I may be wrong but 8min in, John & Kishore have already demonstrated the key differences between western and eastern thinking. Kishore put this very succinctly - back when China was the absolute dominating force in the world, it had no motivation to control/colonize other regions the way the western nations did. It is simply not the dominating thought in the Chinese mindset to control others unless it feels threatened and do so out of self defense. John on the other hand, "China would be crazy to not dominate Asia the way U.S. has dominated the western hemisphere..." case in point. Please don't project your bias/inclinations onto the eastern mind.
yup. China had enough trouble keeping it together and the lands w/ best lands were within China (before the use of oil, industrial revolution, etc). Anywhere they might go was either rocks, tundra, jungle, desert, etc. John Mearsheimer needs to respond to this point. Although, the Manchu expansion into Tibet could be considered hegemony, don't think they understood control of water sources back then. However, he does have a point (maybe from another vid, get them mixed up now) that intentions don't matter; a hegemon such as the US needs to be wary of capabilities because you never know what kinda nutjob could come in power some day (as happened in Germany a couple times).
Yes, it is surprised to hear that from John, he still have the mindset that China want to conquer or dominate the world like the West. and the example of he mentioned US won over Germany, Nazi, Japan, Soviet Union, all those 4 power is crazy for power. But China isnt going that way, China is totally different kind of competitor that US has never met.

Kishore speaks with humility whereas John subscribes himself to a flawed view of the international political scene from the American point of view. Let us not forgot that Russian leaders have adamantly opposed NATO enlargement in Europe especially Ukraine and the US role in the Middle East has always expanded now in the South China Sea. John is more on offensive realism which seeks power and influence to achieve security through domination and hegemony. That is why he favours containment.

John Wayne I think Kishore has theoretical brilliance in rationalizing & producing solutions to potential conflicts. But, I believe, he is so dazzled by China's exponential rise , that he has overlooked or has not understood CCP'S strategic aims to conquer & dominate the world without firing a shot . As we all know by now, the CCP'S has repeatedly used a devious means to achieve its strategic objective: viz. debt- trap for financial colonisation of weak nations in Africa, Asia, Latin Anerica, etc. What Kishore also seems to ignore is China is regularly using its financial & military firepower to bully etc and dictate terms to weaker nations for trade & infrastructure deals ....these nations, being dependent on China's domination of the global supply chain, often end up surrendering their strategic land or their key infrastructure assets. This is economic & financial colonialism imposed by China by devious backdoor methods. .....If Kishore finds this colonisation of the world by China " without firing a shot" a " rationale " way to avoid US intervention & loss of influence in countries of strategic & security interest to USA, then , certainly , China has avoided a potential conflict with US in the SHORT TERM ONLY. Sooner or later , US will wake up & challenge China aggressively when its long term interests are threatened by China's ( debt trap ) back door colonisation of the world . Hence, Kishore's " pragmatism " to avoid potential conflict between China & US has NO LONG TERM validity. 4.9.20

Why does John think they need to become a regional hegemony? His view of things is so tainted by hawkish American biases. China has played its game the same for 30 years. Use their huge labor base to outsource all if America's productive capacity to them, use that to fuel GDP growth, which they then turn around and use to build infrastructure for their own people, thereby raising a generation of incredibly smart people who bolster their enormous tech and engineering sector. Because of that, they now are not reliant on US capital to pursue projects, allowing them to use surplus' they have to give money to other nations disillusioned with America. Now they have built ports, rail, roads, and all this crucial economic infrastructure while America privatized every social security net they had, resulting in a generation of Americans disenfranchised from their own nation, and because of a lack of investment in public education, the people of America are pretty dumb to be honest. Now the board is set as China has many positive relations with foreign countries, as well as the infrastructure and currency to defeat the USA without firing a shot. They need only get more than half the world to switch to their currency, isolate America financially, and squeeze the west with in fighting as western nations decide whether to stay with American dollars and trade routes, or side with China. America put all of its cards into conventional weapons of war EVEN AFTER THEY INVENTED the device that made conventional war impossible between any nation that has it. The US isn't going to lose. They already have and now we are just waiting here to see if they proverbially flip the table and kill us all if they can't have their manifest destiny.

