There are varying opinions on the stats for the bow.
    ※矢の飛距離については諸説あります

      @saldiven2009 2 місяці тому +1

TLDR: The stats on the bow mentioned in the video aren't that much different than the English longbow being used during the same era.
The draw weight mentioned in the video isn't crazy.
For example, there were original 16th century English longbow staves that were recovered in the wreck of the Mary Rose that had been sunk deep in mud in a harbor, preserving the wood. Over 170 of these bows were recovered, and historians were able to examine them to determine how they were crafted and get accurate ideas of their size and strength. From this research, it was determined that of the staves recovered, the draw weights (at 30 inches of draw) was between 100 lbs and 180 lbs (45-81 kg). The length of an English war bow was a little less than 2 meters when unstrung.
Regarding range, testing with Mary Rose staves put ranges (depending on the type of arrow) between 250 and 320 meters.
One thing to consider is that the Japanese bow discussed in this video has a longer drawn length than the English war bow; the English bow was typically around 30 inches, while the Japanese bow could be as much as 39 inches, with 30 inches being the bottom end. The longer the draw length, the more power the bow imparts to the arrow, allowing for greater velocity and, therefore, greater range.
By the time of the Mongol invasion of Japan, the English longbow (war bow) had been in use for about a hundred years. It's completely reasonable for another culture to have developed similar technology in another part of the world at that same rough point in time.

I'm from iki island, and my maternal family comes from Samurai clan. Mothers in my clan sing Mongolian invasion songs to babies, to pass down true info how brutally k i l l e d our islanders were. Stone walls are still partially kept to show children how far they invaded. There are multiple Shrines (Shinto) at where the mountains of corps of our people were piled up then. Even now we pray there and practice rituals to remember what happened. According to our traditions, we learn history from Jinja, Shinto shrines, cuz public schools are affected by international politics.
When you are weaker than invaders, this is what happens. I hope people around the world takes it serious to protect their boarders.

oh the hostage part is so true, in Vietnam, after the 3 mongol failed invasion in Vietnam, the Yuan dynasty (China Dynasty ruled by mongol people, same dynasty that try to invade japan), request Vietnamese's King to go to meet the Yuan King to show that they submitted so Mongol won't wage another invasion, but the Vietnam's King and the rest of the court straight up refuse it, they knew that if the king go, he won't able to comeback to vietnam and will be held as hostage. And we kinda like: If you want another invasion? come at us bro. But after 3 humiliating defeat, combine with the failed invasion of Japan, the Yuan is just like not in the mood to try again so Vietnamese just send them gold and shit so they will stfu and leave us be.

i remember something worse for mongol in southeast asia, can't remember which one.
so in one expedition, the messenger of mongol went to a king there and demanded tribute, the king got angry and mutilated the messenger's face, like cut the nose or ears or whatever, and sent him back. of course the mongol was livid and launched big invasion to destroy the king's kingdom. but after the mongol won, that kingdom's enemy attacked the mongol from behind. so the mongol lost and the surviving soldiers were basically enslaved by the new king there. after that, mongol didn't retaliate, maybe because they suffered too many losses in other areas.

I love these videos! I’ve asked my Japanese wife to get drunk and make videos with me, she said “yaranai” but she may have misunderstood the ask. I don’t think we can put blame on Japan for the first use of bio weapons. The catapult was invented around 400 BCE in Greece. The siege of Caffa is often noted as the first use of biological weapons (plague victims flung over the walls) but flinging dead animals to cause disease etc was known for long before that. They had a thousand years in Europe to figure out what strange stuff to pack in a catapult.

In case anyone was wondering about the conversion at 4:42 from Metric to Imperial, 60 kg is about 132~133lbs. English longbows have been found to have ranged from 100 to 185lbs (about 45kg to 84kg) for comparison sake. Those are extremely heavy draw weights for bows. For 4:46, the arrow is moving at 196~197 feet per second. The rough way to convert draw weight to feet per second is for every 5-10 pounds you get 10-15 feet per second. This is the very rough way to do it as there are other factors like material the bow is made from, the length of draw and what the quality of the arrow itself is.
11:28 Don't apologize for that, the west had been dipping arrows in poison, blood, manure since the B.C. era. There is even a belief that Roman soldiers would sometimes dip their swords in manure and rotting corpses to cause Tetanus and other diseases. I've even read that Hannibal of Carthage had clay pots filled with snakes that his sailors would throw onto enemy ships. I'd rather have to deal with cleaning up a dead horse than searching the ship for several clay pots full of agitated, venomous snakes.

