Why do petrolheads HATE swirl flaps so much?

  • The Toyota Land Cruiser has a particularly nasty set of flaps, and they must go. How do swirl flaps work? What are they for? What is a swirl flap delete? Why do people like to remove them? Why are they so filthy? Some of these questions will be answered today.
Swirl flaps (or TGVs) are used to improve combustion on engines which are cold and reduce emissions. However, they can fail and cause catastrophic damage to your engine. Let's have a look.

@@vPerformance No don't remove them. The reason you are getting carbon in your intake is because of EGR. Remap your ECU to stop EGR. Clean out your intake - dunk overnight in carb cleaner and inspect/change the flaps every 75k miles...

I'd most definitely not remove them if made from steel and are quality. I often upgrade them to custom made steel cuts or carbon fibre. The performance lost after removing them is dramatic.

So, to sum up, swirl flaps good if properly engineered and manufactured from the right materials, swirl flaps bad on all available/affordable production véhicules.

All bmw diesels 2000-2008 loved eating the flaps with catastrophic damage. And they still are plastic on the newer ones, just not infamous for killing engines anymore. So i think it's more of a swirl flaps good under warranty. Swirl flaps bad if they are old

I'll be taking them off my A6 when I finally get around to it. Partly for the reasons you mention and partly because the black tape I used to cover up the check engine light on the dash is starting to look a bit untidy now and I can turn it off for good when the flaps are gone.

The fuel quality in Germany is much higher compared to England and America. That's why carbon buildup is less of a problem in Germany. Fuel quality in England and America seems to be a sort of rip off to their customers when compared to fuel qualities in Germany. (I am indeed afraid that the international cooperation will make the German fuel quality go down as well. 'Maybe for the markets the best solution'. Yes - but not for my engines.)
That's why we are expected to drive synthetic diesels only in such cars anyway. The usual telling goes, we all know, 'using VPower diesel only will not increase total cost of ownership (too much) anyway.' True again - because depreciation on a new or three year old 120k € car is way, way higher than paying about 6 or 8 % more on VPower fuels. The fuel costs don't make it anyway. 'Only small people seek to have a saving here'. Buy a new car every four years or 50k miles and i will never have any of such problems.
(True again - but the car-brand still continues to keep on accumulating big probs on it's reputation. - We see too many 'I-people' baring responsiblity everywhere anyway? 'I will be out of office and in retirement anyway when the avalanche of complaints with regard to that will come'(?))

What about the performance loss? Or what about emissions on the exhaust pipe? Are they worst? We would like to know about that too.

    • @vPerformance
      @vPerformance  Рік тому

Oh yeah the emissions are worse because of less complete burn. That means more nitric oxide emission. Performance under partial throttle is worse, but better at full throttle because more air can get in the cylinder when on maximum attack

i love engines with swirl flaps its so fun to tell people "i can remove them for *price*" and they say, "nah, its not a problem yet" and then their engine blows up due to stupid plastic. it is far more common that the flaps break in the closed position all the time so you cant go past 2-3000 rpm thinking you are in limp mode but there is actual plastic flaps blocking airflow at higher RPM. Since there are 2 seperate runners, short for torque and long for sustained torque at higher rpm, as he pointed out in the video.

    Repent to Jesus Christ!
    Are you a sinner?

@@vPerformance yes! But you have to think about your personal sins that you have sinned. If you want your sins washed away by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ then you must -
Believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died and was buried and rose again the third day according to the scriptures- 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV.
Have godly sorrow and a contrite broken heart toward God for sinning against him.
      2 Corinthians 7:10
      King James Version
10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
And call upon the name of the Lord and ask him to save you!
      Romans 10:13
      King James Version
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
When he saves you he will seal you with his Holy Ghost and you shall be sealed unto the day of redemption!
      This is true salvation!
Stay away from Catholics and all Christian denominations. They are of the devil.
We are to have a personal relationship with Almighty God Jesus Christ. There is no scripture in the epistles of Paul the apostle to the gentiles to build a building and call it church.
