Dude we got this a little bit before it came out here in the States. Let me explain. My dad was a merchant seaman, a chief engineer on a merchant vessel that went back and forth to the far east. Especially Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. And anyone who knows anything about ship docks knows that a LOT of things can be "found" and "chanced upon" by sailors. My dad used to get all kinds of expensive REAL stuff. High end kids toys, clothes, watches and jewelry AND - electronics. Let's just say that by late '84 - we were the only family with a VCR and TV in every room of the house - literally. I remember we had this same VCR by late '84 because my dad came home right before Christmas - and added THIS particular VCR right next to the Hitachi VCR we already had - so we could make copies from stuff we rented - hey don't judge - these were the days when you'd have to wait a couple YEARS before you could watch (and record) the latest most popular movies off TV or cable. I'll never forgot how blown my 7 year old mind was when my dad pushed that remote and it popped up and out. Somebody at the docks where my dad was traveling to in Japan MUST have had a connect with Hitachi - because we had the most expensive Hitachi EVERYTHING lol - from our TVs to our stereo system to all our VHS machines. Thank you for providing us such a wonderful home, and such a memorable childhood - we miss you dearly Pop!

Broke my D-VHS machine (JVC HM-DR10000) which I also massively overpaid for while putting in a new loading belt a few days ago. Was feeling kinda bummed out until I saw this, always nice to see more VCR content!

Glad to hear that. I've been a little bummed lately, so I decided to show this one while I still had it. Made me feel a little better.

We had this exact model when I was kid. I loved that pop out remote. It felt so Star Trek.

Nice Video. I just found a VT-61E, wich looks mostly identical but doesn't feature a detachable remote. Belts have liquefied, but thanks to your video I at least now have a clue where they should go. Thanks!

Same as the RCA made by Hitachi, but front loading.

Every VCR sold by Hitachi within a certain period (I want to say 1982-1986) was made by Hitachi, and Hitachi also made their video cameras.

The control panel that sticks out of the front of the VCR, it looks like something that would collect dust a lot.

It originally had a cover, but this one was missing it. You can sort of see it in this dark photo i.imgur.com/e8oISDW.png

This is so neat! Thank you for posting this video. My Sears VCR practically is the same as this but with a normal front panel and it has linear Dolby stereo. So please tell me...how do you exactly tune "line" in? I can set the sound to the phono input but the video still has to be R/F. What am I doing wrong?

On your model, is there a pushbutton along the bottom front (kinda below the VU meters) labeled AUX/TUNER? If so, pressing that in should switch between the tuner and line in. If that's not working, there may be an internal issue (dirty switch contacts or an IC not switching the video like it should).

@@probnotstech How do I go about cleaning contacts on this VCR? It might be the same reason why the VU meter works sporadically.

The VU issue is weird, may not be related. If you have some contact cleaner or de-oxit you would spray it into the switch itself. This is assuming the switch is directly connected to the audio and video signals. If it's just sending a signal to an IC to switch to line in, then the problem is more complicated (electrical fault somewhere).
