  • No combination of rifle and cartridge has a more storied history in American lore than the Winchester Model 70 chambered in the flat shooting, hard hitting, easy recoiling .270 Winchester. Popularized by the late Outdoor Life writer Jack O'Connor, this combination of both rifle and cartridge are as sought after today as they were four generations ago for good reason; it looks beautiful, shoots great, and brings home the game. Take a look at this latest version made by FN Herstal that, with its epoxy bedding and free floated barrel is actually more accurate than the venerable and highly collectible Pre-'64. Then, we'll quickly load some ammo for it and take it to the range for some shooting fun!

My model 70 in .270 once lived in Maine and belonged to my big brother Ed...We lost Ed in a Kayaking accident off the coast of Maine in 2016...The rifle is a Classic Sporter LH built in the mid 90's...He loved that rifle as much as anyone could love a thing built of wood and steel.
The rifle now lives with me in Montana and each time I take it to the field, I am reminded of Ed, his love for the outdoors and the rifle I hold in my hands...woods

Once you've outgrown all that tacticool stuff and start to appreciate beautiful classic firearms and shooting for the love of the sport, this is the kind of man you want to grow up to be. Thank you for the informative videos.
All the old shooters I used to know have passed on sadly.
I used to hang out at Morrisons gun shop in Bangor and listen to real shooters like you. I miss them all.
Thanks again sir, and God bless!

.270win has always been a family favorite for my family and I grew into it myself..
I started out with a howa 1500 youth model .243win and had bad luck with it! - I don't blame the caliber, I think it was a mixture of many things to create a disaster. (Poor marksmanship, poor trigger, wasn't paired up with the right load for the best accuracy)
Now I've grown much since then, I used a 90s Winchester M70 ranger model in .270win with absolute great results!
Went to a marlin 336 in 30/30win and I also fell in love with it, great results! Even tinkered with a 7.62x39 Ruger American ranch rifle with astounding results.
But my go to rifle now is the Ruger M77 Hawkeye, it's a modern day model 70 and I love it. Keeping that family favorite going, true control round feed and jumps over the rim if you chamber a single round. Absolutely love that rifle in the .270win.
Winchester Model 70s are spectacular too!

Grew up when Jack O'Conner was the top dog but I don't really care about his writing. I have a 270win because it works, has common easy to find components and I got a smoking deal on 27pwin brass and bullets and picked up a Ruger Hawkeye to shoot it out of. Nothing mythical or magical to me, just a tool that does a job.

My first "by my self" deer hunt, was with my grandfathers 270 back in the mid 60s as a 12 yr old. I carried it for years after his passing. Shot my share of deer with it. My 3 sons and daughter have all hunted with it, added their own successes. Now my grandson is in line to carry it. Lots of stories, lots of great times, lots. Not new anymore, neither am I, but the rifle just gets better.

@Jerry Davis Yes, In fact I am. Funny thing about a rifle, took a late summer walk with it over the farm a week ago checking on sons deer plots and reminiscing. Just the two of us. Amazing how an inanimate object of wood and steel can stir the memories. Find that I'm now at the age of trying to figure out who to pass it on to myself. Thinking a newborn grandson will be the recipient, I may never get the chance to hunt with him, but maybe he can take me hunting some day.

My first deer was taken with a 270 Remington 700 on a day lease in Junction Texas back in 1974. Used my hand loads. 130gr Hornady and a healthy load of IMR 4350. Cut a few jack rabbits into on that trip . I've had good luck getting accuracy out of 270 rifles. I do have to say the 270 is the most accurate of big game Cartridge, only got better accuracy out of 22 centerfires. I know may hunters claim the 308 and 300 Win mag are the most accurate hunting Cartridges but that has not been my personal experience. The 270 will always be magical to me.

