@@Zen-rw2fz The lead writer of Fallout New Vegas was John Gonzalez, who is no longer with Obsidian. The main writers credited besides him were Chris Avellone, Eric Fenstermaker, and Travis Stout, and none of them work for Obsidian anymore. The lead designer of Fallout New Vegas, Josh Sawyer, is still at Obsidian, but his main focus is on the Pillars of Eternity series and not Outer Worlds. Yeah...I fear we will never again have excellent rpg's like morrowind or oblivion or fallout 3 again. The recent release of the highly anticipated cyberpunk 2077 has made this fear even more prescient in my mind. That game was our last hope.
@@sahmuss1164 That may be true, and to be fair I haven't had a chance to play it yet so I'm only going on heresay at this point. And I'm sure they will patch it and update it for years to come, and perhaps it will eventually be good. But it seems like every new major open world rpg that gets released is progressively more broken than the last. Morrowind oblivion and fo3 were buggy, of course, but still perfectly playable and *most* of the bugs weren't game breaking, even for us plebs on xbox who can't use console commands. FoNV was horriffic. I got it at a midnight release and was so excited. I played maybe two weeks and encountered no less than 3 game breaking bugs, forcing me to reload old saves and try again. The last time that happened I lost probably 8 hours of progress and said fuck it. Never picked the game up again. This is coming from a guy who has put more than 200 hours a piece in to Morrowind, Oblivion, & Fo3. I was crushed. Same thing happened with skyrim, only the bugs were more common and more game breaking, in my personal experience. I got MAYBE 20 or 30 hours in and gave up. That was also when I noticed the trend of "dumbing down", which really rubbed me the wrong way. It made the game less immersive and less interesting. Then Fo76 happened, it was as if millions of voices cried out all at once, and then suddenly were silenced. It moved the bar of bugginess so far past what was expected, not to mention the plethora of other shady merch situations. We hoped that The Outer Worlds would bring balance to the force and show devs that you CAN in fact release a COMPLETE, NON BROKEN GAME AT LAUNCH. And for the most part it did, but it increased the trend of "dumbing down" so much it was utterly forgettable. And then we have cdpr's long awaited, much hyped masterpiece, cyberpunk 2077. Not only was it going to be a fully fledged massive open world rpg with interesting story and plot points and endless choice, it would be free of bugs and playable at launch! The developer promised us they weren't like all those other greedy studios! They had integrity! But then at launch we saw it was all false promises and lies. Making the pain doubly worse. And again, I could be wrong here. I haven't played it yet so I've only heard this stuff through the grapevine. But at this point I'm going to save my money and buy it a few months down the line after they've had the chance to fix some things.
@daveyognaught Then make sure you don't live on a diet of fast food and you get your cholesterol checked on a yearly basis and do what's necessary to keep it nice and low. “If the player steals the water chip, he’s leaving the ghouls to die.” See I’m playing the first fallout now for the first time. I went to necropolis and saw the ghouls. Avoided them because I assumed they were hostile/feral. Happened upon the water chip and was like “what? I’ve been looking everywhere and it’s just in this random terminal? Alright.” Then took it and got the heck out of there. I’m just now learning that I killed those ghouls.
Bruh I played 1 fallout last month and I hate that damn save system so much it made me leave the game. So I saved near the start of the game last time and then I acquired the water chip then returned it to Overseer went to hub went to Brotherhood etc. Everything is going good until I was killed by a random encounter and I was thrown to Shady Sands. At that point I just thought it wasnt worth playing the game again.
@White-Van Helsing its sort of like the school announcement emails that they send out to everyone, if you look closely you can see who/how many people it was sent to
I remember hearing so many people saying good things about this game, from internet muckrakers, to endless Reddit posts. I then tried it, and was relatively... underwhelmed with it. The guns felt too similar, the weapon mods were boring, the status ailments barely did anything, the morality was obvious, character building was uninspiring, and free form exploration was relatively pointless since seemingly every single location was tied to a quest. I could write an entire paragraph or two on just how disappointing the arsenal was. If you ask me, it’s no big mystery that the main reason for TOW’s success was it’s timing.
No matter what the company said they were trying to use the outer worlds to combat Bethesda and use it to sell copies because thats just all companies, they made more in a year on NV then they did the entire this was in studio. It's exactly what FO76 was, an unfinished game
Exactly. It was the only Fallout-esque alternative to Fallout 76, which was/is a piece of shit in it’s own right and TOW barely succeeds it by just being mediocre
It was along the lines of "The worst that art can be is not to be bad. Bad art can still make an impact or leave a message. The worst is to be forgettable."

