  • From Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro to Lima, Peru, the world’s longest bus ride takes 100 hours and spans 6,300 kilometers. Hop aboard for an unforgettable journey along the South America’s Transoceânica highway!
The first leg of the journey starts on the Atlantic shore, exploring the Costa Verde, one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country. But it’s not long until the bus crosses into Mato Grasso, the agricultural heart of Brazil, where soy fields and sugar cane plantations dominate the landscape.
The region is also the home of the rodeo, a regular event in the villages along the Transoceânica route. We even find female rodeo riders here in spite of all the cultural prejudices.

Went from são paulo to bolivia, then to chile and back to brazil through argentina all by bus. It was by far the coolest trip I've ever done, have seen so many things and so much nature and culture. Some people are used to travel only to famous cities and places but that's not all there is to it. Go see the most remote places, know the people and their daily lives, their stories, eat and laugh with them it will worth your while. These places feel like home.

What a fantastic human story!! I have now binge watched all 5 episodes... just couldn't stop. In general, this is probably more substantive than watching Planet Earth, Human Planet or other similar documentaries. Despite having been to Peru, I felt I learned lot more about the people, their culture, politics, socio-economic issues and life in general in these 3.5 hours.
Dear DW - Thanks for making this wonderful documentary. Kudos to the producers, director and crew... each one of you involved here is a great storyteller... an art-form that is dying out in the over-commercialized world of American reality TV. You must keep making such documentaries because there are still lots of people like us that revel in this. Thank you!

I remember traveling some 40 years ago from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Asunción, Paraguay and finally to San Paulo, Brazil. It took several days through then many part unpaved roads. Each night we would reach the stops with restaurants with live local music by the bonfire. While driving through Paraguay the soldiers guarding the highway wouldn’t let the bus go through for a whole day because of rain afraid the bus tract will ruin the muddy highway. What a trip that was!

I once worked for Greyhound bus company in australia while i was at university. I worked in Canberra, where i studied. An older lady maybe 65-70 needed to get to Perth for her sons wedding, and couldn't fly due to medical conditions or perhaps fear of flying (i didn't pry), and she didn't drive. Greyhound stopped running a direct east/west route due to low demand. She had to bus all the way to far north queensland, across to darwin, and down the coast of western australia. Pretty much a coastal round trip of half of Australia. It was close to 10,000 kilometers and was to take well over a week, and was about an $800 return fare. She booked it and took the trip at least i saw her depart canberra. For her it was the only option, the train from Sydney to Perth is a luxury service only, costs about $3,000, there are no boats, if you can't drive or fly its the only way over there.

I started watching DW first of all for international news then came across the documentaries shown on it. The scale of variety and variation are unique and unmatched as well the camera work.. After a very long time I feel that I am watching something so articulated, refined and touching. I don't know why but I have a very keen intrest in Central Asian countries, Mongolia, Chile, Peru. But till now I have hardly came across good quality and neutral-balanced documentaries about them, now I have a lot of them, thanks to you people. For past three days I am watching DW documentaries only, here on UA-cam as well as on television. Keep making them.

This bus takes the coast road from Rio to São Paulo, along the seashore. It takes much more time between these two cities than traveling the land road, but it is really gorgeous. Better than meet heavy trunk traffic. The cost of a flight Rio-Lima is much more expensive than all the expenses of this long road trip ( bus ticket plus the meals, and the load of patience). If one doesn't have to make this trip as necessary, on the other side, it's an opportunity to travel through the farlands of Brazil and stop at some of the western main cities. Of course, the regular traveler won't have that kind of deep experience shown in this documentary. "The bus will be your home for six days". After all, I guess (as a southeastern brazilian) it must be an unforgetable way to know Lima and meet the Pacific Ocean. The Andes mountains seem to emerge suddenly in the plain landscape, in a kind of geographic magic.