The model 70 has been and always will be my favorite rifle. I have a model 70 carbine in 270 that i bought off my father in law almost 40 years ago. I lined it up and then never fired another shot thru it. But my dad claimed it as his deer rifle. And in those 40 years he dropped more deer than i can count. Even tho it sits in my gun cabinet it will forever be "dads rifle". Love you dad, thanks for all the memories.

I did a elk hunt last month and took a Remington Mountain rifle in 30.06. It shot just as good as my model 70 and was lighter so it went. Then distances I encountered in Colorado were like nothing I have seen before. I hunt in Georgia and Michigan with a variety of calibers and they will all get the job done. The West is different there you need a flat shooting rifle and I’m going .270. It does everything I need with less powder and less recoil than the 300 Win Mag and shoots flatter than my 30.06. I subscribed to you a while back and the information that you give out is by far the most beneficial to me. Thank you.

I have a Sako 85 in 270 Win with a moderator on and I run Fedral 130g through it. It is a superb cartridge, accurate, flat trajectory and hard hitting. More than enough for any game in Britain and Europe. I could go to an old British equivelant (which would be nostalgic and supporting my home) but because the 270 win is so prevelant in America it makes it more cost effective here. Thank you, from a grateful English man.

@ Neil Crump: The shooting world owes Britain a great deal, thanks to two cartridges alone: .303 British, and .375 H&H magnum. There are something like five main family trees from which most center-fire rifle cartridges in the world today derive, and the 375 H&H is one of those five. The .303 British is a bit more of a dead-end but enormously influential owing to its century or more of service in the vast reaches of Britain's empire. The .270 of course derives from the 30-06, itself an indirect off-shoot of the 7x57 Mauser. The 30-06 being another one of those main five branches of the evolutionary tree. Jack O'Connor, the late FA and outdoors writer who did so much to popularize the .270, also loved the 30-06. Hard not to since they're brothers.

Much respect Sir! The .270 and Jack O’Connor have a special place in my heart.
Started following and reading Mr. O’Connor in 1950.. with my Dad..Jack was Dad’s “Rifle Idol “ ..
We continued to follow his writing until his death.
Dad hunted with an 8x57 German Mauser until he retired it in ‘55 when he bought him and my Mother a matched pair os .270’s BOTH were sharpshooters… but that’s another story.
I shot a model 94 Winchester.25.35 for many years.. because I loved to stalk my game and that little rifle never failed me.. I never lost a deer…put in the right place … it was deadly… all of my bucks were neck shots.. because I never liked to chase wounded game..neck shots will drop the biggest Mulie in his tracks… and there’s no loss of prime meat.
As I aged though… I couldn’t walk hunt like I used to so I retired the little lever gun and went to the .270.
I had a 30.06 for a long time but I just wasn’t comfortable with it… My .current .270 just turned 45 years old and will no doubt last far longer than I will 👍👍
God Bless you Sir… and thanks for a sensible, ethical and knowledgeable firearms channel!

Yeah, how can you argue one way or the other? Functionally, they both do the same things. As for me, I’ll take a .270 over a 7mm mag every day of the week and twice on Sundays. The performance gain you get with the 7mm mag is not enough to make a difference, or to put up with the major recoil increase. As for which rifle…no question, give me a model 70. Btw, if it’s not raining, I’m hunting with a 1953 model 70 sporter in .270. If it’s wet, I hunt with a Ruger American .243. I’d love to pick up an older 700 CDL someday, preferably in either .270 or .30-06. However, I wouldn’t touch a Remington made within the last 25 years. Talk about crap.

