Beautiful grain in that platter Gary! Definitely a "trash to treasure" project because the board you started out with looked ready for the woodstove. Also glad that the news from your doctor was encouraging. Getting old sucks but sounds like he's given you a recovery plan that is doable. Blessings, Stuart
Thanks Stuart. I was a great surprise to see all that cool grain. The wait to turn it was well worth it. Made it that much more special. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you very much Mike. I was sure happy what he said about go ahead and turn. Just no lifting up high or heavy. Works for me. Thanks for watching, Gary

I love the grain and the way it changes shape and color when you turn it around. A great design to make the best use of the piece that you had to work with. Thanks for showing it off, and sharing everything with us! See you next week.
Good morning, Gary. You were right about the grain in this chunk of wood. Gorgeous! I can taste the cookies. It is good to hear your report from the doctor. All the best to you, Gary, as you continue to move forward.

Gorgeous platter Gary. I love the quilted grain in the wood. Looks like maple to me. My father in law always told me to never get old. The alternative is not so great either.
Great news from the doctor. Those “old folks diseases” are expected and a lots better than surgery. That was an amazing “cookie” tray. Grain going every place. I know you’ll put it to great use.
Gary, glad to hear you can still turn wood. I think my younger years played a big part in why I have the aches and pains today. Back then I worked harder not smarter and boy oh boy am I paying for it these days.🤣 ........Beautiful looking cookie dish. Be well
Thanks so much Linda. Back then I played hard and paid the price. Plus working hard. We had some heavy chunks of wood we used to build patterns. Thanks for watching Gary
That was a very cool result from that garage sale find. Looks great! Prayers for successful outcome from your physical therapy. My wife went through a similar thing a couple years ago, the therapy was quite helpful.
Thank you very much Mark. I as sure hoping he would send me to PT rather than needing surgery. Right now he thinks that is what I need. Great finding a good doctor who thinks that way. Thanks for the prayers, Gary
Hi Gary... Really beautiful platter... the wood is just amazing... I think that you got the best from the piece... I hope that the therapy helps to keep you mobile and pain free... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thank you very much Andy. Sure looking forward to getting going with the PT. Knowing it can help is good but it still tender in the morning. Cheers, Gary
We've been away on a short holiday, but catching up again, that's a grand piece love the markings, brilliant, Irene sed she could see a croc, once again good luck with the shoulder, wear and tear from hard work catches up with us. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thanks so much Gary. Hope you had a great time. Just think about all the cars we wear out over the years. I guess we should expect some wear and tear on us LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
hey Gary ,isn't vintage so much fun,I am a 1947 model also, enjoy your programs,of coruse I turn and love it,some of your creations are great, thank you keep doing as use it or lose it.
Thank you Fran. For sure 1947 was a good year. My first car was a 1947 Dodge coupe. But it was not so good. I paid $25 for it in 1963. It did run though LOL Thanks for watching, Gary
Hi 👋 Papa,1947, sorry to hear that you having problems with your joints, and bits and peace’s , as we all know we all have been abusing our bodies over the years in one form and another, good luck with your Therapy. A great looking 👀 platter, I hope you use at least a Number 7-8 strength Coffee, as it needed to be strong 💪 😂, Beautiful looking 👀 figuring in the Maple 🍁, I hope that someone is going to give you some lovely COOLIES to make sure the platter is the right size. Many years ago I used to work for a Organ building company called Walkers , I have machined up 100 of £100000, of Maple, The grain and texture in it can be amazing even in in a small area, I have made 1000s of sets of pedal sticks, and have to lay them out to make up sets, stay Safe, keep up the great work, Phil from the moulin France.
Thank you very much Phil. We had no idea as kids that things would not work the same when we got older. But it would not have made a difference LOL It is pretty strong coffee. Three cups and I am seeing things! Sounds like you had a fun job for sure. Take care, Gary
Thank you Jeff! Yes the grain is amazing . I had a PT appointment this morning and he is cutting back on some of the exercises. I have much better movement now Thanks for asking, Gary
I've been using coffee and CA glue to fill in voids on some of my pieces and it has been working great. I open the pods after making coffee and let it dry. It's a really fine grind so it looks good.
