Wood Turning A Special Piece Of Oak

- Today I turn a piece of Oak I got more than 7 years ago.
It was a day that created good memories after meeting someone who loved wood working.
Pretty simple I should be able to get back to more complex ones soon.

Oak is a lovely wood to work with. I love the smell of it while I m turning. I really like making memory bowls. We had a tornado blow through here in May of 2024. I helped out my neighbourhood by cutting and clearing trees off of roofs, cars, and front lawns. I took a piece of wood from each place and told them I would turn a memory bowl for them. I have 4 left to make from the 20 or so I started with.
Thank you Chris. I have made so much Oak furniture that I very seldom turn any of it. But it is nice to do now and then for sure. This one was very special to do.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful Grains and Beautiful work gorgeous Wood
@@gaetancrepeault9333 thank you!
Gary, glad you’re back to turning! You sound excited, which I’m sure you are. I like the shape of the bowl and the way the grain looks. The trick using the nub is a great idea.
Keep turning.
Thank you Skip. This was sure fun to do. I thought. Next weeks will be a bit harder...I think LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Good to see you back at it, buddy! This is an excellent turning for anyone to do. A very useful bowl from an ordinary piece of lumber. Well, not ordinary, it's Red Oak and I love working with it! You did a great job of explaining the why and how of this piece and ended up with a doozy! Great finish, too! Looks like a popcorn bowl to me! See ya next week! 😊
Phil
Thank you Phil! This worked out as planned. I turned the outside then when in and had a few cups of coffee then later that afternoon turned the inside.
Popcorn for sure!
Feeling much better and the foot stretching's seems to be helping a lot. I even got a start on next weeks project.
Mostly because it needs to sit for a day or so before turning......hint hint
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
I like the shape of this bowl. The wood appears pink on my computer. I like it. Enjoy the cool weather while you have it.
Thank you Travis! Looks like the cool weather is here for awhile. It is 33 degrees right now.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful piece Gary. The grain is gorgeous.
Glad to see you back.
Thank you Carl! It is good to be back.
Gary
Beautiful piece of oak turned by a master! Looks great, Gary! 😎😎
Take care,
…..Gord
Thank you my friend.
Take care buddy,
Gary
Nice look and shape, Gary. Glad to see you can turn without over-doing it. Solid pieces have their own appeal. Take care and continue to progress with your rehab.
Thank you my friend. I am working my way back to doing more complex turnings but these are lots of fun as well.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful bowl with lovely grain!
Thank you Carol. I think anytime you can put a shape on Oak it really brings out the grain.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary, What is not to love about a nice piece of Oak.
That piece sounded very dry and quite thin as well.
I'll be back on my lathe next week.
Take care my friend.
Hwyl, Huw
Thank you Huw! It was pretty thin for dry oak for sure.
Back on the lathe??? Good to hear buddy and I will be watching,
Hwyl,
Gary
Thank you for showing us that oak bowl. Glad you’re slowly getting back into turning. Looking forward to your next project.
Thank you very much Charles. I am working my way back to doing what I love to do.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
You are back Gary! Nice piece and intersting to hear the story behind it.
If I wouldn't be able to source my own free wood, this hobby would become very expensive or even unaffordable!
Thank you Leo. Well I wish I could get 100% free kiln dried but that is not so easy to do. Now if still resembles a tree that is where my free stuff comes from.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
It's great to see you back to turning - and taking the time for PT and healing. Beautiful 😊
Thanks so much Maria . The PT is not bad because I can do it all sitting. I definitely can move my foot better but a ways to go.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Glad to see you back at it. Very nice bowl. I tend to turn several of these types of bowls. BTW, I recently upgraded my dust collection system to 4” schedule 20 PVC pipe and removed all the flex pipe except at the machines and the blast gates and other fittings connected right up. Boy, what a difference! I run a 650 cfm Jet collector wired for 220VAC. It pulls like an 800 cfm unit.
Thank you very much Robert. I probably should replace some of the flex stuff I have. But most are short sections to get from the dust collector to the solid PVC.
Not sure what mine pulls. I have the Laguna C-Flux