@@G3RM3X617 same. Its like they tried to make space fallout, but left out all the good bits. The dialogue was pretty good ill give it that. Otherwise it was a fallout knockoff.
New standard, made in the 90s. There should be more of this. Making game development easy (streamlined workflow, stock assets, most ppl using the same engines) in a saturated market is kinda messing with creativity in favor of surface level "forced realism." More studios should be looking back to what really works and then just add levels of immersion, not strip it down for mass appeal and fill it up with shaders and and the same gun mechanics we've seen a hundred times (look how successful New Blood is with the retro FPS revival, it's cuz ppl stopped making games like that despite the love for them). It's not like every game, movie or book needs to interest *everyone*. The Thief reboot is a great example of modern gameplay tropes ruining every single aspect of gameplay from the original (like uninterrupted QT animations for every motion including stealing, oh palmed face, I believe the video I'm thinking of is from this channel). I hope BG3 keeps its roots, and I picked up Pillars of Eternity II recently. I think these days if a modern Fallout 1 style game were released today, people would dismiss it as an XCOM clone. Which is extra ironic because the decades old Fallout: Tactics was already a bit of a genre clone of the original 90s XCOM. I'd love to see more 3D turn based RPGs, maybe combined with RTS elements (like Myth or Homeworld but with Baldur style RPG elements like main commander characters, with multiple forms of progression for the main characters and the deployable units etc). The kind of experiments major devs used to be willing to do. BG story and main party + Myth style combat (with pause though, basically baldur with sub groups and more gore) + Homeworld/Starcraft style research development and expansion.15 year old me would piss itself, and I used to be really hard to please if a game wasn't FPS back in those days. Either that or a Freespace 2 tier space sim meets open world RPG, so here's hoping Starfield is fantastic. Why hasn't anyone got realtime space combat right in over 20 years (afaik)? At least there is a new Descent game that I hope is good, D3 was the most fun in arcarde 6DoF I've ever had. But nothing has touched the balance of Freespace 2 for me. I digress. I might just reinstall FS2 (so nice I bought it twice/got on gog because cdrom lost long ago). If anyone wants to recommend single player space light-sim or 6 degree of freedom Descent style game (or tell me if descent 4 any good) I'll appreciate it. I go on about those games but they nailed the *feeling* of gameplay in the 90s-early 2k. That feeling is what i also miss in fallout 1, and some other classic 90s styles and story types. The feeling of some modern gameplay seems more tech demo oriented sometimes, and less like it's there for smooth, smooth fun.
This game is made by Obsidian, but the driving forces behind New Vegas have already left the company. Some of that team are still there, but apparently, not the visionary ones.
Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, the guys that created Fallout universe and Arcanum, two of the best old school RPGs, were creative leads and game designers on this game. So, no, it was not about the visionary.
@@jesperburns Obviously, it's been 10 years since New Vegas. A lot of time for people to move on or for the "old guard" to have adapted new ideas about game design. The biggest loss for Outer Worlds seem to be writers/designers like Sawyer and Avellone though.
Exactly. While I enjoyed my playthrough back then, I have absolutely no desire to play it again unless it gets some interesting DLC. No real builds and I feel like I've seen pretty much everything after a single thorough run, which is a shame. Even Fallout 4 was good for a couple of varied runs, as shallow as it was. People just really desperately wanted this game to fit into the whole Bethesda Hate Train Narrative (tm). And don't get me wrong, Bethesda has gone down the shitter - but yeah, definitely made people put this mediocre game on a pedestal because it suited the narrative.
I doomed the town, expecting a megaton scale cataclysm. Looting or people dying of thirst in the streets. I get back and everybody is just like "oh this sucks, that was mean of you". I stopped playing after that
All the civilians just mill about with no power. No looting or panicking or attacking you for destroying their job, just "Oh, guess we'll sit here until the company picks us up." And you'll hear about how bad it is, but never go back, because if you do go back, nothing actually changes or happens. Just static NPCs.
Pinkamena Pie if i recall correctly Josh left because him and chris avellone argued on a lot of things, mainly the fact that chris was extremely ticked about Josh being put in charge even though he was more qualified for the position than chris ever was. i know that josh doesn’t hold any grievances for it but apparently chris is still upset about it
my bad i was wrong it was CHRIS who left because he was bitter over josh being in charge, josh got screwed over Pillars of Eternity flopping when that was his project
That's the game's only true crime, if you ask me. And even then it's at least partly because the budget was relatively small. But the positive reception and financial success has me excited for an inevitable next main project with much grander scale
@@DomR1997 Current Obsidian aren't known for sequels but being that this has a good base ("Good" not "Great"), this deserves a more fleshed out sequel where they build upon the half decent base they created with this. The game only got praise because Obsidian Fanboys are desperate to screech about how bad Bethesda is. As an RPg the game is as mechanically deep as Fallout 4 with some systems being even more shallow than F4. Not a horrible game but way overhyped.
The best part about this game was when you went to Roseway and instead of getting money to go to Monarch and progress the main quest, you sold all the tech back to the corporations for far less money than you would have got otherwise because you were caught up in the moment by their promises... that is until I found out you could go back to the groundbreaker and miraculously find ANOTHER way to get a huge amount of money for a landing permit on Monarch. That was when it hit me that the devs really wanted you to safely land in the city on Monarch. Sure there is the option to land in the dangerous wilderness, but when money is so readily available on the Groundbreaker, why would you do anything other than safely land in the city and progress to the wilderness gradually?
Dunno, I just landed on Monarch and hammer smashed everything away that got in my way. Even on Supernova (I think that's what it was called) no encounter took longer than a few seconds with the science hammer.
I landed in the wilderness anyways cause it was the only place large enough to land with my huge balls of steel. Promptly got rekt. Had the difficulty up though and was using outdated weapons.
I went to monarch immediately after completing the first stage. The difficulty was incredible and fun, but by the time I completed monarch, i was used to a massive combat challenge that the other planets never delivered. Disappointing.
Dick Dilligaf bruh went to monarch, I got fucked, snuck by everything some how... idk, found some good weapons doubling my dps- accidentally arrived back at my shop (I don’t use the map a lot) and was able to deal with everything fairly well that I want able to before 👍

I agree, the only reason I decided to side with corporations was because I was role-playing a "mercenary" who worked for the highest bidder. I really had to RP that myself because the corporations didn't really do a good job of trying to buy me out. Like I thought the CORPORATE bad guys would be the path of greed. Get offered more money to do dirty deeds (morally questionable), but...shit I can't even remember what the point of siding with them was. I think it was like to "maintain stability" or some shit. But it was already clear that they were fucking shit up with their incompetence. So once again, my only incentive to side with Corps was "head canon" RP that my character was a (chaotic-neutral) mercenary.
When I played, I tried to RP a character who was already a believer in the capitalistic economic system in the colonies. That is, he believed that the corporations were run by incompetent people, not evil people. Therefore, I wanted to side with the Board, but the game just pushes you _so hard_ to play the rebel.
Even if FPS Fallout, the variety of enemies means that even with high end gear, the wrong situation can get you killed very, very quickly. Deathclaws, as an example, are always a threat due to their staggeringly high damage output even wearing Power Armor, their ability to rapidly close the gap, and their high damage resistance to all but a few power weapons, like missile launchers, the Fat Man, or the anti-mat rifle... and even then, you usually still needed special ammo. Sentry Bots also presented a huge challenge, as did NCR Heavy Gunners. The New Vegas DLCs turned that up to 11 either by setting you back to 0 forcing you to get all new gear and deal with short-term scarcity, or in the case of Lonsesome Road, just throwing an entire gauntlet of the strongest enemies in the game at you. Hell, even Fallout 4 makes combat shockingly dangerous at times, despite the much smoother combat mechanics making things generally easier. Enemies have a lot more power weapons, even at lower levels - a Raider camp in Lexington for example is led by a Raider with half a suit of Power Armor, a Fat Man, and an elevated position. This all in a fairly low level area where your best weapon is either the 10mm pistol or a Laser Musket... neither of which is particularly effective at range, even if you're an aim god. Super Mutant Suiciders, despite telegraphing their position through sound cues, can easily get close to you and explode you, or you may accidentally explode yourself if you hit their nuke arm. The Head Laser carried by Assaultrons fucking melts your HP bar under almost all conditions, Sentry Bots despite their mandatory downtime are now both much tougher and much more heavily armed than they used to be, Gamma Guns make the Children of Atom a *shockingly* difficult faction to engage that will utterly *melt* even high level characters if you're not watching your rads, and Deathclaws will now straight-up suplex a high level character wearing full T-51b. And if you're *not* wearing Power Armor? That suplex is now an instant kill. And that's Fallout 4, the game most people were hoping they could rub in Bethesda's face with a comparison to Outer Worlds.
I'll never understand the hate Fallout 4 gets. Is it as good as New Vegas? I'd argue yes. Sure, the writing isn't as good, nor is the quest design or the main story, but from a gameplay aspect? Just like you described, Fallout 4 is amazing.
But that's the whole point, when you do a Fallout or Elder Scrolls Games, people will be expecting an RPG, not any RPG, a good RPG. The hate fallout got was deserved, if they were going for post apocalyptic action shooter game, they've might as well have created a new IP or pointed people in the direction of games like Metro or something

@@fillosof66689 the only moment that stuck with me was having vickar debate the leaders of the iconoclasts, that was fun... but ya, not much to do with them
For me, the game was low-key preachy. Except when it was overtly preachy. The choices didn't allow some options because the devs didn't agree with it ... I think. Like all you can do with the Vicar is make him abandon who he was, or hate who he was; you can't get him to decide his path had been a good option, because it didn't fall in line with certain philosophies. Oh and the game props up quirky characters I don't care about. BUT it did have some good points sometimes; I was able to shut down the mechanics's love interest right away and I got all the xp for the whole quest line without having to tediously follow it. And I was able to betray the science guy for cash and massive xp. But mostly I never felt there was room for my character to stay in character because the choices were usually meh.
I also found it really dissatisfying that Vicar Max's arc leads to him abandoning his beliefs entirely during a hallucinogenic trip. On a certain level I accept that this was the story that the game devs wanted to tell for Max, but to me it felt forced.

