Wow at first i thought this was a speaker box build.. but then realised in the end was more of a thubla as we indians say.. watching your work and detail and keeping everything clean at all times was amazing. Beautiful work there.. really enjoyed that
I often wish I had a larger workshop, but then I see a man like you with such a skill making good use of your resources. Excellent work, you are truly blessed of God.
The Cajón, with and without strings, was invented in Perú in the 1700's. In the 1950's the strings were added in Trujillo and Arequipa, although it was considered "cheating" by some of the greatest players (in the sense that it helps you get a sharp tone without applying as much strength).
Elyasaf ! Like you said your wife got bored in 10 secs, i also got bored but kept watching it patiently till I was going to shut my eyes due to sleep and suddenly woke up as at that point the test sound started. Wow man 2 thumbs up. Besides wood working, I am a musician too and play Flute, Piano, Violin and Tabla. We can make a good team as your skills at cajon are extra ordinary. GREAT job anyway.
Before I get too far into this...please, please, please, make or buy a push stick!!! Okay. Nevermind. There is a push stick. Just a little awkward at the beginning. I am VERY impressed how well the initial kerfs from the Tablesaw blended to the final cut of the Bandsaw. I'm also impressed by the home made splining jig...and the ingenious Glue Comb. All in all, very very nice work Eli.
The cajon really is Peruvian friend, in Spain they made a modification with the strings sounds good but the real drawer is without strings. It is not critical friend, because you do a great job I am also woodworker. Greetings from Peru.
Excellent job, man!! Slightly unusual method of construction but beautifully unique because of it. I wasn't overly skilled in woodwork when I was at school (over 25 years ago) but the older you get the more appreciative of things you can't do and just have to accept some are born with or develop a skill in life, like we all do and have, and your skill is making a bloody good unique cajon. I could see many percussionists envious of a cajon like that.
Nice Cajon, musical instrument of Peru, typical of Creole music, I'm glad to know what you like in other parts of the world. One of the many good things about my country. I have seen many cajones made but I think this is one of the best built. Gracias Totales Thanks total
That was awesome! Got Toca Rivera's seal of approval. Send me just one... I think I could definitely endorse this beautiful piece of woodworking. I caught a glimpse of amazingly different sounding pitches. Among my other talents is the art of wood working so, "GOOD ONYA ELYASAF!!
Your project was beautiful. Watching you work was incredible, your skill is incredible, and your playing is so much fun to listen to. I've never heard of this instrument before, but I love its voice, and you bring it out wonderfully.
Nice build! I would encourage the use of a push stick/ push block on the fence side of the table saw to help reduce saw binding and loss of fingers. Place it on the work piece near the cut line and push it past the blade.
Well done! Without any narration I could follow your line of thought right to the end. Sounds good too, for the sound quality, UA-cam can deliver right now. Liked.
Very entertaining, I think everyone was wondering what the hole was for. Then it turns out to be a brilliant instrument. Nice work in a very compact workshop.
I watched to the end, mostly to find out what a "cajon" is. "Hmm. Solid sides, thin plywood top and bottom. Ah, a hole. An instrument of some kind? Is it going to be the strangest guitar I've ever seen? Maybe some kind of zither? Hmm. Looks done and it's just a box with a hole in it. Wait, what are those C shaped blocks for? Metal Brushes?? like for a drum? Ah! Yes, a percussion instrument with built in brushes that you sit on! So that's what a "cajon" is!" Too cool, Elyasaf. Nice work, and I learned something along the way.
Cajón is Spanish for case (like luggage). It’s said to have been taken to musical excellence by percussionists in Perú, and while the guy demoing this one is great, to hear it taken to music-contextual mastery, check out Alex Acuña.
I didn't know what you were building until the end. I thought for awhile that it was a really really nice cat bed!! So surprised . Nice work even if you scared the hell out of me everytime I thought you were going to lose a finger! I want one. Wish I could build one as well as you do!
Lovely job. Looks very nice. I feel so jealous when I see which advantages people have when they own the right tools and have good ideas and are skilled. Wish you the best for the future.
Very nice. Great rhythm as well. :-) One tip for you. When you angle the blade of the table saw, please move your fence to the other side, so you do not trap the piece between the blade and the fence. It can come out of there at high speed. It will usually happen as the blade slows down.
Amigo que es lo que pones para los tornillos , Son como unos tarugos o unas tuercas incertas , pero como son ? Do friend that it is what put screws, are like a few dowels or some incertas nuts, but as they are?
Beautiful work! I'll be honest though, as a cajon player the most impressive part of the video for me was the 10-fingered roll you played with both hands starting at 19:32. Holy moly that was cool!
I can only assume you know more about music theory than woodworking :) It's ok, just don't ever take your right hand off the piece again as it is going through the table saw :) I can sympathize with you because my son is a drummer and loves the cajon.
Ok I had absolutely no idea what you were making until the very end, but very much enjoyed your professional job. That is to cool I hope there are many more videos to follow...Great Job, Thanks
Good job. I'm going to recommend doing a bored test on your videos though. Get somebody who you trust, and ask them to watch it, and let you know when they are getting bored. Before that happens, skip, fast forward, or so something to change it up. Your watch time will go up because of it.
Esto no solo es un proyecto. Esto es arte y eres un gran maestro excepcional. (This is not just a project. This is art and you are an exceptional grandmaster.).
Beautiful job Elyasaf shweka!!! Could you, please, share the diameter of the hole (10:30), the angle of the string and the final thickness of the walls? Thank you ^^
Very impressive. I would love to work under someone who could train me to this level of woodworking. I imagine though, the number of truly skilled woodworking craftsman is getting smaller every year.
Nice work Elyasaf. I didn't know what a Cajon was until you played it at the end. Loved the bit where your camera went flying. A little too many silly comments about Mathius, which I am sure he himself finds hilarious.
Where did you find the lans for your finger joints jig? I am trying to make one just like yours. Thanks for sharing the process of making that box with us.
Awesome build! Looks and sounds great with tight punchy bass and a good slap. Great playing as well! Would you consider using a less-expensive wood for the bottom, since it isn't seen? Not anything crappy, just maybe something to save some of your premium woods?
+Jeff Mansfield Thank you. I don't see a real reason to do that, since it would take much work, and the saving of the wood won't be significant.. also, it is important to me that all the sides of the cjaon are continous, and i put much effort to ensure that. that is the reason that i make the whole cajon from only one board.
A very nice build. I also own a Hammer k3 with a little longer slider. I was real curious to see if the slider was tracking accurately enough to cut those finger joints, sure enough, right on the money. I like your router table set up and would be curious to know how you mounted it on the saw.
How has the cajon been holding up to age, humidity changes, expansion and contraction? Beautiful, as I've probably said in the past, and super video work.
Mark Young In my perspective it should be alright. Tuning might change slightly over time, but since all of the grain is aligned and species matched, even with slight expansion/contraction, it should stay in one piece with minimal warping, assuming the wood was properly dried to start with. The top and bottom are plywood, which has negligible dimensional movement.
Nice tones! The one thing that kinda worries me is the osha dust collecter, from my experience never leave a board between the blade and the fence, maybe just me but its more dangerous than careful. Go a good push stick!
I like that there is a demonstration of the sound quality as well.
el mejor cajón peruano que vi en mi vida !!!!! excelente!!!
Muchas gracias
Wow at first i thought this was a speaker box build.. but then realised in the end was more of a thubla as we indians say.. watching your work and detail and keeping everything clean at all times was amazing. Beautiful work there.. really enjoyed that
Excellent craftsmanship. It turned out wonderfully! As a side not, I absolutely love the fact it was all business and no unnecessary commentary!
+Michael Lopez thank you.
Only a good furniture carpenter knows the importance of keeping the workspace clean at all times. Very good, and nice build!
It's almost as important as keeping your ass clean.