Gary
Talk about timing, (and I swear this is true!) Just yesterday, I decided to try a shallow oak bowl from the end of an 8' x 10 1/2" x 2" plank I've had stashed for years in the wood pile, just begging to be made into something. So I cut off a square piece & began turning last night. This was a first (for me) from oak & your video was most helpful in choosing a sequence & technique. Lots of useful hints & tips here. Again, timing couldn't have been better! Thanks, Gary. Really nice piece.
What a great story and glad it worked out this way. Pretty close to the same size for sure.
Thanks for watching and your great story,
Gary
Nicely done Gary, I also rarely get to turn perfectly round blanks as I process all my own wood for turning, again great looking bowl, kind regards from will.👍
Thank you Will. Sometimes starting with a round chunk is a real treat😋
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Excellent turning with kiln dried stock Gary! Hope your foot is doing much better! You Rock Papa!
Thank you very much Douglas! Foot is feeling much better thank you.
Take care,
Gary
Nice bowl Gary. I'm glad to see your recovery is on track. I neglected to wish you a Happy Birthday last time, so Happy Birthday. I'll match you in May.
Thank you very much Dave. Feels like it is doing good. Just have to stay on the exercise program they gave me.
But all can be done while I sit and watch UA-cam videos.
Hmm....May...yeah our anniversary is in May. Happy pre birthday in case I forget Or maybe best to remind me LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Really enjoyed your work and the result. Helpful in watching you use various techniques and approaches to shaping especially how you finished out the bottom of the piece. Thank you.
Thank you very much Warren. Happy you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching,
Gary
Glad to see you back in the saddle turning again, Gary.
Thank you very much James. It does take me a bit to get moving in the morning but I am getting there.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful works Gary, you always make it look so easy.Thank you for sharing the video.Stay cool and rest between your turning 😉🤗
Thanks so much Peter! Been able to turn each side of these pretty quick and then sit down and do something else for a bit and then come back in the afternoon and finish it. Trying to limit standing to no more than 20 minutes at a time.
This is what my physical therapist recommended. Seems to be working.
Thanks again,
Gary
Great job on a lovely piece of wood. I like oak a lot. It’s not walnut, but it’s pretty nice. Your bottom treatment is really nice too. Great piece.
Thank you Doug. I used to love Oak...I still like it. I have built many cabinets out of Oak and other furniture. Our whole house was Oak everywhere back in the day. Still have the round Oak pedestal table and the Oak roll top desk I made close to 50 years ago. Swapped out the Oak bathroom cabinets I made years ago as well.
Did not replace with Walnut though LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
It is nice to keep in mind where we got our pieces from. I date my rough turned pieces and add a quick note where they came from. I recently returned a piece of black walnut that I went for on a snowy Sunday afternoon in January 2009 to a good friends house. Nice to pass on when giving my work away. Nicely finished bowl that will be enjoyed by someone. You should try making a few trinket boxes, they are easy to do and give a lot of pleasure to recipient's.
Thank you Ronald. I try my best to make something in return for the wood I get. Especially when I tree has been cut down. Our friends have gotten 3 from there tree and I still have some of the wood left.
I do think that small items are as nice as the bigger turnings and have done a lot of them.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
The Papa is definitely back on the lathe, that's a lovey piece of Oak, sounded very dry, some smashing grain come of it. You take care steady as it goes yeh. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thanks so much Gary. I guess I should bring it in the house now. Kind of hungry for some popcorn LOL.
I am doing my best to just to sections of the turnings. What ever I get done in 20 minutes at a time is working out good.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
A beautiful bowl Gary . Nicely done . We are so glad to see you up and out in the shop . Take care and don't push it . We hope you have a great week end .
Thank you Jon. Keeping the standing down to 20 minutes a few times a day. Works out on this type of turning where I can get it mounted and one side turned in that amount of time. Then I move over to my bench and work on something sitting.
