Fantastic video. I’ve been doing a low carbohydrate diet since late 1999 and even though I am diabetic, keep my blood sugars mostly in the non-diabetic normal ranges. I now mostly use pure monk fruit as a sweetener, but have wondered about the blood sugar impact of some of the ones you tested. One note, when you are doing this kind of test don’t forget about the dawn phenomenon. This is where your liver stores glycogen overnight and releases it in the early morning, so even though you have not yet eaten anything, your blood sugar can still go up. While you usually see the dawn phenomenon written about in connection to diabetes, it is a biological process that happens in all of us.
Glad to know that you have maintained your blood sugar levels. I am planning to use Monk Fruit as sugar replacement. Would you recommend it based on your experience?
Some early research on The Dawn Phenomenon was on US Vietnam soldiers that were held captive for years. They were kept in complete darkness for very long periods. They became so in tune with their body, that they could always tell when it was around 4- 6 am. Their body’s would tell them. I’m diabetic and both Dawn Phenomena and “Waking Stress” as my Dr from Johns Hopkins tells me. My sugars will rise in the early morning hours but I don’t get up until later. After getting up (past the Dawn Phen) my sugars continue to rise.

You can reverse your diabetes in months. The science is even better than the food videos! You can really understand what happens in your body and exactly how to reverse it. My story; a month ago, my fasting blood sugar had climbed to 245. That is bad! With keto and intermittent fasting my fasting glucose is 101 and my glucose after a meal is 127! Normal post meal is anything under 140. You can eat amazing food, you can feel great and, even better, your diabetes does not have to progress! Good luck to you! Oh and I've dropped 13 lbs in the time that blood sugar and blood pressure has corrected itself.

This is one of the most helpful videos since most of us don't have the discipline to do this, have to rely on manufacturers, and the fact that you are both testing. So great. Thank you!
I cannot believe the effect of the xylitol! It's been my go to sweetener. DOH! It does explain a lot so thank you both for putting yourself through the digestive issues for this!
My wife and I want to take the time out of our day to say thank you tremendously for this video. We had no idea what a couple of those sweeteners were doing to our blood glucose levels. Again, thank you both so very much!
Even though I dont watch your channel and am not Keto, as someone with SIBO I have found this particular video invaluable. Thank you for testing all these substances in your body and giving us the real data on how they responded. Thanks for doing the work.
Sucrolose adversely affected my heart, for 2 years of using it, heart palpitations that got worse and more severe over time, exhaustion, light headed.. docs couldn't figure it out. Stopped using Sucrolose ie Splenda.. symptoms faded away, I never felt as strong after that episode either.. bad stuff imo
The reality is that these alternative sweeteners are either too new to have been rigorously studied, or there's just not enough independent interest in doing so, and we aren't really going to know all the long-term effects of using them for many years. We certainly cannot rely on the conclusions reached by the companies who make them, as we know historically that food manufacturers will lie, cheat, and steal to make a profit. The best bet is to limit your use of all of them until long-term studies show them to be definitively safe.
@@migeru243 I feel the same, there are so much money involved that you cannot really rely on what these companies are saying. People knock fruits lately, but are ok with these things. Why? Yes, an apple has some sugar, but good things as well. I know it is not fashionable to say these days, but some balance does not hurt.
Love you two! I'm six months into my keto journey, started on day of diagnosis. Blood sugar controlled within weeks and so far 50 lbs lost. You two provide so much information and you're nice to watch, thank you.

I love to watch this video every now and then just to remind me about the sweetener info. It all is so confusing sometimes! God bless you two for all the work you do for us - and have for such a long time! It has been fun to watch your lives evolve too.
I discovered this channel this week. This is the video that pushed me to subscribe! I'm not doing Keto but following a low carb diet and I love your straight forward info and advice.