I borrowed my 6.5 creedmoor to a friend, he shot a large whitetail doe today at 350 yards. It performed admirably, however when I did the calculations I quickly realized that my 270 had much better trajectory at this distance. In fact, the 6.5 only passed the 270 for flatness in trajectory was past 500 yards, well beyond the range anyone should be lobbing bullets at God's beautiful animals. In my opinion the 270 winchester is unparalleled for taking deer sized game at longer ranges

I too grew up in the 50s excitedly waiting each month for my copy of Outdoor Life so I could read the latest Jack O'Conner piece. I always wanted a Model 70 in .270, but have never owned one. I gave my 1978 Ruger 77 in .270 to my ex wife 35 years ago and she returned it 5 years later with a badly pitted barrel. I took it to a barrel maker in Boulder, Colorado and he was making .30 caliber barrels at the time. So, I ended up with an epoxy bedded action and free floating 26 inch stainless .30-06. I got it back just before Thanksgiving 1993 and the only 180 grain ammo my local gun shop had left was this new fangled Hornady Light Magnum with the Interlock bullet. It shot 3/4 inch groups off the bench so I never changed it. I think Hornady claimed 2850+/- fps in a 24 inch barrel. I chonographed it in my 26 inch barrel at 2900 fps. I took 15 elk with that rifle and ammo between 1994 and and 2015 between 50 and 450 yards. All but one were 1 shot kills and that was a 50 yard shot into the back of the ribs as it disappeared into the oak brush. It went down but I had to finish it with a second shot. When Hornady switched to the Superformance ammo I put the Ruger in the safe and put a Bell & Carlson stock with a 14.25 length of pull on a Howa 1500 in .270. In my mid 70s I can't hunt as hard as I used to, so this only has 1 elk to its credit. But it is the first rifle that really fits me, it shoots 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups and it is very soft recoiling. Over the years I've shot 30 elk and probably have seen another 30 shot. A friend's wife uses a .26-06 and widow I know uses a .300 H&H that her husband got in Alaska, but most locals here in western Colorado use something between a .270 and a .30-06. The out of state people often think they need a .300 Weatherby or .300 Rem Ultra Mag or a .338 Winchester, but they can't shoot them worth a damn. 3,000 or 4,000 ft lbs of energy is worthless if it doesn't hit the elk. In fact, the most successful elk hunter I've ever met was an old wrangler in the San Luis Valley of Colorado who used a .25-35 Winchester model 94 that he bought in 1935. He knew the habits of the herds and made 5 to 25 yard shots. You just don't need a .338 Lapua or a .30-378 Weatherby for elk. Great video and reliable info. I'm going to refer my grandkids to your channel.

I hunt primarily with a marlin in 30 30 and a Browning in 30 06 but I miss that old pump. It was my first new gun when I started hunting. My go to deer hunting calibres are the 30-06 and 270. The 270 is a old British made BSA Majestic Featherweight complete with integral muzzle break. I mostly use this for hill stalking. It's a pleasure to carry around the mountains. Since the 10th of October it has accounted for two hybrid stags (one 10 pointer) and a hybrid hind. The light rifle is a blessing when your having to drag the beasties down off the hill

But he gave it to me and I got to say it’s nice being able to learn what the rifle is capable of. It’s definitely becoming my second favorite rifle cartridge, right after 8x57 Mauser, but is my go to for any long range hunting for sure.

Then you can sight in at 100 yards and know exactly where the bullet will hit. I've found the Remington Corelok 130 gr ammo to be a bit milder than the Winchester stuff. Reviews are saying around 2800fps for the Remington ammo. I've been sneaking up on pigs and goats to 50 yards or less. I'm not real steady nowadays.

Mounted a Leupold 3.5X10. I have a picture of yesterday’s target. 3 rounds literally in the same hole at 100 yds. First time I’ve ever had a rifle that accurate. It outperforms my 80s vi rage Remington custom shop gun in 243.

I've been using my model 70 in .270 caliber for deer hunting the past 20 years. I like the .270 caliber for it's ballistics, I reload 130 grain Nosler B.T. and they do a great job for deer one shot is all that's needed if I do my job correctly. I appreciate the video especially at the range. Thank you and God bless.

I've been informed that the Ballistic Tip has been toughened since we last used them years ago. At that time, we found them entirely too frangible and explosive, with inadequate penetration, not unlike a hollow point varmint bullet. My wife's pronghorn cape was destroyed when her bullet blew a massive entrance hole in it at 300 yards. It only reached the heart and didn't exit, and pronghorns are lightly constructed like birds. I have wondered if that issue had really been corrected, as I have been leery of them since. Perhaps they did.