People still view America favourably in relation to China, it's just favourable viewpoints decreased steadily for both countries. And on the point of "everyone kicks and puts down America," first off, people still view China unfavourably in relation to America, so China still is dealing with the brunt of poor reputation; secondly, this is the natural consequence of all superpowers: scepticism and poor reputation as an abuser of power as well as an opportunist are natural occurrences for all hegemonic powers; thirdly, as Australians, we should be noting the fact that our trade was essentially taken from us; are you suggesting that we should remain quiet and just accept. "Oh it's free trade, that's what we should expect." We can't do anything against America but at least we should be realistic about international affairs at least for the sake of making decisions as a democracy to garner choices that would serve us, not for other countries. A problematic issue I see with John's argument in this interview is his stance on Taiwan/West relations vs Ukraine/West relations. When discussing Ukraine, John believes the best way to have avoided the current crisis is for Ukraine to have either remained neutral or went pro-Russia since it's neighbors with Russia. However, when discussing Taiwan, he believes it's best for Taiwan to side with the West, despite China being its neighbor. I wonder why the stance is different. I'm guessing it's because John theorizes that Russia would have been OK if Ukraine was just economically friendly with West and not associated with NATO. This is also assuming Russia wouldn't have invaded Ukraine on the basis of the civil war in the east. But what of Taiwan? Would China have been OK with Taiwan if it was only pro-West economically and didn't have a military relationship with the US?
first thing that would happen is Taiwan became independent is that they will ask the U.S to setup a military base there with Nuclear missile ready. This would be an existential threat. And the Chinese will not let that happen
@@StrongbyLee US wouldn't let that happen, because it is much more valuable for Taiwan to continue to remain as a conflict or bargaining chip. Then you might understand why US would prefer Taiwan issue to be a loose end.
Mearsheimer is a realist. He sees the world the way it is, not the way we may wish it to be. Staying neutral would have been a viable strategy for Ukraine vis a vis Russia. Finland has done it, same with Sweden. Ukraine was fine staying neutral until 2014. In Taiwan’s case, neutrality is simply not on the table. It’s not a matter of whether Taiwan is aligned with the west or not. Even if it wasn’t, China would want it back. China simply believes Taiwan is theirs. And of course the island holds enormous geostrategic value. Neutrality has never been an option the way it was with the Ukraine.
@@mensrea1251 I agree. I guess after the dissolution of the USSR, Ukraine claimed soverignty and was given it. Taiwan, on the other hand, was founded by an opposition party who engaged in a civil war, and there was no formal ceasefire, and is still considered a part of China. I wish John would have specified these points because I'm sure it will lead to a lot of confusion in future if the US and China ever fight over Taiwan; it is NOT a sovereign state, so therefore it doesn't have the same right to sovereignty as Ukraine did.

John: china is becoming more and more powerful, other countries should unite with US to contain it... Question: what's the logic behind it? I mean US is powerful, why no other countries containing it?
What John is doing is terrorizing American allies to enforce them to obey as always. Then he's threatening any potential enemies or rising regional powers. But ruling by fear and intimidation will fail one day when their claws are not as sharp as they was
@@murphymurph8282 where do you get the sense that he's terrorizing allies? Threatening? I assume you believe in state sovereignty. Are you saying those who ally with us do so under duress? In a way, the strategy argument makes sense. Who wouldn't want to align themselves with great powers, even if they're located on the other side of the globe? At the same time, how do you resolve the military issue of countries, because I assume that's what you're referring to be "terrorizing".

My observation is that we Asians are outnumbered in this debate hosted by a very close alliance of US. Professor John is reaching his decision with a very clear American way of marshalling the world in the Western way. Sadly this debate has not been fair to the Asian side without accepting the repetitive advice that Kishor asking the West to look at the situation from the Asian Point of View. Nobody wants a war even if they think a friendly Giant has grown in their neighbourhood. The American has been hostile to show the military might in a foreign region Which IT has Not Understood fully.
What's wrong with creating alliances? How do you resolve the issue of military conflict? Why even have strategic alliances if there was no physical conflict? Even if everyone wants love, peace, and prosperity for all, we can't erase history, culture, religion. Do you believe Taiwan wants to side with the US or China? Perhaps they want to be independent, but China around, do you think that's possible? What about Ukraine? John has made it clear that Ukraine SHOULD have sided with Russia. That's clearly not a pro-US side. In fact, he states that the West bears the responsibility for the Ukrainian conflict.
@@StrongbyLee The US will never look at Asian states as equal players, even on their closest Asia ally: Japan. Asia needs unity, we haven't gone to any major war instigated locally. We should maintain that and focus on prosperity and economic growth
Agree. I found John M's pov very tiring. He's american, so it is in his interests to 'contain' china. but that's not in ours at all, as asians in this region.
Initially, when Tom refer China as 'communist regime' or 'communist China', that is already reflect his prejudice and insulting thoughts towards China. China is not governed by a 'regime', but a big group of intelligent administrators. Do not insult superpower, as what Kishore said. Then, his tone is more 'proper'.
The only "proper" tone to deal with thuggish communists is with contempt. That this is true can be demonstrated by what Taiwan is versus what the CCP is: a successful, modern nation that isn't run by power-hungry thugs who threaten people's families if they don't get their way.