Thanks for doing this guys. Very helpful. I have been on keto since March last year and have totally stayed away from sweeteners and the sweet taste as a whole. I have occasionally eaten sweet stuff but always mindful of the fact that it was a bit of treat. I’m always scared of the slippery slope phenomenon whereby I once again embrace the sweet taste and start adding loads of sweeteners and yet feel dissatisfied. If I decide to try a sweetener, this video will be my starting point. Thanks for taking one for the team.
This was interesting. I would like to see it done with insulin levels, which is probably impossible due to how hard it is logistically and financially to test this much. Many argue that even tasting sweets causes an insulin response, even if it doesn’t cause a glucose spike. Maybe that’s explains why glucose levels actually dropped after the some of the sweeteners. If it causes an insulin response, whatever glucose was in the blood was reduced by the insulin that was triggered by the body thinking it was eating sugar.
What you pointed out is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT to those of us who are obese and have hyperinsulinemia --Dr Fung Intermmitant fasting expert says that although no studies have been done on effect of sweeteners on insulin - None of the obese people who are substituting sugar with sweeteners BIG TIME are losing weight - so - perhaps just the taste of sweet triggers insulin response
@@selini7774 That's a fair point, although correlation does not always equal causation, as they say. It's not because obese people who substitute sugar with sweeteners are failing to lose weight that the sweeteners per se are to be held accountable. Often, overweight individuals, particularly Americans, will go out for fast food and choose a Diet Coke over a regular Coke, thinking it'll make them "healthier"; they'll then procede to consume 2400 calories through cheeseburgers, fries, milkshakes, etc. It's absolutely futile to replace sugar with sweeteners if you continue to gorge such inordinate, exorbitant amounts of ultra processed junk. I'd like to see the weight evolution of people who follow healthy diets yet consume sugary beverages recplace such beverages with sweeteners. Just my two cents.
Was thinking the exact same - the blood glucose level drops seem to indicate an insulin spike, which means the sweeteners are putting the body into the fat-gain state and would explain why artificial sweeteners seem to stall weight loss in many people.
Thank you for testing these products in this way. I consider myself to be quite on top of the sweetener industry. I use a Xylitol/Stevia blend in everything and recommend this to everyone. As a result of your testing, I am switching to Erythritol rather than Xylitol. This is important information. I would like to see you do more videos comparing the dangers of artificial sweeteners. Very good job.
Awesome guys. My husband is diabetic and wore a continuous glucose monitor. We tested keto breads. Wow, most spiked his blood a lot! Aunt Millie was the best. If you just worried about keto (me) a lot of stuff is probably fine, but diabetes, wow. It’s not always what you think! Good vid guys!

Thanks so much for the info...and for induring the GI distress in performing this testing to help others... I hope it wasn't too bad... much appreciation from this Keto newby...
It’s funny how people have different tastes, I find erythritol and stevia extremely bitter yet others find it okay Erythritol by itself tastes okay but as soon as I put it into something it tastes bitter, lots of aftertaste.
i know 2 people who loved their aspartame...one guy took 6 packets per cup of coffee ..tho other 3 packets each cup of coffee but drank coffee all day ...............both got pancreatic cancer ,,one is no longer with us
And it *can* upset the microbiome balance, leading to increased inflammation, so those of you low carbing due to Lyme disease, this one is a big no-no.
I use erythritol and stevia. I would like to see Leto/glucose reaction to high fiber foods like chai seeds or flaxseed or different beans.... And/or different vegetables like green beans/tomatoes/spinach.
Thanks for this video! I’ve been wondering why my ketones level has been dropping, even though I’ve been eating very low carb. I’ve been enjoying some lovely sugar free baked goods bought from my local supermarket which are labeled as ‘keto’. Reading the ingredients, I see they are sweetened with Xylitol. That would explain my dropping ketone levels. Thanks for the info!