It's a delight to listen to a fine gentleman from my generation speak about things dear to me. I've had pre-64 Model 70's in both the Featherweight and Standard Models in .270 as well as others in the push feed. While you didn't notice recoil when taking a shot in the field, from the bench was a different story. You had to hold the Featherweight down and recoil got a little stiff in .270 or .30-06. So I think you've made the right choices. Up to .257 Roberts I prefer Featherweight, and over that the Standard. With 7x57 or 7mm-08, I would have to think about it.

I have rifles in several calibers ranging from 17 rimfire to .375 Ruger. The rifle I have shot the most game with is a Remington 700 in .270 Winchester. My .223 in a Sako Finnbar, is the ONLY rifle that shoots tighter groups at 100 yards yards and on a given day its a toss up between them. With either a 5 shot group can often be covered with a dime. I have played around with 6.5 Creedmore and 7mm Remington but I keep coming back to the .270 . I have taken 6 mule deer, 5 antelope, 4 elk and 4 moose mostly in Utah and Wyoming. I have used it for prarie dogs, and Jack rabbits and on all of these, I have only had to take a backup shot once and that was in the Henry mountains on a 4 point muley that had already been shot 3 times with a 308 by another hunter.just over the hill. I only shot it to put it out of it's misery. the guy had broken 2 of its legs and gut shot it. He didn't appear to be following up on the blood trail so I shot it. He then thanked me for shooting "his" deer. I was more than happy to let him have it as it was a nice deer if all you wanted was a trophy. I would be surprised if he got more than 10 Lbs of usable meat from it.
I have used primarily 59 grains of H4831 behind Nosler or Hornady bullets. Then I found Barnes bullets right here in Utah. They were willing to let me take a tour through their plant. To say I was impressed is a lesson in understatement. I was excited to try their 130 gr. bullets for the next Mule deer expedition but in talking with Randy and his wife Coni Brooks they both suggested I try their 110 Gr. TSX boat tail. Wow the 110 grain causes them to just drop like they were struck by lightening! I have never seen a game animal react like that. Same thing with antelope. A 14 incher shot facing head on just dropped like the Muley not a step, just instantly lifeless. When cleaning the antelope we found the bullet had traveled the length of the body and lodged in the far pelvis. After cleaning, the bullet looked just like their ads a perfectly expanded 4 petal X. My load for both animals was 60 Grains of H414, using win.Large rifle primers in Remington once fired cases loaded to 3.24 in. overall length as recommended by their reloading lab engineer. I can hardly wait to try their 130 gr. on Elk.
By the way, i bought the .375 Ruger for a trip to Africa that never materialized. The only animal I have used it on was a Jack Rabbit and you will be glad to know that a 270 grain Hornady at 2800 Feet per second, will kill a rabbit! It is in a Howa 1500 action in an Axiom recoil reducing stock. It hits my shoulder with less power than the .270 Winchester due to the axiom stock but oh the noise and muzzle blast. The first time I fired it I thought it had blown up! I am experimenting with reduced loads of H4895 powder and a 235 gr Barnes ahead of 43 grains is only moving along at 1700 FPS. My 11 year old grandson can shoot it. It only shoots 3shot groups at 1.8 inches but it suddenly becomes a 30-30! Fun to play around with.

My Dad had a Husqvarna In .270, that he hand loaded for deer with round-nose, lower velocity, when we lived in more wooded country, and used the "heavier" loads for moose, bear, elk, at longer ranges...it was quite a thing to shoot, as a teenager, with a kind of "crack!" to it, with those very fast rounds, and a kind of snappy recoil, too ;-) it's capable of being a very flexible round, and, with modern bullets, a bit better than 6.5 Creedmore at 1000 m, but with more recoil...yours is a beautiful rifle, should bring you a lot of satisfaction.
And, nice to see you shooting; nice to see a fellow who talks the talk, AND, can send a round downrange to where he's pointing ;-)
    Cheers, keep well!

