Making an EPROM Adapter and Burning Amiga Kickstart ROMs - TL866 MiniPro

  • This project was kindly sponsored by www.PCBWay.com! Today we are going to bring a Commodore Amiga A600 Back to life. It has a broken Kickstart ROM, but my Minipro TL866 doesn't support the 27C400 EPROM devices. We're going to build an adapter, then copy and burn the data to a new EPROM. Finally we'll test to see if the broken Amiga boots!

      @@MarkFixesStuff must have just been having a kind of day there. Can't wait for my situation to sort out and start backing people on Patreon. You're high on that list too. Thanks for the reply! Fun fact, my hands have never been steady. When I was modding my Saturn back in the late 90s (when I was an older teen), which I think may be relevant to an upcoming video, I was using a pair of playing cards to isolate pins while soldering. Those processors had teeny tiny legs and I'd have rather ruined an Ace of Spades than the board. I didn't know about things like flux or have particularly good tools or materials back then 🤣

      This video is more about building the adapter to be honest. This video featured the Amiga A600 which has a single ROM chip, meaning the Hi-Lo information is combined already. If you have a machine with the double ROM chips, then the Hi is in one chip and the Lo is in the other. You program the chips in he same way in the adapter, and make sure you put the right EPROM in the right socket.

    I have a lot of chips with broken legs. I use simple a round machined socket, put the IC inside, use a lot of flux and solder the chip directly in. The solder bridges the gap of the broken pin - even if the pin was broken directly at the ic body, leaving just a very smal piece of metall barly visible from the side. This sandwich of IC and socket I simply put into the socket on the board. No need to burn a new eprom there.
    Using the adapter is more important if you want your own kickstart - f.e if you want to integrate the 3.1.4.1 upgrade inside the 3.1.4 rom.

    Dear question, I have an EEPROM memory with a specific number that I could not find in the market. The memory size is 256 KB. Can it be replaced with another? It does not. have to be the same number, but of course the same size, or it must be the same number and the same size. The one is damaged is one time only read memory"TMS27PC256-20NL". The one i will used is UV EPROM"M87C257-20F1". With same size of course i will transfer data with programmer from TM to M8.
    Can do that because idont have TM eprom. I have M8 eprom.

    • @MarkFixesStuff

      I looked at the spec sheets for both and the pins look to be directly compatible. With old stuff there’s never any guarantee, but there is a solid chance that the M87 will work in place of the TMS27. Good luck!

    Interesting that you need to convert a 40 pin socket to a 48 pin for a 40 pin EPROM. 🥴

  • @rager1969
    @rager1969 3 роки тому

    Of course, once you fixed that Kickstart ROM chip, you could've just re-inserted into the Amiga rather than burning an EEPROM.

      I could have, and was tempted but the resistor leads are a bit chunkier for the EPROM socket.

    • @BertGrink
      @BertGrink 3 роки тому

      I would also surmise that since a few legs had already broken off, and another broke during the filming of the video, chances are high that further breakage might ensue in the future; with a brand new EPROM that risk should be eliminated.

      No. I was on the verge of buying one, but then someone donated a small 3D printer so I need to set that up and learn how to print one!

    It's only just my impression or between your channel and neil's any excuse is valid to put some good old smelly flux on a pcb? I'm not judging 😉

    Why wasting time and energy?
    In such a case, I inserted the Crippled IC in a round pins socket and soldered all it's legs.
    And that's all!

      Because you might like to use all alternate ROM. I’ve fixed EPROM legs in the past with leads clipped from resistors but that would be a very short video. Thank you for watching !

    Please set your iron hotter. 350 at least. I enjoy your content, but watching you repeatedly make solder balls instead of joints is frustrating.

    Nice work, Mark. I wonder if you could tell me two things:
    Will that type of EPROM work in an A1200 too? (I would obviously need two of them, ofc)
    Will that adapter board work in my Batronix BX32 Batupo? (www.batronix.com/shop/programmer/BX32/batupo-I.html)
    The reason I'm asking about this is that I would very much like to have Kickstart 3.1.4 installed in my "Miggy". I do have legal images FWIW.
    TIA. 😃

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff  3 роки тому

      Hiya Berty! Yes the same EPROMs work fine in an A1200 as a pair for kickstart ROMs. I don’t know about your specific programmer, but the adapter works like it is a 27C4096 device, so any programmer that can deal with those will work.

    • @BertGrink
      @BertGrink 3 роки тому

      @@MarkFixesStuff Thanks for the reply. Re the EPROMs, that is as I suspected, and as for the adapter + my programmer, I can't find any information so I will just take a chance there. After all, as a new member on PCBWay I was given a $5.00 coupon which exactly covers the cost of the adapter PCB, and most of the other components either in stock or in transit, so there's little to lose, right? 😄

    • @BertGrink
      @BertGrink 3 роки тому

      @@MarkFixesStuff Update: SO I've ordered those boards (minimum order 5pcs but with my coupon I only had to pay shipping and a paypal fee, $10 in total), as well as two of those EPROMS and the other bits I didn't have already. I reckon there's a strong possibility that I'll have to mod the bejeezuz out of the adapter board to achieve my goal, but whatever it takes, I am confident I can make it work, somehow. Now I just have to wait until it all arrives from China.... ho hummm 😴 couple of months by the look of it. lol