@@justnoob8141 If you've played the game, you'd know what this means. For some reason, no matter what environment they're in, characters look as if there is a strong light shining through their left earlobes.
My main problem with the game was how generic my character felt, like despite all my choices i felt like you could only really either play "generic corporate puppy stomper" or "heroic space rogue with a heart of gold". The perks didn't help either, with shit like cowboy or lady killer it actually felt like you were building a character not to mention some of them actually opened up rp opportunities. All the perks do in outer worlds is make you kill stuff better. And the writing was fine but didn't hold a candle to disco elyisum which was released by an unknown team with next to no hype and with a smaller budget yet easily blew it out of the water with its creativity and genuine pen and paper feel. And honestly that's my main problem with Outer Worlds, even in 5e you can present your players with a challenge or make a unique character, even in 5e the modules are better written than the Outer World's generic "woah look at this craaazy beauracracy." But most importantly the game just felt so lacking in any sort of character building compared to any other pen and paper game or rpg on the market that I just couldn't be bothered to finish it.
I am glad you're defending 5e; I can play any D&D and have a good time, especially with creative players' characters and imaginative GMs that'll challenge you. Unfortunately Outer Worlds didn't do either. I agree that New Vegas's perks could also allow for character narrative, heh.
This bro this, I built mi character to be this charistamic good guy that sided with the corporations, thinking, maybe I'll be able to do things in a pacifist way, you know, like new Vegas? Only to realize that I couldn't, as I sided with the corporations I was immediately the bad guy no matter how much people I helped, even at the end my character has the option to say something like: now I'm calling the shots here, only to see that your character doesn't change anything. And that's the problem, you can't built a character and see how things play out with that character, in new Vegas you can build a character that sides with this faction or that one or none and you can make them feel different.
Oh yea. I love 5e, because at least then I can RP a character. Sure my party absolutely curbstomps everything that gets in our way, but we spend most of our time roleplaying. Outer Worlds, though, reminds me a bit of Destiny - mostly just shooting things in the head until you need a better gun to shoot things with. I wouldn't mind boring combat if there was a good story to go with it, but man. I honestly expected better of Obsidian... not NV better, but at least less boring than Fallout 4 (which might even be slightly better now that I think on it...).