The manga and anime Angolmois Genkou Kassenki also portrayed the Mongol invasions and the Japanese forces remaining commanded by the MC Kichii Jinzaburo did some of the things mentioned in the video vs the invading Korean, Jurchen and Mongols during the first invasion in Tsushima Island. He conducted a night raid to put fear into the Korean forces, retrieved the heads of the jito (local lord) and his son while killing the field commander of the Korean forces and managed to conduct guerilla warfare for 7 days until the Mongols sent a massive force to defeat the remaining defenders. They also tackled the decision of the Kamakura Bakufu to fortify Hakata rather than send aid to Tsushima and Iki islands.
The drama Hojo Tokimune also tackled the invasions and devoted episodes for that, one episode even showed both the Japanese and Mongol forces fighting inside Hakata.
The forging techniques that the katana is famous for had developed immensely after the invasions since the Tachi, while sharp, chips a lot and at times, gets broken due to hardened Mongol leather armor. This led to Japanese swordsmiths studying chipped and broken Tachi in order to improve on them. The end result is the Tachi post invasions is thicker and more durable than pre-invasions Tachi which then led to the katana itself as it is known.
Anyways, nice video and looking forward for more.

One thing you guys left out was that during the first invasion, the swords used by the Japanese weren't robust/strong enough to cut through the boiled leather armor worn by the Mongolians.
That led to the stronger, sharper swords we know today.

This is wrong. There are no sources supporting this claim, and Samurai sword couldn't cut samurai armor either (in fact, swords of any kind can't cut most armor, as armors are MADE to protect from sword cuts). Why would they expect to be able to cut the armor of their enemies? They didn't try to cut armor to begin with.

    60kg draw weight is impressive
thats almost an english longbow and a half
wonder if how they where used was very different
english longbow was a peasant weapon mostly, so arching volley fire was typical
but with your mounted elite carrying those weapons i wonder if you would get closer and try for strait shots
turns it into a very different weapon eventho they function mostly the same

Everything just made more sense in those simpler times. You had a win on an enemy if you have his head at your dipsosal. With the face of of a samurai with eyebrows on fleek and with subtly rouche-faded cheeks looking at you from the book shelf, you knew you were ahead .

Now imagine how ridiculous it would be if I said, "oh no my ancestors how dare you laugh at that!" (even though contextually they were laughing at it being horrible and an embarassing point of history, indirect as it may be).
That's what america is like all the time now. "I am offended from a topic ajacent to a topic I am offended by despite being generations removed".🤦‍♀️

This is why people like Tsushima even though the story is a complete fantasy and the actually lost in real life. Even though the story is fake everything else in it game wise respects the country and their culture. The thing they make fake is an event, not an entire person and it doesnt berate japanese history and people as a whole. Meanwhile on Ubisoft's end they not only disrespect everything in the gameplay environment, culture, everything, they made the entire changed based on one guy who they used as a stepping stone to suddenly blame the japanese for black enslavement which never happened in history. The japanese are more likely to kill foreigners they find or send them back out to sea than to enslave them, and then had the balls to say it was all facts. If they had just stuck to saying its fiction and respected japanese culture people would still cover one eye and leave it as is but they ignited the fury of an entire country and now are paying the price for it.

Don't worry, causing disease was a very old tactic, the Japanese didn't start it, whoever worked out how to throw things far enough did.
But yeah the Japanese of this time period were noted for being fairly hotblooded, there is lots of talk of marital arms and weapon types but the reality is that the Japanese were scary because they had a contempt for death, they would throw themselves in their enemies. This is partly because rewards were for enemy heads and fighting was a financial investment, but the culture seeped through and thus Japanese in general seemed a tad insane to outsiders.

Sengoku Basara is my fav game franchise. The all-star CVs, the action(DMC but better), the character design, and most importantly, the different dialect and manner everyone speaking are so damn cool and memorable. Unfortunately, it's been dead for nearly a decade. PS: RIP Keiji Fujiwara. Irreplaceable.