Hey great video. Like your approach, I am a chemist and recently diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic. In the past year I have come down from the low 300's to 235 pounds. Mainly following a keto diet. As you state everything in moderation, also I have been organic for a number of years, my wife and I raise, hunt and grow most of our own food. I am not a fan of 'artificial' anything including sweetners. I would like to point out a few things that you might want to consider if you run this again. Data points you might want to include in your DOE (Design of Experiment) I would like to see your blood glucose levels at 30, 60 and 120 minutes. Different compounds will digest and absorb at different rates. Also you should drink water with your "sugar" to assist in dilution and absorption into your digestive tract. You might have done this but it was not in the video. Getting your morning baseline is good. Thanks for the work.
Thank you for making this video. I use Monk Fruit because it has antioxidants. I'm glad to know it doesn't mess with blood sugar levels and doesn't mess with digestion.
But these guys are not diebetics so we cannot say the blood glucose results of their small experiment is representative for a diebetic. Secondly and most importantly, we do not know the long term impact of these substances. How they impact kidneys in the long run?.
@@TheMrgoodboy2 The one I was taking was absolutely not good for me nor my health. I wasn't going off their meter readings, as much as I wanted to find options better than, you guessed it, Apartame. I swapped over to Monkfruit. I'm new to keto, but within days I have lost weight and my DK is no where in site. I was suffering so bad but here I am feeling loads better.
@@quirkyavocado_-3558 very happy to hear that. I am a diebetic my self. But i am really worried how stevia, monk fruit or arithratol impack my kidneys long run. As diebetics, kidney protection is the most important thing.
I am so glad you guys did this. I was not surprised with aspartame but it has been my experience that if I consume too much of it over time, my blood glucose is affected negatively and not only just after consumption but on overall readings throughout the day and night. I am glad to see monk fruit in the selections and was pleased with your results. Primal Edge Health uses it and swears it is the gold standard, so it is nice to see that he is right again. I was not surprised by maltitol but I was a little thrown off by xylitol so this will go on my ingredient watch list. Also, I love how consistent and methodical you two are with your experiments, so thanks again for another great video and take-aways.
YES. although the maltitol would have killed me. I can do erythritol and allulose without too much bother but sorbitol and maltitol put me on the porcelain all day!
Stevia causes my sinuses to become inflamed. At first I thought it was a random reaction to the air or something else, but it kept happening without fail. After doing a little reading on it, turns out stevia is a relative of ragweed.
Some Xylitols are produced from corn... the better one is Birch xylitol. Just curious if testing these two against each other would make an impact on sugar levels. I clicked on your link for Xylitol and it never states where the xylitol is derived from (which usually means it’s made from corn). If you do make another video be sure to include Birch. Thanks!! Love your vids!!!!
I can’t touch stevia - it makes me SO dizzy! Lankato’s Monkfruit blend has allowed me to love lower carb. Yay! Thanks, y’all, for doing this. You’re amazing!
Yes, same here. Stevia is the devil for me. Love the Lakanto. BochaSweet tastes just like sugar with no aftertaste but I can't find much info on it other than the claims on the packaging.
Thanks so much for taking one (or dozens) for the team!!!! I have used liquid Sucralose for years and after starting Keto and doing great with my new way eating I was hoping I wouldn't have to quit using my great sweetener!!!! Thanks again!
Xylitol is good to be used in ice cream you want to store for longer times in the fridge, it helps to avoid getting superhard icecreams as you get with Erythritol.
I found Megha and Matt’s review of sweeteners extremely helpful! I know now to avoid xylitol and look out for maltitol on products that claim to be Keto friendly. They aren’t! This information is particularly important for people with cancer that are following a Keto diet because sugar is rocket fuel for cancer cells. Keep up the great work, Megha and Matt. Just bought a Kindle version of your cookbook and expect it will be as helpful as your videos.
Hey, love your content! Just wanted to point out that a DROP in blood sugar indicates an INSULIN RESPONSE (meaning your body thinks you ate sugar, but there wasn't any added to your bloodstream) so the best sweetners are the ones that have NO effect, up or down!