I think Kishore has been forced to excel himself. Containment, containment , containment. I have never before heard it stated so explicitely by Meirsheimer. So China must accept the USA as funnily "a regional hegemon" in "the world" and not rise to challenge the USA. China must know its place and be like Japan and S Korea subservient to the USA forever? Has Meirsheimer lost his mind?
I don't think that Meirsheimer is saying that American containment of China is the ideal situation. I think he's arguing from a realist's perspective that says whether it's the right thing to do or not, it's what the U.S. is going to try to do.
I think the argument would have some merit if the PRC wasn't run by the most thuggish dictatorship that blends the worst of radical Left and Right into its politics: the opposition to religious faith and the international imperialistic ambitions of the Communist Left, and the ethnically rooted ultranationalism under a dictator for life of the Fascist Right. I don't oppose China rising, per se: I oppose the influence of what can only be described as the evil Chinese Communist Party from gaining a greater foothold in international politics.
Alan Friesen, that’s exactly it. Hugh White of Australia says it’s not going to work and that the US will eventually withdraw from Asia. I tend to agree with Hugh because the US will not be able to build a containment coalition. The US tried already with TPP and led its partners down the primrose path for a decade only to withdraw at the last minute. So in Vietnam for example, the conservative pro China camp has gained power over the liberal pro America side.
@@richiesd1 Time changes perceptions: the perception in the Obama era was that the USA had gone a bit soft despite its rhetoric. Trump has altered that perspective, although he also did some damage with allies. Essentially, all that Australia needs is time to develop a nuclear deterrent. We have heaps of Uranium, we have good physicists. As long as the US remains firm until we can do so, we could be more self reliant, in defence terms, if it withdraws from the region. That would make it far harder for the CCP to exert military force in our direction, and strengthen our diplomacy.
Philip Crouch, if you read Hugh White, you will see that he’s advocating a go-it-alone way for Australia. That would mean more military spending at great cost. I don’t think nuclear weapons, but a stronger defense for sure. The USA will withdraw so it would be a mistake to do the bidding of America’s geopolitical ambitions. Australia needs to find a way that is neither pro USA or China. That’s actually safer for Australia because Australia is geographically in Asia. Very Insightful and stimulating discussion. For most of the points discussed I will agree with Kishore "live and let others live". We have to understand Chinese civilization to understand contemporary China and its peaceful rise. Summing up I would just say 250 years old civilizations is trying stopping the way of 5000 years old civilization. China is more mature and old player. US is new player in the club. It's natural for China to rise and it's choice for US whether try to stop their peaceful rise or cooperate with them and accept the new power without getting into conflicts. The rational approach would be to accept China as a rising power. China believes in win-win while US influenced through its short history believes in zero-sum or winner takes all. Other countries have to make sure they are on the right side of the history while embracing peaceful rise of China.
US is not a new player, we have the oldest stable government. Stable since 1789, much older than Russian Federation, EU, Japanese government or CCP. Our constitution was contemporary with the Holy Roman Empire and French Revolution, predates Bolshevik Revolution by 140 years. We are old, not young.

I agree with you, the US almost bankrupted if it wasn't for China helping the US during the 2008 financial crisis. The American's never mention any about that.
It's not as simple as that I'm afraid. The extent of US debt is a reflection of its enormous power, economically, politically, militarily and technologically. You know creditors have a choice over who they wish to lend to.
Will James obviously, but do you think the productivity of US workers resulted in the high standard of living? There is no way that is the case. We enjoy the high standard of living is based on the dollar being a reserve currency everyone on the earth have to use for trade, that enables us to print money as we wish without worrying the consequences. When we import from China and enjoy that half trillion deficits we simply print the paper money and get the goods.
@@jdc3636 If productivity is defined as value created per person per hour, then the US is the more productive than China. This is because the best segments of global value chains exist in the US. The reasons for the trade war becomes much more clear from this perspective.
Yep. The introduction was a horrendously biased view of world history. The US did not defeat Imperial Germany. It was a coalition of Allied states, of which France, Britain and Russia did the lion's share of the fighting. The US did not even enter the war until 1917; when the war started in 1914. The US did not defeat Nazi Germany alone. Something like 70% of the German losses were suffered against the Soviet Union. The US did not defeat Imperial Japan alone. Most of the Japanese army was locked in China. The US moreover did not defeat the Soviet Union alone. If you look at the economic downturn that resulted in the collapse of the Soviet Empire, the key player was not America or Reagan. It was West Germany and imports from the European market. The US in fact has a very bad habit of thinking it "wins" or "defeats" other powers on its own; mostly because the government pushes this idea of American exceptionalism to try and secure more domestic votes. Unfortunately, this also tends to result in the US government believing their own lies - hence the string of misadventures in the past two decades where the US apparently can't beat goat herders in the mountains.