Congrats on your FNH M70! They are sure enough sweet as to their fit and finish and love the CRF bolt. As boys, my brothers and I poured over every Outdoor Life and Field and Stream that my Grandpa received every month. Always wanted a "Rifleman's Rifle" with a "golden ring" Leupold on it since I was a young man. Bought 3 from the FN years all in .30-06 for the variety of bullet weights and the ubiquity of availability. One for me, a Sporter in Bass Pro Shops dark maple, a Featherweight in walnut for my younger brother, and an Ultimate Shadow in stainless for my older brother. Outfitted them with complete rifles, spring steel cleaning rods (from and older gentleman machinist deep in the Pennsylvania countryside) and cleaning accessories, Possum Hollow Delrin bore guides for the actions and Delrin "Bore Riders" for the cleaning rods (ol' boy is no longer in business, glad I got 'em when they were available), Pelican/Storm double cases, and a soft case to boot. Put DNZ one-piece, low, Game Reapers on them because I love that they are machined from one billet of metal and I feel that that process makes for great alignment from front ring to rear (great folks at DNZ, very helpful). Put Leopold Vari-X III, 40mm, 3.5-10 w/ CDS with their Alumina Flip-Back lens covers, front and back, on all 3 rifles. We hunt out west from Texas to Washington, where we live, and I thought these would be great setups for the predominantly open areas of the west and all manner of big game out here. Shopped real hard for the best rifle accessories I could find in my budget. Spent a lot but I figured, "buy once, cry once"! They were my "gift of a lifetime" to my brothers.
Love your M70 in .257 Roberts that you featured in another of your videos where you showed us the great factory bedding jobs FN is doing.

In the 1960s my deer rifle was a 1917 Lee Enfield 303 British. It got me my first deer but the bbl was shot out as one would expect for a rifle that cost $11.99 at Sears Canada. A couple of years later I won a lot of points in a company sales contest. My dear Bride wanted a new bedroom suite and I wanted a new gun. She agreed to take a cheaper suite so I could get my rifle. As I wanted to reload plus have a great cartridge I chose the 270. Another factor was the fact that 4831 powder gave great performance and there was ample surplus of it from WW2.. and a 2lb sealed tin was only $4.00 Canadian.
I decided on the Remington Model 700 ADL as the bolt was recessed to accomodate the cartridge head which was touted as making hand loading safer. I then purchased a Lee Loader for $15.95 that actually loaded as accurate loads as more expensive ram loaders. It came with a powder dipper but I did go all out and buy a Redding powder scale as I did want to vary my loads. I used Rem cases, CCI primers and 130 gr. Rem Core Lock bullets. I mounted a cheap 4 power Hakko ?? scope for $30 including Weaver mounts. Off I went to the range and sighted in. Right of the box the gun shot well but I always seemed to get a flyer in each 3 shot grouping. I also noticed that the primers swelled. After consulting a gunsmith he determined that the throat was on the tight side. So I down loaded to 57 and 58 grains of 4831 and the problem ceased. I actually found that 56 1/2 grains gave the best accuracy with 1/2 groups which was fine as I sighted in using old chesterfield cushions to rest the gun on. I shot my first deer at 150 yards and it went down with one shot in heavy woods. That was great except the Core Lock broke up and I had meat damage. I deduced that the gun had too much power for short range as the estimated muzzle velocity was about 2800 fps although that was only a published estimate as Chronographs were few and very expensive. So I switched to the Winchester Silver Tip ( long gone now) and got great results and I knew right where the gun would shoot out to 200 yards at the range and guessed out to 400 yards. I shot a Pronghorn out close to 400 yards using about 2 in hold over and down it went. Man I loved that gun.. In the mid seventies I got transferred from the Canadian Prairies to a population dense area of Ontario and only shotgun slugs were allowed. So, I sold the gun and reloading equip for $200 Can. I thought I did well as the retail price of the ADL was only $185 new when I won it.
A few years later I moved back to the prairies and have had three different calibers all fine shooters but never to the extent of the Rem even with hand loads. I always kicked myself for selling that gun.

