Throughout my nursing program I worked part time . I had no choice. It was hard but I did it # BSN/RN

Working for me is not an option , it's a must , I'm too partial to having transportation, health insurance , roof over my head , etc.
If you can go to school without work distractions that's great, few of us have that option.

It's a sacrifice , no doubt , I'm just saying I have to work while going to school , I have to keep a roof over my head , I would be homeless if I didn't work , plus no public transportation where I live. Those who have family to support them while they go to school , they are blessed , I don't have that. For me , it's about the chance to save lives and improve quality of life that makes me want to be a nurse yes , the pay would be better than my current job , but knowing I make a positive impact is what motivates me.

The semester I did my first clinical class I was able to handle a 40 hour work week and still get good grades. By the time my first MedSurg clinical started I had to cut my work hours and only work three days a week. Because I needed to accommodate for more study time. Working in nursing school definitely is not easy so far but it's also not impossible. I've managed to find ways to make it work. Well I might not always have time for family and friends and a social life I am in high honors in my nursing school.

  • @Mscuriousandfab

Working is doable depending on the person. At my hospital, 30 hours is considered full-time. I am in a BSN program an my curriculum is a lot busier compared to my friend that attends a ASN at a community college. I personally, dropped my hours to 20 hours/week- the minimum to keep health insurance and accepted the fact that I will be SUPER broke for the remaining of the program (1 year). It's important for me to pass my classes well and keep my sanity. One girl from our program was in a car accident due to sleep deprivation related working full time, dealing with lectures, clinical, family, and study time. Last semester, I was admitted 3 times to the ED due to problems related to stress. In my opinion, so not worth it. I dropped my hours, I am making it work because Burn out starts at nursing school and we all know it.

    • @TheNurseNook
      @TheNurseNook  7 років тому +14

I accepted being broke as soon as I started the program. It is so important to take care of ourselves as future nurses! If we don't take care of ourselves we can't take care of our patients to the best of our abilities. I'm happy you dropped your hours, your sanity is so important!

I'm going back to school soon and thinking about working 1-2 days per week (I'm a cocktail server and training to bartend). I'd also consider being a CNA, but that would be for experience, not money...I suppose they're equally important. I plan to keep making videos throughout my journey, so I guess we'll see! I start nursing school in august and I already took every class that I could possibly take before I applied for my seat so I have 4 semesters left and 8 credits each of those semesters which is considered part time at my school. Plus I have a very low low stress job where I will be able to study 60% of my time spent at work so I'm gonna work full time. My advice to people that have to work and go to nursing school is get what you can out of the way to make your work load not so heavy each semester

I totally agree that it depends on the person. I work around 25 hours a week but I only survive because I'm a crazy planner and organizer. For others in my class, work was the primary reason they didn't pass one or more classes with a 76%. Going in I heard all these horror stories about how I'll never have time to do anything which totally isn't true (not always lol). Anyways, I think your advice was very spot on :)

I’m a single mom to a toddler, so I have to work through school to support my girl. I’m finishing my last semester of prerequisites this summer, so when I hit my first semester of nursing school, I’ll definitely have to go down to prn or part time. But I absolutely couldn’t do it without my support system (aka my parents) who provide free day care. And student loans are gonna have to happen, which sucks, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

That's Awesome! I'm currently attending a CC to transfer to a 2year ADN to BSN program. (This way was much more affordable for me) And I'm leaning towards the Neonatal field but being that there are a variety of fields to choose from I'm pretty much open to anything. I usually work 3 12s NOC shift. If I go to part time, I lose my health insurance coverage and I need the top notch coverage as I have Crohn's Disease.
I also have student loans from previous degree, and have to pay rent. I would not be able to take out additional loans for basic living expenses.

If working is a must like it is for me...try saving as much as possible (income, school refunds, tax refund) while doing prerequisites and by the time it starts getting tough you could possibly have enough saved you could work a part time and the money saved can supplement. It sucks but I’ve saved every penny I could with 2 kids so that when nursing school gets hard I can cut back working and not suffer financially.

Here in Brazil you need to find a job, WHEN you find it, you work and now can think in study.
But, if you want to study in a Federal University, the bests, you can not to work because the most of them is integral period, so, you have a problem.
In the end, the Public Universities are to rich people, and the private are to poor peoples.
Its funny to not say sad.
To be a sucessfull people here you need to be rich or a genius, and we have a lot of genius, but the government kill us in many ways you can think.

Jesus died for you, he was buried and he rose again according to the scriptures. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is the Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved! Please turn to God, repent from your sins and ask the Lord Jesus to enter in your heart. He loves you and he wants to forgive you and save you. God bless you! ❤️