we have lost the : immersion by gameplay instead of graphics. this is the result of years when we said, don't emphasise the graphics over gameplay, they didn't listen, they ' streamlined / simplified all rules' which we didn't want, and now they expect us to be immersed in a world that is unbelievable and you most things don't make sense. Immersion should come from gameplay design, if you have this, more human behaviour will come from that gameplay design,! the result will be more immersion by gameplay design ! I have been saying these things for over 7 years. It just got worse., you think it's going to be better? that is a nope when tabletop rpg's are undergoing the same sort of treatment, just try and play dungeons & dragons and cry to the sky why you can't be a unique character.
@fenrif you are absolutely right about this, I think it started earlier though, dungeons and dragons 3.5 was released back in 2003 , I as a thick dipshit nerd, aways said I don't play 3.5 I make my characters with 3.0 and play with the 3.0 rules. my friends just let me do my thing. the reason is that most spells and feats are streamlined to cater and balance around pvp, mages are so overpowered with a 1hour/level inivis in combat. YES might be true, but they can't attack and the spell is like this for ROLEPLAY reasons. as was it in 2nd edition! where mages were even less powerfull low level, had to get more xp to level ( yes classes level up at different xp amounts ) . for me this was the first time I really saw what was happening, this in combination in videogames was the hype of get everything in 3d. even though baldur's gate 2 was 7 miles ahead of neverwinter nights. most people think neverwinter nights was the best game ever made, it wasn't it was pretty decent though, but now it's revered as one of the best games ever. same with dragon age. which was a mediocre game, but at least it was a roleplaying game, 2 sucked balls. but now after so many years of mediocrity these games are getting praise because they are the last of their kind ( same goes for vampire the masquerade bloodlines ) The dilution of RPG games is one of the worst things ever done, you can also blame steam for that. categorizing everything as an RPG. people saying diablo is an RPG. no it's not let's call it what the developers called it when it came out : a hack and slash ! you hack and slash, get loot repeat ! great game. never was an RPG though, they knew it and that's why it was called that. now these games are called an Action RPG because leveling equals RPG ? no it doesn't. the line crossed for me when Payday2 was dignified with a RPG status, it's not a bad game , had a lot of fun with it, but an RPG because you roleplay as a bankrobber? you always roleplay as something/someone in a game. you always have an avatar. my standard retort to this kind of IQ-less mindsets is, if 'payday 2' is an RPG because you roleplay a bankrobber ! than 'thomas was alone' is an RPG because you ROLEPLAY a f*cking rectangle! I hate it that the corporate world always wants to make most of the money possible, the biggest target group is IQ less so cater to that ! what about the reason games exist? a target group with above average IQ who wanted to escape the real world because people are shit ( no other reason is needed actually ) I escaped my RL because I was severely bullied, I was 11 when I discovered D&D 2nd edition, made a lot of friends because of that, started to really like RPG's and digital games in general. always something to learn, always some problems to solve in some creative way. now i'm 35 and I quit role-playing about 5 years ago, I would love to have a decent role-playing group and or game to play, but even my friends fell to the mediocrity and don't remember how it was 20 years ago. I can't even bring myself to enjoy a bit of it while being with my friends, I'd rather play an old game by myself lately. I don't think BBT was the cause but a response of the dumbing down and now that was a main target group for it. and yes you are right, people are moving on, look at all the shooters and battle royals scooping up all the major players, which is fine, please have them. because other companies are noticing that they are losing major cash and can't keep up with these major players like fortnite, I was so happy that ubisoft might have seen the light, and is undergoing changes. because even ubisoft always makes a game that I consider : wasted potential. hopefully the potential isn't wasted now anymore, and they will cater to the group that made them big. the ones that still buy their games in their 30's and I will continue to do so for as long as I live. gaming made my live bearable, now after so many years, it just became a way of life
@Ricardo Santos I disagree, they didn't even do the technical part right. if even that was right, and had options in games for us to enhance our role-playing, while let the casuals play the game like casuals no one would even bat an eye, maybe some tryhards would say that you won't be playing the game unless you play by the hardest standards, or extra rules that are possible in the game, but that would be the end of it. no sadly I can't even play the games as I want to . when every decision you make has a consequence where you have to think before you act. my twitch shoot abilities went out the door years ago , I'm just an old man, who wants to enjoy a decent game which can challenge me mentally.
Being completely disappointed with AAA gaming industry nowadays, I find myself going way back and finding renewed interest in text-based (parser) games, and also interactive fiction genre.
It was so painfully mediocre. At the literal end of the game, i thought to myself: "Okok, we saved the colony of workers and the mad scientist, so now we should find a way to prevent the starvation of the galax..." AND the credits started rolling. Nothing i did changed anything in the great scheme of things. You can slaughter a whole planet (or section of a planet) and the people on other planets won't mention it. In Fallout: New Vegas, every decision had impact on the whole overworld. (Shoot first 2 powdergangers on sight = oops now ou want have their questlines and will get a radical different experience when interacting with their territories.) I wished their was just more of everything. Urgh.
I felt that. I was legitimately angry when I saw the credits. I thought I was beginning Act 3, not finishing the whole fucking game. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, since NV was also half baked at launch, with half the plot being cut and then reintegrated by the DLC. Apparently the DLC is going to expand the story, but I don't know how much they can salvage. Max is pretty funny and Parvati is kinda cute in the very beginning of the game. Everything else is just mediocre. Also, it feels more like a looter shooter than an RPG somehow.
@@bruhtholemew well come on, they COULD fix the game, it's not like the base mechanics or the characters are complete garbage. But they haven't done it in Deadfire, and that game was much easier to fix. As always with new Obsidian, they need to implement a couple thousands more checks and flags, and expand character reactions. Then add a dozen of science weapons, rework the factions, and add around 30 hours of content. Nothing a COUPLE OF YEARS of work couldn't fix. The writing is fine, but the plot is complete garbage. Then again, vanilla NV's plot wasn't that great, the DLC made it amazing, but, then again, they had Avellone at the time. I really don't know what to think. I pirated the game because I dislike adding another adware riddled launcher in order to play a 20 dollar game, but if they fix it at least a bit I might consider buying it. On sale.
@@ImTheMan0fSteel 76 sure 4 nah. Fallout 4 was a trash fallout game but a good game. Tows is just mediocre garbage, it's like the avg horror movie mediocre shit.
Actually in the Witcher 3, the kids are in a school in Novigrad, the spirits really did her part of the promise, but she omitted the part where she killed the whole town.
Not open world, hand holding, little choice, average game play. But the nail in the coffin for me was the enemy inventory. Weapons the enemy had not there, but a different crappy weapon will be there for no reason.
I hate THAT. If I’m low level and come across somebody above me that is depleting half my health with each shot, I WANT that weapon, and if I can kill them, I deserve it. Its one thing I always loved about Borderlands 1. If an enemy is smashing me with a rocket launcher, I can get THAT exact weapon by killing them. They went away from that into magically spawning weapons out of thin air in future games.
@@windexman2280 Same. To me though a large part was because the world of interstellar space travel doesn't fit the design. I find the world of fallout very interesting. I felt compelled to go out and forge my reputation in the wasteland. I felt as though I was making decisions in a very realistic setting. Even with the mutants and crazy science, the setting felt like it could really exist. Outerworlds just doesn't seem so realistic to me. you almost have to wonder how they weren't all dead already. I was really hyped as well. I played until i was halfway through monarch and i kind of lost interest. See, I would say outer space might not be my cup of tea, but dead space was incredible, and a dead space rpg with intractable characters would make me queef pretty hard if it was done right. So idk, I think maybe their design and how they build worlds is too tied to fallout for me to get on board with another setting.
Is that a bad thing? Like genuinely do people do that? I think I've replayed three games in my entire life that weren't just dicking around in the open world.
@@danielyoung6778 I would agree as I generally don't replay games, but fallout nv was actually one of the only games I've ever had multiple playthroughs with. For this game specifically it's kinda dissapointing imo I was expecting a somewhat similar game
I honestly stopped getting into the game when I thought the weapons and looting got boring. It didn't take long for the story to drop on me but the weapons would just be reskins, assault rifle mk 1 and assault rifle mk 2 were the same things just better damaged. I would basically just end up using the same gun the entire game. Haven't finished it either. I might one day.
I was waiting for this, the only other youtuber I heard criticizing the game is NeverKnowBest. The Outer World is mediocre and I was pretty surprised by how many people really liked it, probably the same people that loved Fallout 4 (game that I hate with all my soul) and were left disappointed by 76. Like you, I don't hate the game but I abandoned it after the first planet since it felt soulless and made me feel apathetic, so much that I started asking myself if I was missing something since everyone was praising it as it was another New Vegas. So I restarted the game with another character, explored every inch of the planet, talked with anyone, took different "paths" just to be sure of not missing something and...that was it, there was nothing to be found and I was left really bored.
'Soulless'. That's the word I thought of too when I played it. There was just something 'off' when I played it that kept me from going through the whole game.
SnakeShepard97 I enjoyed Fallout 4, don’t get me wrong it was a pretty mediocre game I was very disappointed but I find the gameplay to be a little fun. I didn’t enjoy the Outer Worlds though. I’m a big Fallout NV fan I expected a great return of RPGs. It was an RPG. Just not a good one.
@@kaisac. lmao same here It just bored me to death as soon as i reached Byzantium I just could'nt play anymore, I mean i have 200+ mods installed in Fallout 4 so there's that, but even in Vanilla FO4 was much more fun to explore than this game. Still Fallout New Vegas is one of my favorite games but clearly there has been a change in Obsidian.
The game did not feel finished at all. It was all around decent, but like most games that come out now of days, it had so much potential that was ignored.
Exactly this. I'm glad someone else gets it. So many games that come out in the past 10 years never try to go all the way. They provide a few things to sort of keep you interested but never try to give you all the things that would keep you coming back for years. Game devs surely play video games.. but sometimes it feels like they never bothered to play their own games before releasing them. I blame the crappy corporate structure... ceo's who have never even played a video game dictating to them.
@@Fren69420 To a certain extent I agree. It might have been Tod Howard, but I remember him mentioning that their studio tries to make games that they themselves want to play. Keep in mind this was well before Fallout 76 lol, but he made a great point in how game development should be. I think another thing is that most people who play games are not "gamers", which isn't a bad thing by any means, but I think people who have been playing games for at least 10 years or so have been able to really see the difference in the quality of games over the years. I don't know about you, but I watch E3 and the game development videos, the interviews, etc. You can see the difference with how these companies handle their IP's towards their audience now vs then. Certain companies know for a genuine fact that all they have to do is make their game pretty, regardless of the fact their game has zero plot or story and launches with game breaking bugs, they know people will buy it and play it. Which is really concerning to me.
@@Fren69420 I recommend watching "Designing The World of the Witcher 3" by NoClip. You can actually tell these dudes gave and still give a shit about their game.
@@slothzizi it's not Todd's fault, it's fucking Zenimax, I wish we could get them to collapse, free Bethesda, in the Morrowind dev picture, Todd looks really dedicated to game making, lead concept of Morrowind, so sad, fuck you Zenimax!
Sadly that's what Obsidian does to games. They tend to jump focus SO MUCH AND SO FAST in any game they touch. KOTOR 2 had the issue, FO:NV had the issue, even if it had AMAZING side-quests, I wanted MORE legion info and less focus on 50 people who have nothing with the plot. But even with another 2 years to dev it, I get the feeling it would have been the same since KOTOR 2 got months longer then planned, and they pissed away the endgame dev time for more side-quests.
Everyone was SOOOOOO CONVINCED that they were going to get another Fallout: New Vegas that they were blind to how shit RPGs have actually become. It isn't just Bethesda.

So am I the only one that sees The Outer as a complete disaster that was so over hyped the reviews got affected because everyone wanted it to be a good game? Not mediocre, at the end I regretted my purchase and it seems a lot of people did in the end too
Nah, I thought it was dogshit too. I am one of those smug bastards that got the MS pass for a dollar and played through the game within a month. I even got my dollar back because I cancelled the subscription on the 29th day. I still had remorse because it was play time I will never get back.

