John J. Mearsheimer is the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science and the co-director of the Program on International Security Policy at the University of Chicago, where he has taught since 1982. He served as an officer in the U.S. military for five years before pursuing graduate studies and receiving his Ph.D. in political science from Cornell University in 1980. Between 1979 and 1999, he was a research fellow at the Brookings Institution, a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University and was the Whitney H. Shepardson Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Professor Mearsheimer has written extensively about security issues and international politics more generally. He has published five books: Conventional Deterrence (1983), which won the Edgar S. Furniss, Jr., Book Award; Liddell Hart and the Weight of History (1988); The Tragedy of Great Power Politics (2001), which won the Joseph Lepgold Book Prize and has been translated into eight different languages; The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy (with Stephen M. Walt, 2007), which made the New York Times best seller list and has been translated into twenty-one different languages; and Why Leaders Lie: The Truth about Lying in International Politics (2011), which has been translated into ten different languages. He has also written many articles that have appeared in leading academic journals and popular magazines, as well as a number of op-ed pieces for the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times dealing with topics like Bosnia, nuclear proliferation, American policy towards India, the failure of Arab-Israeli peace efforts, and the invasion of Iraq.

Everything China is today is due to the US. The thinking was if you help China they will become an ally. That works so long as the CCP is toppled. The US forgot to do that. So an outdated relic known as CCP that should have been disposed of gets a new lease of life. After 2008 the CCP thinks the US is weak and we start to see the end of the peaceful rise which was nonsense, to begin with. This is not new. The Soviets helped China also. Then they realised that Mao was a nutjob and pulled back. We get the Sino-Soviet split Where China not only challenges the Soviets for leadership of the communist world calling them fakers and making additional territorial claims in Russia's far east. This led to skirmishes and a period of high tension which is when we see Mao calling the Americans desperately for help. China under the CCP has been an international joke for a long time now. The good news is there will be no conflict because the Chinese military is actually incapable of it. Everything they say and do is just verbal threats.

You can see it with America trying to provoke China into a war by changing its prior position and recognizing Taiwan (and arming them) as a separate state.
The same thing goes with Russia (which was rising slowly and didn't agree with the current nihilistic culture of the West and wanted to preserve its Russian culture) and was provoked to war via the arming of Ukraine.

With the advent of nuclear weapons war between the nuclear powers is a threat to life on the planet. The different capitalist trading blocs want to sell their excess production to other parts of the world. The US became the master of the world not by fighting WW1 and WW2 but by holding back as long as possible before entering. Geography protected the US from war on our soil. With the ICBM that protection is gone with the wind.
This talk in 2012, the question of how Canada will act in this US-China strategic competition given that Canada benefits from trade with China is anwered in 2019 with the HuaWei incident. Basically, Canada has no choice and is not as independent as she thinks she is. The arrest of daughter of the founder of Hua Wei requested by US basically threw Canadian trade relationship with China under the bus.
A similar question continues to be posed in Australia and the answer, according to Mearsheimer, is the same - when forced into a choice between economic prosperity vs survival, the choice is clear.

Singapore is largely dominated by Chinese, if China moves in it would be more to their liking since they already post Confucius sayings in public places. Lee Kuan Yew has stated that western democracy can't work in Asia. Whether that is true or not, Chinese dominated Singapore already sees themselves as more Chinese than American.

China was the biggest economy of the world for 1800 years of the last 2000 years and it hardly went to any major war to trade . Yes it dominated its region but not by killings. While the west dominated the world by its military power and not by trade. So your assumption that a rich country will go to war to dominate other countries is a western concept and not a Chinese Confucius concept.
Bottomline, if the U.S. is willing to settle for having a regional hegemony in the Americas and in Europe then there wouldn't be any risk of conflict with China. Unfortunately, the U.S. may not be satisfied with anything less than a total global hegemony.

