Man I really appreciate your videos. I don’t want to sound like a hater bc I’m all for a man to make his money but a few years back I followed a couple of UA-camrs lawn care plan. These UA-camrs are sponsored by big name fertilizer companies. Each year I would spend a couple thousand of dollars in buying all of these products that they would advertise. All it did, was stress my ass out. with all the products I was throwing down, I had to mow every day or every other day. Those UA-camrs lived in an average house like you and I, hell now they are buying farms, big houses, beach houses ect. I started following your channel and I can say that today my lawn looks the best it ever has. I mow every three days and it has become the best yard in the whole neighborhood. I really appreciate it.
🙏🙏 Thank you very much. I really appreciate this. UA-cam lawn care has gotten out of control in some areas. More power to those people, but I can't say I'm a fan of pushing things people don't need in the name of money. I think more and more people are starting to figure it out. Your support is much appreciated.
I’ve been mowing 3 times per week, have scalped and done height of cut reset but seem to be losing color fast. Hager fertilized as well. Double cutting seems to make it look more dull and just had blades sharpened last week. Bermuda, any suggestions?
Hmmm. Depends on what your level of dark expectations are. I'm mowing every 4 days, double cutting and haven't fertilized in a month. Yes, it loses color every time I cut it, but I'm okay with that. Doesn't bother me anymore. I'm not looking for super dark green. I'm more concerned with few weeds and it just being thick. If it's dark green you're looking for, may be time to switch to a reel mower if you haven't already. Much cleaner cut that way. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Exactly. I didn't do my first soil test for at least 4 or 5 years into the hobby. I'm glad I waited that long because it allowed me to focus on the cultural practices and preventative steps needed for a good looking lawn.
👍👍I like your style. Sure, a soil test may be beneficial, but it doesn't mean squat if you don't get the cultural practices down first. Appreciate ya man!

Thank you for a really helpful video. After 60 years of NOT doing what you recommend I will change my way of looking after my lawns. Better late than never.
Just found your channel tonight and have watched over 2 hours of your content, I’m hooked!! Haha can you elaborate a bit more on “mulching” your clippings? I may be way off but it sounds like just mowing and blowing the clippings back into the lawn? I have a regular rotary mower, do I need different equipment for “mulching” my clippings?
Haha, awesome. Thank you. Mulching simply means the mower cuts the grass blades very finely to where they're not left in big pieces all over the lawn. Your lawn mower needs to be a mulching mower. Most are these days. You may need to do some research just to double check. Hope this helps. Thanks again. Glad to have ya here on the channel.

I was gonna fertilize last year... But I just kept mowing and mowing and mowing. I did a tiny bit of spot spraying for weeds, and I literally had the best yard on the block. Amazing how much proper mowing and a little edging can do in a year.
Good points, brother. I enjoyed that. However, I am a St. Augustine enthusiast and my grass likes to be mowed at 3 inches about once a week. It also enjoys "strutting it stuff" at 3 1/2 inches, and really looks good at 4 inches. So, I can sit back and relax and give the lawnmower a rest. By the way, I have nearly 3 acres to mow. I do not use any chemicals on the lawn. No pre emergent, no post emergent, no chemical fertilizers. I spread a little compost on it in February, and throw down some organic lawn food during the Spring - and the grass loves it, and overgrows and chokes out most of the weeds during the summer. It took me nearly 50 years to learn "the best way to have a nice lawn". I enjoy the "once per week" mow, and will sometimes let it go a little longer. It is probably the prettiest lawn in the neighborhood.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE INPUT AND I WILL TRY TO MOW 2X A WEEK. I have a very small yard but I do care about it. Right now, the temperature in Tn ( March 7) warmer and mostly the grass here is Tall Fescue which I'm not familiar. I used to have a Zoysia grass in my former house and never had a problems with weeds but I thought about putting weed and feed by Scotts on my yard this Spring because I got too many clover this month. I never tried this product before but as of now just worried about having clover in my yard. Once again, THANK YOU! YOU MADE ME SMILED THE WHOLE TIME I WAS WATCHING YOUR VIDEO! YOU'RE VERY FUNNY!
Depends on which southern grass. St. Augustine likes to be up around 4 inches, while I like my bermuda around an inch. Zoysia grass around 1.5. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
I get so dizzy spraying liquid weed be gone like from a garden hose attachment and hand sprayers. I think using granular is a much healthiest alternative. The granulara just sits on the lawn until you water it in and ao you can't smell it. I hope you can address this issue. I use mostly all granular now instead of liquid sprays (unless im spot spraying round up for weeds on my rock landscape).

So when it comes to mowing properly.. I almost always bag my clippings because I like the clean look at lower cut sub 1 inch. . I do believe that mulching clippings when mowing often is a good thing however 90% of people don't mow often enough. I would say if your mowing frequency is only once a week or longer your better off bagging. Nothing worse than seeing clumps of grass in your turf. I will agree that if those that desire to have a beautiful lawn mowing is by far must. The more you mow the better the lawn. Get that down and then commit to watering. I have wasted many years, hours and money throwing the kitchen sink at the lawn before realizing that it starts with mowing. I get people all the time asking me how I do it, I have learned to not get long winded anymore. I ask how often do you mow? I tell them to double it then see me for next step. Never see them again.

another way to look at this is that you could do all those other things(fert, water, weeds, etc.) and still, if you aren't mowing often enough at a well maintained height of cut with a sharp blade, your lawn will not grow and look good .... *so really nothing else matters as much* - and today now with affordable high performing rechargeable battery eTools(cost is greatly reduced when many tools in a product line can share the same expensive battery) mowing becomes much easier when you don't have the problematic steps of going out to buy fuel, have starting issues, plus do extra maintenance and storage that old fashioned lawn mowers require before you can do the job - this allows me to mow almost every day; as one day I'll do the back yard, the next the front yard, another day do the sides and other areas, then repeat the cycle before any grass is looking bad( *if you wait till your lawn looks bad before you mow it, you have waited too long* ) and with an eMower the whole process might only take 15~20min a day
I went super basic. I skipped the soil test and even buying a mower, and went straight to lawn leveling. My lawn should look awesomely flat this year! ps. I keep thinking that’s a Yard Mastery hat you’re wearing. Surely Travis didn’t turn on us?!?!? 😂

Good on you for not recommending fertilizing, always a little bothered when people recommend fertilizing. Fertilizing should only be done for the diehards. Why fertilize and push the grass to grow if you don't plan on mowing 3+ times a week and watering when needed? Having a nice green hay field isn't something I'd aspire to. If you don't plan on tracking water, then fertilizing can just burn out the grass, feed it to grow then not giving the proper water is just a disaster, usually not an issue in the wet spring, but in summer time you're asking for trouble. And if you're not going to do any weed management, you're just going to have bigger dandelions and crabgrass than the neighbors. If you like mowing the grass as often as you can, take care of the watering if nature doesn't, and you maintain your weeds, then it's time to get into fertilizers, otherwise you're just making everything harder on yourself.
The single tip the entire lawn care community needs is to stop applying synthetic chemicals to your lawn and just use biology and vermicompost etc. compost all your stuff and feed it to your lawn. I was into lawn care for three years and it honestly is the biggest money pit and terrible for the environment. As soon as you start actually learning about gardening you see how toxic the whole lawn thing really is lol… death to monocrops

I was into lawn care for three years and it honestly is the biggest money pit and terrible for the environment. As soon as you start actually learning about gardening you see how toxic the whole lawn thing really is lol… death to monocrops