Thank you very much Glen. A very cool looking piece of wood for sure. My quess is it will be uncomfortable for awhile but if that is what it takes I will sure give it a try. Take care, Gary
thank you for sharing another wonderful peice. I suffuer from arthritis in my hips and hands but I still turn you get to know what you can and can't do best of luck and stay safe
What a beautiful platter and a very nice find at a garage sale! I hope therapy helps your shoulder as we would hate to see you have to stop turning! As I always say it "it sucks to get old" anyway, well done and thanks! Cheers Al
I *love* the little dragon/'gator head inclusion. It's sooooo cool. Love coincidences like that. As someone with joint issues myself (albeit being a younger fella) stay safe but keep living life!~ I look greatly forward to your next project, as always.
I was getting ready to type a comment about the alligator head when you mentioned it! The platter is beautiful. I wish only the best for you in your PT. Keep turning!
Thank you very much Ted. I would have continued with something. I know a lot of people like to see how segment software works. But that can wait now as I am cutting up some pieces right now for a turning. Take care, Gary
Glad to hear you can continue to produce your amazing turning projects in moderation. There are lots of non drug products that you can use to relieve some of the discomfort you may experience in your day to day world, just experiencing the reward for reaching those "golden years" . Blessings Gary to you and yours, and keep on turning..👍
Gary, what a beautiful piece of workmanship from a talented master of woodturning. What a joy to watch a piece of wood that might have been trashed turned into a useful piece of art. You are right, the dark area looks like and alligator sneaking in to grab a cookie. Best wished for the physical therapy on your shoulder. I hope and pray that you will be able to continue to use your arm and shoulder to do the work you enjoy for many years to come. May the Lord continue to bless you and your family. All the best to you my friend.
Thank you very much Rudy. For sure this was a very special turning. I saw something in that board when I got it at a garage sale. Because of the shape I just let it sit for a number of years to make sure the right I ideal came to me on how to use it. Wow was I surprised with the grain inside. Thank you for your kind words. He has blessed us in many ways. Take care, Gary
I use Folgers half-caf. Just a beautiful piece for sure. Do what you can when you can. No papa is worst then some papa. Thank you for sharing. I hope I see you on the next one
I just started watching wood turning videos again and I appreciate yours. You take the time to explain what your doing and how problems can happen and how to prevent them and so much more. New subscriber here. Thank you. God bless you and yours
Thank you Stuart. Just seems like having kidney stones taken out at the begining of the year should have been enough LOL Hope your shoulder issues improve. Gary
So glad the doctor's news are good. Please do take care and listen to your body. As for the platter- so stunning! With you moving it, it looks 3D! All that rippling and curves. Man it's stunning! Thanks for sharing. Take care. Much ❤ps. We don't care if it's an easy or hard turn. All we care about is that you're ok and we can enjoy time with you being creative.
It’s a lovely platter, Gary. It’s encouraging that you can still turn with your shoulder in its current condition; long may you be able to continue. I went to the doctor with a similar issue; I lifted my arm up and said: “It hurts when I do this.” And he responded: “Don’t do it then!” 😂. Keep up the good work 🌞
Thank you Ray. After he lifted my arm up he also told me not to do it LOL. I thiink they watch your face because not many of us guys will say ouch! LOL Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful platter! It has a 3d effect when you move it around!! Very cool! Glad to know pt will help the shoulder instead of surgery. I tore my rotator cuff last year and did pt instead of surgery. Worked out well for me. Glad your ok!
Beautiful platter, Gary! The grain is stunning. So very thankful you will be able to keep turning. You add a great deal to the woodturning community on YT. I know I am very grateful for you and your willingness to share with all the rest of us. Praying physical therapy brings you substantial relief. Thanks!
Thank you very much Greg. I was sure concerted he would say let it rest for 3 months but he said no it will be fine to turn. I appreciate your prayers and thanks for watching, Gary
Glad to hear you just need some PT Gary! I had reverse total shoulder replacement surgery on my right shoulder back in March and just got done with my PT. It's still going to be another 3-6 months to totally recover. The good news, I have about 90% arm movement and can still play my guitar and just started turning some pens. That platter is absolutely beautiful, great job!
