Traveling Iran by train | DW Documentary

- Iran is opening its doors to foreigners and a train ride from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea is a great way to get to know the country and its people.
The travel restrictions that are now being lifted were in place for decades. Many Iranians are hoping they will now be able to lead a freer life - and we meet many of these hospitable and welcoming people on our journey through the Middle Eastern nation.
The country’s most important rail link, the Trans-Iranian Railway, runs for approximately 1400 kilometers from the Persian Gulf via Teheran to the Caspian Sea. The journey starts in Khorramshahr on the Shatt al-Arab, the river border between Iraq and Iran.
Traveling past oil fields, the train reaches Shushtar. One of the top sights here is the historic hydraulic system, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After that, the train heads up into the Zagros Mountains. The journey is interrupted by a break for prayer. Breath-taking landscapes move past the train window until we reach the highest point not only of our journey but of the entire rail network: 2,200 meters above sea level between Dorud and Arak.
During a brief stop in Qom, travelers can refuel with sohan, a pastry made of wheat germ, flour and sugar. The next section of the track is high-speed and we continue on to Teheran at 160 km/h. The metropolitan area is home to more than 15 million people. The last leg takes us to the north of the country.
In the Alborz Mountains, we find out what role the Trans-Iranian Railway played during Stalin’s major offensive against the German army in World War II. Our oriental rail adventure ends in Bandar-e Torkaman on the Caspian Sea.

travelling by train in any foreign country is one of the most exciting things one can ever do
One can experience and understand how common people lives their life
Except in US.
Travel in bike and cars with good rest stops is even better.
Very true...all those beautiful landscapes keep moving around
As long as the coronavirus is raging, public transportation is dead.
Buses, trains, planes, no thank you.
I'd rather walk, bike, use my car, or even a horse! 🦄
Iran is a beatiful country and rich in history and culture... sending love from Sri Lanka
I agree with the second part. It's obvious by all the passengers willing to talk to a journalist it is no place I would want to live. The forced religious aspect is another deterrent.

Thank you bro .Greeting from IRAN to all Sri Lanka peoples .

well women have limited rights in the public , whats the point
Have lived and worked in Dubai for a couple of years and found the Iranian people there to be the most respectful, polite and kind people. No matter what the government says, I'd really like to visit Iran some day.
So do I
Iranians ppl are so kindness and friendly. I love iran people.
THE IRANIAN WOMEN ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL. PEOPLE SEEM VERY HUMBLE AND VERY RESPECTFUL TOWARDS GOD. HOPE WE CAN BE FRIENDS FROM THE COUNTRIES ON ALL SIDES. VERY NICE DOCUMENTARY.

5 summers ago, I traveled by train from Turkey to Tehran on the "Trans-Asia Express", not precisely an express train but a wonderful experience. I then spent 18 days in Iran & it was equally memorable, rich in history & most welcoming people. Iran is not without contradictions, as is the case with almost any land but it is a remarkable destination!
How much did it cost?? What was your budget?? I am asking as i am making an itinerary for my visit to Turkey and Iran
I have been to Iran two time and I found womens are more empowered and they are busy in every sector of life, from the business sector to the administration. people of Iran are so humble and helpful. Thank you so much dear Iranian for your hospitality.
This is the Middle East I would love to see! I am not so interested in artificial landscapes of the desert (Dubai, Saudi Arabia etc) but would love to experience the richness of ancient Iran, Syria and Turkey (technically not in the Middle East, I know). Great documentary!
Saudi Arabia is not only desert,u probably doesn't know of Asir province of ksa
This is real middle east but not ancient its modern.
Iran is so rich of nature landscapes. Beach, sea, desert (hottest place on earth), snow (best ski resort in the middle east), steppes, mountains, jungles, rainbow mountains, salt deserts and salt (pink) lakes. Iran has all four seasons.
100 percent agree with you.well said👏👌
That's you, not me
What a beautiful country it is...People are so kind and loving!!!
But not their government and law enforcement
@rdsieben they established that government by revolution, who are you to judge them
Iranians are some of the nicest ppl I've met.
I traveled from Tehran to Kashan 4 years ago and I was surprised by the quality of the train. The compartment is so clean, complimentary food and beverage were delicious, and a comfortable journey after all
God bless all the Iranian people may they always live in peace and harmony with each other and with their neighbours...Greetings from Ireland (a green oasis !)
....and from Mexico City!
Yes and funny train horns at camera man lol
I met a Iran girl in social media 8 yrs ago .. she is most beautiful, kind and smart girl I have ever met in my life.. still we are good friends 🙂
I have the privilege of travelling by train in Iran between Dorood (Lorestan) and Mashhad.... wonderful.... can’t forget, It was during winter... 1992, the early breakfast and the newspaper unbelievable.....The best country in the Middle East with most civilised people.
Long live Iran.
May Iran flourish. Love from India
Iran is culturally most profound and beautiful! I find Iranians most hospitable and similar to us. ❤ from India🇮🇳
Lmao India is nothing like Iran really. I've been in both countries.
@@sayuas4293 yep. India and Iran are diametrically opposed cultures. Besides, most iranians don't consider Indians to be Aryans cause of their dark skin.
During revolution I believe many Iranian fled to India, I guess.
Indians aren’t nearly as hospitable as the Iranians. They Don't offer just water when someone comes to house.