The Outer Worlds convinced me that we'll just lap up anything and praise it as "good" as long as there's no superficial flaws. Having played the game as soon as it came out, and finishing it rather quickly, I was astounded to see the tremendous praise for TOW. I just couldn't understand how people thought it was an 8-10/10 game, but yet, I couldn't identify any significant flaws with the game. And that's because there isn't really any, and in a sense, that is it's greatest flaw. TOW is by the books, it does nothing significant, and for me personally, it's literally the worst type of game that could exist. A game that does absolutely nothing memorable, not even the courtesy of doing something laughably bad. great review btw, get well soon
A lot of OT's good press and critical praise is due to circumstances. People have been starving for a New Vegas-esque RPG for years, and Outer World's announcement came at the height of Fallout 76's controversy, which is what really got the hype machine going. I think a lot of people (myself included) were partially motivated to praise OT out of a desire to stick it Bethesda and their bullshit, as well.
I played it when it came out and put 48hrs into it and thought it was decent. I have yet to really have the motivation that is stronger than the want to play it again, thus I haven't. I also never looked at the reviews and I figured it would have gotten a 6/10 or so. Its a game I would recommend to people to keep Obsidian funded(now owned by Microsoft), but if they didn't have any particular interest in the company behind the game, I'd tell them to get it on sale. Its a worthwhile game for entertainment, but I wouldn't go looking for a life changing or lasting experience from it. I'll add that, instantly when I got done with the game my brother asked me what I thought about it. My response was that I can see and feel the Obsidian in it, but that it wasn't entirely full filling. I also recommended that he play it on the hardest difficulty as mentioned in this video, even hard was closer to a normal, and I played it on either hard or the hardest difficulty.
@@lordmoncef5494 I don't know, vanilla wise, I'd say Fallout 4 and TOW are pretty close. Fallout 4 took longer to finish though for less pay off in the end but a little bit more in-between than TOW. Modded Fallout 4 is better simply for the fact that it's moddable, and in my mind that's the biggest redeeming feature. I've also put 686 hours into Fallout 4, I'm pretty sure that as soon as I beat the base game I was already doing what little modding was available after I put, I think, 60 hrs into the game.
Framing Outer Worlds as being from "the people" that brought us Fallout NV is almost as much a lie as the entirety of Fallout 76. It might be the same company but most of the people behind New Vegas are either retired or working for a different company. This is obvious when you look at the writing. NV gave us an explanation of Hegelian dialectics while OW gave us Rick and Morty characters saying "capitalism am bad"
Couldn't agree more. There's so much potential for an anarchist faction but all there was in the iconoclasts storyline was one little standoff between them and msi and a few side missions. The original writers of new Vegas would never let potential like that go to waste
They have to do it while he's awake, the world doesn't exist while he's sleeping. No but seriously props to this guy for making it through, either I would have shattered my teeth or bit off my tongue.