Thank you very much John. Glad to hear you can still play your guitar. That was a concern of mine as well. I have one sitting behind me and just pick it up now and then to play something. As it is I was worried about not being able to play for awhile. Wife and I are in the choir and I play guitar a few times a week for that. Take care, Gary
Very pretty piece Gary, I’m surprised that you waited for 5 years to turn this timber. I’m really happy that you are continuing to turn and hope that you continue making videos, very informative and great tutorials. I was sorry to hear that you were experiencing discomfort but pleased now that you know what’s causing it and you are addressing the problem, get well soon from down under in Oz. I tell the rest of my club members to watch both your channel and Phils
Thank you very much Greg. Well the piece of wood looked kind of plain but it was well aged when I got it and had darkened. But there was something about it at the time that made me think it was special. Thanks again, Gary
Thank you Luie! I sure hope so. It will be two weeks before my first appointment. I would have had to wait 6 weeks if I was not willing to do early morning appointments. But I get up early so it was a good deal for me. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you very much Garth! I will be heading out to make some more shavings in a bit. They will be small shavings but lots of fun. Thanks for watching, Gary
That’s a very nice platter and the wood is something else. Glad to hear you don’t need surgery for the time being, also maybe see a massage therapist for that, sometimes mine flares up horribly painful but my masseuse can make it completely disappear until I manage to hurt it again but I do highly recommend it. Take care
Thank you very much. For sure I will try all the non invasive methods first. But I did want the orthopedic surgeon to give me his opinon. Happy liked the platter, Gary
Those are incredible grain patterns in the platter. Nice piece as usual. Glad your shoulder issues don't require invasive techniques and hope PT does the trick. It's not fun but is pretty effective--at least it has been for me. Best wishes.
Thank you Tom. It sure is a pretty piece of wood for sure. Never had any PT before(except in the Army and that was Physical Training) Soonest I could get in is the 16th of this month. But they made 4 appointments to start.
@@ThePapa1947 Good luck with the PT. I go three times a week for my knees, lower back and hip. The sessions are between 1.5-2 hours and really wear me out! Need a nap when I'm done! LOL
I’m glad to hear you’re going for therapy. Do what they say and hopefully you can avoid surgery. The cookie tray looks absolutely beautiful, I thought the bark inclusion looked like a dragon’s head. Top or bottom absolutely stunning. Great work.
There is nothing more rewarding than releasing the beauty in a piece of wood.
Thank you Sharon and you are so right.

Great news from the doctor. Those “old folks diseases” are expected and a lots better than surgery. That was an amazing “cookie” tray. Grain going every place. I know you’ll put it to great use.
Thank you very much my friend. I am sure it will get a lot of good use.
Take care,
Gary
Gary, glad to hear you can still turn wood. I think my younger years played a big part in why I have the aches and pains today. Back then I worked harder not smarter and boy oh boy am I paying for it these days.🤣 ........Beautiful looking cookie dish. Be well
Thanks so much Linda.
Back then I played hard and paid the price. Plus working hard. We had some heavy chunks of wood we used to build patterns.
Thanks for watching
Gary
That was a very cool result from that garage sale find. Looks great! Prayers for successful outcome from your physical therapy. My wife went through a similar thing a couple years ago, the therapy was quite helpful.
Thank you very much Mark. I as sure hoping he would send me to PT rather than needing surgery. Right now he thinks that is what I need.
Great finding a good doctor who thinks that way.
Thanks for the prayers,
Gary
Cheers,
Gary
Very nice Gary, so enjoy your work. Stay healthy.
Thank you very much Ronald!
Thanks for the news and for sharing your work.
Thank you very much Herbie I appreciate you watching.
Gary
We've been away on a short holiday, but catching up again, that's a grand piece love the markings, brilliant, Irene sed she could see a croc, once again good luck with the shoulder, wear and tear from hard work catches up with us. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thanks so much Gary. Hope you had a great time.
Just think about all the cars we wear out over the years. I guess we should expect some wear and tear on us LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful work and amazing grain, Well done
Hi Arron! Thank you very much.
Take care,
Gary
hey Gary ,isn't vintage so much fun,I am a 1947 model also, enjoy your programs,of coruse I turn and love it,some of your creations are great, thank you keep doing as use it or lose it.
Thank you Fran. For sure 1947 was a good year. My first car was a 1947 Dodge coupe. But it was not so good. I paid $25 for it in 1963.
