    Murdoch, your video came up in my UA-cam thread and I have to say, you have explained this extremely well. I am 54 now playing off 2 having been scratch to 1 most of my days and narrowing the stance has really helped me to get the turn just like you described. I had started hitting my irons thin resulting in weak shots off to the right but now after your video I am compressing the ball again like I did years ago, all because of narrowing my stance. Wide stance ok, the club is made longer so you get more speed if you shallow the club properly on the downswing. You don't need the big turn if you start your downswing slightly before your hip turn. Stack and tilt! The best way to swing a golf club!! I'm 64 years old and it has improved my game significantly!! Many pro's are using it now. Eliminates all the unnecessary shifting.

    • @murdochmcewangolf
      @murdochmcewangolf  25 днів тому

      Thank you for your comment! I’m personally not a fan of the stack snd tilt as it can put a huge stress on the loser back. Don’t you’re not very flexible or have issues with the back this can become very challenging a method (in my experience). I’m glad it’s working for you and that’s the main thing! Finding a method that works most consistently for the individual and can be repeatable

    As an "experienced"😉 glofer. I notice a narrower stance helps because my back swing ( D-3h) is a lot shallower than my (4i-9i). I really haven't tried choking up a bit. I need to try choking up a bit.👍

    • @murdochmcewangolf
      @murdochmcewangolf  Місяць тому

      @@majscrap2629 thank you for your comment. Like I mention in the video, it’s relative somewhat. Longer shafted clubs will be shallower than the shorter as you’re standing further from the ball if you set up and swing well from good posture. Check your range of motion (turn wise). Backswing length will determine how far down to grip. But yes, I’d say holding down on your whole set will do more good than harm. Shorter clubs you want strike quality for ball control and accuracy so never want to feel like you’re booting these. 👍🏼

    Well, I think tournament professionals should follow your advice; and, not just amateurs. It was very noticeable at last years Open, on the hole that ran down the side of the railway line, that players were getting stuck and blocking the ball out to the right. The idea of the wide stance goes back to Hogan's Power Golf. But, even if it did work for him he was able to slide his foot in the downswing. Modern day players are too big to do that.
    And, there is a way for a player to discover the exact width of stance that is right for them.
    Just simply stand with your arms by your side and push your body around with the left side of your right leg. You will have to find the exact width of stance that enables you to push your body around with your leg.
    And, really, when a player gets into their address position they should press forwards slightly with the left side of their right pelvis. But, when a player goes out wide with their right leg they are unable to do this.
    And, a player is able to use their height with a narrower stance. Bobby Jones would be a perfect example pf this. He actually had a narrower stance than the one you advocate. And, when we look closely we can see that Jones cocked his head to the side in a different way, to other players. The video where he is practising alongside Horton Smith and Tommy Armour clearly shows this. And, this is how he was able to make such a big turn with such a narrow stance. Jones cocked his head to the side by pushing back with the lower left part of his neck. And, kept pushing back through the course of his backswing. And the speed that his arms moved back was never greater than the force with which he pushed back with the lower left side of his neck.

      @@DASH1ful thank you for taking the time to write this detailed comment! This is why golf is such a fascinating game isn’t it? Hogan, Jones, Tiger, Scotty etc.. all have a unique aspect to their swings. Everyone on the planet that plays golf will too. I always try and advise on the 80 / 20 rule and keep that focus around impact dynamics being extremely solid and high in the focus point. Also, (and so many coaches seem to forget this) the need to understand the golfers learning style and limitations.

    • @DASH1ful
      @DASH1ful Місяць тому +1

      @@murdochmcewangolf Yes, 80 / 20 is the magic number. The left side of the head; and, the index finger side of the left hand have to work as antagonistic opposites in the transition. The head reacts against the left hand, as it fuses against the right hand. The left knee reacts against the hand, also; and, pulls the right side around and pushes the left side around. But, the knee can only arc its way round so far before pressure on the ground with the left foot resists against it; and, redirects it in towards the body.

    • @murdochmcewangolf
      @murdochmcewangolf  9 днів тому

      @@ianbrownlie3269 Hello Ian, thank you for your comment. This isn’t uncommon at all with senior golfers. It’s mainly due to club head speed. For the driver to be noticeable in distance gain from the 5 and 3 wood for seniors, there needs to be a minimum speed or it’s simply not worth using.
      Often a too wide a stance with a driver (along with gripping full length) is a natural instinct for a golfer as this seems ‘natural’. With the possibility of restricted and slower rotation as we get older, this needs to be considered. This video will highlight this and I think you’ll benefit.
      Can I add that you try 3 practice swings once you’ve gripped down the driver and narrowed your stance. With each of these swings, increase the SWISH sound.. so in other words, imagine you’re increasing the clubhead speed 1 mph on each swing. The forth is the swing with the ball.. make this the freest of them all. Focus on contact being centre hit rather than worry where it goes. Hope this helps you 👌🏼🙏🏼