I really didn't know Iran as this more beautiful until I saw this documentary. Iran abounds in natural and scenic beauties. People have more freedom compared to Saudi Arab and absolute freedom like western countries can cause damage to the existing cultural beauty of Iran. I wish to travel to Iran to see its exquisite nature and society. Lots of love to Iran from India.
I really liked the definition of freedom towards the end by the Iranian man. Western absolute freedom is hideous and gross.
@@mitsengupta8945 Congrats! You win the prize for the most idiotic comment.
Iran is a beautiful country.
The women are beautiful the men look italian, the children are angels. The oil created all the problems by pitting nations against nations. When I was in college a retired US army man that was stationed in Iran showed us in the geography wonderful movies he had taken while in Iran. He had wonderful things to say about Iran and the people. Few years later all hell broke loose.
41.30 "We have freedom in our country, but it is a bit limited.."
It is a sad situation... so many motivated people with so little opportunities..
Love from the Netherlands, hope to visit you again soon.
Real freedom requires shock and awe by the US military. Surely your town is reduced to rubble and you don't have running water and electricity but you can enjoy real freedom for sure. Coming soon to an Iranian city near you.
Peaceful people 💕

masoomeh tanghatari there are more good people in the world, than bad. But it seams that the bad ones are the ones in power. From Australia I wish all people in Iran peace and prosperity.
I have been to Iran two times and for the first time, I was really impressed as the picture of Iran I had in mind was changed ironically. It is peaceful, beautiful and clean. People are hard working and have strong faith too. What I really loved there was Persian architecture that is really astonishing. Tehran is a developed city, Isfahan is the city of Persian Architecture, Shiraz is beautiful, and Mashhad is full of faith. In short, I recommend it.

Iran is a great country and a great civilization. I enjoyed every minute of this documentary. It reminded me of my last train journey in 2002 from Karachi to Rawalpindi.
A train journey is most often the best way to see a country, meet its people and see their culture. It gives one time and space and the opportunity to relax. Beautiful country Iran...I have been to Kish and Qeshm islands.... Would be a pleasure to visit again across the country.
Iran, you are one of the best disciplined and beautiful country in that part of the world. Your highways, roads and architecture are wonderful. They are very clean and well taken care of. Your people are very friendly and hospitable. Hats off!

34:40 False translation. Correct translation is " The engineer told Shah that he can prove that this bridge is built stable by standing with his wife and child under it while the train passes" the reason why I am correcting that translation is because the way this show translated puts a bad image of Shah. Very Beautiful Country! Love from Afghanistan!
I heard that this is a gossip and not true!
A good engineer certainly would have tested the strength properly and to stand below the bridge must have been to enfuse confidence..

Thanks for the truthful heads up. Many loved the Shaw. You can trace nearly ALL of our current terrorist problems from the time of two certain short cited political events; dirt was the mindless border drawing of the Middle East by mainly Britain - and its failure to recognize people groups already in areas(great example the Kurds who are in FOUR diff countries) and second Jimmy Carter and his many policies that focused on only the idea of peace and humanitarian ideas not taking into account the long outcomes or hatred men sometimes have in their hearts for others. For instance he refused to back the Shaw or ANYONE- thus a dictatorship under extreme Shria law was embraced in Iran AND the 8 years was between Iran and Iraq was ended freeing up Saddam to look for new conquests. Pres. Carter was warned, but he ignored a 1000 plus years of history.
So I appreciate your just pointing out clear translations-- if we can’t hear the truth from a simple interview what else are lies or errors?
Yes your correction is highly appreciated. Coz when first I heard I couldn't understand. Thanks for your correction bro.

It's amazing how differently we perceive things in the west. The guy in 13:42 is going to a remote pool with friends and he starts philosophising about water. If I go the pool with my friends and I stare at the water and say stuff like "Water is life..." they'd think I was high.
Do you people not understand the significace of Water or appreciate it as a nature's gift! I think your people haven't face water crisis like there in Iran
