It really feels like a budget proof of concept title, I'd be curious to see what Obsidian does with the bigger budget Microsoft has given them BUT it is possible their glory days are behind them, I mean according to Chris Avellone (One of their founders and most famous writer) a lot of the team that made New Vegas left and the management is not great.

the team that made outer worlds is not the same obsidian that made new vegas. it's like when people say id is great because they made doom and quake. it's not the same people at all, so expecting the same quality out of companies is pointless. companies don't make good games, people do. so learn who the talented devs are, and follow them. not the companies.

The literal 2 creators of fallout are the ones who came over for the outer worlds. So im not sure this tracks at all. ^^

Honestly, I don’t really like Obsidian.
I really loved their parent company, Black Isle, and I love New Vegas and the team that made it (Chris Avellone, Josh Sawyer, etc.) more than I love myself. But according to Chris once he left, the management was extremely terrible. A-lot of people that gave up their paychecks or worked overtime weren’t compensated by the boss initially (Chris, being the literal god he is, managed to eventually convince him with the aid of a higher-up), and the contracts they give to people that leave the company can be dickish and borderline unethical. (Chris, when he left, wasn’t allowed to disclose any information about their internal affairs, and was told that he couldn’t work on any other RPG’s)
I’m not saying that Obsidian is terrible per se, its games still have great designs and potential. But it still has pretty sketchy business practices, like a kinda ‘less bad’ Bethesda.
Let’s hope they’ll be under better management for future frontiers. Maybe they already are.
Oh and, The Epic Games Store sucks don’t @ me.

@@Elnegro.. Really.... No. Obdisian games didn't need romances. That's BioWare's schtick, and in Obsidian games I found they always felt a bit forced. I'll take some good old-fashioned deep friendships over "sweet, I can bang anyone" any day of the week. BioWare have done a few good romances in their time, but they're about the only company to pull it off, though their talent at doing that has definitely gone downhill in successive titles.
Moreoever, the "romances" in Bethesda games have been absolute trash. I've had more meaningful relationship with my enchanted equipment in TES games than in any TES/Fallout game. A click-to-fuck interaction is the kind of shitty mods that gave Dragon Age mods a bad name.

@@AmstradHero Really yes. Nothing needs anything that's a stupid point. No one needs guns but peaple want guns, just like they do romance options. Romance options go way back in terms of fallout, and it never felt forced to me. You live in a wasteland, and you're a man. The romance options in f 1 and 2 usually had story implications for ex the 2 that I mentioned were a way to get a code to a safe, and to figure out how to end a mob boss, ofc sleeping with both is just a extra step. That said your felt forced bit doesn't seem logical at all. Don't see what Bethesda has to do with obsidian, but yeah Bethesda romances are pretty trash. Bethesda's romances aren't good for a number of reasons
      1. They are forced
      2. Do to then being forced they aren't done well
That said I'd take bad romance options over none any day, it makes no sense that my charcter a alpha male Chad isn't getting action.

Tbh, I think it's about expectations plus how they sold it.
This game is clearly more of a AA title instead of a AAA title. And with the small budget Obsidian had they wouldn't be able to do a whole lot with the game. But they still tried to sell it as a AAA title with the 60$+ and everything.
It's a decent game on its own, but i get the feeling that this is the type of game that's made to test the waters/prove its worth and then when the sequel comes around (if they make one) it'll be amazing.

Bethesda's reputation going down is part of it. Part of it is also some people went back and played the OG Fallouts after getting exposed to the franchise via 3 or NV and NV is much more consistent with the OG games in both theme, tone and locations. I pretty much agree with every point you make. I liked the game. It was fun and I happened to do a Fallout 4 playthrough up to the release of this game so I could compare and contrast (I do miss VATS and hardly ever used Outer World's slo-mo.) But I'll admit that I did have a "that's it?" kind of reaction at the end. I only saw the first trailer. I like to temper my expectations by only seeing one or two trailers for a game or movie. Just to gauge if I'm interested in something and, if I am, keep spoilers to a minimum. Considering the issue of malnutrition, which was actually nicely teased, we never really get to solve that problem. I honestly thought the botanical gardens would play a bigger role. They kind of solved one problem, the nutrients, so I figured the 2nd would be to find a suitable replacement for the fertilizer. Then finally getting around to owning enough land to actually physically plant fruits and vegetables for sustainable human life.
Whatever my complaints, I will say that I do find myself eager for a follow up. This was a good base to work off of. Obsidian got bought out by Microsoft so if there is a sequel, I can see myself buying an xbox just to play this.
Another nitpic I have. I like the helmet removal option so I can see characters but I wish there was something similar for the armor. I like the default costumes the characters had and, judging from your footage, you seem to have just given everyone the same bulky armor that I did. Which looks fine but kind of boring. I wish there was an option to change that.

