  • Following a number of requests and this model also being one of Matthews personal favourites we present the legendary Winchester 23.
In this video we have not one but two examples of this iconic Japanese side by side. Alongside comparing the guns Matthew also touches on why a shooter in 2024 might opt for one and what features make this a very sought after shotgun model.

Enjoyed this video. The Model 23 here in the U.S. came in lot's of variations. As far as the 23 Duck, it came in 12 gauge with 30" and 20 gauge with 28" barrels. There was also the "Classic" guns that had a gold bird on bottom of the receiver. It came in 12,20,28 and 410 with 25" vent rib barrels.

Thank you Matt great review, worth the wait. My Model 23 is as you say is a fun clay gun that I just enjoy using, gets the same 24 and 28 gram fodder as my O/U so no extra expense either. Keep up the good work.

You should do a review on the Parker Reproduction, It was the brain storm of a Texas millionaire who wanted a Parker made like the original. The parts were interchangeable with an original Parker. They came in 12, 20 and 28 gauge in various configurations. There was also a few 410 gauge sets made. Usually they were just 410 barrels added to a 28 gauge set.
The engraving was excellent and fit was perfect. Came in a very nice leather case.

Great memory! A friend of mine paid $5000.00 years ago for a Parker that had been refinished by Tom Gibbons. A very well-known name here in the USA many years ago! I remember years ago as well, they were selling "Parker Reproductions" here for $6500.00, in the white! Quite allot of money for a gun that still had to be finished!

Great video! I have always wondered what the UK thought of the model 23. Yes, we had all of the goodies on this one. Chambered in 12, 20, 28 and .410. Multiple grades, weights, frames, lengths and multi barrel sets. The 23 was well received in the US but not as well as it should have been. We were still in the grasp of the gas operated repeater craze and most thought the sxs was a bit old fashioned. The high rib made it feel like you were shooting a 101. They are still in demand here and command a hefty sum for a NIB or excellent example. The model 23 is a fine design but was probably built 40 years to early for our market.
It would be great if you could find a model 21 for review as I would like to hear your thoughts. Please forget about the model 24 as 'agricultural' is a charitable term for it. A common description is "the frame and barrels look as though they were 2 hammerless single barrels welded together". 🤣 As a Winchester fan that is hard for me to say but in this instance it is probably true.🥲

There was a Model 23 made with 27" barrels and a plain blued frame. Looked like the one you had in the video

I've got a Winchester 23 'Waterfowler' 12ga. 28inch barrels, solid rib, 3inch chambers, black/blued receiver, gold plated trigger AND screw in ' Winchokes'
Dead ringer for that Waterfowl, except for the chokes were factory fitted.
Dropped $3800 Australian pesos on it about 12 years ago, second hand. And having bags a tonne of ducks with it, hand over heart, I'd say it was worth every cent! Had someone offer me 5k for it.
A bloke I hunt with owns a gunshop and 'jokes' that he's got first dibs on it if i drop dead!!!

And now the bad news: that effing automatic safety... truely the Devils invention, but easily removed.

I had a straight hand stock, splinter forend 23, which the dealer told me was called the model 23UK. That was nearly 30 years ago. It was bored skeet and quarter and was a lovely gun to carry about for walked up shooting. Like a nitwit, I sold it to take up trap shooting. 😢

Thank you for your comment, yes the 23 UK/European was marketed for those that preferred the traditional English S/S feel. They are still about. Kind regards, Matthew

I have actually shot one of these, they do not fit me well. I do have the 12, and the 20-gauge, Browning BSS. They fit me well and are very well made as well! Great blood pressure lowering video!

Now you've done SKB and Winchester SxS perhaps you can review Miroku made SxS. In Australia the Winchester 23 competed with the SKB and the Miroku Model 500 which was imported by Fuller as Stirlings ( they were also imported to the USA as Charles Daly's and versions were made for Browning as the BSS). Miroku branded model 500s were also available. I would say far more Miroku made guns were sold than Winchester SxS or SKBs in Australia and I suspect world wide. The Miroku made gun unlike the SKB and Winchester which are monoblock designs, featured chopper lump barrels. Miroku also made sidelocks, both Miroku and Browning branded. I have a Model FEII which is a H&H pattern SLE .

The 23 is not a reincarnation of the 21. The 23 is a good quality gun that competed directly with the Browning and the Ithaca/SKB. It was affordable but not cheap and indeed very good as are its direct competitors. The 21 was a premium shotgun meant to compete with the best in the world. It was largely made to American tastes, often with a pistol grip and beavertail, but it was much more expensive. Check used prices on the two. The 21 is invariably pricier by a lot.

    • @eastfieldgunroom
      @eastfieldgunroom  7 днів тому

Thank you for your comment. My comment about the 23 being a reincarnation was simply that it was the first side by side produced by Winchester since the 21. I understand that there are differences. Thank you for sharing the extra information. Kind regards, Matthew