In the Chinese people's (han civilization) collective consciousness, china is the 'middle kingdom', with wisdom, and racial superiority, and does not intent to conqueror others by force. Look at Tang China, 674 C.E., when China was world power: the Tang established peaceful commercial connection all the way to the eastern roman empire, without trying to conqueror anyone. In fact, I wonder what your background is, because it seems as though your argument is based on only partial information. Let's just take one example for instance here, and I do admit the fact that conquest has occurred several times in china's long history, especially with the han dynasty and the tang dynasty, where the chinese imperial power held the largest territory (much larger than that of today's). When Zheng He (1405) set sail to the gulf of africa, he passed by more land than the Spanish and the portugese, and later the British on his way. There was no conquest, no raiding and no colonization to any of these territories. However, if you look at Britain and any other european powers at the time, conquest and slavery/ mercantilism was the trend, and was believed to be 'okay'. So looking at history of more recent years in human existence, you have to admit, that China does not seek to expand nor is it very violent to the outside, unless it is being invaded by others. There are exceptions, of course, but keep in mind that government decisions doesn't always represent han people's beliefs. However, if you study china's growth in the recent years, the degree of satisfaction by the majority of the population (although outliers exist), you will find that China has its own way of running things that work with its own people. On the other hand, most chinese people understands the west very well, and most educated chinese can speak english, more than japanese who can speak english.

Although we were the primary vanquisher of the Japanese empire in the second world war the Chinese contribution was not insignificant. The vast majority of Japanese soldiers were in China and were unable to deploy to the Pacific islands because they were under attack in China.

The Red Army provided the largest land force in the Allied victory in the European theatre of World War II, and its invasion of Manchuria assisted the unconditional surrender of Imperial Japan.
They would have been useless or worse in island warfare because they'd have imposed a staggering logistics burden. The Japanese merchant marine had been neglected before the war and was nearly wiped out by US submarines and air power. Adding more infantry would require food, clean water, medical support, equipment and the rest of the enormous logistics "tail" the US did well and the Imperial Japanese Navy did poorly.
China was indeed valuable to consume Japanese resources thus depriving the Pacific of valuable aircraft and other weapons, but infantry were the least important because they cannot march across oceans.

@@leonardorestrepo5196 China always wanted Taiwan even before this lecture was made similarly for the reasons why Russia wanted Ukraine. Taiwan will eventually be taken over by China, but that has nothing to do with military aggression more so naval security.

I'm an American living in Beijing. These comments disgust me and make me really sad. You should never try to convince someone their race or culture is inferior in any way. We need love in this world. I am American and I am NOT okay with war, and I do NOT waste my time judging my fellow human beings. I love Chinese because they are humans. I love my people because they are humans. I would never try to convince anyone they are worse than me because I'd be diluting myself and harming another persons emotional body.

I don't understand why folks are angry over this wonderful talk. It reminds me of the best Chinese Sci-fi sofar, the Three Body Problem. Who is angry?
His theory matches reality much less than he claims. The US in the past 100 years has actually tended to side with its nearest peer competitors. First that was the UK and now it is EU. The US policy toward USSR was not containment of power; the EU had a much bigger economy when it was founded. It was based on the dominant ideology evolving into "social democracy", an interpretation of communism competing with bolshevism. China and Russia are both dwarfed by the European Union in power, yet the US war hawks express zero concern about this. Why? Because Europe is a collective of mega-welfare states that promote "social democracy". The US is now controlled by that ideology, so they want to overthrow Putin and install Navalny or another EU stooge. Navalny's platform is to make the EU even more powerful than it already is by converting Russia into a typical EU welfare state and essentially becoming an EU member. So current US foreign policy is closer to the opposite of what Mearsheimer claims: to create an external entity, EU, that is more powerful than itself, based on ideology.

The best way to avoid a potential clash between China and US is for US to pull out from the Asia Pacific Region. It's apparent to me that it's not China's rise that will threaten global peace rather it's American aggression that puts world peace at risk. American people should ask a simple question - what is the legitimacy for America to maintain an overwhelmingly powerful military presence in the Asia Pacific Region? If there is no case for America to stay in the Asia Pacific Region, why raise alarm on China's rise or even question China's rise? If China has never offended US in any way in the past, why should US be concerned about China's rise? The underlying reason of America's fear of any potential challenge from China is its own aggressiveness. America has what I call a bully mentality. A bully is very spiteful and easily annoyed by anyone who does not kiss up to him. Yet a bully is also mentally fragile and constantly paranoid with suspicion that someday someone will challenge him. America like a chronic bully is suffering from schizophrenia and manic depression. Before America can do any serious harm to any peaceful countries, we must put America in a psychiatric ward for urgent treatment.
