Easier is not cheating. It's smart. Since you remove the elastic, you can put it in any garment you want to and no one will know. What you want is a well made garment that looks hand made not home made. You are one smart cookie to come up with this.
Thank you for the tutorial. I love this method and can’t wait to try it. I agree with your view that there are many methods in sewing and you just have to pick the one that works best for you. Many prayers to you for you brother.
Good thoughts and prayers for your brother as he heals, have a wonderful visit with him and family. Stretch and Sew, wow, took those classes when I was pregnant with my first son and made all my maternity clothes. Don't know what happen to those patterns and book. Must have gotten lost in one of my moves. Love this method and will give it ago. Just completed a Melissa Watson kimono type jacket using several fabrics and one was a stretchy burnout velvet, wish I had seen this video first, it was a royal pain to insert the sleeve portion. Thank you so much for this brilliant idea!
Just found your channel and love the way you teach these important sewing techniques. You’re a natural at teaching. Sorry to hear about your brother, so happy to hear his recovery is going well. Sending prayers of healing for him and comfort for you and his family.
I’m that little sister too but when my brother was diagnosed with leukemia last year I was there for him. Family does come first. My thoughts and prayers for your brothers complete healing. Love your channel so I’ll be here when you return!!
Fabric is cut and waiting to try the clear elastic set-in sleeve tip! Thanks! Hope your brother's healing and rehab goes smoothly. Keeping you and your family in our prayers.
@@dorothysdaughtersews I'm so glad he's doing great. Family is so important and being together on Thanksgiving will be a wonderful day for you both I'm sure. Blessings, Linda
Ingenious!👏👏👏👏I use the same elastic in my knits for stabilizing the seams never thinking to use in a woven. Ohh my goodness. LOVE this idea❤I'm embarking on a new to me sewing adventure...sewing a shirt for my hubby! Perfect timing on your video. Ty❤ I do hope your brother continues to heal. I'll keep you all in my prayers. The heart is an amazing piece of art healing rather quickly. Peace be with you❤
Thank you for a really useful video - very helpful! 😁 Prayers for your brother and his speedy recovery. As you say, family first! ❤️The channel will be here when you get back 😁😁👍
Genius! I’ll definitely be trying this one! And probably not a “real” technique, but hey, the sewing machine was once considered a cheater method of sewing too! I’m one your newbies, and I’m glad I found you. A speedy recovery for your brother, and some good quality time with your family.
Winner, winner chicken dinner! I much prefer setting sleeves on the flat and I am defiantly going to give this a go, thank you. I am enjoying your channel and I found you through Whitney. Safe travels and hope your brother has a speedy recovery.
Hi Kim, i learned this method using dental floss and/or thin crochet thread. Zigzag over it and gather, set in flat, and after the seam allowance just yank the thread out (leave the zigzag) of the project. Easy Peasy
Family ALWAYS comes first! We have plenty of other things in this community to occupy us! Go be with your brother and we WILL BE HERE when you get back!
Praying for speedy healing for your brother and a fun trip, I noticed your top and realized I made a top (NewLook 6439) out of the same fabric you are wearing.
Hello! And thanks for watching! The long basting stitch helps but it’s moveable and I would always end up with some bunched somewhere. I would end up ripping out and starting over, LOL
You are using a method similar to using tie interfacing, (Peggy Sagers) but i have a question - have you used this method on a pattern that requires more easing? I.e. the SOI coco jacket that has proven to e notoriously difficult to ease in. And if so how did it go? I have learned that It is also much easier to ease a sleeve in to an armhole if one trims the seam allowance to 3/8 inch rather than 5/8 inch. Thank you for this great video and I am curious about trying this on a jacket.
Thank you! I have used a similar method in a coat. I used stretch fleece and it worked wonderfully! The fleece remained in and became almost a shoulder pad
Thank you my darling lady, unfortunately I'm in the UK, the postage price is a bit too much. I shall keep searching, now at least I have a name for it. My hubby is a guitarist and I'd love to make him a shirt in this. Hope all continues well for your brother. Sending love 💙💚❤💜🍀🍀
@@dorothysdaughtersews wow !!! Its fabulous isn't it !!!! Though our home is a little overrun by guitars, amps and all my sewing stuff !! Need to build an extension but would need to win the lotto ( if I did it ) 🤣🌟🌟
How wide is the elastic? Does it have to be clear elastic? Sending Prayers for you and your brother. Thank you so much for this video. Set in sleeves are the bane of my sewing!!
The elastic I use is about 1/4 in wide. The reason clear elastic works best is because you can remove it much easier as the seam ripper just glides along the smoothness of the elastic. Thank you for watching!
Hi I am new to sewing, can you please let me know: Do you have to actually sew on the plastic first to secure it and then again at the end when you get to the last notch Is there not a way the sleeve can be the same size as the arm whole so that you don’t even need to stretch it on wool fabric I wasn’t sure whether you are actually seeing on the elastic
Welcome to the wonderful world of sewing! Yes I am sewing on the elastic as I apply it. This slightly gathers the sleeve cap and makes it easier to insert. Because God made us in 3D with lots of curves and movement, we have to ease and pinch and gather sometimes to get the shape of our bodies. If the sleeve were the same size as the hole, you would not be able to raise your arm. My advice would be to take an old blouse and pick it apart. Sometimes that really helps us to understand why pattern pieces are shaped the way they are. ❤️
Yeah for Ohio, I live here too. I was wondering about something. Every time I make a garment with set in sleeves, it feels like the sleeves are sewed in backwards with limited mobility. I try fitting them, but have never found what the problem is. I can wear RTW. Does anyone have trouble with this? Thanks!
Sorry to respond so late- I’ve been traveling. Thank you so much! Make sure you have the section with two notches in the back. You could do an armscye adjustment to give you more room.
Our dearest and most loving Heavenly Father, I lift up Dorothy's Daughter's brother to you for complete healing. Heal him so completely that he will forget that he was ever sick in any way. I not only know what you can do; I know what you will do. If he needs saving, then draw him to your son, Jesus Christ by the power of your Holy Spirit. I pray to you for healing and for Dorothy's Daughter's entire family's comfort and peace of mind by the precious blood and in the mighty name of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen
Thank you so much, Lynn. I do know how good the God we serve is. My sweet brother is the kind of Christian man everyone aspires to be, and I am so grateful that he is doing well. Thank you for your prayers from your sister in Christ!
I have sewing in sleeves using the flat method for the past few years, as it is quicker. The other method when you have your seams already sewn on the body of the garment and the sleeve it is slower and also harder to remember the puzzle of how it all works. It also appears to me that the garment industry usually uses the flat sleeve insertion method, as most of my RTW woven tops are sewn with the flat method. Why do home sewing pattern makers want to keep us home sewists with time consuming manufacturing methods, when the garments industry is sometimes using quicker methods???
I suppose you could - but the clear elastic is slippery and easy to rip out. The seam ripper just glides on top of it. But I think regular elastic would work otherwise.
What a great idea! I will be trying this shortly.
Yes family first! Prayers for speedy healing!
Thank you!
