    Thank you so much for this video, it is very clear. Since you make your husband's shirts and maybe pants, can you later have a series of videos explaining also how to alter patterns to sew men's clothes. Thank you if you can, I love how you are explaining how to alter women's and children's clothes, but out there there are not many videos with practical tips on sewing for men. Again thank you so much for all the videos you make. Have a great week!

Your technique is so obvious in hindsight but I never thought to do it. I was drawing a shorter shoulder line and blending the curve to meet the underarm where I needed but of course this changes the shape and length of the curve!

    I cannot thank you enough for this! I've spent my whole life thinking I had a screwed up body, not knowing other people have these same issues with clothing. I've made my own clothes for years, and while I managed to make some adjustments, like grading out to a bigger waist and in for narrower hips, and shortening bodices for my short torso, I only recently learned how to properly lower bust darts and about sloping and forward shoulder adjustments. But still I had the gaping neck issue with a many patterns, and this fixed it, and so stinkin' easily! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

      Here is what I would do. I would put the two pattern pieces together and secure them with temporary tape or pattern weights. Overlap the seam allowance. Then proceed with the adjustment as if it were one piece. When you separate the pieces, you will have the curve needed on both pieces. I may try to demonstrate that on a short video.

    So sorry to hear of the loss of your husband. A sudden, unexpected death is very difficult. You seem to be doing well. Lost my husband to cerebral aneurysm 13 years ago. It helps to be aware that grief healing does not follow an upward trajectory- it’s more like a roller coaster- up days and down days. Allow yourself the gift of time.
    A question for you: how do you do the narrow shoulder adjustment if you are already using the smallest pattern size?

  • @christinemartin9449
    @christinemartin9449 5 років тому

    Hi from England. This is great for me and I didn't realise that I should do it, my sleeves are usually too tight so I have just done a narrower seam which doesn't really fix it. I also have to do an actually narrow should adjustment because my shoulders are narrow and sleeves will hang over the end of my shoulder if I don't. Don't we find out our peculiar body measurements when we make our own clothes. This just shows how unique we all are. Thank you for doing these videos.

    This tutorial was great, but I also have thinner arms and go up several sizes from bust to protruding waist to hips. It looks like a 16 to 22/24. The pattern I'm working with is sized 18- 24. Is it possible to use this technique in reverse to size down to a 16 at the shoulders without making the armscye too large?

    Kim, thank you for your video, it was easy to follow and I’ve completed the alteration to my Love Notions Classic Tee Full Bust. I was wondering if the sleeve pattern needs to change. My shoulder is XS but my body is L which is quite a big difference. I’m thinking I won’t change the sleeve and stick with the L size without alteration. Do you know if this will work?

    • @dorothysdaughtersews

      Hi, Diane- the beauty of this method is that you can keep the larger sleeve. Since you traced the larger armscye, the sleeve doesn’t need to change.

    Kim, I'm doing a narrow shoulder adjustment but not sure if it's enough. Can you clarify where the sleeve and body should meet at the shoulder? Is it close to the bone that you can feel? Perhaps at the outer part of your bra strap or further out where your shoulder rounds into your upper arm? thx!

    • @dorothysdaughtersews
      @dorothysdaughtersews  4 роки тому

      Hi, Heide- I think it is a little subjective, but for me, it’s when the neckline feels right and the sleeve/bodice joint is right at my shoulder joint. It all depends on it feels and looks to you.

    • @heidefries1825
      @heidefries1825 4 роки тому

      @@dorothysdaughtersewsHi Kim, thanks - good to know there is wiggle room for where the seam should fall. After making the adjustment the seam is on the edge of where my arm begins and about 1.5" from the joint in my shoulder (where my bra strap aligns). It would look better even 1/2" further in. What would be the best approach for further adjusting? Shall I go down another size and re-do the narrow shoulder adjustment to the larger arm or is there another option? BTW, the larger arm fits perfectly and it is a true joy to have a proper length! 😊

  • @deannesherriff3247
    @deannesherriff3247 2 роки тому

    Hello Kim from France :D, i came across your video thinking that i had to do a narrow shoulder but based to your explanation, i don't think i have to. (but it helps me a lot, i understand better when to do that). I still quite stuck because i made a toile for a fitted dress but when i raised for example my arms, i ended wit fabric that hangs across the front bodice , and i need to replace the dress after it rides up. Do you have some advice please ? i dont know what to do thanks a lot Ndollo

    • @dorothysdaughtersews
      @dorothysdaughtersews  5 років тому +1

      Hello! What a great question. Without seeing exactly what is going on, to me it seems as if somewhere around the armscye it is too tight. If I were to make an educated guess, I would say you need a broad back adjustment, which would give you arms enough room to move and allow the garment to not get “stuck” in the wrong places. Anyway, that’s what I would try next with a toile. Unless you are in need of an FBA? If so, I would try that first. I can demonstrate a way to do the broad back adjustment at the end of this Friday’s Sewing School Video.

    • @dorothysdaughtersews
      @dorothysdaughtersews  5 років тому +1

      In doing a bit more thinking and delving into my,fit references, you may also need a full bicep adjustment to give more room in the arms. Another, less scientific thing to try is to add an equal,amount to the sleeve width and side seams. It would widen both your under arm area and your sleeve width. That is very simple to do. The good news after a lot of trial and error, you will know your body and how to fix that on every blouse and dress going forward.

    I appreciate all your work on this, I know it isn't easy to make a video, but with the 2 errors you made with which sizes you were tracing and the shadow of the numbers coming through the tracing paper, I just got frustrated. Not wanting to be mean but maybe you should consider re-doing this and mentioning what to do if a person has small upper arms and narrow shoulders, but large bust.

    • @dorothysdaughtersews
      @dorothysdaughtersews  4 роки тому

      I’m very sorry I frustrated you. You are right: it’s not easy. I did correct the error when I misspoke. If you have small arms and narrow shoulders, this is not the the adjustment for you. You should do a full bust adjustment on a smaller size.