It did run though LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
But it would not have made a difference LOL
It is pretty strong coffee. Three cups and I am seeing things!
Sounds like you had a fun job for sure.
Take care,
Gary
Boy the fiddleback rays are really standing out! And I hope the theory helps the shoulder. 👍
Thank you Jeff! Yes the grain is amazing .
I had a PT appointment this morning and he is cutting back on some of the exercises.
I have much better movement now
Thanks for asking,
Gary
I like your videos for all the information you include in each step of your turning, I.e. lathe speed, sandpaper grit, etc. Ernie, fellow turner
Thank you Ernie I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,
Gary
I've been using coffee and CA glue to fill in voids on some of my pieces and it has been working great. I open the pods after making coffee and let it dry. It's a really fine grind so it looks good.
Thank you James. I have done that as well. Just did not want to wait for it to dry
Thanks for the reminder.
Gary
Beautiful platter, nice finish. I would call it Quilted Maple, but fiddleback also works. Thanks for sharing. Good luck on the PT.
Thank you very much Glen. A very cool looking piece of wood for sure. My quess is it will be uncomfortable for awhile but if that is what it takes I will sure give it a try.
Take care,
Gary
The platter is stunning! I do hope you feel better and the PT goes well.
Thank you very much Michael!
Thanks for sharing. Take care of yourself.
Thank you very much Stan.
Will do!
Gary
Wow, what a great piece!! Good luck with the arm and keep turning.
Thanks so much Dianne! I will do some lighter pieces for agile.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Thanks for watching,
Gary

Thanks so much Manjit!
Amazingly beautiful
Thanks so much Grambear!
What a beautiful platter and a very nice find at a garage sale! I hope therapy helps your shoulder as we would hate to see you have to stop turning! As I always say it "it sucks to get old" anyway, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you very much Al. Happy you like the platter and now that I know turning wont hurt it I feel much better.
Take care,
Gary
I *love* the little dragon/'gator head inclusion. It's sooooo cool. Love coincidences like that.
As someone with joint issues myself (albeit being a younger fella) stay safe but keep living life!~ I look greatly forward to your next project, as always.
Thank you very much. I look forward to each and every turning I do. Thank you for watching.
Take care,
Gary
I was getting ready to type a comment about the alligator head when you mentioned it! The platter is beautiful.
I wish only the best for you in your PT. Keep turning!
Thank you very much Crystal. Yeah that creature was staring at me and I could feel it LOL.
Thank you and I start PT in two weeks.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful work! Good news that you can continue putting out your videos! We’d hate to lose you!
Thank you very much Ted. I would have continued with something. I know a lot of people like to see how segment software works.
But that can wait now as I am cutting up some pieces right now for a turning.
Take care,
Gary
Glad to hear you can continue to produce your amazing turning projects in moderation. There are lots of non drug products that you can use to relieve some of the discomfort you may experience in your day to day world, just experiencing the reward for reaching those "golden years" . Blessings Gary to you and yours, and keep on turning..👍
Thank you very much Greg for the encouragement. I plan to keep on turning for sure.
Thanks again,
Gary
Take care,
Gary
I use Folgers half-caf. Just a beautiful piece for sure. Do what you can when you can. No papa is worst then some papa. Thank you for sharing. I hope I see you on the next one
Thank you Ronald appreciate your comments and thanks for watching.
Gary
I just started watching wood turning videos again and I appreciate yours. You take the time to explain what your doing and how problems can happen and how to prevent them and so much more. New subscriber here. Thank you. God bless you and yours
Thank you very much Carl. Happy you like my videos enough to subscribe. Much appreciated.
God bless you as well,
Gary
Oh yeah, cookies!! yep, I'm going thru basically the same shoulder issues.
Thank you Stuart. Just seems like having kidney stones taken out at the begining of the year should have been enough LOL
Hope your shoulder issues improve.
Gary
What a great piece you have done! Glad you can continue doing your craft! What AMAZING work you do!
Thank you so much Lynn! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
That's beautiful! 🥰
Thank you Nick!
Nice job as usual. Good news from the Doc.
Thank you George. Yes it was very good new!
Thanks,
Gary
Great news. Great platter
Thank you Phil! Much appreciated.
