    I chose the Shred for my go everywhere bike. While not as smooth and sophisticated as those with a mid drive motor, having the hub drive allows for having a throttle. I don’t hear enough people discussing using low pedal assist levels and then augmenting it with the throttle as-needed to flatten the hills. In many ways, the Shred offers the best of both worlds or at least a really good rendition of both!

    Does anyone else notice how Mikey mounts the bike. Like a BOSS with that leg swing! The bike is ok..

    Nice video. Been riding mountain bike for many years but time for some assistance. Bought a Shred two weeks ago after lots of research. Found the hydraulic brakes, larger battery option and torque sensor not found on many bikes in this price range. Not fat tires, but 2.8" look and ride great. Bikes feels solid and motor assist is very quiet. Have only put 8 miles on it on paved road due to snow and ice in New Hampshire but was fun to ride. Looking forward to rail trail riding soon. Just wish it had come with color choices.

      @@clayper13b If you are willing to do a decent amount of pedaling (ie pedal assist level 2 or 3 on most bikes), you weigh less than 200 lbs, the terrain isn't super hilly, and you limit your speed to less than 18 mph, then 800 Wh (ie 48V x 17 Ah) of battery capacity will likely do 50 miles. However, don't pick a fat tire eBike as those are less efficient on roads. The thinner and slicker the tires, the less road resistance, and the more range you can expect. Most affordable, commercially built eBikes don't have that large of a pack though, which is why I build my own packs using premium, high capacity 18650 cells (ie NCR18650GA, Pana NCR18650G) and then convert an existing bike using a Bafang kit.
      Using high capacity, quality cells, you can build 13S5P (48V) or 10S5P (36V) battery packs with that kind of range for around $600 - $700 US. Using the Vruzend kits, you don't even need a spot welder either.
      Keep in mind that all battery packs do degrade over time, so don't expect that kind of range over the long term.

      @@alozborne Thank you . I've been thinking of building my own battery packs (before looking @ bikes) in order to get the range. Blown knees & Prosthetics on both feet means i wont be able to pedal as much or as hard as i did in Alaska riding 50 miles to 2.5 to 3 hours. If it takes me 5 hours that will be OK for here in Texas. Thank you for the heads up on the tires, that is very good to know, for i was looking at RAD. The best to yea. Peace & love always

    I have the Colt which I like and takes me everywhere but not into the woods which I wouldn't recommend. It's a bit heavy although very rugged for it and can take abuse. It's a GREAT price. I'd like to know more about it like motor, the electronics and braking wiring diagrams. Thanks. Cheers

    Not sure what you are saying. So it’s as good as things were five years ago, but cheaper and that’s it? The assist is useful on the flat but useless on the hills? The motor is more/less: refined/noisy/responsive/durable. The display is easy/awkward/slow/visible/flashy? And my take is, well I’ve not ridden one, so I don’t know.

    • @mikeyg5159

      The assist is very useful on hills, especially with the nice mechanical drivetrain. On the motor, I'd say: Noisy: No. Responsive: Yes. Durable: Yes. Refined.... well.... compared to other hub motors with cadence sensors, yes it's refined. Compared to Yamaha/Bosch/Shimano motors... not quite to that level. But just comparing it to them is a serious compliment for Surface604.

    It's a hub drive motor... But what size? I'm looking for my 1st ebike. Need to climb hills, just street and light trail riding. And I'm 220lbs, hopefully not for long. Leaning towards mid drive but there are some REAL 750w nominal hubs that may be able to climb some hills. Also it's good to note the amps of the controller. Not all are equal in a big way. Anyone have experience with a powerful hub drive on moderate hills? Then there is ease of servicing it. I think mid drive wins there but both have trade offs. Thanks. Good video except for the motor power.

    • @mikeyg5159
      @mikeyg5159 4 роки тому +1

      500w nominal, 750w peak. The controller on the Surface604 Rook is a 24a, so I'm guessing the Shred is equal, if not a bit more. More detail can be found on the article:
