The coolest thing about Misunderstood is how the solo was made. John Petrucci wrote the solo, played it, then reversed the recording. He then learned how to play it backwards and recorded himself playing it backwards. He then reversed that recording again and put that final distorted version into the song. The final product was the original solo, but it sounds so weird and distorted because of all of the reversing.

@@ls02011 The self-titled is under-rated in general, I personally far prefer Illumination Theory over Octavarium. I just feel like Octavarium goes too far with the atmospheric spaces which makes certain parts of the song feel empty. Furthermore, due to these "empty spaces" the song always fails to grab my attention so I always feel completely disengaged when listening to it for the entire 24 minute runtime. For a while, they were doing something really cool with their albums where the end of one album would be the beginning of the next.
The record static sound at the end of Finally Free on Scenes from a Memory is the first sound you hear at the beginning of The Glass Prison on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
The keyboard fade-out at the end of Losing Time/Grand Finale on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is the same as the keyboard fade-in on As I Am on Train of Thought. Also Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is the Sixth album, and has 6 songs, if you count the entire Title Track as one song.
The piano note at the end of In the Name of God on Train of thought is the same piano note that begins The Root of all Evil on Octavarium. Train of Thought is the 7th album and has 7 songs.
The piano note that begins Octavarium, also ends the same album, which ends this cool little trend. Octavarium is also the 8th album and has 8 songs.
Just a cool little thing on some of the albums, but you probably already noticed that, being a huge fan.

Octavarium’s my favorite song of all time. It’s the whole reason why I wanted to become a musician and study music to the point where my main objective is to write a song that makes me feel the same way that all the movements in Octavarium made me feel. 9. Breaking All Illusion, I have similar vibe from previous song but better.
    8. Voices, just listen it mindfully.
    7. Trial of Tears, "welcome to the wasteland..." give me chill everytime!
    6. Home, I mean the sitar sounds, the stories, the moans, what's going on here?
    5. Metropolis pt 1, I like the instumental sections.
    4. In The Presence of The Enemy, it has Castlevania vibe! Love it.
    3. Learning to Live, this song sum up how I see the world around me and my position within the world itself, "I look at the world but see no understanding... I begging you from a bottom of my heart to shows me understanding."
    2. Octavarium, a masterpiece but for me the magic is wear off if I listening to it daily.
    1. A Change of Season, this song affected me as similar as Norwegian Wood to Haruki Murakami, I found a character to be writen by listening to this song.

    My list:
10- Pull me Under: it would be disrespect not to list this song, a classic.
9- Fatal Tragedy: Iconic Solo that gets me every time paired with brilliant song writing.
8- A Nightmare to Remember: Similar to glass prison, a solid heavy dt song.
7- Another Day: this solo hits different to put it rather bluntly.
6- Dance of Eternity: a classic, with good reason. Just an all round awesome song.
5- The Glass Prison: One of the heavier dream theater songs, sounds fantastic.
4- On the Backs of Angels: A masterpiece, cream of the crop when it comes to song writing.
3- Under a Glass Moon: a classic, one of the best dream theater solos period.
2- Panic Attack: Definitely one of my favourite songs, a total classic that captures the essence of a panic attack.... Oh and with a kick ass solo.
1- Octavarium: Self explanatory, incredible song.

I'd say Voices is my favorite DT song. My dad would talk about Awake ad nauseam, and for good reason. This is one of many albums I grew up listening to and, to this day, Voices remains one of my all-time favorite songs. The dynamics within the song create an amazing atmosphere, the vocals are fantastic, some of James' best in terms of expression, the synths sound much better than on their later work (it's a huge gripe of mine with Metropolis Pt. 2, though I still love that album to death), the lyrics (while definitely jarring) are super fucking awesome. My dad would drive around with me and my brother and he'd explain lyrics in songs and have us think about what they mean. He did this with Operation: Mindcrime and Awake, and it helped me tremendously in appreciating great writing, especially within songs. Voices in particular is a song that I've never stopped listening to. I somehow still find something new in it that makes me love it even more after hearing it for almost all my life (for context, my earliest memory of this song is when I was 5, and I'm now 20). This song still gives me chills, and remains to be my favorite from DT.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

I've had this idea in my mind for awhile, didn't know where it came from but it was there, and I liked it a lot. I didnt listen to a dramatic turn of events much, just a few times when I first found out about them (partially because of you!). That idea actually turns out to be on the backs of Angel's intro, I had never even given a thought to that being this song, but oh my god I now realise just how much I LOVE it! I think that has gotten me even more into DT. Dont get me wrong, I fucking love DT but I thought I had heard all good there was to hear with the universally accepted "good" albums but I'll definitely have to give some of the underdogs a listen again. Thank you for getting me more into prog, it's an amazing place to be. I see how much you love opeth, so I've been trying to listen to that too. I originally was turned off by the more guttural vocals but I think I've come more to just appreciate the music and the nuance now. They are all extremely good musicians and I certainly will listen to more. Thank you Mike, you've broadened my horizons multiple times now and hopefully more in the future. Rock on dude 🤘

  • @elymamasig

Yep. I feel you right there. It's so hard to choose. That's why I don't have a Top 10 DT songs list (and I don't even know if that's a bad thing). It's because everytime I hear some DT songs, my emotions and my conclusions go different every day, even right now. I always listen to any DT albums, from start to finish, and at the end of the day, I still get to feel that kind of satisfaction.
So my epic conclusion is, Dream Theater is one of the greatest bands, for me, that exist today, not only because of the technical or emotional aspects of their songs, but because of their 'colorful' (if you may) catalogue that you can dive into. 😊

Imho the intro to Octavarium could not be any shorter. It sets up many different melodies that happen to consist of long notes and long phrases, and it also needs to do that in kind of a sneaky way, as you almost don't realize that many melodies throughout the piece have already been presented - they just click right into place for you and you don't really understand why. Plus, it needs to fade in from silence, so I think it's actually just the right length.

Metropolis Part 1 is the prequel to Metropolis Part 2, so I think it's probably setting up the story for Metropolis Part 2.

Ironninja777 When it was written, they had no plans on writing a part 2. It was just put on there as kind of a joke.

Alright, I went and properly listened to all of the songs from the list I wasn't really familiar with and I gotta say I absolutely love Ministry of lost souls, Misunderstood and On the backs of angels. I'm definitely gonna have to give the whole albums a proper listen now. As good as Images and Words, Scenes from a Memory and Octavarium are, I should have branched out more instead of just listening to these albums on repeat, hah. I'm really glad this list finally prompted me to do that. Thanks!
Also, when you start hearing number 4 all of a sudden, does it mean you cannot fast travel?
EDIT: Well, I just finished my first full listen to A Dramatic Turn Of Events, and damn.... these last three songs together surely have an impact.

Kind of shocked you didn't include anything from SFAM. Also, I wanted to point out how you included Metropolis and Outcry, which according to the side by side analysis of IAW and ADTOE, are each other's counterparts in the same way that On the Backs of Angels is to Pull Me Under. Also, it'd be cool to have a video of your opinion on that whole fiasco, the similarities between ADTOE and IAW, and how each song is structured and how they mirror each other. More DT content for nerds like me