Getting easier everyday.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 So great to heat you are mending .
What a nice rich looking bowl! It’s also a very elegant shape. I like it very much. I have a couple of chunky pieces of Oak that a cabinet maker once gave me. Once again you’ve given me an idea 👌. Do you ever need to sharpen the recess tool? If so how do you do it? Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. I have not had this one long enough to need to sharpen it but I believe you would put top side down on a diamond stone and hone it. Kind of like people do with the carbide inserts.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, I'm glad to see you are back. Follow the suggestions to take reasonable activities. I always enjoy your videos.
Thank you very much Paul. I am doing pretty good following what I am allowed to do. But if I forget and get a gentle reminder here at home not to overdue it 😉
Gary
Nice bowl, Gary. It's great to see you back at it again. Popcorn definitely or OD on M&M's.
Bill
Thank you Bill. That is my normal popcorn size but M&M's would be an overdose of sugar for me LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great to see u healing and turning, I know all to well how difficult that can be. Always learn something watching your videos. Gonna repost to our Group. Thank you for sharing with us😊
Thank you very much Scott I appreciate you comments and thanks for watching,
Gary
I wonder what an end grain vase would look like made from four pieces of this nice and thick beautiful oak. Just a thought.
This is a sweet and simple bowl, a great way to get some time on the lathe.
This is Gil Grace, YT changed my user name again. :-(
Thank you Gil! I think end grain Oak would be very nice. For sure it was a good one for me to turn this week.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary. Lovely end result. Watching & learning I think, imo a recess gives the best look in almost all cases. Glad your getting fitter just take it easy & slowly mate. Keep well & stay safe
Thank you Jim. I like both a recess and a tenon depending on the piece of wood. If it is from a half log then you will have stock there for making the tenon and if it is a larger piece I like the tenon. Thinner a recess saves height or hot gluing a premade tenon on is a good way to do it. So many choices LOL
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice looking bowl Gary. Glad to see you back turning. Do not over do it. Ease back into it. Take care and thanks for sharing my friend 😊.
Thank you very much Scott. Doing my best to not be on my feet for very long. This one was prefect for that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Well done Gary. Nice looking bowl. I have ordered the woodturner pro package and I love it. Will be a learning curve for sure but looking forward to using it in my work. Thank you for turning me on to it. 😊
Thank you Richard. I am sure you will love the Woodturner Pro package. I know I sure do.
Thank you for watching,
Gary
Nice bowl, Gary. I'm glad you are back at creating your art. I think that there were a few of us who suggested going easy, then slowly working yourself back into shape .
Thank you very much Mark. Yes many have suggested going slow and I am doing just that. I limit my standing to 20 minutes then come back and do more after resting up. I do have something going on where I can sit and should have that ready soon.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, that is a simple but elegant piece of art. I always enjoy your videos and the skills you have to do such great work. May the Lord continue to bless you with good health and happiness my friend.
Thank you very much Rudy I appreciate you watching and commenting,
Gary
Beautiful bowl. I find oak a bit hard to turn, however, I usually turn any oak from the tree after it's been cut from the tree and as a bowl blank. I haven't turned any oak that has been properly dried and ready to work.
Thank you Harry. Well you are right it turns much easier when it has been cut from a tree and not kiln dried.
I do have one big chunk from and Oak tree I have been putting off for about 8 years.
Maybe I better get to it before the worms do LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice chunk of oak, Gary. And you did it proud. Beautiful bowl!
Thanks Billy. I had never really planned on using it this way but glad I did.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary glad to see you back on the lathe. Don’t rush it my wife had surgery on her big toe. She didn’t listen and pushed it now it’s going to take longer to heal. I liked this oak bowl. ;)
Thanks Kevin it is great to be able to get out there. I limit my standing time and take a lot more time to complete a turning.
