours, that's what the donations are for. He doesn't have time to dilly dally.

Whoever wrote this for Simon was very much "MURICA! WOO-HA!". I wish Simon read this on one of his other channels, like Brain Blaze. I'd love to hear his commentary on this one.
I once critiqued a video of Simon’s and was told that I was using antisemitism towards him. I am subscribed to most of his channels and enjoy watching them just as much as anyone else, and when I have an opinion, I am always courteous and follow the guidelines! But even more importantly…I too am Jewish! That’s right! So just a heads up… Careful what you say, because even the most innocent comments can get you chastised here. It’s shameful what our modern, 21st century has become. Shalom and be kind!
In the modern security state, the logistics for transport by train is very onerous. I would imagine their would be a lot of planning done to plot a precise route taking into account all of the rail traffic, grade crossings needed to be secured, bridges to be inspected, and all of the track for that matter. The last thing we need is a derailment due to track problems. It could also cost private carriers a lot of money to keep track clear along the route. All of the rails with the exception of the Northeast Corridor are own by private freight companies.
So,no "Doomsday trains"???
Ae - the discusied" missile carriers??
@@DuneRunnerEnterprises If one existed, it would have been a dedicated rail link owned by the federal government and used exclusively for that one purpose (CoG). As for "missile carriers", that program never materialized. The Peacekeeper missiles ended up deployed just like Minuteman III until they were decommissioned.
And incidentally, all military installations that are connected to the national freight networks depend on private freight carriers like CSX or Norfolk Southern to move stuff over the rails. I believe under federal law, they are supposed to prioritize military transport and in time of war, the national freight network can be brought under direct government control.
if the president was flying in a Cessna 152, that little Cessna 152 would become air force one.
if he ridez a bike doez that become pushbike one
correct
The present one can't ride a bicycle
@@sprint48219I just spit my food out. They have to protect he from himself 😢
ONLY if that 152 was owned and operated by the Air Force. It isn't that difficult of a concept
I Rember seeing one of those early 2000's science shows(about the beast), they layered bullet proof glass about 5-6 inches thick on a stand. They used a 50 cal rifle and 2-3 bullets they broke through it to the other side, shooting the exact same spot. Now this test was done with not moving armored glass. "if" god forbid the motorcade came under attack the beast would be speeding the road at 75+ MPH and not sitting still. Also no secret service shooting back.
And still, Taylor swift spends more on Jet fuel.
☠️😂☠️😂 she can afford it
Please create more of this type of video, involving other president's, around the world.
The VC-25 heavy maintenance and the construction of the new VC-25B aircraft are done in San Antonio, along with the E4B.
There's also a Presidential train car at the American Transportation Museum in St. Louis. This car was also used in either some movies or a TV show (Truman comes to mind).
Oh, and you can walk through an older version of AF1 (the 707 variant) at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
I followed Regan's motorcade in a blizzard from the American Legion Bridge to to Germantown where I got off. We were basically to only cars on the road. Apparently he wanted to go to Camp David for the weekend and blizzard prevented him from flying.
Does Air Force One come with a fold-down diaper changing station? I mean for a current president that is.
Geriatric section 😂
I used to do engineering on similar engines and there was a notable feature we incorporated that would allow for the jet engines to run even if a bullet goes through the CPU of the engine computer, i assume they had at least that in AF1
Meanwhile a former president who may be president again gets a few secretaries LARPing as Secret Service.
Wow! Dude you all are so upset that women can do stuff that you're not qualified to do. What's next blacks LARPing as secret service agents.
I live in Washington.D.C. and I see them flying that new VH-92 every single day, almost all day! They are performing a lot of test runs with it. They just fly around in circles all day. They come from Quantico and come up and land at their secondary base at Bolling here in D.C. and then they go north to somewhere or even nowhere, and then they come back and land again at Bolling. Sometimes, they go in other directions, but they come right back and land again. Last I checked, they had an issue destroying the White House lawn with the rotorwash! I'm not sure if anything changed or not, though. So far, I saw two of them fly with a VH-3 but I don't know if they went to to the White house, though!
i bet that 50 inch plasma was the shit 22 years ago lol

When I lived in Hawaii i was going to a job behind the airport and got shooed off the road by the local police due the motorcade moving in the area. While i was waiting Air Force One took off. I was virtually under the aircraft as it rocketed into the air. It was an impressive sight to see, and be so incredibly close to.
I can imagine if the US President is going on a….let’s say 3 stop trip through Europe and visiting different locations and he is going to be making an outdoor public speech that the Secret Service has mapped out every single highest point in the surrounding area that can be accessed by a person and has occupied it for the moment the president is speaking to avoid any potential long range sniper attacks. This aspect alone is an undertaking of monstrous proportions. Not only must they find the farthest accessible high point but everything in between. I suspect that choosing a decisive location for his speech that would minimize any overly complicated research into this particular issue would help. But I’m sure that they also have tons of other potential hostile moves that could be made towards the President that they also need to be privy to.
I sure hope these Secret Service officials are paid well, because they sure are deserving of it.