And here you are with your awesome video essays even though have wave runner disease. Good on you for not dying, and thanks for the distraction. I forgot where I was going with this. Back to the video.
Finally I found someone who shared my love for tyranny. For the rpg world desperately demanding meaningful choices, the game wasn't really appreciated that much, which leads me to the conclusion, that the rpg world is smaller than many love to claim. Disco Elysium is a similar masterpiece. I wish we had more games like those 2.
indeed, disco elysium has supported my first 40 hours of just redoing the first day with different builds, doing different events in different orders, what a fucking gem
Tyranny is so great. My first playthrough I pushed this dude down from a tall tower, because that was how I saw my character at the time behaving. On another playthrough I spared the dude, and realized that you could keep him as a companion, with a ton of dialogue and stuff that I had no idea about despite already finishing the game. Tyranny is that rare kind of game that encourages and rewards actual role-playing.
@paytoncntrll7 fair, the combat wasnt great for me as well (but I put up with it for story) idk if you can find a way to cheat in stats or items or in combat, some will say that devalues the game, but if you just want to enjoy the story, then maybe this is a way to push past the combat to get to it (cheat as little or much as you want/need to experience the story, some assholes will judge, I wont)
I've played Tyranny a bit before, and kinda enjoyed it, but there are plenty of reviews stating how the story gets weaker later and it has a terrible final act or something, so I decided not to play it because I don't want to invest so much time into a deep RPG and world only to be bummed out in the end. Was it really that bad?
@@LOKITYZ I thought the final act of the game was perfect. It's hard to explain why without spoilers but basically you finally get to reap the rewards of everything you have done in the game up to that point to fill those favor meters. The results is achieving something you probably didn't even think was possible when entering the game world for the first time.
@@J3f3R20n they did hire two of the guys behind fallout back for this projekt. Issue is probably money to give the game enough scope. All their other games where supported through kickstart, so they probably had finacial struggle for some time. Not trying to defend the studio or game or anything. Didn't enjoy the game myself tbh.
If F76 never existed, this game would have came and passed with barely a shrug. This was hyped because ppl mad at Bethesda, not because genuinely good game.
A lot of people aren't aware the game was not made with anywhere near a "AAA" budget that a game like Fallout 4 or similar game gets. The publisher of Outer Worlds "Private Division" focuses on what they call "mid-tier" games. Not exactly "AAA" budget but bigger than indie. Then again with that said maybe they shouldn't have charged $60 (I don't feel quite as burnt since I played through it using GamePass PC when it was $5 a month). But it does explain somethings. Lack of weapons, repeat of assets, not many enemy types etc. Thankfully though Microsoft has the rights now to the Outer worlds IP since they own Obsidian (Private Division did not keep the rights, Obisidian did). So, Microsoft could make another game in the Outer Worlds universe with a MUCH larger budget and longer dev time and make it an Xbox and Windows exclusive. I'd be surprised if they didn't. I think it's a good base to build from.
@Edward Zignot youre onto something. It’s just an idea but what if Bethesda purposely made Fallout bad to keep the attention on them and not Obsidian? And it just helped Bethesda out because the Outer Worlds was just okay. I mean competition and sabotage doesn’t seem too far fetched does it?
As I played the Outer Worlds and saw the ineptitude of the Corporations, I believed there was going to be some grand scheme of how the entire star system was nothing more than an experiment by the Corporations to see how far they can push people. It would've shown the raw power they had if they were willing to throw away an entire star system. Instead I found out that they really were that inept. The Obsidian writers really dropped the ball with this one.
I was so hyped for Outer Worlds with New Vegas being my favourite game of all time and the same developers behind this (some of them anyway). Even though I didn't expect it to be as good it just didn't click for me. Got bored with the game and never finished my first playthrough. Something about it just didn't entice me to keep going. Combat for instance just wasn't fun and didn't feel responsive. Hated how little response the game gives you when you get damaged so a lot of the time I would get hit by enemies and not even notice. I'm a big fan of stealth games and playing stealth builds in RPGs and thought the stealth mechanics in this just felt awful. With no truly silenced guns as a stealth build the only benefit you would get in combat would be one stealth critical on an enemy which might not even kill them. The most disappointing aspect in terms of character building for me was the perks. Most of them seemed so boring and didn't add any cool unique abilities to your character - especially compared to NV which had so many interesting perks.
thefreddiefaction So know what you mean. A certain indefinable something made the game utterly bland. Stopped playing soon after I got the ship into space..
@@CoverCode Haha you've got me there. Though I'd honestly say I still enjoyed the combat in NV better. NV at least had a wider variety of guns which were cool to use
thefreddiefaction that’s fair... something I find odd with FO4 is the lack of guns... like you focus much more on gun play then the story (compared to other fallouts) but there are so few guns... like what (edit... said guy play and not gun play... ups 😅😂)
Caesar's Legion is the only way to go. They are the best faction for restoring order in a decadent and dangerous wasteland. I know it may upset bleeding-hearts on how they treat people, but they do it out of a functionalist belief rather than a malicious one. Once order is restored, then freedom and liberties can emerge. Freedom without order is chaos, which does not work well for societal development.
Comic Sans As if those slavers could last long enough until they reached a semi decent society. The moment Caesar dies the Legion will most certainly go back to nothing more than raiders with a cool flag. House is the way bringing the same amount of stability and security the legion could ever muster, the technological progress after subjugating those pretend nations will restore humanity.
@@comicsans1689 You're very naive to think the legion will restore order in a meaningful way: Their lack of political structure, bureaucracy, infrastructure, technology and overall centralization over single leader (who holds together the entire organization thanks to his big mouth) will lead to a dispute between generals which will quickly escalate to a bloody civil war. Ceasar's big ass sand empire will crumble and the tribes will return to be divide and angrier than before. It's kinda ironic that Ceasar legion is more like Gengis horde, the only difference is that at leas Gengis made a good trade route. I'm italian, so I know a few things about roman empire(what CL aspires to be) , barbarians (what CL is) and divided micro-cities (what CL will become).
The game is so unbelievably "meh". Like, it's not a bad game by any means, but it's just so bland and forgettable. That I think was my biggest problem with the game, *nothing* was fleshed out enough. I never touched it again after my first playthrough and that's a rare thing for me, no matter the game
This game made me sleepy for some reason. I tried turning off the music, that didn't help, I would fall right to sleep around an hour in. Then I realized there are a TON of loading screens. I realized all the waiting for the game to load was boring me to sleep, along with all the weird colors, I just couldn't finish it.
When you said something along the lines of "the second time you play and figure out siding with one side will not cause any significant change in the outcome to warrant a second playthrough". I couldn't continue without pausing and nodding very approvingly.
I didn't even finish the game because I got so bored of it. To be honest what annoyed me most is how everything was a running joke. The whole game just felt like one big punch line, for me it just wasn't serious enough and that kind of annoyed me, the companions were dull and boring also.
i don't know about making it smaller.... it was already kind of on the smaller side with hub worlds instead of open worlds. in fact the best game level according to most reviews was the level that was acually pretty wide open
I made this complaint before and always got told "bruv you ever play fallout?" And I'm like Fallout had a story and plot of its own beyond the core theme, and even then, vault tec was actually believable as a corporation and a threat
@@Minority119 all the crazines of vault tech are part of experiments, the first vault was clearly successful in preserving humanity outside of the "never opening" thing
In The Witcher 3 after letting the evil spirit go and save the kids you do see the kids again in Marabella's School for Tots located in Novigrad. They don't recognize Geralt though. The evil spirit kept it promise.
I really wish you stopped praising Tyranny all the damn time. The game is alright at best. For me it was just an incomplete RPG, the main quest of an RPG that would have had choice HAD it been finished. And make no mistake, Tyranny was never finished, never fledged out. West of Loathing is a more complete CRPG then Tyranny will ever be.
I gotta say man this is my first video of yours, and that opening story you shared about choice was well told and haunting. It made the rest of your video even better because of the way you discussed meaningful choices in videogames and how they affect player immersion and replay value. Consider me subbed!
The game was overhyped by obsidian fanboys and Bethesda haters. But in reality that shit was just mehhhh. Wasn't purely horrible but was far from good.
I’m a victim of that hype and bought it, played it day of release. Overall after beating it, it felt linear and the exploration was meh. It felt like half of fallout 4 but the open world was broken up with different planets. The open worlds got smaller and smaller the further you progressed in the story. I beat it and haven’t picked it up sense. I think this style of RPG shooter has been done to death. Wasteland 3 looks promising.
I got bored with the gameplay after the first world, and the universe they created was so unappealing that I was happy to see the back of it. Fortunately I tried before I buyed.
@Yousef Ghaneemah Haha this garbage was made *for* millennial's. It's painfully obvious at times. The writing in Wasteland 3 is going to be the same, and inferior to Wasteland 2.
The shooting felt fine to me. It was everything else. The armor wasn't varied enough, neither were the enemies. This games version of raiders had almost no lines of dialogue or depth to them and they were just randos to shoot. And the choices were shit. Not to mention almost all of the companions are pretty boring. Lastly the leveling system sucked, and most of the perks were useless and could have easily been bonus perks for simply leveling certain skills. It was just all around boring and mediocre, with no way to really create specialized builds.