Big toe pain is not a lot of fun. I managed to get a gout attack on my other foot and could hardly touch my big toe.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great to see you back on the lathe. I enjoy your comments as you turn and your reasoning for making the decisions you do. Till I see you again.
Thank you Rodney I appreciate your comments.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice Gary, that turned out great. The finish really enhanced the piece and the back story on the wood was quite enjoyable. Glad to see you are able to do some turning again.
Thank you very much Mark. I enjoyed turning it for sure. I have something else in the works and hope to find time to day to work on it. A busy day today with things going on.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
You did a beautiful job. Keep makin shavings, like Capn Eddie says
Thank you Garth! That is a great line he has!
Gary
Very nice bowl Gary! Simple turnings like this are really fun to do and pretty much stress free
Thank you David. Yup they sure are all of those things plus nice and quick. I allow myself(doctors orders) 20 minutes of standing and am able to do each side of this in that amount of time.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That turned out awesome. It could be an offering plate at church, great work. I really like oak the look the aroma it’s a ll good.
Thank you David. I have yet to bring it for my wife to see. It will be interesting what she thinks it should be used for.
We go to a large church and they have multiple baskets that match. Lots of uses for this one.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary, first of all, welcome back! So great seeing you back in action again. This bowl came out beautiful. I like the shape and the grain of the Oak. Great video.
Thank you kindly Japie happy you liked it.
Take care my friend,
Gary
HI gary beautiful wood. simple piece but u great satisfaction.
Many thanks Manjit and thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely bowl and oak makes it even better, I like how you showed how you remove an insert in the base and will keep that memory, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you Al. I am sure it has been done before and I plan on doing it most of the time now with a recess. Pretty easy to do.
Take care,
Gary
Excellent, as generally! Thank You!! Keep turning!
Thank you very much. I appreciate your comments.
Gary
A very nice bowl Gary. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and take care of the foot.🙂🙂
Thank you Glen. Doing all my home PT which is a lot. Next appointment coming up in a few days. Seems like it is better.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I like a mortise and I finish my bowls exactly the same way. Love your videos!
Thank you Billy. For sure there is a place for a mortice in my turnings. I also like hot gluing a tenon on a piece that is not very thick to begin with.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I know that the sealers just add shine but if you eant the grain to pop and stand out so we will get surprised you should add some stain that would make the grainexplode and we would see finished product better
That is an option but I do not care for staining wood.
I could have used a dark grain filler and that will make it show as well.
Thanks for all your tips I will think about them.
love what you did. Try turning your mic louder. I can hear your turning, but not your voice.
Thank you Earl. I will have to watch this again. When I edit the video it seems like my voice is too loud.
Thanks for pointing this out.
Gary
I have access to an old oak beam from a barn. Have not moved it out yet but looking forward to seeing what I can do with that some day.
It should be pretty cool looking wood. I am guessing well aged.
Loved the video. Very instructive. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much. I appreciate you watching,
Gary
You should have glued a sacrificial piece on the bottom so you could have made better use of the good wood
That was a thought but the recess did not effect the height of the bowl so I think it ended up the same. A tenon would have wasted a lot of it.
Simply beautiful and beautifully simple! Well done, Gary.
Thank you Crystal ! Happy you liked it.
Gary
Great tips today! Glad your PT is going well and you are recovering.
Thanks so much Lee. I will have my second PT this coming Monday and what he is having me do at home seems to be helping. And I can do them while watching other wood turning videos.
Thanks again,
Gary
Another lovely piece Gary thankyou for sharing
Thanks Ronnie and thanks for watching,
Gary
Sorta looks 3 dimentional!! Love it!! Hard to beat Oak!
Thanks Gerry. I got 3 fresh oak rounds the other day.