Take care,
Thank you very much and for sure I will take it easy. I have a real fun "easy" one on the lathe right now.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
It’s a lovely platter, Gary. It’s encouraging that you can still turn with your shoulder in its current condition; long may you be able to continue. I went to the doctor with a similar issue; I lifted my arm up and said: “It hurts when I do this.” And he responded: “Don’t do it then!” 😂. Keep up the good work 🌞
Thank you Ray. After he lifted my arm up he also told me not to do it LOL. I thiink they watch your face because not many of us guys will say ouch! LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful platter! It has a 3d effect when you move it around!! Very cool! Glad to know pt will help the shoulder instead of surgery. I tore my rotator cuff last year and did pt instead of surgery. Worked out well for me. Glad your ok!
Thanks so much Madonna! It is sure cool grain. Yes the surgeon was very encouraging on the PT helping out.
Thanks again,
Gary
Beautiful platter, Gary! The grain is stunning. So very thankful you will be able to keep turning. You add a great deal to the woodturning community on YT. I know I am very grateful for you and your willingness to share with all the rest of us. Praying physical therapy brings you substantial relief. Thanks!
Thank you very much Greg. I was sure concerted he would say let it rest for 3 months but he said no it will be fine to turn.
I appreciate your prayers and thanks for watching,
Gary
I hope the PT helps and again another beautiful turning.
Thank you Gary! Looking forward to my first PT session coming soon.
Take care,
Gary
Take care,
Gary
I think it’s awesome grain,you did a great job ❤️👍
Thank you very much William and thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow, this piece is insane. I'm glad you don't need anything invasive to hep the shoulder, hopefully PT gets you right.
Thank you very much Jeff. Yes that grain is just pure crazy!
First PT visit is in 2 weeks. Thanks for your best wishes.
Gary
Thanks again,
Gary
Beautiful work Gary! I really appreciate the inspiration you give me to try new techniques, Keep ‘em coming.
Thank you Mark. Happy you enjoy my videos.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful platter, Gary. Love the figure in the grain. 😊😊😊
Thank you Rob. I was sure surprised to find that grain. The piece was well weathered when i got it.
Gary
That is such a beautiful piece of wood! therapy should help you did an awesome job as always!
Thank you Luie! I sure hope so. It will be two weeks before my first appointment. I would have had to wait 6 weeks if I was not willing to do early morning appointments. But I get up early so it was a good deal for me.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
What a beautiful grain. Also a great use for that piece of wood. Hope you can keep making shavings.
Thank you very much Garth! I will be heading out to make some more shavings in a bit. They will be small shavings but lots of fun.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That’s a very nice platter and the wood is something else. Glad to hear you don’t need surgery for the time being, also maybe see a massage therapist for that, sometimes mine flares up horribly painful but my masseuse can make it completely disappear until I manage to hurt it again but I do highly recommend it. Take care
Thank you very much. For sure I will try all the non invasive methods first. But I did want the orthopedic surgeon to give me his opinon.
Happy liked the platter,
Gary
Those are incredible grain patterns in the platter. Nice piece as usual. Glad your shoulder issues don't require invasive techniques and hope PT does the trick. It's not fun but is pretty effective--at least it has been for me. Best wishes.
Thank you Tom. It sure is a pretty piece of wood for sure. Never had any PT before(except in the Army and that was Physical Training)
Soonest I could get in is the 16th of this month. But they made 4 appointments to start.
@@ThePapa1947 Good luck with the PT. I go three times a week for my knees, lower back and hip. The sessions are between 1.5-2 hours and really wear me out! Need a nap when I'm done! LOL
That is beautiful. Mine was a turn rotator cuff and I had to have it operated on and physical therapy. Yea I have some arthritis in it.
Thank you Billy. It seems arthritis just kind of comes with age. So I am not sure why I have it LOL
I’m glad to hear you’re going for therapy. Do what they say and hopefully you can avoid surgery. The cookie tray looks absolutely beautiful, I thought the bark inclusion looked like a dragon’s head. Top or bottom absolutely stunning. Great work.
Thank you Dave. I will do my best to listen and do what they say.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Beautiful platter! Definitely maple. Thanks so much for all you do! Do the therapy, it will help. We'll be praying for you.
Thanks so much Garry. First session is in 10 days,
Gary