Yeah, I Ignored Pavarati. Then shot her boss in the face directly in front of her, then wore his stupid hat (which you get as a trophy) with her in my party for the rest of the game. I was extremely disappointed that exactly nothing happens as a result of playing the game like a genocidal "revolutionary" I killed every corp faction leader, yet my reputation never proceeded me. Every new corp just trusted me till the end when I murdered the leader, every single time! I liked this game, but New Vegas it is NOT. Aggressively mediocre is a good way to put it. Game never surprised me, it was more "Meh, still better than F4."
Well, they did try to tell us it wasn't New Vegas 2, from the beginning. They said it wasn't a fully open world game, they said it was a much more linear game. And because of this, because I knew this wasn't a super million billion production, I had a very enjoyable time with the game. I thought I wouldn't like it very much at first, but once it opened up I warmed to it real quick. Although, I will say I did pay exactly one buck to play it lol so that probably helped. But I did really enjoy it, I would've bought it for 30.
New Vegas is a fantastic game, so when I heard that its developers were working on a space-travel science fiction RPG, I was stoked. That's my absolute favorite setting for a deep RPG. And then I saw the trailer, and all my hype vanished like snow before a Russian jet engine. Comedy is very hard to pull off, especially in video games, and every joke fell flat. The setting looked like some Fallout stylisms shotgunned onto a topic where they have no real place. I mean, Fallout's aesthetic works because it lampoons 50's optimism and nuclear brinkmanship. A 50's aesthetic and the threat of nuclear war also is a natural combination for most of the audience. It's like peanut butter and jelly. Outer Worlds' aesthetic is like something deciding they really like peanut butter, so it'd go great with corned beef. That's the sort of food you'll thankfully shovel down if you're sitting in a trench in Flanders and your other choices are rat meat and potatoes, but it's poor fare if you know what steak tastes like. In the end a lot of the hype for this game came from people beating the dead Fallout 76 horse. Most videos I've seen that suck this game's Skorpion suppressor are very clear that they're really just interested in taking a dump on Bethesda. And can we just take a moment to realize how supremely ironic it is for a game that tries to lampoon brand loyalty to have fans so invested in being corporate soldiers? I'm just glad I'm a cynical piece of shit and had no hope for this since the first trailer. Every time I've seen someone play this it looks like a bland product that just ticks all the boxes with the minimum of effort so it can appeal to people who want a "real RPG" but aren't hardcore enough to play Underrail or Tyranny or literally any other game that isn't an FPS with stats. Also, good luck with the health issues. That's some tough shit, man.
Bro I remember having my apendix removed and I went through the exact same shit even had a tube in my stomach and these two nurses came over, counted to 3 and wrenched it out and it felt like someone pulling my guts out my stomach and I had to just lie in the hospital bed for about 10 minutes just to compose myself from having a breakdown over that awful experience
@@ebdonaldson yeah it was the drainage for the puss left in the area after they removed the appendix. At first I thought “oh it will just smoothly slide out but the nurses were just like “we’re gonna count from three” and from that I gathered it wasn’t gonna be fun. Then they wrenched it out and I thought I’d lost half my stomach along with it. They didn’t lie about it for me but they certainly didn’t warn me either and I’m not sure which is worse in all honesty.
100% agree. When this game came out everyone praised it to high heaven... But it's just meh after a while. I think you hit the nail exactly on the head by pointing out the shallowness of the factions and how easy the combat is that bypassing it with a skill is never necessary so you don't feel rewarded if you do it. Tyranny is a great game. I hope they do another one.
Finished this game last night. What a cakewalk, filled with things that are impossible to care about. I was skipping through the post-game story bits because honest to god I couldn't even remember half the people mentioned. The Outer Worlds needed a serious, fundamental balancing pass and some significant rewrites to its story content. It's too ironic and too easy to give a single half a holler about, and it makes me really sad because it's also gorgeous to look at and plays well from a base level.
I'm going to make a contradictory statement. It's not grindy, but it has all the elements of grind. This is because repeating encounters isn't necessary to meet the max level, but every battle feels the same and there is little variation between fights other than whrre it is happening. Even then there is little to no verticallity, maneuverability or challenge.
Damn my guy, sorry to hear about your issues that's really rough. I was in ICU for 8 days from almost dying with appendicitis, waking up crying and writhing in pain with tubes sticking out of me and a tube down my throat as well, then blacking out from pain. Was really crazy hearing of your experience being almost the same
I remember I bought Outer Worlds after I absolutely loved New Vegas, and saw the phenomenal reviews along with really wanting it to be good because of fallout 76....but boy did I find it fucking boring lol played for around 6 hours and haven't touched it since.
I have over 700 hours on 76, EVEN THAT had more morally grey and consequence choices following the wastelanders DLC. I remember there's a part where someone you are with gets stuck in a room. You can cheer him on to hack the terminal or simply just discuss another way out. Cheering him on actually ends up getting him killed and you lose rewards from it. Same with how you treat one character as well. If your neutral, overly nice, or an asshole you may or may not get to get an awesome power armor set plus weapon. Basically Fallout 76 (even if it took a year) had better hard hitting choices and consequence than the outer worlds. Damn.
@@mrplayfulshade but is there any indication that this would happen?, like the guy telling you he is bad at hacking, if not I think it would come off as really random and as you would rather use a guide
Tying in the introduction’s emphasis on choice (your choice to have the surgery) to the major theme of choices in Outer Worlds was pretty clever. Cheers, hope you get better soon!
The Outer Worlds was never supposed to be a big-budget triple-A game. It's good for what it is and a lot of fun while it lasts, but if you go into it expecting an RPG with quest design and storytelling on the level of Fallout, Fallout 2 or Fallout: New Vegas, you're going to be let down.
You are small-brained. The outer world's was made by the people who made new Vegas but this time without Bethesda breathing down their necks. Don't give me this bullshit kid you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Nobody is complaining about the budget. It's about the design choices. Did you even watch the video? Go use that pseudo-intelligence and pseudo-positivity somewhere else.
So if we expect the devs of new Vegas to make another good game were gonna be let down? Try thinking dude honestly people like you piss me off so much lately you have a brain for a reason so when somebody challenges an opinion you have next time maybe think about what they're saying rather than mindlessly disregarding everything that doesn't line up with your "I had fun so good game!" Mindset. Like what are you even saying? You honestly commented that and thought it was a good comment? Unbelievable man this is embarrassing if I were you I'd delete this comment for so many reasons it makes you look like an absolute fool.
@@David-zq8sk The majority of people that made New Vegas no longer work there. Seriously you think all the people at a studio from nearly 10 years ago are at the same place?
What DM 's have you been playing 5e with? My players die or nearly die all the time. If you're facerolling through encounters, the Dungeon Master is doing it wrong.
Issue with 5e is that they removed most of the tactical elements that were present in previous editions. Flanking, combat maneuvers, a wide array of combat feats, different types of AC - all of these features are either gone or replaced with lackluster optional rules. The worst design choice was the nearly complete removal of floating bonuses. Playing the puzzle of stacking buffs and debuffs is no longer a thing. Now you only have unstackable advantage and disadvantage. This of course leads to retarded situations where two blind people can have a perfectly normal fight without any advantages or disadvantages. So when designing encounters for 5e, the difficulty of the encounter always stems from the monster having high HP, high damage and high AC. Where before you could, for example, entangle a high dex enemy to dramatically lower his AC, now you can only give them disadvantage and give yourself advantage. The tactical elements of combat have been gutted, leaving players with only the options to either hit thing with thing or cast a spell.
@@Karyuuful That's not an issue that's a feature of that edition. It is simple and basic, it is like many main characters from numerous video. It is a cardboard cutout, a toolbox for you to create with. It's as complex as the group you are with playing with wants it to be.
but to archive that you have the homebrew a bunch and ignore most of the stuff the core rules offer you the healing system alone is so absurdly retarded if you use the normal one and simply magically get full hp after a few hours of sleep
@@peddazz2365 That is exactly why 5e sucks. 3.5/pathfinder = yeah here's what we suggest for rules feel free to pick and choose what you like 5e - here's a very basic cookie cutter system. If you want more complexity go design it yourself
I find 5e easier as a DM to run. I have been running a campaign for 4 years with only 1 PC death, but i also have 8 players and I'm afraid of dumping a massive CR encounter against them in case things get "swingy". In my one shots i have killed a fair few players and I mostly play with only official content.
I stopped caring about any of the characters just a few hours in and went full murder hobo on an entire town of people because I utterly could not be bothered listen to them. The perks were shit too.
I enjoyed playing Outer Worlds but have had no desire for second playthrough. That speaks volumes in itself since I have replayed so many of my old games in order to experience whatever it was I enjoyed about it. As I recall the main issue that I had with OW was that it wasn't really a sandbox game. In much of the playing area, the routes cause the player to be coralled inwards by mountains and rivers etc. Whereas FONV is a true sandbox game. You can go anywhere from anywhere else, by any route that you like.
Which is interesting because the sandbox aspect was purely a Bethesda thing but they ruined Fallout lol ok. It's almost like the average New Vegas fanboy doesn't know why they like it.
@@wisemankugelmemicus1701 Oh I know why I liked it. The ability to roam anywhere and have random encounters which may well trigger a new insight into Fallout lore. That is the fun of FA. In Outer Worlds, you are forever on a mission. A direct route to your next objective. There seems little point in random exploration.
I was excited for this game before it was even called The outer worlds just knowing the creator of Fallout was involved but after playing i feel like his involvement was minimal.