Clearly, Prof. Mearsheimer doesn't understand China and the Chinese, moreover the history of Aisa, but he does understand the US mentality. Prof. Mahbubani is trying to give the solution that we can avoid tragedy, but they just don't believe that we could have a solution.
Mearsheimer is too influenced by the Nixon/Kissinger era of foreign policy. Not everyone country operates in the same incentive system as the westerners. What happens when the counterparty doesnt care about « dominance »? There is no need for containment in that world. Mearsheimer is a bitter old man in a wrong era.
Prof. Mearsheimer gets the US part right in their approach but he then applies that to everyone else which is a mistake but at the same time history has shown what most great powers do. I don't think the US will allow China to rise peacefully, it will do what's it already doing by trying to support color revolutions, student led protests etc... that are funded by ngo's like the NED, The National Endowment for Democracy which funds these groups, look at what happened in Myanmar, Hong Kong, Thailand what goes on in any country that's part of the belt and road initiative should be watched closely because the US doesn't want it happening. The Pakistani President just recently said the US tried to pay off Pakistani politicians to try an oust him, remember he wouldn't condemn Russia or sanction them and instead made a gas deal. He says he's got evidence so we'll see.

You're completely wrong on Mearsheimer. If kishore doesn't give australians the chills, I don't know what would. A person like Kishore takes a lot of delight in making the australians quake in their boots.
He is blunt, he doesnt sugar coat. Australia has been hyping up "China threat" and the recent behaviours by Australian administration are a great concern to Chinese. 1. Solomon Islands hype up. 2. Nuclear Sub deal with US, which has been rebuked by Keating, is not a defence deal. 3. Various fearmongering Chinese PLA army videos played on media. 4. Lack of diplomatic talks. So his blunt response that Australia needs to rethink their diplomatic strategy is a perfect response to the question posed by the interviewer who asked him why is China doing trade ban with Australia.
@@Vlog-hu8gb I disagree he is a CCP troll. Kishore is a realist and an optimist. Realist because he sees China's growth potential to become an economic super power, he also sees India's growth potential. Mearsheimer says China will try to be a regional hegemony, which I think is not easy, because of the very fact that China is near other great power like Russia which it is heavily dependent, and there's India which also has great potential. Additionally, he sees as I see, that China doesnt want conflict. China has another 30-50% of development to do. Entering into a military conflict will stall the international trade, look at Ukrainian conflict. China wants peace, peace promotes trade, and right now China is the world factory, its also building BRI trade routes to facilitate trade. Optimist, knowing the above two points, he is hoping that China would be able to rise peacefully, but the real question is Would US hegemony die peacefully? Like Mearsheimer says US is hell bent on containing China. Right now US is trying to wreck Russia, which is China's "no limit" partner. US is also arming Taiwan, preparing Aus-China conflict, India-China conflict. I would think China's peaceful rise is not possible, because US wouldnt allow it, but Kishore is an optimist and he believes that Chinese administration is capable of tactfully managing US aggressive foreign policy. Footnote: China brokered a peace deal of a decade long conflict between Saudi and Iran. Reports are Russia is close to brokering Syria-Turkey peace deal. Which would essentially mean stability on Northern Middle East.