I cannot eat erythritol. If I chew a half a piece of gum with it in it it tears my stomach up for hours. I realize most people it doesn't bother. I pretty much use organic stevia powder if I need to sweeten something. I tried alulose because I wanted to bake something and it didn't bother my stomach at all as long as it's in something that is cooked. The few times I've tried it in things that were not cooked it did upset my stomach. I've used stevia for 40 years. It is so improved on its taste through the years. I do like the fact that if I decide I want to bake something which is very seldom. The alulose seems to work when it's cooked. Thank you so much for the time that you've taken to do this video. It was a lot of good information for everybody
Great video, thanks for risking your health for us. I'm interested in fiber syrups like fiber yum and sorbitol. Matt, did you retest the stevia? What were the results?
This is the best video I’ve ever seen comparing the different sweeteners and their effect on blood sugar and blood ketone levels
Dr. Berry and KetoConnect together. This is excellent.
Is coconut sugar ok to eat on keto? Does anybody know if there's a video like this about it?
It is not. It's just sugar.
LOL...really?
Was this about the sugar comment? If so, then yes. Coconut sugar is sugar. It has a lower GI than cane sugar, but it still spikes blood glucose.
Summary:
1. Sugar is subtly sweet. Ketones dropped and blood glucose level increased.
2. Stevia shows mixed results.
3. Allulose tastes good and does not affect ketones or blood glucose level. Bad GI distress though.
4. Sucralose is intensely sweet and does not affect ketones or blood glucose.

We had no idea what a couple of those sweeteners were doing to our blood glucose levels.
Again, thank you both so very much!

such good info. Thanks guys, Your Keto advice has helped me drop over 110 lbs now, since July of this year. I hope you have an amazing holiday.
MrTangtheCat wow 👏🏼
Wow, you guys are hard core taking that stuff straight. High quality info, thank you very much.
I thought I was crazy because the Akins candy makes my sugar go through the roof. Makes sense now, thank you 😊
Even though I dont watch your channel and am not Keto, as someone with SIBO I have found this particular video invaluable. Thank you for testing all these substances in your body and giving us the real data on how they responded. Thanks for doing the work.
Can you make a video with the different Keto Breads and flours? With the blood test and keto tests please. Wraps would be welcome as well.
Sucrolose adversely affected my heart, for 2 years of using it, heart palpitations that got worse and more severe over time, exhaustion, light headed.. docs couldn't figure it out. Stopped using Sucrolose ie Splenda.. symptoms faded away, I never felt as strong after that episode either.. bad stuff imo
hope you tried some ubiquinol and ribose to heal your heart
Glad you are feeling better
Stevia can cause heart and kidney issues with too much consumption too
The reality is that these alternative sweeteners are either too new to have been rigorously studied, or there's just not enough independent interest in doing so, and we aren't really going to know all the long-term effects of using them for many years.
I cannot tell you how valuable and appreciated this test is. Out of all the conflicting information out there, this is a definitive breath of fresh air.
I think your two are amazing! Thank you so much for being who you are. I am so excited 4 weeks and 20 lbs!! I used to be on Atkins for years and now I am on Keto that is Atkins 2.0 lol
Clearly, this video is now the gold standard for keto sweetener tests.
MATT, your blood glucose rose 9 points on STEVIA. Did you retest STEVIA as you said you were going to do, and what was the outcome? Thank you!
Oh, and PS. Xylitol is deadly to dogs. So if you use it, don't leave this lying around where they can get to it.
This needs to be at the top
It's deadly to all animals I belive!
only in LARGE amounts. research.
The lethal dose is 0.1g per kg of the dog's weight. 1 stick of gum can have .3-.4 g in it. So it's not that large a dose to kill.
I was really hoping they'd mention that. Especially since they have a dog themselves.
you guys have gotten so much more comfortable on camera and its great to see everything evolve, keep it up!