But I'm not crazy about dangling cords when working with circular saws.
It could easily make a mess.
Walnut is such a beautiful wood. I can't believe it actually grows naturally and is that beautiful.
Outstanding work sir! I find your detailed and methodical approach to be both educational, entertaining and relaxing too.
I often wish I had a larger workshop, but then I see a man like you with such a skill making good use of your resources. Excellent work, you are truly blessed of God.
Thank you sir.

Fascinating video! You are a skilled guy. I like the way you speed up play through the "boring" parts and then go back to regular speed. High-five.
+Bill Huggins thank you for your compliments
It s amazing that you still have 10 fingers! lol
Nice job! I admire you
Impressive craftsmanship and the sound of your final project is excellent. Well done and thanks for posting.
Thank you.

+Whal also same plans for the belt sander! and you play a mean Cajon !! :p *liked*

Nous voyons très mal l'appareil maison permettant de faire les assemblages. ...
Merci
I have mad respect for Matthias but he didn't invent the box jig or dial/mechanical indexing. Pretty sure he wouldn't even take credit for it.
Excellent job, man!!
Slightly unusual method of construction but beautifully unique because of it.

Cajon? Cajoff...
gave me solid wood
nice comeback :)
Whats nr 2?..
Nice Cajon, musical instrument of Peru, typical of Creole music, I'm glad to know what you like in other parts of the world.
One of the many good things about my country. I have seen many cajones made but I think this is one of the best built. Gracias Totales Thanks total
I see Matthias Wandel's Screw advance box joint jig is getting very popular!
Nice project, awesome result. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you too.
Used a box joint jig made of aluminium just like that to make speaker boxes in the 70s.