I love your video editing, it's a pleasure to watch.
Thank you very much Tom I appreciate your comment. I spend a lot of time on editing.
Thanks for watching,

Great to see you back at the lathe. And that's a very nice bowl.
Thank you very much and it is nice to be able to get out in my shop and do some turning.
Gary
Nice piece Gary! I think the shape you chose just sets the oak right off!!
Thank you Dave. I have made a lot of flat work using Oak but when you put a shape on it I think it really brings the grain out.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Good to see you up and running! Hope you keep up the good work!
Thank you Kathleen. Feel good but a way to go.

Gary
I’m glad to see you are doing better.
Cheers
Thank you Tom...much much better thanks.
Take care,
Gary
Glad to see you are on the mend, welcome back.
Thanks Charlie it feels good to be able to turn.
Gary
Thank you for another great video. I am a newbie turner and I always learn so much from you. I can’t wait to try the trick about scraping as you go. What is that dovetail tool you used to make the recess?
Thank you Lee. For sure as the bowl gets thinner it is harder to clean up. By leaving some stock in the middle it really helps.
That is a Robert Sorby Dovetail Chisel
You can do the same with a skew but this tool is ground to fit the Nova jaws and can flatten it at the same time.
@@ThePapa1947 Thanks, I will have to look for one.
Good to see you back Gary. I don't care for the look of the open grain of oak so I wouldn't ever turn an all oak bowl. But I really enjoyed watching and the shape was cool.
Thank you Rick. It is not my favorite any more. Although a number of years ago I built everything out of Oak.
Still have the Roll Top desk and the round Oak table I made with a pedestal turning and carved Oak feet.
But that was close to 50 years ago. We both got our fill of Oak but I just needed to do this one.
Take care,
Gary

Great figure on that oak. Well done!
Thank you very much Bill!
Hi Gary, glad you are back in your shop and turning and feeling better. I know you have a video somewhere on negative brake scrapers. However, it appears that your scraper might be an inch and a half wide and then ground to your specifications. Could you please send me the angles on both sides of your scraper. I have one that I want to make similar to yours. Thanks and so glad you’re back at it.!
That would be negative rake, scrapers. And the width if not one and a half would be important. Thanks again.
Thank you Van. Yes the negative rake scraper you are asking about is 1.5 inch's wide. It is ground 40 degrees on both sides.
Here is the video you talked about. ua-cam.com/video/wymTRPilYB4/v-deo.html
You will see in the video I sent I have a number of them which I made from chisels. Also have a 1 inch wide one that I bought as a standard scraper and made it negative rake. Both that one and the 1.5 inch scraper I bought at www.pennstateind.com/
Thank you. I love white oak!
Thank you John. I still have a large half of an Oak log I need to turn one of these days.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice piece Gary, and thanks for the little secret on how to blend that bottom in. That little tidbit is going to help me out in the future. Now if this dang illness I caught will let me get back to life in the next day or. I'll be a happy guy. Anywho happy turning my friend ☺️ Glad to see you out doing what you love to do.
Thanks so much Edward.
I hope what you have caught is not real serious. Well it is serious enough to keep you from doing what you want.

That's a beautiful bowl.
Thanks so much Judith...happy you liked it.
Gary
Very nice! Great story also!
Thank you very much. There was a lot more to the story but I did not want to drag it out.
He mentioned some other wood he had in a shed in back. I looked but it was in bad shape.
He had a 16 inch bandsaw and along bed 6 inch jointer in that shed as well.
I asked him if he wanted to sell them but he said they were broken but I could take them for free if I wanted.
He said the people coming in to clean up would have just took them for scrap metal.
I had brought my trailer to get the table saw so I loaded them up. Bandsaw needed a switch but the jointer had part of the table slides broken. I took it apart and put on my Bridgeport mill and pinned and bolted it back together. Works fine now. The bandsaw would only cut 6 inch's thick so I traded up to a different one.

Thank you Brian!