Some interesting results, matt how did you go when re tested stevia?
I love Xylitol.....that should have been my first warning sign.
I don't know why I found this humerous! Lol, But so true
It is the closet taste to sugar and to me even better than sugar, guess it's going to have to go.
Kellye Raiborn erythritol is way better in most ways!
em nesia omg yes, I spent most of a night in the bathroom
😹😹😹😹😹😹 lol
Thanks for doing this guys. Very helpful. I have been on keto since March last year and have totally stayed away from sweeteners and the sweet taste as a whole. I have occasionally eaten sweet stuff but always mindful of the fact that it was a bit of treat. I’m always scared of the slippery slope phenomenon whereby I once again embrace the sweet taste and start adding loads of sweeteners and yet feel dissatisfied. If I decide to try a sweetener, this video will be my starting point. Thanks for taking one for the team.
Loved how direct you guys were.
I loved this ... I swear you guys are the blue print to this keto thing lol
Wow. Awesome info. Great method. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this video! What an experiment it really opened my eyes to maltitol
I just started my Keto journey, so this was SUPER helpful! Thanks so much for doing this :)
Thanks for being our test dummies
Awesome guys. My husband is diabetic and wore a continuous glucose monitor. We tested keto breads. Wow, most spiked his blood a lot! Aunt Millie was the best. If you just worried about keto (me) a lot of stuff is probably fine, but diabetes, wow. It’s not always what you think! Good vid guys!
I use monk fruit in my bullet proof coffee and desserts/fat bombs and was wondering if I needed to switch... so I really appreciate this video... Thanks so much for the info...and for induring the GI distress in performing this testing to help others... I hope it wasn't too bad... much appreciation from this Keto newby...
The most helpful video I have ever watched for keto. Everyone doing keto should watch this!
At first I thought it wasn't a great test due to how the impact of interplay of food . With sweetner but leave it to these too I'm assured.
So glad Erythritol came out so well! It's what I enjoy in baking and my tea!
It’s funny how people have different tastes, I find erythritol and stevia extremely bitter yet others find it okay
Erythritol by itself tastes okay but as soon as I put it into something it tastes bitter, lots of aftertaste.
@@adeliaemailnelson136 They all taste terrible to me.
@@adeliaemailnelson136 its in ur genetic. .same effect cilantro get to some ppl..taste like soap to them.
Thank you for this! I have xylitol and erythritol and mistakenly thought they had the same glycemic index. Makes all the difference to know.
I’m curious as to what the affects of honey would be. Great video. Thanks for doing this for us.
And coconut sugar too
@@nellkells3290 And yacon syrup, please
Off course like normal sugar
You make me feel better about drinking Stevia water while fasting. Thanks!
i know 2 people who loved their aspartame...one guy took 6 packets per cup of coffee ..tho other 3 packets each cup of coffee but drank coffee all day ...............both got pancreatic cancer ,,one is no longer with us
Jennie Spooner wow!! That’s terrible
Wow sad to hear..but thanks for sharing
When Sucralose first came out, I read a study that it does interfere with the function of the mitochondria
And it *can* upset the microbiome balance, leading to increased inflammation, so those of you low carbing due to Lyme disease, this one is a big no-no.
It also is linked to contributing to cancers
I use erythritol and stevia.
I would like to see Leto/glucose reaction to high fiber foods like chai seeds or flaxseed or different beans....
And/or different vegetables like green beans/tomatoes/spinach.
Susan F. That’s a sweetener.
Great video. I just trashed my xylitol. Thank you so much.
Awesome video guys thank you I ordered some Allulose 👍👍
great work guys really appreciate the hassle and effort you put in this video
Thanks for the work.
erythritol isn't artificial
@@guswrethman2156 While it does occur in nature, what is used in food processing is synthetically manufactured...
Thanks guys. This was really a great video. I would like to see you test different fruits.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! I've always wondered!