A Winchester Model 70 in .30-06 with an 8x Unnertl scope was the most famous sniper rifle in Vietnam.

I’ve had a Winchester model 70 in .270 for over 30 years. Have killed many deer in Missouri with it and one elk in Colorado. Very dependable, reloaded with130 and 150gr Nosler ballistic tips. Longest deer kill was at 330 yds. A very flat shooter!

I found a great deal on a model 70 in .270 at a pawn shop a while back. From what I've seen, I could load my own rounds to save a few bucks, maybe, but this rifle shoots factory rounds extremely well. I'm talking the cheap, but very good Federal blue box, and others. Right now the hunting rifles are still abundant and can be had for great deals if one looks around. I love .270. I've been using a BAR in .270 for the past 32 years. God bless

I have two .270s..one is Win. Mod 70 mfg in 1950, the other is a Rem. Mod 700 mtg in 1980..love them both but the Winchester is my favorite...also have a Winchester model 70, 375 magnum, mfg in 1950 also....both mod 70s were part of my late fathers collection...in my opinion, the 270 IS the Riflemans rifle!!

As a kid I had the pleasure of shooting 270 caliber rifles nearly every day. My buddy’s dad was extremely fond of the 270 and had several different rifles chambered in both 270 Winchester and 270 Weatherby. We hunted nearly year around either for game animals or varmint for pest control and money and the 270 was used the majority of the time. Where I’m from in Texas the 270 is nearly the ideal caliber because it’ll take down any game that you’ll come across.

The .270 is one that can really turn it on. Top loads are operating in magnum performance territory without the name or the belt on the case. My only mule
deer that were taken with the .270 used the Hornady 140 grain Interlock. The most accurate in my rifle to date utilized The 130 Hornady Interlock and a stiff load of the now obsolete Hodgdon 450 and a magnum Winchester primer. The 130 grain is the gem for fast and flat for deer and antelope weight game in open country. The 150 grain was always a bit more accepted as a heavier than deer game bullet. Or maybe a bit better for somewhat reduced carcass damage at woods ranges. I would say that reduced loads make more sense for woods hunting. With modern premium bullets chosen for specific application, it's better than ever. It's funny that as I'm typing this you are almost saying what I'm typing...I guess you might say we are both on the same page. We could shoot and load together reading each other's thoughts....Edit: I'm really happy your video showed up in my recommended list. We speak the same language, just with different accents.

I used to deer hunt with a guy that I worked in a sawmill with back in the late 1960s.. He used a Model 70 in 270 Winchester. Did I mention he only had one hand? He lost his left hand in a sawmill accident. His rifle was not scoped. He would shoot, then using his left arm he would pin the rifle to his chest and using his right hand he would work the bolt. He was a deadly shot and really knew his woods lore. I was a teenage then, he must have been in his 50s., and he jokingly told me to get rid of my 30-30 Winchester and get a real rifle.

Wow!! We need a long video of simply, you repeatedly opening and closing the action, for that satisfying sound - the Model 70 action! Would be a great evening time relaxer, to go to sleep to! God's Love, Deer in the Valley!

Thank you Sir. I’ve been researching quite a bit and have landed on a Winchester Model 70 in .270 Winchester for my first rifle for a whitetail deer rifle here in Western New York. (Near Buffalo). As a retired Air Force Firefighter/Paramedic in my 60’s, I appreciate the accuracy and minimal recoil. We have many areas in Western New York that are Shotgun only, but some areas are open to rifle. Your content has helped me to make my final decision. I also appreciate the history of the cartridge and the “American Heritage” of the .270 Winchester. Thank you again, keep up the good work.