As someone who typically has a hard time getting into these games, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Outer Worlds and its world-building. The hyperbolic and satirical dialogue was a fresh change from many games that take themselves super seriously. The only deduction I can really come up with is that, since I had no prior experience with Fallout games, I didn't come in with a particular expectation. And maybe that's why I enjoyed my playthrough so much. For what it's worth (and at the risk of being crucified), I started playing FNV afterwards and genuinely couldn't get 30 minutes in because it felt so dated. To top the dullness, in the first game Eder was looking for "why did his brother abandoned his nation and joined holy crusade", but in the second game, while standing in presence of instigator of that crusade, he forgot about it!
Old Obsidian's writing always was sharp as nails, characters spoke in concise but very impactful words, and the end of the quest brought significant changes in all parties involved. What you said about Obsidian at the end of the video was perfectly spot on. The industry somehow grew to be excited about a developer who literally just made games out of the scraps and assets of a well established franchise.
Personally I prefer Kotor 1 instead of 2, and I'm one of the minorities who also prefer Fallout 3 instead of New Vegas (actually Fallout 1 & 2 are the better ones, but that's another subject).
Anyway, Kotor 2 for me was like a bigger version of the first one, with unrealized ideas and an extreme lack of focus. We've got that content restoration mod and all, but I don't think making a game big even bigger and more convoluted is the answer.
Also with New Vegas: it's Fallout 3 with a big chunk of empty deserts between points of interest, with more bugs as much as gameplay hours. I know about all the fafle between them and Bethesda, but again, it's the same story as with Kotor 2 all over again. So everytime a project they do come out as so-so, will we blame the publishers? So when you mentioned friends you made along the way coming in the final battle. It made me realize, this is Obsidian's bread and butter.
I recently got back into Knights of the Old Republic 2. That game came out in 2004 and the ending climatic battle has the factions you sided with from the various planets coming to your aid.
I checked their other games and the same thing happens in Alpha Protocol, Southpark The Stick of Truth, Tyranny, and I may be missremembering but I think something on a smaller scale happens in Dungeon Siege III.
Someone else will have to confirm if it happens in Never Winter Nights 2 and Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 for me.

With the shoulder-shots in dialogue, I'll defend them a little bit by pointing out what Fallout 4 did wrong: In Fallout 4, the game suffered quite a bit from trying to have conversation be something that happened almost exclusively in real-time in full-view. For example, you might have a conversation in a dark area where it's hard to see who you're talking to. This also prioritizes being able to navigate through a conversation more quickly, which is a small contributor to the dialogue wheel.
The other two reasons why you have the dialogue wheel would be that those complicated animations cost money to make (so each dialogue option they give you costs them more money than it normally would), and the protagonist is voiced (probably because everyone was complaining about silent protagonists at the time).
On a tangent: The protagonist being voiced is the biggest contributor to F4's poor dialogue system. For one, voice acting costs money, but the big thing is "redundancy". A big part of the reason why you can't read out your whole line of dialogue in F4 is because it would make the voice acting redundant: You've already read what they're about to say, so there isn't much of a point in hearing them repeat it verbatim. How this problem is often solved is by having it so the player doesn't know exactly what their character will say.
The portrait conversations of Outer Worlds are intended to make it so you can clearly see who you're talking to and have no distractions. It's not necessarily the right call, but they did make it with intention for a reason other than nostalgia.

What really broke this game for me was a moment in my last session, and the way I resolved the Edgewater dilemma. I had already beaten the game once a while ago, around launch, and figured I'd fire it up again to kill some time. I was having a good time, managed to build a strong sniper build that could one or two shot most humanoid enemies, etc. On my last playthrough, I redirected the power to Edgewater, and figured that this time I should do the opposite in order to see the difference. When I came back to Edgewater, I failed the speech check to get Reed to call off his guards, and as soon as I went to grab the power converter, a firefight ensued that eventually pulled in most of the town. The bad part? Parvati was still in my party. This sweet little girl, who earlier begged for me to reconsider my decision in order to save Edgewater, now had no problem running in, LMG in hand, and No Russian-ing her whole hometown, all because some stranger fell from the sky and pissed them off.

I'm not so much enamored with the type of player choice that lets you complete a quest in different playstyles as I am with the type that lets you control a quest's outcome and then see it impact the world from then on - like in New Vegas when you have to choose where to reroute the power at Helios One, or whether to activate Archimedes, or the choice of helping/sabotaging the ghouls departing in rockets, or the choice to defend/assassinate president Kimball, approaching the event of his visit from different angles of different factions. Objective events, subjective approaches, and control over the outcomes, based on who the player roleplays at. That's the kind of player choice I want. Too bad The Outer Worlds was so underwhelming in this respect.

Something just hit me after comparing KOTOR 2 and New Vegas, when you mentioned the ending of Outer Worlds as "the Third Battle for Hoover Dam." Having a final battle where all your friends show up while you fight through mobs of enemies is basically the signature way Obsidian knows how to end big RPGs. They've done this back in KOTOR 2. In KOTOR 2, you get to assault multiple waves of Sith at the endgame. Your allies from Dantooine and Onderon (whichever faction you helped in taking over those worlds) will help you drive them back from Citadel Station, then invade their flagship and kill the head honcho Sith before going to Malachor V and wiping out their sloppy seconds. It's the same as in New Vegas: you march from your camp, picking up your old friends that you cultivated from the story along the way, be they Enclave troopers, Brotherhood Paladins, or Boomers with a bombing plane, you guys drive back enemies starting with those closest to your location, and you push through level after level of enemies that are supposedly high-tier, but by that point, you've upgraded to the point where you can slaughter whole platoons of them with a click of a mouse. Then you get to the head bad guy wearing a mask, be it Darth Nihilus for KOTOR 2, or Legatus Lanius for New Vegas. They're supposed to be this big scary guy who decimates whole whole civilizations/tribes, but if you've properly leveled, you can kick their asses easy. My Jedi character can mind-wipe Nihilus and make him docile for a good minute or two, while my Courier can slaughter Legatus Lanius in a swordfight while wearing a ball gown or nothing but her underwear. Outer Worlds wasn't the second time they did this-it was the third, at least if you count KOTOR 2 along with New Vegas.
