Japan aren't bad at rugby. Bit of a downswing over the last world cup cycle, but they'll give any team in the world a decent game. After a disappointing world cup they're currently ranked world #12 which is the lowest of the "tier 1" nations. (world cup results have 2x the effect on rankings)
I think my favorite gag in this video is Coney going "you don’t even have to win! The stakes are so low!" and then the entire rest of the video is just systematically proving that statement wrong
This baseball video was honestly really good, so good in fact that Coney was into it the whole time for the hour long video. Honestly this video was great to learn about the history of Japanese baseball and how much they progressed. Unfortunate to the kids that were trained too hard and passed away.
For anyone curious, the play Coney mentions starring in, starting around 20:51, is "I Hate Hamlet" by Paul Rudnick. It's notorious in the theatre world for being overused as a source of audition monologues.
I'm pretty sure this type of culture isnt limited to just baseball, if I'm not mistaken it's also like this in other sports. Additionaly it's not just coachs that do this, I heard (from my mother) that you can get hit for bringing something as insignificant as some stickers (I use stickers as an example because my mother told me she would get hit for bringing them).
Ummmm ackshually the American player who charged the mound and got kicked in the face by the manager was Jim Traber not Kevin Traber. He is on sports talk radio where I live about 4 hours a day so I feel the need to correct it LMAO also fun fact he hit 7 home runs against that team the rest of the season and each time he stopped on 3rd base and shouted Japanese expletives at that specific manager while walking to home.
I feel like you can describe some of this as passion to a fault. There's so much unbridled passion poured into this, actual heart and soul that its jarring when you compare it to others who are just like "Yeah bro idk its a game who cares lol". Some of it definitely goes overboard, like the fucking beating, but I admire the sheer dedication and will of human spirit.
They are real, but what shinpachi does is idol cheering, which they do take seriously and have charts for songs and stuff that they practice, but is a completely different thing from the baseball cheering mentioned.

Just so you know, a no-hitter and a perfect game are two different things. The outfielders definitely have balls hit in their direction during a no-hitter. A perfect game is what you're thinking of. Just straight up 27 strikeouts
Even Japanese think that old Japanese style is stupid and the sports that using old style now is baseball in Japanese school. They have to shaving all hair and practice until vomit but not most players can’t be a good player as MLB players.