Thank you for making this video. I use Monk Fruit because it has antioxidants. I'm glad to know it doesn't mess with blood sugar levels and doesn't mess with digestion.
She so cute..."good ol' sugah, you're my sugha!" Love this couple and this channel!
Thanks for taking one, or some, for the team!
Very, very helpful. I thank you and your days of digestive distress for this video!
I watched this again after 1.5 years of doing keto. Lost 36 lbs. 13 lbs to go.
As a diabetic, it's nice to know these things to take care of my health. This definitely was great information. Thanks!
@@TheMrgoodboy2 Moderation is probably the key to preserving the kidneys. Some over do it, but I'm not one who wants to end up on dialysis.
Stevia left after taste in my mouth that I can’t take, I made a oatmeal bread and wow 😣🤫 I will not bake again with stevia😖thanks for the video👍🏻
SUSANA CARBAJAL seriously! I can’t believe they just ate it straight haha, they’re tougher than I am
I agree that this is the best video I have seen on sweeteners. As a diabetic information like this is gold to us
I am so glad you guys did this.
Габрюша Б try liquid sucralose.
Thank you for risking your GI to bring us this research
YES. although the maltitol would have killed me.
KC P me to
Valuable info. Thanks!
Wow!!! Thank you!!! KC P!!!
@@jadedoptimist6364 dont mention it 🙂
Wow I’m dealing with horrible sinuses right now. Thank you!

Y’all did a great job!! Thank you guys for doing this!! Y’all should check what kind of impact honey has. Keep up the great videos!!
OMG that was awesome, thank you for testing for me!!! Learned so much.
Thank you very much for this video! I’m heart broken about the maltitol in my beloved Atkins bars, but I needed to be aware since I’m diabetic.
karen campanaro that was malitol syrup that they tried.. it’s different . Check your blood sugar after you eat the Atkins bars. I too love them
Great video, this was exactly what I was looking for. I think I will get erythritol and monk fruit.
“You *my* sugar.” 🥰
I think Megha was expecting a little more than just a simple "thanks" from Matt when she said that to him.. lol. Bless.
@@citizenk8125 He shoulda answerd : So you tryna say i knock you out of keto you dumb Bitch?
I love this channel. Easy to understand - packed full of relevant information. Thank you for sharing.
Good to know... thank you. Hope they test each next time too.
Good point. I just remembered it being derived from birch. A corn product-can’t be good.
I think the video is sponsored
I personally use Xylitol from birch.. and they say positive things about sucralose . Yayyy they're not thinking about the long term annoying video
Dextrose is also corn..
I always come back to this video whenever I want to try something new to check with y’all first. Thanks you guys!
BochaSweet tastes just like sugar with no aftertaste but I can't find much info on it other than the claims on the packaging.
we can find Monk fruit in amrica

Thanks so much for taking one (or dozens) for the team!!!! I have used liquid Sucralose for years and after starting Keto and doing great with my new way eating I was hoping I wouldn't have to quit using my great sweetener!!!! Thanks again!
Xylitol is good to be used in ice cream you want to store for longer times in the fridge, it helps to avoid getting superhard icecreams as you get with Erythritol.
Thanks for testing Allulose. There's not much info about it online as it's still new. Glad to hear it falls in the good category.
Just bought a Kindle version of your cookbook and expect it will be as helpful as your videos.

i am diabetic and this helped me to see what sugar subs not to use, i sure do not want any sugar sub to raise my blood sugar, thanks
What’s the effect of these on gut health, ghrelin, and leptin production?
Hey, love your content! Just wanted to point out that a DROP in blood sugar indicates an INSULIN RESPONSE (meaning your body thinks you ate sugar, but there wasn't any added to your bloodstream) so the best sweetners are the ones that have NO effect, up or down!
It could go down over a half hour natural with no carb in take. If it was a big drop but a point or too seems insignificant.
Great couple and a great work team👍👍👍