It is good to watch this debate again in October 2020, five months after it was first put onto UA-cam. Facts tell that China and some of its neighbours, who are not communists, have done well in combating and controlling Covid-19, whereas the USA, much of South America and Europe have suffered and continue to suffer badly due to the Coronavirus. This reflects governance and leadership. In my opinion, Western politicians in general are good talkers but not good doers. They don't serve their people. They serve themselves. They have the "me first" attitude. This is totally opposite to many politicians in the East who have a different type of upbringing in a different culture and tradition. Eastern politicians are generally more humble and reserved, they work more than they talk, and they serve their people. It is also to do with the citizens in the East who are patriotic and obey the government in a pandemic. They sacrifice the so-called "human rights", "democracy" and "freedom" that they West always champion about. The UK is now in a mess going back to square one after wasting so many months of indecisive and inconsistent approach in tackling the Coronavirus. People want freedom; yes they can spread the virus. People want democracy, yes, they can debate on the subject with opposing views. People want human rights, yes, they can break the newly imposed laws. The situation in the USA is actually worse where many people believe Donald Trump's words that the virus is actually a hoax. In March when the Coronavirus got worse in the USA, people queued up round the block to buy guns to protect themselves. What sort of society is it? A warmongering country such as the USA wants chaos in the world so that it can sell them arms, such as to country like Saudi Arabia, who is alleged to have a poor human rights record, but does the USA care? They only see the $ sign and Saudi Arabia is not seen as a threat. Double standards abound in daily life and yet the West have the cheek to lecture other countries why they are not like them. It would have been a disaster if China were like the USA because China would have been a very aggressive country starting many physical wars already just like the USA is constantly doing around the world.
Similar cases on the surface but different in reality. Taiwan is not a recognized country in the international political system, not even by the US. China considers Taiwan as an indivisible part of the country, never recognized taiwan. In fact Taiwan started as place where the losing side of the civil war decided to exile.
John, tell your compatriots first to try to combat the Covid 19 before boasting about how great the US is. Doing is louder than talking. You look very like Trump in talking but unlike him in many things. The Australian government should appoint Kishore to be its consultant on internation affairs.
Why would we appoint such a man? The most charitable description of his position is that it might make sense for Singapore to adopt such a perspective, because it is a) essentially a city state, b) reliant on a highly restricted set of service industries like financial services etc. to function, c) extremely reliant on shipping to supply its population with essentials, in relatively close proximity to China, in a strategic maritime chokepoint that the CCP is interested in, d) mostly ethnically Chinese, and therefore more likely to be susceptible to United Front soft power tactics. To be honest, I suspect Singaporean governments will try to blow smoke up the arses of the CCP officials with wily diplomacy whilst pursuing their own national interest without the glare of public attention. Australia is self-reliant in all of the essentials of life: we have surpluses of food, we supply enormous volumes of raw materials to the rest of the world, we can supply our own high quality iron etc. We are less susceptible to United Front infiltration, because most Australians are not of Chinese origin and not susceptible to ethic Chinese nationalism, we are much further away etc. The CCP could gravely harm our economy in the short to medium term, but with the re-arrangement of supply chains and some adjustment to our unusually high standard of living, it can't seriously threaten Australia except in a military sense. And, I have enough faith in the US strategic umbrella and our ability to resource our Navy to ensure that continent wide blockade or land invasion is effectively impossible.

Wonderful program! Many thanks to the organizer, and especially to the two guests, who always stick with the truth. Can I add a point here? Lots of Asian countries, including many regions of China, had an experience of falling victim to colonization. Therefore, China understands the painful and humiliating experience of a country being ruled by others. It is actually less likely for China to do the same thing as previous world powers did in the 19th century. As you can see, the Chinese policy of one belt one road also takes a more peaceful approach and try to provide contribution in developing the global economic system rather than becoming a threat to others. Also historically, when China had a chance to colonize many Asian countries in the 14th century (Song Dynasty), China didn't, proving that China has a different view on its power from certain other countries. Would it be possible that these facts are implicitly understood by all asian countries through the "Asian glasses" but not believed by US or non-Asian countries?

Kishore put this very succinctly - back when China was the absolute dominating force in the world, it had no motivation to control/colonize other regions the way the western nations did. It is simply not the dominating thought in the Chinese mindset to control others unless it feels threatened and do so out of self defense. John on the other hand, "China would be crazy to not dominate Asia the way U.S. has dominated the western hemisphere..." case in point. Please don't project your bias/inclinations onto the eastern mind.
John doesn't really understand the Asian mentality, the way of doing things that's so very different from the West.
Ķ
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yes, it is surprised to hear that from John, he still have the mindset that China want to conquer or dominate the world like the West. and the example of he mentioned US won over Germany, Nazi, Japan, Soviet Union, all those 4 power is crazy for power. But China isnt going that way, China is totally different kind of competitor that US has never met.
The question is not if China will rise peacefully, the question is if US will go down peacefully.

Meh, kind of sounds like India'sversion of Neville Chamberlain
John Wayne
I think Kishore has theoretical brilliance in rationalizing & producing solutions to potential conflicts. But, I believe, he is so dazzled by China's exponential rise , that he has overlooked or has not understood CCP'S strategic aims to conquer & dominate the world without firing a shot
.
As we all know by now, the
CCP'S has repeatedly used a devious means to achieve its strategic objective: viz. debt- trap for financial colonisation of weak nations in Africa, Asia, Latin Anerica, etc.
What Kishore also seems to ignore is China is regularly using its financial & military firepower to bully etc and dictate terms to weaker nations for trade & infrastructure deals ....these nations, being dependent on China's domination of the global supply chain, often end up surrendering their strategic land or their key infrastructure
assets.