@@glopsnopper3806 the first planet really shouldn't last a couple of hours. 1 and a half at most really the game isn't amazing, but leaving after the first planet doesn't give you a good enough opinion of the game. You can only really judge the game once you finish the tutorial
@joceja23 most of the game was pretty boring I can't deny that, it felt very empty. The planet with the iconoclast was the only interesting planet for me. All I'm saying is that you can't really judge an entire game from the tutorial alone. Imagine judging elder scrolls oblivion from the prison escape alone.
Tbh I stopped playing this game when I got to the 2nd planet and saw that is was just more of the same, a small map that could be full of interesting things, but isn't. I wonder how well the game would have done without the Bethesda screw ups and the name recognition from New Vegas. Thankfully we have actually great RPGs, my favourite being Divinity OS2.
How the fuck did Bethesda fuck up Outerworld just by existing. How desperate do you people want to believe a game must be good and the company behind the game are great perfect game developer. Holy shit.

And the people who made new Vegas made this game. Not the person who wrote the story the. Next time read correctly... also Bethesda is shit now bro.
@@applenewmoon4402 oh no I read it correctly alright. F76 is bad so they overhype Outerworld so they can say f76 and Bethesda is bad at the same time. That still doesn't make any fucking sense. The game is still bad even without f76 indirect influence and will always be a disappointed average game even without the hype. Really without the hype the game would just make less sale. Even less sale if no one connect Outerworld with NV. Because that's the only reason the price went soar, surprising the developer.
Simple answer: the game was made by the same company that made New Vegas, not the same writers and lead designer. Employees move on.
That's not entirely true, the project was lead by people that worked the original fallout games and many other rpg classics
My point was that anyone expecting this game to be like New Vegas might want to consider that the main people creating the two games were completely different.
Good point. This is how I see a potential half life 3. The writers are gone so unless they get the gang back together it won't be hl2:ep.3.

Every video about an RPG will eventually devolve into discussing Fallout: New Vegas
It's the unofficial RPG benchmark

Funny how you can do a very similar thing in New Vegas
They don’t believe in you’re a ghost in NV tho

NeverKnowsBest’s video was not great. He was so busy nitpicking that he missed the broader picture.

I feel like they put all of their hatred for Bethesda into this game and I honestly can't blame them with how completely fucked they got.
Yeah. Sucks fallout 4 wasn't really an RPG but viewing it not as one? It's pretty good
But that's the whole point, when you do a Fallout or Elder Scrolls Games, people will be expecting an RPG, not any RPG, a good RPG.

Sub surface scattering but it seems canned in this game.

YES might be true, but they can't attack and the spell is like this for ROLEPLAY reasons. as was it in 2nd edition! where mages were even less powerfull low level, had to get more xp to level ( yes classes level up at different xp amounts ) .
for me this was the first time I really saw what was happening, this in combination in videogames was the hype of get everything in 3d. even though baldur's gate 2 was 7 miles ahead of neverwinter nights. most people think neverwinter nights was the best game ever made, it wasn't it was pretty decent though, but now it's revered as one of the best games ever. same with dragon age. which was a mediocre game, but at least it was a roleplaying game, 2 sucked balls. but now after so many years of mediocrity these games are getting praise because they are the last of their kind ( same goes for vampire the masquerade bloodlines )
The dilution of RPG games is one of the worst things ever done, you can also blame steam for that. categorizing everything as an RPG. people saying diablo is an RPG. no it's not let's call it what the developers called it when it came out : a hack and slash ! you hack and slash, get loot repeat ! great game. never was an RPG though, they knew it and that's why it was called that. now these games are called an Action RPG because leveling equals RPG ? no it doesn't. the line crossed for me when Payday2 was dignified with a RPG status, it's not a bad game , had a lot of fun with it, but an RPG because you roleplay as a bankrobber? you always roleplay as something/someone in a game. you always have an avatar. my standard retort to this kind of IQ-less mindsets is, if 'payday 2' is an RPG because you roleplay a bankrobber ! than 'thomas was alone' is an RPG because you ROLEPLAY a f*cking rectangle!

@kinsmarts Agreed.
Still better than fallout 4 n 76

If F76 never existed, this game would have came and passed with barely a shrug. This was hyped because ppl mad at Bethesda, not because genuinely good game.
Unfortunately true
@@sean8102 if they make it Xbox exclusive I ain't buying shit I hate Xbox controllers been PS for life
@Edward Zignot youre onto something.

There isn't as much stuff to do with Caesar's Legion unfortunately
Mod it with caesars legion quests expanded

@@comicsans1689 You're very naive to think the legion will restore order in a meaningful way: Their lack of political structure, bureaucracy, infrastructure, technology and overall centralization over single leader (who holds together the entire organization thanks to his big mouth) will lead to a dispute between generals which will quickly escalate to a bloody civil war.

Shooting is crap. Side characters are boring as hell. World is colorful but......it just didn't feel right. I still can't put my finger on it.

@@RaccoonBrigade "as good as F4" those words together in a sentence should not be physically possible

@Jordan Ghill not really

The Outer Worlds needed a serious, fundamental balancing pass and some significant rewrites to its story content. It's too ironic and too easy to give a single half a holler about, and it makes me really sad because it's also gorgeous to look at and plays well from a base level.

It is. 1993 Doom's gunplay is way more fun than this.
Jesús Molina tbh despite its simplicity the original doom still holds up pretty well more compared to a lot of modern games xD

It's as complex as the group you are with playing with wants it to be.
but to archive that you have the homebrew a bunch and ignore most of the stuff the core rules offer you
the healing system alone is so absurdly retarded if you use the normal one and simply magically get full hp after a few hours of sleep
@@peddazz2365 That is exactly why 5e sucks.
3.5/pathfinder = yeah here's what we suggest for rules feel free to pick and choose what you like
5e - here's a very basic cookie cutter system.
6 hours of discovery, then 13 hours of rampage. I'm surprised I finished it.
@@wisemankugelmemicus1701 well, you tried.
Describing the feeling of getting those tubes pulled out has made me disturbingly aware of my own internal organs
I was excited for this game before it was even called The outer worlds just knowing the creator of Fallout was involved but after playing i feel like his involvement was minimal.
Or too much
You should be worry as soon as they use New Vegas to promoting their game after Black Isle crew left after New Vegas
Well, the people who worked on the first 2 fallouts and NV actually left the company long before this game released.

As soon as i booted up The Outer Worlds and saw that everyone had the same face, just a little bit different from eachother like skyrim i immediately dropped it. Nothing breaks immersion more than doing a quest where 3 npcs have the exact same face shape, hair and voice.
lol that's stupid. Some of you people are not gamers, you're critics.
The Outer Worlds was consistently underwhelming and disappointing.
Totally agree. All reviewers were so over rating it because they were all obsessed with putting Bethesda is their place. Granted, Bethesda is shit now, but it doesn’t make other RPGs better by de facto. It’s dishonest.

Sadly, I came in hoping itll be great but it just... wasn't that good. Barely got past edge water.

Never even got off the first planet, the game was just so unappealing.

@@glopsnopper3806 the first planet really shouldn't last a couple of hours. 1 and a half at most really the game isn't amazing, but leaving after the first planet doesn't give you a good enough opinion of the game. You can only really judge the game once you finish the tutorial
@@glopsnopper3806 the same goes for any other game really
And Pillars 2
How the fuck did Bethesda fuck up Outerworld just by existing. How desperate do you people want to believe a game must be good and the company behind the game are great perfect game developer.
Holy shit.
Lord Hobo Of Savior you didn’t read it correctly. He means if fallout 76 wasn’t a mess (that caused people to resent and dislike Bethesda, even to this day a lot of people are still resenting them and are now rolling their eyes at them) and over Hype this game and calling it the new series that will end Bethesda. And the people who made new Vegas made this game. Not the person who wrote the story the.
Next time read correctly... also Bethesda is shit now bro.
@@applenewmoon4402 they fire their lead writer Emil Pagliarulo after Fallout 76 and Fallout 4 lackluster story. Lets see what happen in Starfield
