Playing Devil's Advocate here: During the 7th console generation, there was a brief transition period into HD graphics that many Japanese studios were not prepared for. They ended up making a combination of 6th-gen-looking games on 7th-gen consoles and awkward Westernized games like MindJack, Binary Domain, Ace Combat Assault Horizon, Operation Raccoon City, Ninja Gaiden 3, Shadows of the Damned and Bionic Commando 2009 (okay the last 2 were not that bad). Star Ocean The Last Hope was especially emblematic of this period, putting highly-stylized characters into high-res environment and looking mismatched as a result. Atlus during this period was almost entirely retreating to handheld niche titles, making Trauma Center, Etrian Odyssey games and Radiant Historia, giving home consoles only Trauma games and P4 Arena. FromSoftware made its worst game ever (Ninja Blade) at the same time it made Demon's Souls. Falcom was still making bangers but you'd only know them for Ys Seven if you live outside of Japan. 6:19 nani kore! So, when you make a WW2 game, medieval game, ancient empire games, etc. then you are making educational games and that is wrong on the eyes of game industry.
I dont believe they are not making enough games because of DEI. A good game is a good game whether it has that or not. Covid slowed it down and I have not seen it pick back up. Like even with playstation creating the new consoles seem kinda slow how they used to do it back in the day before covid. Then you have games that have no wide platforms, its this platform or that platform. Its quiet sad. Really.
People saying DEI is the reason are seriously delusional and clearly know nothing about game development. This is the reason grifters will tell you is the most important because they also have no clue how things work. The main reason games from asia still have the creative juice that the rest of the world lost is because their industries are either very new to traditional AAA or AA games (like China or Korea) or that their industry didn't handle the technological transition well at all and they had a massive technological gap to close because the technology wasn't available in their language at the start. This latter situation is mainly Japan, which explains their big companies' obsession with building their own engines, which some failed miserably at like Square Enix, and others thrived in like Capcom (for different reasons). It is no coincidence that we are seeing a boom in asian games with great production value right at the time where Unreal Engine became extremely user friendly with widely available documentation in multiple languages. So, when you combine an industry that is still very new, or one that has had decades working on crappy engine forcing them to be creative instead of flashy, you get a region of the world where people are still able to take risks and be creative with new crazy ideas. In the west the issue is that video games has been too rationalised, it's "by the book" game development where very few studios still have the wiggle room to take risks because investors and publishers are breathing down their necks. In the west, creativity and fantastically creative games are mainly indie productions, because that's where risks can still be taken. But don't be naive. Asia will follow the same pattern in a couple decades when their industries catch up to the bureaucracy of financing big budget games (except maybe China because they mainly produce games for their own market and that's where 90% of their sales are, see Wukong for example)