Very nice build and sound! I am in Jerusalem every July. Be fun if I saw your work in person! Great skill you have.
thank you for that. You are very welcome. let me know next time you are around here. keep in touch.
Man, you've got the woodworking knowhow AND drumming skills.....very nice. Awesome craftsmanship!
Your project was beautiful. Watching you work was incredible, your skill is incredible, and your playing is so much fun to listen to. I've never heard of this instrument before, but I love its voice, and you bring it out wonderfully.

You do amazing work. And you have an awesome work space. Keep it up.
I own 2 different size cajons and as a new woodworker with all the tools, I’d LOVE to make a beautiful piece like yours! Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼
Well done! Without any narration I could follow your line of thought right to the end. Sounds good too, for the sound quality, UA-cam can deliver right now. Liked.

I don't know if I am impressed more by your carpentry skills or by your playing !?! Well done !
Wow! That's a lot of work and well worth it too. That is one beautiful cajon!
I didn't know what you were building until the end. I thought for awhile that it was a really really nice cat bed!! So surprised . Nice work even if you scared the hell out of me everytime I thought you were going to lose a finger!
I want one. Wish I could build one as well as you do!
The most pointless box became the most awesome one right at the very end.
+The4thNegative i did not think i would make it to the end. luckily, i am at work and nothing better to do than watch randon stuff become awesome!
Thank you for your patience....
your saw fence lease
wich kind of wood ?? i wanna try!!
Manuel Martinez ask the Palestinian whose tree was cut down to provide the wood.
Lovely job. Looks very nice. I feel so jealous when I see which advantages people have when they own the right tools and have good ideas and are skilled. Wish you the best for the future.
thank you sir
when the camera fell down, it reminded me of "blair witch project" :p
great work though . (Y)
That is one of the coolest finger joint jigs I've ever seen!
Very nice. I didn't know what a "Cajon" was. until about 19 minutes, so it was a bonus at the end to get some music. Haha
A truly disciplined craftsman and carpenter. Shalom.
Somebody send this guy a push stick.
Push sticks are for girls.
Missing fingers are for amputees.
he uses push stick when needed.
someone send him a watch made after 1982.

Very nice. Great rhythm as well. :-)

Asi es guillermo , son tarugos de metal, él las atornillo y enterro al ras con un martillo, luego saco el tornillo y siguió.

Its nice to see a craftsman at work, its even nicer to see that old school Casio looking calculator watch is still working too lol
He had a bandsaw the whole time?
and not only a bandsaw a friggin huge one with incredible resaw capacity....
Oh dang! I’ve never seen anyone with a shop that small who owns a stroke sander!
10:06 me laughing when my friend trips and falls down.
hahahaahahahaaaa
Wow a drum set in a simple box. That is wonderful.
bad ass beats at the end
Beautiful work! I'll be honest though, as a cajon player the most impressive part of the video for me was the 10-fingered roll you played with both hands starting at 19:32. Holy moly that was cool!

yup. way too much :)
And have the same box jointer jig and router lifter - nice !
What a beautiful cajon, and a phenomenal demonstration of techniques and tools. Thank you.

I'd love to know how you built that jig when you were notching the pieces for the sides. It looks so useful...
as a percussionist i would love to play this cajon...awesome video and the final product is exquisite...
Very cool! I will never complain about space in my shop ever again! nicely done sir.
thanks

no matter what Mattias shows/says, it still takes a big pair of cajones to make cajones with dangling shirt sleeves!
Very fine job, with first class material and tools. Very impressive
thank you
super nice drum! the only thing I don't have is that fancy jig for the corners.. I'm wondering if through dove tails would look nice?
sure, would look great
Nice work. Is there a schematic on how to build your joint jig? Wonderful tool.
Very nicely designed and built, you should sell them!
have you had any wood kickback on the tablesaw lately?

What a beautiful piece of work. Well done sir.
thanks
So nice to watch a pro at work. How many units did you make at once to make use of all those wonderful jigs?
Your Craftsmanship is Awesome thanks for sharing.
GBY. very good work, the talent that God put in your hands is amazing..
Where did you find the lans for your finger joints jig? I am trying to make one just like yours. Thanks for sharing the process of making that box with us.
great work and I enjoyed watching the video. Great to see Matthias's designs in action as well
Nicely done!!! Feel free to make a video on your finger joint cutting jig with the wooden gear! That is cool!
I was very surprised when it all ended with a drum! Bravo!
Приспособа для нарезки шипов - это гениально. Великолепная работа.

I LOVE your finger joint jig
How do you do those one-handed double strokes? Amazing cajón and playing
