They are doing this in an ATTEMPT to get you to forget that you signed up to AppleTV to watch Messi sweat his way around the swamps they play on in Miami. They did this because of Messi's career. The reason that they CAN do this is because Apple is a hardware company, not a sports company. They are doing this so you watch games on your iPhone. Hands-down, the worst contract I’ve ever seen by far. Ohtani got 700 million, now this is my understanding of it, because he’s an ace pitcher which gets you about 350 in the market, he’s a league Homerun leader, which will get another 3:50 in the market. And that’s how you got him. Soto wasn’t even the best hitter or outfielder on the last team he played for, let alone in the league.
Plus, Ohtani is a global athlete, so he brings in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue EVERY year for the team who has him. The contract pays for itself without even taking his on-field play into consideration.
It doesn’t matter about money cohen has so much he could give 1 billion dollars to some minor leaguer and still be richer than everyone im just happy we got him and don’t have those cheap wilpons anymore

Comparing this to the Ohtani contract just isn't an apples to apples comparison, at all. Ohtani - most if it is deferred so the team can spend on others players - Sotos is not, that hurts the Mets. Ohtani is a multi tool player - Soto is not, he's a two tool player. Ohtani's presence on the Dodgers has increased revenue for the Dodgers in merch and in Japanese TV and licensing, Sotos does not. Sure it'll help the Mets some but not in the same way. I just hope the owners wake up to the insanity of this contract and band together to not do it again - that's the only way this cancer doesn't spread. No one player is worth $50m AAV (with none deferred). That's not likely to happen I know but it's a collective virus spreading through the league and it's up to everyone to stop it.

Ohtani made his own money through name recognition, merchandising etc plus his was deferred. Ohtani contract was no brainer actually.
I think it's based on how much the contract agreed to pay. I'm not sure if it's guaranteed but if it is then it'll be based on the biggest "guaranteed" money. In sports like the NFL, you can have huge contracts but not all of that money is guaranteed compared to the NBA & even football like the premier league, the standard practice is guaranteed contracts.

Yankees fan here. I was bummed when I heard the news, but I am actually glad he isn't coming back. Too much to put in one person. If Soto was amazing defensively, I would reconsider, but he's a future DH. Happy for the Mets, but I am mostly positive on the Yankees moves this year to fill in the obvious gaps in defense and getting more of the lineup engaged in the offense.

Soto is deserving of $500+ mil but with the absurd number he got this past off season it makes Ohtani look underpaid in retrospect.
Ohtani looked underpaid when we learned about his deferrals. If he averages 130 IP the next 6-8 years, his deal will be a steal. If he has to stop pitching after a couple years, it won't be so great.

People keep shitting on the Mets for spending this amount of money yet Yankees and blue jays were all in at around 760 as well with red sox well over 700. Steve wants to win, and if it means signing him to well above the average contract then so be it. Mets fans are happy, and so is he.
Problem is he isn't going to win a World Series, a team is, and the Mets have a ton of holes especially in pitching. With Soto's contract alone they could have signed Max Friend, Devin, and Corbin Burnes. That right there would have made them a contender. Signing a guy for 700M who can't play D, is a horrible base running, and basically just walks or hits singles, is not a good contract.
From a Yankees fan, I think that’s the problem. We all got played by Boras cuz as amazing as Soto is I just don’t see how he can be making more than Ohtani.

Mets signing Juan Soto may be an overpay but he's a hitter for life, when he's unable to perform in the outfield he will be used as a DH. Starting pitching needs help but I'm banking on trading for Cease eventually. And then hopefully signing vladdy in the off season next year. Not only is he not worth that contract but imo the Mets lost to LA cuz of lack of pitching so seeing them add Soto and not much in terms of the amazing pitching that was available this year doesn’t make sense to me

Ted did hitting instruction videos which shows how fundamentally sound he was. OTOH, Soto has an ugly swing that relies on his youth and athleticism which is fine until be reaches 30 or suffers a significant injury. There are many batters who were all world to begin but could not maintain. Yelich and Bellinger come to mind. Pujols is another. I think Soto and his contract will not age well.

He's shown time and time again that he just doesn't care about money (which makes the gambling scandal all the more confusing when people are convinced that he's the mastermind). In Japan, he opted to stay in player dorms when he was a bonafide star. He lived off of about $2,000/month doing that while letting his mom manage his finances. His focus was to win a World Series and become the best baseball player ever. The complete opposite of Soto (who also has a World Series). He already makes more than most of us regular folk will ever see in baseball, and so much more in endorsements. Honestly, if you count endorsements, I feel like he'll make a lot more than Soto. But Ohtani doesn't care about that, why should we?

He's already getting way more than Ohtani and Trout and everyone else. I imagine he might actually lose over $100mil by oting out and maybe even have to settle for a 5 year deal and then a 3 year deal and then 1 or two year deals to end his career.