America put all of its cards into conventional weapons of war EVEN AFTER THEY INVENTED the device that made conventional war impossible between any nation that has it.

in this case ,nobody win! But I really want to know how Australia feels when he knows that his American brother exports beef to China and makes a lot of money.
A lot of Australians have taken note and realize the U.S. has back stabbed us. So we are now little more sceptical of america and no longer trust like we use to. But we still trust china even less. Having that said, our approval of both superpowers has gone down over the years but we are way more distrusting of china than we are with the united states.
@Black Knight I wasn't asserting that this incident was abnormal nor unexpected when it comes to free trade and the viewpoints weren't in just "my eyes," the general sentiments in respects to China and Australia were recorded statistically, at least to gauge general sentiments.
"Oh it's free trade, that's what we should expect."
We can't do anything against America but at least we should be realistic about international affairs at least for the sake of making decisions as a democracy to garner choices that would serve us, not for other countries.
And a lot of people hate America for good reasons. This didn't just occur out of nowhere...

Love this program. Really objective, not so extreme. Good discussion.
@@ruoyuli4091 if it's an existential threat when Taiwan is independent, what's stopping them from doing it now?
@@StrongbyLee US wouldn't let that happen, because it is much more valuable for Taiwan to continue to remain as a conflict or bargaining chip. Do you know Sun Tsz's Art of War about defeating enemy without fighting? Look at how Ukraine served as US's pawn in weakening Russia, without US committing much into the war themselves?

There is no limit to printing money and passing on inflation to other developing countries, as the us has done before.

Will James obviously, but do you think the productivity of US workers resulted in the high standard of living? There is no way that is the case. We enjoy the high standard of living is based on the dollar being a reserve currency everyone on the earth have to use for trade, that enables us to print money as we wish without worrying the consequences.
I am just being candid here the Western always look at winner take all...Asian doesn't look at it this way there is always a path to co-existence which can benefits both....that is being Civilize. That is what former Malaysian PM Mahathir said "We have been China neighbor for thousands of year yet China have never Colonised or Conquered us...but when the Western came via Portuguese, Conquered us withina few yrs" follow by....Dutch, British, French....within a few years there Conquered & Colonised everyone in Asia wow what a revaluation!!!!!

Why Australia keeps provoking China? If we look back at all the recent issues between Australia anfmd China, it's always Australia that start picking a fight.
Australia is America‘s bitch.
Internet freedom:Some people of Australia provoked by social media.
Multi-party system : US can support Australia's Pro-US party against China
Freedom of the press : Australian media are supported by American capital, and of course they are controlled by American capital.
At the same time, think about the U.S. military base in Australia. The United States tells Australians that China is a villain through newspapers, television and social media. People are the foundation of politics. As a result:
Politically, Australia is a puppy of the United States. The United States asked Australia to do sth, Australia has little ability to oppose it , even if it is not in Australia's interest.
Didn’t Napoleon allegedly compare China to a sleeping giant/lion that shouldn’t be woken? Now that it’s awake. At least don’t poke it.
Listening to this old discussion, it so real that Meisheimer epitomizes the war mongering USA who
1. Cannot bear to lose its imperialist and hegemonic status when he insist that USA will do anything to contain and destruct China based on fear, jealousy, lies and anger
2. How USA is the king and colonial master of Australia when Australia really did forego its prosperity for security (remember how he threatened, humiliated and cowed Australia in his talk in Australia)when Australians were thwarted from exporting to China and foolishly agreed to an Auskus deal where its prosperity is taken away by US and UK for some outdated subs.
So much for a lap dog Scumo to boot when USA sells to China what Australia abstained from.
Americans had the pleasure of choosing who to run American policies every 4 years which actually are the same regardless of GOP or Demos in charge. They continue to decline and go into poverty, enjoy decaying infrastructures and being ruled by plutocrats.
My respect to Kishore..He is the present and future representation of WORLD PEACE as Meisheimer is the Past as a disrespectful warhog and bully.
Meisheimer is realistic
You're completely wrong on Mearsheimer. He illustrates, as a realist international relations thinker, what in his view Great Powers have done in the past, continue to do in the present and will do in the future. He considers that all the wars the US has fought, or sponsored in the past 30 years have been bad ideas from a policy standpoint; he does not get into morality, that's not what he's talking about. He's a liberal democrat but believes that the US fighting wars to spread liberal doctrine has been a foolhardy foreign policy strategy, that is ideological, not realist. With all due respect, you cannot be at all familiar with him to consider him to be a "war monger".

One more note, you do not represent the majority of the people nor the world, to think is in itself arrogant.
HK repression are no more by their own action. China did not partake on it.
Since we come to the topic of Uyghur
Because of the real fear and past attacks where many hundreds were killed including both Chinese and Uyghur, China now has a pre-emptive policy rotating part of the population through vocational training centres.
Many Uighurs have left China porous western border for military training and partake in jihads or joined various terrorist groups such as ETLO, ETIM, TIP, etc, for many decades. These battle hardened terrorists returning may strengthen the terrorist groups and poison an entire generation in their society. Of 18,000 Uighurs in Syria, 5000 are fighters, and some were even held in US Guantanamo camp.
And those groups are deadly and serious, causing multiple terrorist attacks. Just listen to their chilling words:
"If you do not wage jihad, you will never be able to get rid of the oppression of the infidels which makes you abandon the religion and which makes slaves of you. Thus, you will not be able to be rescued from the oppression of this world and the torments of the hereafter, or find eternal happiness until you return to the religion of Allah. . ." - Abdul Haq (Memetiming Memeti), a commander in the Uyghur separatist movement Turkistan Islamic Party (East Turkestan Islamic Movement)

"We have to conquer our own country and purify it of all infidels. Then, we should conquer the infidels' countries and spread Islam. The infidels who are usurping our countries have announced war against Islam and Muslims, forcing Muslims to abandon Islam and change their beliefs." - Abdullah Mansour, current leader of the Uyghur separatist movement Turkistan Islamic Party (East Turkestan Islamic Movement), from "The Duty of Faith and Support," Voice of Islam/al-Fajr Media Center.

West and Allies. The West and allies has really messed up the Middle East - nurturing Al Qaeda, ISIS, and perpetuating the endless wars, cyclical violence and rise of radical Islam. After trillions of USD later, there is still a lust for jihads, and that cancer has spread into China.
China Policy and Actions. In crackdown, China has sealed the border tightly, enhanced surveillance, and apprehended 13,000 terrorist suspects.
And the vocational training is to wean them from other counter productive activities and make more economically more productive. Plus, proverty is also one of the main cause of terrorism and this is why China trying to quicken the progress of develop at that area.

China has some very clear ideas of what is and is not acceptable in this topic. Most people are surprised to find out that registered protests are perfectly fine and happen all the time. There are roughly 500+ protest every single day in China for major and minor issues (there was a protest in a compound I lived in because they were increases the cost of utilities).
The Chinese government is also always doing market research and asks for feedback. As far as I can tell it is a “key performance index” based on who is giving feedback, so they love getting feedback from people to improve themselves
Do they allow criticism? Yes, obviously. They have to, else they (official positions) would be overthrown. But more importantly, they need criticism from THE CITIZENS to self-correct themselves constantly. And they would welcome it even more if the criticism comes with a viable solution they can work on. But once again, if the intent of the criticism is to create social unrest, incite a rebellion/seperation of the state, or using this tool for self-interest with malicious intent towards the collective interest of the State and/or the citizens of the PRC, why they should not jail you up and put you away?
From my knowledge, all the governments in the world have some form of laws that limits criticism against themselves. It is naive to think that you can go about criticizing without limits.

Kishore is a paid CCP troll, I am sure there are similar people in Australia

Confronting China aggressively under the security umbrella of US, is only destructive. That is because US had stated in their national security reports that China is US no 1 security threat. Even if China is not assertive, US would have to do China in. That means Asia would be in danger because the battleground is in this region. Our whole economy and whole lifestyle will de devastated.

So well said !!! I agree with you 100%.
How’s the Shanghai lockdown going? And how are the Uyghurs and Tibetans doing? Loving life in perfect China?
May 2021 all of Shanghai is locked down, residents bolted into their apartments yelling and banging on pans wishing for food.
@@listsforthecurious I like you to say sth. about the case of Timor Leste connecting to Indonesia, also dragging Thailand to participate in the robbery game of petro resources in its terroritorial area. Talk about the US-Australian false flag leading to a waging pf war under the fake peace-keeping force of the UN. The unusaual closeness of the two countries in operatimg their international policies in the ASEAN and SCS regions. It 's not surprising that Indonesia applies an indifference attitude toward your country. In that country, they could not wipe away from their memory what you did to them in rhe Timor case. Australia and the US together act like a robbery gangster of the world. China readily utilizes trade with your country as an economic weapon not unlike the US. Let the aussies eat up all the beef that has been banned from importing to that giant country. Go to find some other market to sell the banned barley at a very low price. Don't export it to Thailand. We never want it and have rice be our favorite staple. Ok, economically decouple yourself from China. Let see what will happen to you soon. Prove in practice that you do not need rely on it. You can be economically independent from it. Let you prove it. That giant economy does not need to rely on you either. @@suratpongpipatpanich5627 No doubt Philip Crouch would characterise Australia's intervention in East Timor as glorious liberation. No doubt the East Timorese enjoyed their new found freedom by being spied on by ASIO to be screwed in negotiations with Australia for their resources. Thank you virtuous, honest, and freedom loving Anglosphere.
@@noninsignia Timor Leste was formerly East Timor. All the turbulance started off with a mishandling and suppression of the Indonesian government on native people over there. The US together with its allies saw an opportunity to intervene since they knew before there was a petro reserve in the vicinity of Timor island not far away from Australia, by sattellite advancement of the US without field exploration. A whole lot of conspiracy and false flags had ensued throughout many years with Indonesia falling into the trap being set up by the US alliance. Eventually, it succeeded like the Iraqi case much in the sense that all were just cross-country robbing of petro resources as the real motivation. Austrlia and the US rarely give a damn to people liberation no matter be the case of Hong Kong protest or Taiwanese movement to independence. Please believe me.
@@listsforthecurious Philip, yes, no one will argue with you that Australia is self reliant. But your principle market is China and there is nobody that can take up the slack. Don't delude yourself. You don't have to worry about defence. China is not interested in invading and having to oversee an unfriendly population. The name of the game is to improve standard of living and what is sourced from Australia as you know can be sourced from elsewhere by China. China will continue to prosper but Australia's economy will tank. Is a tie up with the US really worth it? Just for Hollywood movies? I agree. But I don't think china will get it. Not without a war. You have to remember China GDP is 12.5 trillion annually. And have 1.4 billion people. The US have 19 trillion GDP and only 330 million people. The US is not only 6 trillion annually richer than China. But also have a larger GDP per capita. The anglos are inclined to choose war where no one wins and danger to existence oh life on earth
At least the Anglosphere defends the liberty of the world: something that folk whose ancestors were oppressed by communist dictatorships in Central Europe should be very thankful for!
It's weird you think the angles liberated eastern Europe you must be watching the BBC the Anglos propaganda instead of reading history to which they are historically colonists over the world
@@MrMSalexanderMK The pressure of the USA on the Soviet Empire brought it down. They certainly embody the Anglo-Saxon valuing of the individual person and his liberty. And to be frank: I'd prefer to be part of a people that took good, civilised values around the world, and created places like Australia for ourselves and others to enjoy, than the peoples caught up in the intrigues of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Russian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire, then between the pro-liberty West and the Russian core of the Soviet Empire. Colonialism has never been a swearword in my vocabulary. :)
@@listsforthecurious Good civilised values like murdering indigenous people and taking their land. Such an exceptional example for everyone to follow.
Yeah, my worry is the Anglosphere will flip the table and kill everyone once their loss of power is undeniable and it's apparent restoration to hegemony is impossible. They are quick to violence when things go their way (just look at why the British initiated the Opium Wars). The only problem is this time, the only dependable and irresistable part of their military is the nuclear arsenal, in which case a lot of humanity will die.
Respect Kishore... just use facts, don't need to use rhetoric and terms like "... regime..." and ".. virus made in..." terms that this CIS moderate is trying to paint a negative narrative or it is just a Fruedian slip of the bias in his mind.

The western countries don't understand it because they base their arguments on their own experiences

Korea, Mongolia and Vietnam have the unpleasant experience of being colonized by China.
china will collapse if something happen to xi, china is not ready for that now and never will be. because xi thinks he is going to stay alive forever lol.
@@JBfan88 exactly. Within "China" this kept happening too. Many times there were mass migrations to get away from invading colonizers. The entire concept of being Chinese is very unclear because there were so many different ethnic groups conquering each other all the time. The "humiliation" suffered at the hands of western countries pale in comparison to the ones from the mongolians, Manchurians, and the Japanese.
To me, Kishore is the idealist and Mearsheimer is the realist, and finding the ground in between is perhaps the only way conflict between the US and China might be avoided. That being said, if history is anything to go by, realism is the more reliable approach to understanding how events might actually unfold compared to idealism's approach to understanding how one would like events to unfold! Peace and harmony is what everyone wants even as world powers increase their military capabilities and presence in the full knowledge of that most frustrating of human paradoxes put a classical Western way: 'Sic vis pacem para bellum' - if you want peace, prepare for war, or put a traditional Asian way: 'Attack is the secret of defense; defense is the planning of an attack' - Sun Tzu.
